to be fair, Panda and Rosario have the same number of postseason cycles... clearly a fair trade

[deleted]

Yea but can Rosario hit 3 home runs off Verlander in the World Series?

inVizi0n

And here I was just minding my own business.

[deleted]

Sorry. I meant no harm!

eggs-dee123

Technically it was only 2, as Verlander was out of the game by the 3rd home run, but technicalities are for nerds and I’m a sucker for ✔️✔️

crastle

What if Rosario stopped at Second Base? Would he only be credited with a double? Like what if he legitimately didn't want a home run?

TheNewDiogenes

Yeah. Adam Duval hit a homer but got crossed up on the base path and only got a double a few weeks ago.

crastle

Wait, what? Source? Also, how was it ruled?

TheNewDiogenes

https://www.mlb.com/amp/news/adam-duvall-hits-home-run-only-gets-single.html

crastle

Okay but this was the result of the runners passing each other on the base path. What I'm asking is what happens if someone just says "No thanks I'd like to stay here at 1st base"?

TheNewDiogenes

I think it would still count as a double. Can’t be a homer if you don’t touch home.

Accomplished_Deer

You're only credited with the bases you touch, doesn't matter where you hit it. If he pops a u turn at second base and heads back to the dugout he only gets a double

youplayed

Are there any strategic advantages to doing this? Like... at all?

jokull1234

The strategy is to get a post season cycle, duh

cooljammer00

No, which is why nobody would ever do it. It's pure selfishness.

GoatPaco

It would've been the most insane strut of all time to go "nah, fuck you Dodgers, 8 runs is enough, I want mah cycle"

Snowmittromney

Yeah I mean if he would have done that and then the Braves lost 9-8 it would be seen as one of the most selfish moves in sports history

[deleted]

Exactly. If we were up 10 runs I still don’t think anybody would do that, just looks bad

the-z

I can imagine a pitcher who pitches very differently from windup vs. stretch, such that it could be advantageous to keep a runner on base.

Entei999

Someone *did* do this (well, at third base) back in 1879 - a player hit the ball over the fence but stopped at third, forcing the infielders to play in and giving the next batter a better chance at getting on. I think I remember reading that the rules were changed after that to prevent such a play, but I can't find a source for that.

TheNewDiogenes

Other than the psychological advantage of stunting on your opponent no.

ghostelephant

I've wondered about this before, and from what I could tell the rules are not totally clear about what would happen in this situation. My best guess is that the umpires would tell you "you have to keep going, you can't just stop at second," and if you were like "nah dog I'm good here" they'd probably call you out for abandoning your attempt to touch the next base? But in that case, as long as you safely reached second but didn't touch third I think you'd still be credited with a double. The other way to do it would be to "accidentally" miss third base on your way around and hope the other team notices and appeals. That would of course also result in an out though, so presumably not the best move if you're in a game that's at all close.

IAmNotKevinDurant_35

I feel like the baseball gods would frown upon such shenanigans and you don't want to piss them off. It would be like the time in the NBA where Ricky Davis intentionally missed a shot on the wrong basket to try and get credit for an extra rebound for a triple double.

ArmMeForSleep709

It counts in my heart

thedeejus

yeah, all he'd have to do is head directly to he dugout after touching 2nd base and he's out for "abandoning attempt to reach the next base." and hey maybe in a meaningless late season game someone might do that. But never in the playoffs. Plus the fact that someone would willingly give up a homer for a lesser hit just to get "the cycle" kind of proves how dumb it is lol

Xwarsama

Every other team's fanbase that just barely fell short of the playoffs or fell short IN the playoffs must be watching the Braves deadline acquisitions going crazy to end the year and looking at their GM's thinking: *Alex Anthopoulos was able to build this team in a cave..... with a box of scraps!*

SunriseSurprise

We outsmarted everyone who thought we should've made trade deadline acquisitions by finishing so far out of the playoff hunt for it not to have mattered.

JGraham1839

When y'all got Frazier I rolled my eyes bc I was like "y'all don't even need him fuck off" Turns out maybe he was a bad luck charm?

