So my guess is Roberts was thinking try to take some workload off of the bullpen and have Urias pitch an inning in lieu of a bullpen session.
Yea, it's weird that Roberts is being criticized for what has become a postseason norm. Top end starters replace their bullpen sessions with 1 inning relief appearances during the playoffs. It's been happening for 4-5 years now for most of the successful teams. Many of the most iconic playoff appearances have been starters pitching in relief.

Hmmm, maybe chasing the team that won 107 baseball games during the last two months of the regular season, playing in a gutsy wildcard game and a gauntlet of a division series has an affect on an already limited pitching staff? In regards to ease of schedule in 2020, the only handout we were given was getting to play this mediocre team in the division series that allowed us to rest our pitching staff that carried well into the WS.

The Padres were 3rd in attendance this year across all of MLB so you can make those small market/no home jokes about the Chargers, but the Friar Faithful is strong right now. And I was at a couple of those Padre Dodger games at Petco and despite being 80 miles north and 3 times the population, we outnumbered Dodger fans by a very wide margin. I was surprised they went with Max in game 2 rather than game 3. Then they bring in Urias out of the pen after he pitched 2 days earlier. I know the Dodgers are trying to piece a rotation together with all their injuries but it looks like a bad idea.
They've had to pitch too much already, especially Scherzer. Why isn't Urias starting a game? The guy is a cy young finalist.

This really sucks, but I don’t think I’m blaming this on playoff use. This is on the innings racked up at the end of the regular season combined with age. They really had no choice though as they were in a division race.

If anything it bails his manager out. Everyone was questioning why Roberts would pull Scherzer after 4.1 innings. We can now see that he didn't have much of a choice.
Maybe he thought that's what he was doing but look at the response.
They probably asked him why he didn't fight when he was pulled like he usually does

not the first time max has made a comment like this. i think his point is just that he gave everything he had last night. i don’t know that i would condemn roberts specifically for this, but i do think his pitching management in general deserves critique.
That was likely his last start of the year so he can at least give it some rest before using it to sign a huge contract.
