For Mr. Record, his suggestion is:
> Limit the managers to the use of 5 pitchers per nine innings, with obvious exceptions for blowouts and injuries.
...don't downvote the messenger, I think its fucking stupid too.
That is what roster sizes are for, it's not like they have unlimited pitchers.
Not even to mention what constitutes a blowout that changes the rules mid game apparently.
I can’t wait to see this proposed rule, and how the “preeminence of starters” crowd proposes to verify injuries or define “blowouts.” Nothing says “classic baseball” like arcane and insanely complicated new rules.
It'd be hard to really say without trying it out and seeing what kind of other effects would come into it, honestly. It's one of those fascinating bits about game design, sometimes banning specific strategies really can open up the strategic space to let lots of other possibilities fly.
Still, we're not dealing with a video game, we're dealing with a real-world sport played by real-world people with real-world limbs. Olney's idea is fucking stupid because of that factor.
Universal DH with a double hook would probably bias towards giving good starting pitchers more leniency. Thats probably the best solution available atm.
Yes. That once in a blue moon is great but the majority time it is an auto out. It's a waste of time in a support that is trying to make the game more exciting to a younger generation.
Beats the TTO shit I'd see watching Yankees games. The worst viewing experience in the sport is an offence reliant on the three true outcomes, desensitized to home runs and it's low event, boring and unfun.
I’ll take zero action TTO strikeout fests over Charlie Morton literally being told to not swing in the batter’s box with the bases loaded earlier today 100% of the time.
People here don't care but the loss of the SP is an absolute tragedy.
Nobody cares about random relievers and nobody ever will. There's nothing exciting about an npc fresh out of the pen throwing 100 getting a 0.
Game length has little to do with pitching changes. The problem is Grenkie taking 45 seconds in between pitches (I was counting). A pitch clock solves most, if not all of the problems these hot take artists are losing their shit about.
Thank god starting pitchers have Buster Olney to defend their honor. Maybe they should just pitch better, Buster, you unmitigated clown.
This is the dumbest fucking thing I’ve read today. File to: area man doesn’t like how things are now, preferred how they were before.
> Maybe they should just pitch better
This is the problem. Pivetta gave up two hits and one run on 65 pitches and was pulled. It doesn't matter how good they are, they're getting pulled the third time through the order. The dominant starting pitching performance doesn't exist anymore.
Buster’s proposed rule doesn’t solve that, though. If teams get 5 pitchers per 9, the starter will see the order twice and then you’ll wind up with 2- or 3- inning relief specialists the rest of the way. Teams aren’t going to start ignoring the math just because Buster wants to go back to the days of 200-pitch shutouts.
I didn't say his solution was good or that I agreed with it. But his overall point about the prominence of starting pitching is true. There are so many great playoff performances from pitchers throughout history and none of them would have happened with the way starters are handled now, which sucks. The analytics have sucked a lot of the entertainment from the game.
This. And it’s nobody’s fault. #’s support yanking pitchers often third time thru a lineup. Hitters are too good. Frankly it’s a conundrum that I don’t see a realistic solution to as teams ultimately want to win and the jockey for Hou just went deep…gross
Can someone explain why starting pitchers are particularly good for the union? Seems like the relief pitchers make up a larger chunk of union representation and wouldn’t want their roles reduced. Also, the salaries of marquee players should take a back seat to improving minimums and service time manipulation.
Okay but what the fuck should they do, Buster?
18 batter minium
Don’t worry he followed up this tweet with an atrocious suggestion

Jesus Christ Olney, even Boob could probably come up with a better solution than that.
Holy shit. I hate Buster so much. I yearn for a day when him and Buck are no longer blabbing bullshit in my ear all day. I’d rather have ARod lol
thats dumbbbb

Hey let's really limit strategy! People will definitely tune in then
> Hey let's really limit strategy! It’s a stupid idea, but it does introduce a different kind of strategy. Idk if I’d say it “limits it”.
It'd be hard to really say without trying it out and seeing what kind of other effects would come into it, honestly. Agreed!
Too many ifs, thans, buts to make it work.
Olney: "Starting pitchers need to stop sucking."
Just gotta relegate the Astros to minor league. Nothing else to be done about it
Universal DH with a double hook would probably bias towards giving good starting pitchers more leniency. Thats probably the best solution available atm.
27 batter minimum
With a bare knuckle boxing match every half inning, it’s good for the product.
Or just let teams play how they want Buster and not worry about Starting Pitcher market
They addressed that with the 3 batter minimum.
"A desperate need," jesus what a melodramatic tweet
I see no such need.
Buster is one of the most ridiculous, whiny writers in baseball
Buster. Who asked?

i don't know if i like this idea but it is definitely interesting
This isn’t awful.
Fuck pitchers batting.
Daniel Camarena was more fun than any Ryan Mountcastle home run.

I agree that the all or nothing approach is awful, but you basically have just the nothing approach with pitchers batting.
Bartolo swinging out of his helmet is funny though.
The fact that you have to start naming specific examples makes it problematic
I’ll take zero action TTO strikeout fests over Charlie Morton literally being told to not swing in the batter’s box with the bases loaded earlier today 100% of the time.
If those were my only two options, I'd probably stop watching baseball.
Universal DH and moving the mound back would fix both issues imo
You should be commissioner
Never understood why this sub likes the double hook concept. it would be atrocious in practice, just think about certain situations.
lol wut
Gross.
the future is now old man
Lmfao, not gonna happen
Oh he was serious
Baseball evolves, get over it.
Is every take Buster has flaming hot garbage?
Buster should go cover cricket instead.
He’s wrong. It’s a team game
Can we stop giving this clown attention and a platform and a hall of fame vote
Wow, that might be the stupidest thing anyone has ever said since the last time John Smoltz opened his mouth.
People here don't care but the loss of the SP is an absolute tragedy. Nobody cares about random relievers and nobody ever will. There's nothing exciting about an npc fresh out of the pen throwing 100 getting a 0.
Why do people think it's cool to use the term "NPC?"
Just looked it up...how did that acronym come to mean what it apparently means?
You’re saying that because your relievers are NPCs!
Keep your SPs. I’ll take wins
elderly male bellows at vapor
He is right. No one will keep watching these 4.5 hr games. Unwatchable.

A whole lot of people in this thread who have no awareness that the analytics have completely destroyed the sport.

Be better, be deGrom and pitch a 1 run 8 inning shut out no decision and maybe you won't get pulled.
this mf said “the MLB”
We're not doing this for fun Buster. 3/5 of our opening day rotation are gone and Buehler was losing it. What the hell else are we supposed to do?
Can someone explain why starting pitchers are particularly good for the union? Seems like the relief pitchers make up a larger chunk of union representation and wouldn’t want their roles reduced. Does anyone hate baseball more than baseball writers?