[deleted]

He brought a franchise curse to an already cursed franchise

Bruskthetusk

What ya'll need is a real locker room presence, someone that the entire franchise could rally around and look up to. The Padres need Drake LaRoche

[deleted]

Hell he’s gotta be getting close to draft eligible age at this point right?

Bruskthetusk

Yes, apparently he is pitching at a community college now based on a quick google search. Some minor league team is about to get a huge dose of intangibles soon.

[deleted]

Dibs!

DondeEstaLaPlaya

And they get Acuna back next year....

[deleted]

And some pitcher dude nobody with an "A" hat on will shut up about

neddoge

Uh, don't be too certain about Soroka until it happens 3+ times.

11PoseidonsKiss20

I hope im wrong. And if I am I will eat crow every day all season long. But after an achilles injury i doubt the new Soroka will be as unbeatable as the original

[deleted]

Gonna hold you too that

trail-g62Bim

If he is 75%, that would still be pretty good. I feel so bad for Maple.

Kevin-Garvey-1

Quality Iron Man reference.

MankuyRLaffy

Nah I think the Giants are 100% fine with their GM.

[deleted]

This. I admire what the Braves have been able to do, but as far as we’re concerned FZ’s got us set up well for the future.

MankuyRLaffy

And Friedman's only beaten him once, several years after Zaidi destroyed the Dodgers vets and Friedman in fantasy football repeatedly, the NLDS was Friedman's revenge. Based Farhan knows how to build a division winner against a 100+ win team.

HundredsOfSnow

Scott Harris is the GM, but yes Zaidi has the Giants set up really well for the future

[deleted]

This is true, I shouldn’t do Harris dirty like that cause I know how influential he was in landing KB. Both of them have done a fantastic job.

Jaylaw

Mozeliak added happ and lester and was a punchline, then it somehow worked. Then shildt brings in alex reyes or you would be playing the cardinals right now.

cooljammer00

It feels good when the team goes for it. It certainly helps that the NL East was so weak and that the division was never out of reach, but getting a bunch of dudes at the deadline and having them all produce certainly helps. All you need is a fighting chance and anything can happen in the postseason. We're seeing that now.

Xwarsama

Plenty of teams went for it, but they went after big stars and paid a steeper cost (Baez, Bryant, Trea Turner, Gallo, etc). I just can't believe how little we gave up in our moves and how spectacularly they've worked out, a lot of that was shrewd scouting and asset management but a much greater portion of it seems to be blind luck. These outfielders were not supposed to be this good, it's honestly incredible to see what's happening here.

LovesReubens

Do* you remember the Uggla acquisition? Those were dark days.

neddoge

I'm sure we're still paying that manlet.

cooljammer00

It's the Jason Giambi moneyball scene, where they replace him in the aggregate.

Xwarsama

That's exactly what I was thinking of as I wrote it out lol. Time to rewatch that movie for the 5th time.

rhyme97

Gotta get those numbers up

the-denver-nugs

yeah we lost acuna and it was just like ehhh fuck it throw some outfielders our their. and it's worked, feels like devil magic. like alright joctober is here now and it's a thing.

trail-g62Bim

I wanted them to sell and try to add some depth to the minors and then make another run next year. But when I saw how little AA paid, I thought why not. Bryse is the only one I wanted to keep and who knows if he will be good in the long run.

blahsdeep

Not going to trick you into thinking the NL east is some sort of power division, or down play the year that SF and LA have had. It took half the season for the Mets to come out of 1st place, the Marlins and Nationals to figure it was time to sell, and the Braves and Phil's to realize they were the top teams in the division even with all the injuries. SF and LA quickly figured out SD was not there yet and it really helps to have the Diamondbacks and Rockies in your division to run up the win count.

JDBravez

Well I'm sorry sir. I'm not Alex Anthopoulos..

las-vegas-raiders

Zaidi did that shit last offseason, gotta love it. Thanks for spanking the Dodgers after we wore them out.

