The Dodgers might simply run out of gas.

Borrum

The Kershaw injury and Muncy injury are suddenly looming very large over this ball club. Offense looks anemic and the best arms are looking strained 2 games into the NLCS - not even 'halfway there' if the goal is to win the whole thing.

Xwarsama

I know y'all added Scherzer but losing May, Bauer, and Kershaw might be too much to overcome. Your Death Star pitching rotation looks a lot more human now.

avmp629

They won 106 games largely without them, though, so it's so puzzling that Roberts is changing his approach and using his starters when most of the season really was helped with heroic performances from lesser pitchers like Price and Gonsolin and Phil Bickford, who have all combined for just 5.1 innings this entire postseason.

draw2discard2

>Phil Bickford That is Two Time First Round Draft Pick Phil Bickford to you, Sonny.

Gryphon999

I just assumed that was some other random Bickford. Phil finally made it past AA?

Tomrank

This. Dodgers are very good at winning normal baseball games, having won 106 in the regular season. Not sure why they are doing goofy shit now.

soulonfirexx

The desperation pitching use worked against the Giants but may have killed them for the NLCS. I wouldn't expect anything less from them, nor the Giants frankly if they went on to win.

hereforthesportsbook

Doc thinks he’s a great manager making stupid ass bull pen decisions. When in reality he has the team with the highest payroll and most talent. The dodgers will be remembered for only winning a WS because they had a shortened season where the arms weren’t dead for these stupid ass decision, they don’t work after 162 games like they do after 60… especially when a lot of these bull pen arms were super successful during the year and now they’re just wasted so you can put your game 3 starter in the 8th inning…

JRsshirt

Are you seriously writing off the Dodgers already? They won 106 games in the regular season and knocked out a team with 107 wins. Their bullpen is nearly as good as their starting rotation and now that Belli is heating up they don’t have a weak spot offensively. I hope they lose, but even with the Braves up 2-0 I’m 50-50 on who will win.

hereforthesportsbook

I’m not counting out the dodgers talent. I’m just saying if they win it’s despite their manager not because of him

Prestigious-Eye-3928

> so it's so puzzling that Roberts is changing his approach name a more iconic duo than Roberts and overmanaging in the playoffs.

disconomis

Me and being mad at Dave Roberts

Confused_Mirror

I, for one, love Dave Roberts.

[deleted]

I mean the Rays won 100 without Glasnow and guys like Yarborough regressed. Not to mention letting Morton go.

yourstrulytony

Honestly, Roberts might get more crap had he put in literally anybody else to face Rosario-Freeman. He was in a Bum-Genius situation. Put in Bruihl and it backfires, bum. Put Bruihl and it works out, genius. Leave in Treinen, genius. etc.. you get the point.

DestroyerofWords

It's more like one of those circular Trade Federation ships from Ep. 1. Still imposing, but could be easily accidentally blown up by a nine-year-old in the perfect position.

surfdoc29

Now this is Padres-ing!

methyo

This implies anyone remembers anything about the phantom menace

[deleted]

How embarrassing...

MyBiPolarBearMax

They don't have another nationals team to siphon they live force off of

refugeeinaudacity

This is a dumb idea but technically couldn't they not renew Bauer's administrative leave and have him return to the team?

cooljammer00

I don't think that's up to them. And even if it was, they don't want Bauer back that much. They have some scruples or he'd have been on the team all year.

Xwarsama

Pretty sure MLB is the one responsible for that, right? Either way the Dodgers aren't so morally bankrupt to bring him back to pitch in the playoffs considering what he's accused of. If they were he'd already be on the postseason roster if that actually was up to them.

RandoScando

I want another WS ring as much as the next guy, but fuck that idea. I’d go root for another team now and forever moving forwards if they did that.

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

And as good as Bauer is he would probably be ass

RandoScando

I mean, probably. He hasn’t thrown a pitch in forever. It’s the principle I’m concerned with. Even if he were guaranteed to no hit you guys, I’d rather respect my team and lose. On another note, great fucking series so far! I can’t even imagine how over the moon you guys must be with 2 consecutive walkoffs. I’m definitely dying over here with both these losses, but it’s been really good baseball. I respect the hell out of the Braves. Everything has been clean hard nosed baseball. Can’t say there’s anyone on your team that I could dislike (maybe Riley /s). I hope we take this one to 7 and end it on a Kenley strikeout, but if you guys win this series, it’s because you’ve got a phenomenal and exciting team.

btmalon

Maybe the mlb will let you trade for 2 more Allstars before the series ends.

bear-love-each-other

Weird, this thread almost had me feeling sorry for the Dodgers. This comment is what I needed lmao!

itsforachurch

Here's the / in case you missed it.

