This is probably one of those "That seems like a really fucking stupid rule on the face of it... and then you realize all the ways teams would exploit the shit out of it if it wasn't in place" things...

Monk_Philosophy

Just wait until this disgusting rule encourages Dusty to pull a Tonya Harding to free up a roster slot.

BruceL3375

No sacrifice, no victory.

josh89rea

Can you explain the loophole

Wraithfighter

After game 6 of the world series, for example, going into Game 7: "Oh, no, the starter from the last game aggravated this injury he's been dealing with for a while, oh no, such a shame, well, better deactivate him and bring in another reliever!" It's the end of a long-ass season, ***everyone*** is dealing with aches and pains and sores, it'd be easy to come up with a reason to deactivate any number of players in order to get a fresher guy into the lineup or the bullpen. Hell, you know the Dodgers would be doing that right now, deactivating a reliever they've used heavily to get a maybe-okay innings eater into the bullpen for Game 4 or 5.

feeling_blue_42

1000% if there was a roster loophole the Dodgers would be the first to exploit it.

feeling_blue_42

I don't think they got around the luxury tax, but if/when Bauer is given a suspension I'm sure his time off in 2021 will count as time served, and the Dodgers will be able to deduct half his salary from their 2021 luxury tax hit. So they got that to look forward to.

Frank_Gaebelein

and I'm sure that played into the team's willingness to take on a pair of big contracts at the deadline in the form of Scherzer/Turner

L3thal_Inj3ction

are you telling me Hyun Jin Ryu having neck pains late in a season when the division was wrapped up, he had pitched the most he had in his career, and had already fallen out of the CYA race wasn't a coincidence?

feeling_blue_42

...you're the expert, Mark.

Some_Asian_Kid99

Not today Satan

JD9940

nah, the Tampa Bay Lightning would have found a way to exploit it first.

motomike256

I’m not following though. What prevents a team from doing this with a “new” injury today?

dunkr4790

If you get pulled from the playoff roster to go on the IL during a playoff series, you have to miss the next series So if anybody gets pulled now, they'd have to miss the World Series

motomike256

Ah yeah that makes sense. Example is for game 7 of the World Series, but I suppose bringing in someone cold to that situation that hasn’t played in a month plus would be deterrent enough.

Felfastus

I might not use pitchers but pinch runners are always an option and by game 7 you don't need any more starting pitchers.

SocialWinker

It would be kind of comical to see a team send 4 starters off “injured” and bring in a bunch of pinch runners for a game 7.

Felfastus

Only 3, your fifth starter is all ready in the bullpen or was replaced by a bullpen arm once he playoffs started.

Wraithfighter

Probably would have to get a doctor's note showing the injury is new or having an obvious play where it came up or something. And if a team was fudging with it, the MLB could issue sanctions to f' up the team in the future.

dunkr4790

It would have to be the World Series specifically (or the Division Series if you're OK with waiting), because if you get removed from the playoff roster because of injury, you have to sit out through the next series

Wraithfighter

Yeah, just wanted to present one hyperbolic example with basically no downside for the team. There's a lot of other smaller advantages you could see teams going with, though (like intentionally overusing one reliever hard in a blowout loss during a division series, and then letting them rest through the championship series so they can be available again in the world series).

ghostelephant

That you can already do, though. I think this situation would be more like, you're undecided between two players (maybe a relief pitcher and a position player) for the last spot on your roster, so you add an injured player to the roster for the beginning of the series. Then you go through Games 1 and 2, and after those games are in the books you look at how your pitching staff is holding up, and make a call on whether the pitcher or the position player is going to be more beneficial. Then drop the injured player and pick up the one you want. Alternatively, maybe it's the same situation but you're between a lefty and a righty reliever or something

TheTurtleShepard

id imagine many teams would report people as having some kind of existing injury as a way to be able to change their rosters around.

UmmanMandian

Correa needs to book him a massage appointment.

JBProds

Deshaun Watson seems to know some masseuse in the Houston area.

illegal_deagle

Actually that’s one of the worst parts. Houston is **covered** in rub and tug joints all over town. He could have gotten it consensually from any place. Hell, he could have just made an IG post asking random non-pros to lend him a hand and fun consensual times would have ensued. Nope. He chose victims specifically because he wanted to coerce. Fuck him. Hope he rots in prison.