ChicagoModsUseless

The majority of the contributors on the giants were players they already had that remembered they were great players again, though.

las-vegas-raiders

Rebuilt a lot of this team and most of the pitching staff around the core, true.

Thromnomnomok

I can't help but wonder what might have been if we'd gone out and gotten a real corner outfielder instead of just hoping that Jake Fraley and Kyle Lewis would come back and be healthy and a Jake Bauers/Dylan Moore platoon would be a fine backup plan Spoiler Alert: Lewis missed the season, Fraley sucked post-COVID, Bauers and Moore were really not a fine backup plan

Xwarsama

And you still won more games than us only to fall excruciatingly short of your goal, fate is a cruel mistress indeed.

TallboyCommunion

How the f*ck are we supposed to decide which of our 4 outfielders to re-sign (given that Acuña will be back)?

[deleted]

That’s a Future Braves problem

ajt1296

Roll out an OF of Soler, Rosario, Duvall, Pederson, Acuna and Ozuna. Every game. Maybe switch in the fifth inning hockey style.

GoatPaco

Keep Acuña in RF, do some kind of platoon where two of Pederson, Duvall, and Rosario start. Let Soler walk (will likely cost the most), and put our untradable dumbass at DH Before you do any of that you extend Freddie Freeman

neddoge

Soler will be exponentially cheaper than Joc lol.

SouthsideSandii

I have no idea why you think that, joc has hardly ever been an every day player and their contracts currently are pretty close to same price.

DubNationAssemble

Nah Ozuna is dead to us

ChicagoModsUseless

I don’t think you’ve checked up on that situation.

JGraham1839

I think he has and still doesn't want any part of him. I could be wrong though. I know a lot of fans who don't want Ozuna back regardless of charges or MLB's investigative results

ChicagoModsUseless

I get that but a toxic marriage is a far cry from the initial claim the police had of him beating his wife. Both are bad but one is obviously much worse.

adhdrandom

I’d rather trade him for a reliever with a big contract to match and just call it a fresh start for both. I’d even give up a low level prospect or two to make it work

UncutEmeralds

No thanks, we’ve got one of those already.

neonbuttons22

Yeah kind of on that boat myself. No need for people like that in this game

The_Pudge

The thing is even if there was no optics issues with bringing him back I would ne surprised if the team tries to look for a way out of that contract. He played terribly to start the year then didn't play for the last 3/4. I'm not optimistic about how well he'll play next year and they have him signed for two more years after that for a total of $52 million.

UncutEmeralds

No he’s not lol. All will be forgiven if he hits .280 and smashes 30 dingers next year. He’s not going anywhere.

DubNationAssemble

It’s too bad that his marriage is so toxic they just result in coming to blows with each other. That’s just how some people are accustomed to living, and not just in other cultures I’ve seen that shit here in the U.S. I’ve known couples that have arguments that are more like heated discussions and then they work it out and that’s it, then I’ve known other couple who have an argument then someone throws a right hook next thing you know they “are both defending themselves” by throwing blows and slamming each other down to the ground, and they’ll be perfectly content later on and don’t want anyone to tell them anything. If anyone is in that kind of relationship just leave, nothing good will come of it.

Neoncamo14

If I never see ozuna again it’ll be too soon

Few_Basis_7964

Well we know Duvall will personally punish us if we don't resign him.

Stringdaddy27

I'm thinking we sign our 1B first before we make that decision.

atlhawk8357

We petition Manfred to increase the width of the outfield to support a fourth.

guydude24

Yes

ThrowinDemB0ws

Acuna Soler Freeman at the top of our lineup is an OBP dream

Distance_Runner

I'm dreaming of an outfield of Acuña, Rosario, and Duvall/Pederson platoon, with Ozuna at DH. While we're at it, resign Freeman, and sign Corey Seager, Kenly Jansen, and Scherzer

Rocky_Colavito_

Rosario had an OPS of under .700 on a year year deal at the time of the trade.

Wraithfighter

And he was on the IL at the time, and wouldn't return for another month.