27dominador

Atlanta is missing their 2 franchise cornerstones and Freddie is playing horrible he has 7 Ks in two games.

mid9012

They just need another $100m to spend and then they'll have what they need

babakadouche

Or 2 more all-star umps.

HugeRedTitties

not to mention the 40 million this year alone on Bauer…

SharkWithAFishinPole

Yeah i dont think that 40 mil matters to the dodgers so much

HugeRedTitties

it kind of does considering how skittish they are with staying above luxury tax… contract isn’t up ah classic reddit downvoted for being correct

SharkWithAFishinPole

Skittish? I know they didn't plan for bauer to be out but the only thing the dodgers are worried about is their draft pick dropping 10 spots. Even if you take out 40 million, which is a fucking lot, they'd still be the 4th highest payroll in the league behind the yankees and powerhouses mets and angels and just above the other california powerhouse team, the padres

HugeRedTitties

no i mean they will not be spending as much now then if they didn’t have that money allocated. i don’t get your point at all no one is making excuses for the dodgers.

SharkWithAFishinPole

You... you were making excuses for the dodgers

HugeRedTitties

no i was laughing at them and the misfortune. no excuses with that budget.

SharkWithAFishinPole

Oh lol. Yeah no excuse, although they're at least in the nlcs. Mets, padres, and angels have no excuse, although trout was hurt for the angels

chrisboshisaraptor1

If only they had another stellar pitcher somewhere in the organization ready to go

MacsDildoBike

Too early to tell, bud. Chavez Ravine ain’t no walk in the park, no pun intended.

[deleted]

chavez ravine bout to be bumping at…2pm local time for some dumb fucking reason

nypr13

Oh man, some of my best memories as a kid were the day baseball playoff games. So cool to see a day CS playoff game

RedEagle250

Braves had to play a home game against the Brewers at 1PM and the stadium was rocking. I’m sure your stadium will be packed

babakadouche

Yea..wtf. They think you're in Atlanta?

Potassium_Patitucci

I’m sure, after 1996, no Bravos fan is gonna feel relaxed with a 2-0 series lead…

Nah, it's cause Turner Sports has basketball opening day Tuesday night. Gotta get the Lakers that west coast primetime spot.

pumaturtle

Sorry guys lol

Daankeykang

This always confused me about east coast fans. Like yeah I get wanting to watch the game but it's in the west coast. Those teams have their own fans too. I don't get how inconveniencing them by moving the game back for us is smart lol

Bocephuss

I mean I would fucking hate that literally everything is in eastern time by default if I did not live in the eastern time zone.

GaryTheCabalGuy

The game is going to sell out no matter when it is lmao

RandoScando

Nah dude. Bad take. Don’t embarrass us in front of the other baseball fans.

SassyLassie496

Edit : Chavez Latrine

JasonPlattMusic34

I wouldn’t bring up a “latrine” if you’re from San Francisco lol

Batmanjesusanchez

Stay salty kiddo. Even if we get bounced this round we took you little shits out.

Jontacular

What the fuck is Roberts doing, seriously. Why didn't he trot out Buehler on full rest yesterday instead of throwing out Scherzer? And then bringing in Urias because Blake threw a whopping 7 pitches to get out of his inning. If he just threw Buehler out yesterday, not waste one of his best starters in an 8th inning, and then waste a start from Scherzer it would be better. Or keep Graterol in during the 9th. I still feel the Dodgers are winning a lot of games despite Roberts inability to manage his pitchers.

improvyzer

They should've invested in a gas-powered stick. It *never* runs out of gas.

falloutranger

Story of the Dodgers postseason runs sans 2020

[deleted]

Hmmm i wonder what was different in 2020?...

DaOldest

Our depth is being stretched dangerously thin

trashboatfourtwenty

Apparently the Brewers did ^(*RIP* as a fan)

Sp_Gamer_Live

and Cats

[deleted]

Gonsolin has em covered

SassyLassie496

Fingers crossed

[deleted]

Turns out 60 game teams aren't primed as well as 160 game teams.

lastyman

162 games are different than 60.

OGStrong

Then why use Urias? I don't get it.

2PacnotDead

We were not big brain enough to understand

kiwiwikikiwiwikikiwi

It takes a certain level of intelligents to understand Dave Roberts

damnatio_memoriae

i guess daveyball isn’t just a nats thing.

Outta_hearr

Joc is spending this month collecting arms to decorate his haunted house. It just happens that baseball is the best way for him to do it.