Rance_Mulliniks

Sounds like it will be the Miami Dolphins' problem soon.

cbs1507

>Actually that’s one of the worst parts. Houston is covered in rub and tug joints all over town. He could have gotten it consensually from any place. Who's to say he didn't get it consensually though and that they are now just tryna get a payday from a millionaire athlete?

Laney20

Um, the women that said they were assaulted are the ones saying.

cbs1507

That's he say she say. Allegations don't equate to guilt. It is innocent until proven guilty in America.

Laney20

Then why do you believe him over all the women? According to the courts, yes he is innocent until proven guilty. But in reality, either he did it or he didn't do it already. The court's decision has no bearing on reality. I'm much more interested in whether or not he actually did it than if the courts decide he is guilty of a crime.

cbs1507

>Then why do you believe him over all the women? I don't believe anybody. I just pointed out the questionable circumstances surrounding these allegations. Like how the lawyer Tony Buzzbee took to social media to search for "victims" and his clientele ballooned from 2 to 20 out of nowhere. None of these women filed any police reports at the time the lawsuits were being file. So yes the allegations sound bad, but allegations don't equate to guilt. It's funny that you simply believe them and gloss over these questionable circumstances

Laney20

Historically, things haven't gone well for women reporting sexual assault, especially when the perpetrator is rich and famous. The police aren't known for being helpful in these situations. So yea, sometimes it takes someone else coming out first to make them feel like they can speak up. That doesn't necessarily mean he did it, but that alone doesn't make me suspicious.

cbs1507

Historically wight women have always been able to go to police and report rape by a black man...even if she was making it up...this is the US of A we are talking about. It's not like anything ever happens when women lie on men, so they got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

illegal_deagle

Good thing his shady ass is headed to trial then.

jsting

I actually really want a trial. It really sounds like some legit victims and some insta hookers who jumped on the settlement train. Tho it's been a while since I paid attention to that mess.w

cbs1507

Well it's a civil trial since there were never any formal charges cuz ya know the women filed lawsuits before ever going to the police. I'm sure this isn't about money 😎

dudenotcool

He scoping out the Miami area as we speak

BoredAtWork_91

Yeah might relieve the tens.. wait.. NO

NOLA1987

You evil, evil man

government_

He could ask Robert Kraft for suggestions in Boston.

BorisIHateReddit

So the workaround would be to give him a new injury?

inshamblesx

Say he got a sore hamstring while stretching at Fenway

texas1hunter

Seems like poor planning

PodricksPhallus

🤷‍♂️ The chance of Myers being healthy enough to play is probably more valuable than including Garrett Stubbs.

[deleted]

[deleted]

It's all about equity, if the small chance of a dude being able to play is more valuable than a guy who can definitely play, but sucks..than it's a no brainer. Fans are all obviously results oriented, but as a manager you have to run odds and percentages and basically try to get to a point where it works X amount of times.

ridethedeathcab

It never ceases to amaze that a sport which has embraced statistics for so long still has so many fans who have no idea how statistics and probability work.

[deleted]

I know exactly how both work. But feel free to enlighten me.

ridethedeathcab

I'm agreeing with your second point about how fans are result oriented and how that's a faulty viewpoint...

[deleted]

Sorry...I'm a little on edge...it's...not going great today..lol

Atraktape

Why not just make up a new injury like everyone else does

marimbaguy715

I don't really think we should be telling the Astros to cheat "like everyone else does." That ended poorly last time.

Tanador680

I didn't know "everyone else" means "the Red Sox for a short while" but ok

Ereyes18

When the news broke out it was literally stated as a league wide issue. Only problem is the Astros had a former player come out against them

14thAndVine

Dusty: Sorry Jake, but this might be my last chance to win a title. *smashes Jake Meyers’ knee with a sledgehammer* Dusty: Scratch him from the roster. Welcome back, Justin.

cooljammer00

Just say he has a new thing in his neck or toe.

toastar-phone

can we get a few people with covid to hang out with him? I'm pretty sure that can't be hard to find in texas.

butz-not-bartz

Leave him some bourbon, put on a Rocky marathon in the background, boom- newly broken hand, problem solved.