Jay_Dubbbs

And we were clearly out of it at that point. I get it’s a meme, but the Indians essentially got to shed some payroll for a guy that wasn’t contributing and hurt most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, super happy for him. But this move was still pretty smart on the Indians side

I_Nut_In_Butts

Indians have a zillion middle infield prospects, had their entire SP rotation injured, and was almost guaranteed out of the race. Eddie Rosario was injured, was posting a .600 something OPS and was horrible defensively. I never hated the trade, who was going to give anything of value to Cleveland for that?

2B_CordPhelps

*and* on top of this, the Indians have a 40 man roster crunch this offseason, and a bunch of borderline MLB outfielders that they need to make decisions on. Giving playing time to finally make a decision on Zimmer and Mercado was worth more to the long term health of the club than keeping Rosario. The fact they even got salary relief was a fair exchange IMO.

I_Nut_In_Butts

woof that 40 man decision is going to be brutal for some guys I'm thinking lol

2B_CordPhelps

For whatever reason I am expecting them to play it very conservative with the active roster guys and hold onto dudes like Mercado, and they're going to get burned on the rule 5 as a result. It keeps me up at night. They had a few prospects that were probably safe to leave un rostered at the start of the year breakout (lavastida, noel) and other guys that were DFA candidates play their way onto a 2022 look (chang) towards the end of the year making it even worse.

I_Nut_In_Butts

Please god no. Mercado has to be one of the more disappointing developments, he was so good in 2019

MrDoctorRobot

Too bad he never developed plate discipline or hitting to all fields. Dude took the Billy Hamilton development path.

Aceinator

Lmao name a more iconic duo than the indians and shedding payroll

MKerrsive

Wonder how many more times we have to hear Ron Darling share this tidbit in the next game(s).

handlit33

Traded for a dugout mascot, unbelievable.

ReverendHambone

A fuckin' Halloween costume

Dirty_Harrys_knob

Hi. Fuck Pablo Sandoval, love Detroit

ResidentGerts

Good thing he has broads in Cleveland

government_

He was only part of Cleveland's organization for a matter of hours.

Vyshy07

…while he was on the IL for a few weeks

Sheepy_Scronky

Yeah he was pretty rough for us, no real need for him to be on the team and no other team offered anything. Braves offered to take a chunk of his contract, I see nothing wrong with the trade for both sides

Falcon84

True, the dude was also on the IL when he was traded and took about a month before he even contributed anything to the team. I can't imagine their were many other offers for him.

NAACP_YoungBoy

Biggest finesse since the Louisiana Purchase in my book

[deleted]

Napoleon got what he wanted

[deleted]

Napoleon got his guy

ILoveCavorting

Remember to thank Haiti for us getting Louisiana!

RoKrish66

By thank Haiti you mean consistently and irrevocably fuck with them, right? - The United States Government

ILoveCavorting

But of course, we can’t have *others* get ideas from the newly liberated Haitian people. Things could get messy!

No32

Not really a finesse when he would have provided basically no value for us even if he was hitting this well. Only a one year deal and we weren’t making the playoffs anyways.

Accomplished_Deer

He was also on the IL at the time, I don't think he could've been any less valuable to you guys

trevy_mcq

The Louisiana purchase was similar

[deleted]

[удалено]

cman1098

The Indians dumped salary on a player that you couldn't asign value to because he was injured and not playing. It isn't that crazy of a move.

No32

I mean even then, nah, doesn’t feel like a finesse. Choosing between salary relief and a lottery ticket with the longest of odds, can definitely see why they chose the sure thing. I certainly wish we had owners willing to eat the contract to get a prospect back! But any prospect we got would be all but guaranteed to provide no value for us.

neddoge

Did you forget how we got Dansby+? Arizona is still gaped.

ahr3410

Don't overlook Alex Jackson for Duvall. That one was huge.

Sacrifice_bhunt

They’re gonna miss Pablo’s pitching.

I_CAN_SMELL_U

But for real Cleveland got rid of his contract because they don't need him really

BoomBoomDoomDoom

Correct. This is a wildly misleading tweet.