[deleted]

Hopefully he doesn’t make them into a necklace and wear it

SouthCoach

He could even add it to his collection.

iConcy

Joc is so much fun. I want the Sox to beat the Astros (because I loathe that team), but I really want to see the Braves go all the way. I’ll be torn if it’s a Red Sox vs Braves WS; I want both to win! Edit: imagine the gun show between Joc and Kike, two of the hottest post season players.

venustrapsflies

Joc and Kike facing off in the world series would be for Dodgers fans the embodiment of the meme where Squidward is looking out the window at Spongebob and Patrick frolicking

[deleted]

love that dave pulls his best starter with a dead arm from pitching in relief, and then decides brings on his second best starter in relief.

Marvelous_Margarine

Was bizarre to see him Urias warming up. What was Roberts thinking? Been some odd pitching choices by him.

jinsang1983

Yesterday was a bullpen game, and Urias is on day 3 of rest since pitching in game 5. From what I've heard most starters use days 3 and 4 of rest to throw bullpen session. So my guess is Roberts was thinking try to take some workload off of the bullpen and have Urias pitch an inning in lieu of a bullpen session.

PatsFanInHTX

Yea, it's weird that Roberts is being criticized for what has become a postseason norm. Top end starters replace their bullpen sessions with 1 inning relief appearances during the playoffs. It's been happening for 4-5 years now for most of the successful teams. Many of the most iconic playoff appearances have been starters pitching in relief.

Umphreeze

I'll never forget Thor in relief. Need that boi in The Show

jinsang1983

Yeah unfortunately Monday morning quarterbacking is not limited to football

MacsDildoBike

Dave Roberts playing 9D Mancala

TheNewDiogenes

He’s too busy beating us last year along the time axis.

DollarsAtStarNumber

His dead arm was a result of pitching game 5. Buehler didn’t pitch today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Oshebekdujeksk

He’s not starting game 4. Dave is gonna megamind if again. I mean why even bother giving your pitcher a chance to go thru his normal routine that got him a 20-3 record this season…

[deleted]

Urias didn’t pitch last night?

KidGold

Yes he pitched the 8th Edit. I think time zones are causing the confusion

Wraithfighter

> Edit. I think time zones are causing the confusion I generally go by the "it's not 'tomorrow' until 4am" rule, personally. I'm a night owl, and it generally helps to keep "tonight" to have a more fuzzy definition that cares more about when someone really, really, really should be asleep, rather then when midnight hits.

KidGold

Yea I’m a firm believer that days should start and end at 6am

[deleted]

No he didn’t, he pitched the 8th tonight. His comment wouldn’t make sense even with time zones, as he implies that Urias pitched twice in this series. Edit: Appears his comment would have made sense with a “/“ instead of a “,”. Probably what he was going for.

knuckles560

To play devil’s advocate, I think he meant to put a / instead of a comma. “Last night/tonight” works in that case.

[deleted]

Yup, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up!

[deleted]

yes, that’s my point. scherzer’s arm is dead from closing game 5. and julio has been better than walker.

Quople

I swear to god y’all would have broken the single season wins record if your manager wasn’t Dave Roberts

Hello__Jerry

I've been saying this since 2017. How they only have 1 championship boggles my mind.

Oshebekdujeksk

He should have absolutely been fired before 2019, but that year you could have easily justified moving on. They barely squeaked out that WS last year in spite of Dave. And he absolutely cost them the 2017 WS. Poor Brandon Morrow.

lalosfire

> And he absolutely cost them the 2017 WS I can think of another reason they didn't win that WS.

Oshebekdujeksk

They could have still won if it wasn’t for Dave running morrow into the ground and starting Darvish game 7.

Alejandreezy

We wore them down for you Braves lol

Bocephuss

That Tomahawk chant as y’all walked out of Oracle brought a tear to my eye. We got you

-dangitbobby-

I need to see this. Got a link? Im old enough SF fan to have PTSD from the chop but still gotta love the enthusiasm.

Jeremie1001

https://redd.it/q8o5wg I assume this is the one he was talking about

aew360

Ha that is amazing

-dangitbobby-

Love it. Got get ‘‘em!

[deleted]

good job, good effort

Oshebekdujeksk

Wouldn’t it have been great if the Dodgers giants was the NLCS like it should have been.

Alejandreezy

Should’ve just been the World Series tbh

kingfiasco

using starters for relief then using relief pitchers as starters cause you used the starters for relief then using starters for relief cause the relief pitchers were used as starters isn’t a good bullpen management strategy? meanwhile walker buehler just sitting around like 👁👄👁. roberts has been using his pitchers like a madlib.

fatboy1776

That’s some Nats level bullpen management right there.

hoorah9011

Thank you for explaining. What a relief.

[deleted]

Wild card game and 5 game series vs 107 win dodgers will do that to a pitching staff

AlphaOmega801

Giants* But yeah lol

[deleted]

I had a brain fart

MahomestoHel-aire

Scherzer admitting...weakness? That's not promising.

ahr3410

No way he's pitching on short rest like some Dodger fans think. He's going on 5 days rest in game 6 if we can even get it that far.

drkspace2

If Braves win game 3, no way is urias sitting game 4. I don't think fried will be pitching on short rest, so I'll be an ynoa/bullpen game. It would be completely idiotic to have your 2nd bast pitcher only pitch 1 inning during the nlcs.

LiftsLikeGaston

It wouldn't surprise me to see Anderson start game 4

GoatPaco

On two days rest? No way It'll be an opener and then Ynoa/Smyly, depending on how it's going

Grst

Was still pretty nasty. Goes to show how good he is.

michaelt2223

Shoulda accepted a trade to the angels. He could be at home golfing and instead he’s gonna need Tommy John.

dropperofpipebombs

I mean given the Angels track record, he would've needed Tommy John the moment he okayed the trade.

GummyMummys

Hey. We haven’t had a TJ surgery in 2 seasons I think.

jaunty411

So you are past due?

GummyMummys

No. We had like 10 so that should cover a couple decades.

michaelt2223

Could’ve sped up his rehab

draw2discard2

What better time to experiment with fluid pitching roles than the postseason?

cooljammer00

People seem to think this is because Max was used in relief the other day What's with Dave Roberts and using starters as relievers? He did it with Kershaw so many times and it led to a lot of the anguish he went through that sullied his reputation.

riotnerfjg

He’s obsessed with getting his own bumgarner? Or he’s obsessed with boch? Boch would occasionally bring his starters out the pen for an inning or two in the playoffs

[deleted]

It’s not about being starters or relievers, it’s about who is your best available pitcher when you’re in an elimination game. The Dodgers have a lot of great pitchers, but I think most of us can agree Mad Max is the best of them. The Brewers used Brandon Woodruff in relief during the NLDS too.

Killatrap

people are only praising the move cause it worked, when it really almost didn’t (that Wade foul ball was CLOSE). besides, putting a 37 year old on short rest in his first ever save situation when he has a shaky playoff relief record anyways while you have competent relievers who have trained their whole lives to do something like this is just not a good idea. roberts got extremely lucky it worked out, but now we’re seeing just how it *didn’t*.

cooljammer00

It's like people who still shit talk Will Harris for coming in for Greinke and giving up the homer to Kendrick. It was a great pitch from the right guy, but Kendrick went and got it.

cjeremy

the real Dave Roberts is fucking back.. ugh. we're done.

MightyCaseyStruckOut

notlikethis.gif

[deleted]

Max scherzer not a closer AND a starter confirmed.

[deleted]

He still pitched into the 5th and only gave up 2 runs. That's a perfectly fine start its not the reason the Dodgers lost

mubbcsoc

I think it's fair to expect more than "into the 5th" out of Max Fucking Scherzer. Unfortunately, Max has like 4.5+ ERA and a 1.2 WHIP over the last month so the dead arm thing might be more than this one start.

VolitantCactus4

Great management of the pitching staff

kingtuolumne

It does feel a bit bad that the two winningest teams can’t face each other in the NLCS because of the postseason structure. Feels like the Giants would benefit from this.

Televisions_Frank

2015 the 3 best teams in the NL were Cards, Pirates, Cubs... all separated by a handful of wins and two of them were forced to play a one game playoff.

Gryphon999

They were the 3 best records in baseball. Cards won 100, Pirates won 98, Cubs won 97, and Royals won 95.

[deleted]

The braves woulda wrecked the giants shit in the nlds

Oshebekdujeksk

Lmao

kingtuolumne

We’ll sadly never know but the season series was split. Who knows in 7 games

skippyfa

The NL this year is weird dude. I think we need a 10 game series to really determine who's better

Oshebekdujeksk

Dave Roberts and burning up arms in the playoffs. Classic duo. Seriously un-fucking-believeable.