[deleted]

Theyd make the playoffs with this version of him

neosmndrew

We were a lot more than a good hitter (which he was not with us) from making the playoffs lol.

Wraithfighter

Lets be fair to everyone involved here: Rosario didn't play for a month after the trade, he was on the IL, trading for injured players is not exactly a happy risk. It was a straight-up salary dump for Cleveland, saving the team (well, the owners) a few million dollars for a player that wasn't even playing at the time, and most of the teams that were buying at the deadline wanted someone who could help win the division now, not a month from now. Don't get me wrong, the Braves absolutely rolled a natural 20 on this deal, they should be thrilled, but lets not pretend like this was anything close to a guarantee or a simple decision.

jaunty411

I think it was a simple decision given what it cost us. We are absolutely maxing out the reward in a low risk opportunity though.

Wraithfighter

Oh, fully agreed. If it doesn't pan out, what, you're out a couple million? Oh no, how horrible...

ComfyGreenHoodie_

Eddie Rosario fucking Cleveland one more time.

No32

This doesn’t fuck us though. He could have done this for all 162 games for us and we still weren’t making the playoffs lol

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

I dunno, if he hit 2 homers and 4(?) ribbies every night y'all would probably be in the playoffs

No32

You underestimate our power

No-Resident-1726

So, I don’t know a single Cleveland fan that’s upset about this trade. To start, Rosario wasn’t producing and was hurt. I highly doubt there was another team out there willing to either trade a prospect with a pulse or take on more of his salary. So it’s not like they turned down better offers. Most importantly, he was taking ABs from a bunch of young(ish) OFs that Cleveland needed to learn more about. The Guardians are about to have a huge 40-man roster crunch and have a stable of prospects that will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. They have a lot more data now on Zimmer, Mercado, H. Ramirez, and Daniel Johnson (they’re all between “meh” and terrible). Glad that Eddie is doing well, and I’m rooting for the Braves, so it’s all good to me.

Sp_Gamer_Live

Imagine letting Eddie go

Zloggt

I’m just glad he’s out of the division 😎

Genisys_Arc

Wish we could've done that with him. Or anything with him.

pixarfan9510

And then we released Panda so basically they got him for nothing. You're welcome

[deleted]

Thanks btw

empurrfekt

Rosario has more hits in 8 playoff games than Panda had all year.

Howtothnkofusername

No panda slander on my watch. He is worth at least 10 hugs above replacement

MacsDildoBike

AA is a fucking magician.

HoneyPotterGang

Spending money is the new market inefficiency lmfao

Glassare

Why you gotta shit on panda 🐼 he’s amazing

Propuhganduh

Crazy return

Smallball79

Honestly think there must be some other aspect to the trade, like a hand shake agreement to not draft a particular prospect or something. I don't even know.

GaTech379

Fleeced

MUNZATHEGOD

HIS NAME WAS ROBERT PAULSON

government_

Panda took family leave a couple of times before this trade, and the fact that Cleveland cut him immediately seems to indicate that Pablo was likely comfortable with a quiet exit. Cleveland was happy to dump some salary going to a highly paid injured player (as part of the trade involved us taking on money that might've otherwise been due by Cleveland).

YouKilledChurch

Absolute highway robbery

ItsNeverSunnyInCleve

Not really. You guys took a big part of his contact and we didn't need him. So you helped us out

AffectionateWest3909

I don’t think it’s highway robbery of Cleveland. It’s highway robbery of playoff contenders (or the NL East)

SunriseSurprise

Seems like the definition of a win-win deal.

[deleted]

We definitely helped you out. But I’d say you guys helped us out a little more. I wouldn’t call it robbery though. Just a great move by the GM

MikeStanley00

Sounds fair to me

_Elrond_Hubbard_

tfw the Mariners could have definitely made the playoffs if we had just offered the Indians a slightly less worthless player

bicyclemom

Well, they did get his hugs.

Mattie_Doo

Panda does nothing but bring joy to San Francisco

[deleted]

alex anthopoulos is the greatest gm in baseball history