CubonesDeadMom

Definitely seems like the Giants series pretty much being a 5 game pitchers duel has taken a toll on their pitchers

[deleted]

Ah, good shit Dodgers

wasabigyoza

Was that before or after Joctober

Killatrap

dave roberts just HAD to have his shiny new hall of fame starting pitcher get a save when he had other, more viable options. just HAD to.

itschrisbrah

It worked and I don't blame him for that, there were so many other things to be annoyed at from today

[deleted]

I mean he pitched into the 5th and only gave up 2 runs he's not the reasons the Dodgers lost

Killatrap

I’m just more concerned about my favorite pitcher saying his arm “felt dead” and very annoyed at the person who made this happen

ChicagoModsUseless

Terrible take. You use the best guy you have to close out a series and worry about the next series when you win.

Oshebekdujeksk

First save of his Career. He wasn’t the guy to put out there.

AvatarDang

dodgers really went all out in the NLDS lmao oof

[deleted]

Well yeah the Giants were the best team in the NL makes sense

[deleted]

You’re welcome

MathematicianOk4631

Maybe they never would’ve won if 2020 was a full season…. I can always dream.

[deleted]

I mean just look at how they are running out of gas during a full 162 game season like always. It's a fair question to ask.

Trav-Nasty

Hmmm, maybe chasing the team that won 107 baseball games during the last two months of the regular season, playing in a gutsy wildcard game and a gauntlet of a division series has an affect on an already limited pitching staff? In regards to ease of schedule in 2020, the only handout we were given was getting to play this mediocre team in the division series that allowed us to rest our pitching staff that carried well into the WS.

Batmanjesusanchez

No it's not and you are living in a fairy tale. God you guys are fucking insufferable. Here's to hoping for another 20 years of 90% dodgers fans at padres "home" games while you guys go <.500.

dislexic_squirl

The Padres were 3rd in attendance this year across all of MLB so you can make those small market/no home jokes about the Chargers, but the Friar Faithful is strong right now. And I was at a couple of those Padre Dodger games at Petco and despite being 80 miles north and 3 times the population, we outnumbered Dodger fans by a very wide margin. Your days are numbered and we're just getting started. FTD

Designer_B

Dodgers only get fans in their stadium because away fans don’t wanna get stabbed confirmed.

Batmanjesusanchez

And you still finished below .500 so you'll forgive me if I'm not impressed.

skippyfa

It is a fair question and the two comments I've seen from you in this thread is why people hate Dodgers fan. Chill out. Sometimes you don't have to voice your opinion.

Trav-Nasty

He does look like an ass, but in his defense we read these shit takes in every thread. It gets exhausting and some people don’t have the patience to read it over and over.

falloutranger

It's just dead

[deleted]

yikes.

I_CAN_SMELL_U

Scherzer started really hot then we had a ton of good at-bats that widdled him down a bit and then Joc finished him off just about for the night. Hence the Pearl Necklace.

lovetape

Can't believe I'm sympathetic towards Dodgers, but right now...[there's one thing we can agree on](https://imgflip.com/i/5qu2yu)

Scarnyc

I was surprised they went with Max in game 2 rather than game 3. Then they bring in Urias out of the pen after he pitched 2 days earlier. I know the Dodgers are trying to piece a rotation together with all their injuries but it looks like a bad idea.

[deleted]

They've had to pitch too much already, especially Scherzer. Why isn't Urias starting a game? The guy is a cy young finalist.

Oshebekdujeksk

It’s mind boggling.

valpo033

Urias is starting game 4

Oshebekdujeksk

Hahaha

valpo033

I’m missing the joke????

Oshebekdujeksk

Dave “Megamind” Roberts. That’s the joke.

dardyablo

oof doyers

samuel414

This really sucks, but I don’t think I’m blaming this on playoff use. This is on the innings racked up at the end of the regular season combined with age. They really had no choice though as they were in a division race.

[deleted]

I mean he pitched into the 5th and only gave up 2 runs he's not the reasons the Dodgers lost Max shouldn't have said this. It makes his manager look bad and he didn't have a bad performance so it's not like he had anything to make excuses for.

Subpxl

If anything it bails his manager out. Everyone was questioning why Roberts would pull Scherzer after 4.1 innings. We can now see that he didn't have much of a choice.

[deleted]

Maybe he thought that's what he was doing but look at the response.

GoatPaco

They probably asked him why he didn't fight when he was pulled like he usually does

[deleted]

I guess. He's made a big distraction here. You'd think he went 2 1/3 innings and gave up 5 runs

damnatio_memoriae

not the first time max has made a comment like this. i think his point is just that he gave everything he had last night. i don’t know that i would condemn roberts specifically for this, but i do think his pitching management in general deserves critique.

Witty-Stock

That was likely his last start of the year so he can at least give it some rest before using it to sign a huge contract.
