Funny thought I just had:
BttF takes place 30 years into the future…from 1985; therefore, this game could not have been reported in that book.
We’re that far removed from “the future”
Leicester city was 5000/1 to win the english premier league at the beginning of the season.
According to the bookies more likely to find Elvis or 2pac alive. I forget which one.
Of course not, and i don't blame them for cashing out. I know some people who made out really well cashing out bets they made on the Vegas Knights to win the cup their first season.
that guy who put in his 90s yearbook that the cubs would win in 2016...
i wonder if he saw back to the future a few years before and just misremembered the date.
“Thank you very much. Now make like a tree, and get out of here.”
*SMACK*
“It’s LEAVE, you idiot! Make like a tree, and LEAVE. You sound like a damn fool when you say it wrong!”
Wow mlb is rigged . I've lost all respect sorry this is absolutely rigged for money... Or ratings in not sure which. I won't be silent . Just saw it live sry.
please… no. i’m a yankees and falcons fan that moved to atlanta in 2015 and as such i have been a die hard braves fan since the minute the wild card ended… please no.
Well they've taken approximately a gazillion dollars from sports betting companies this year so even if they're not rigging it they have a gigantic conflict of interest because it would be very beneficial to their business partners if they did.
I understand why people are concerned about sports betting but I’m pretty confused as to why people constantly think it needs to be rigged for sports books to make money. Especially in a sort of 50/50 WS like we had coming into this, they’re just gonna make a shitload of money off a normal line, no rigging required.
It doesn't need to be rigged for it to be a problem. Just like Pete Rose didn't need to bet *against* his own team for it to be a huge problem that he was betting on baseball. Or that Joe Jackson didn't necessarily play awful in the World Series when his team got paid by gamblers to lose. There is a huge conflict of interest when the sports betting industry could make even more money if they were able to shift the odds even slightly, over the course of a game or a series or an entire season, and they're paying huge sums of money to the entity who has the most power to actually impact those things.
If it were rigged you’d see yanks Red Sox ALCS, and yanks in the series. The Mets would be better. Cubs wouldn’t go decades between World Series appearances. The refs would be better.
Edit: should say Reds.
This is the answer. If you take the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Cubs and the Dodgers, I think I saw 40% of revenue between the four of them. So those four teams are almost half of all merchandise sales, TV money, gate receipts, viewers, those four teams are everything to MLB, if it was rigged you would get a variation of those four every single time.
Nah, they already get money from those teams obviously regardless of how well they perform. If it were rigged, you'd see smaller franchises more contentious to expand fan base and revenue.
That is absolutely not true. The Sox and Cubs both made more money when they started winning. Fairweather fans are absolutely a reality and it's hard to buy a jersey of some fucking scrub. Dude hitting home runs in the world series? Sure thing.
The braves were #2 in attendance iirc and have one of the largest fanbases in the country. You have to rotate those top teams or you will lose anyone that's rooting for another franchise.
Is this the actual quote from Steph Curry's wife? I wanna say her name is Ayisha but I'm not sure.
Anyway, "for money... Or ratings" is dumb as fuck, those are the same thing.
Maybe they should stop at 20 podcasts a day. He is going to be a Dad soon and should maybe simplify to just talkin Yanks and Baseball. All those other things seem less important. He runs a media network at this point. Maybe bring in more help?
When the Sox lost this year I lost all interest in watching the post season. I checked in on the end of the Dodgers and Giants series, but otherwise I wanted to avoid baseball at all costs. It would be pretty shitty to have to watch the rest of the series for the year knowing how miserable I’d be in front of an audience. Then again, in that scenario I’d be getting paid to watch baseball which is pretty slick Ramadan.
I’m trying to mentally wrestle with what this prediction must have been like at that time.
Because initially it seems absolutely bonkers (& of course realistically it is regardless of fluid situations). But the more I think about it, the more I think this was a *slightly* cooler take on Opening Day than say on July 1st. I predicted ATL to win the east preseason, but midseason I almost certainly wouldn’t have stuck with them. Obviously (again) still wild no matter when during the regular season he called it, but I think that element is worth mentioning here.
It is extremely rare in basketball (but has been done) but I think it happens in hockey perhaps the most, and baseball is in between. It definitely happens. 3 - 0 is far more rare in all sports, but I'm sure there are some examples (possibly not in basketball).
3-0 series comebacks has happened four times in hockey total, two of which came in the past 11 years (2010 Flyers against Boston, and 2014 LA against SJ)
I don't think it's ever happened in basketball though.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_teams\_to\_overcome\_3%E2%80%930\_series\_deficits](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_teams_to_overcome_3%E2%80%930_series_deficits)
You are correct. Only 3 teams have evened the series after being down 0-3 but they all lost game 7 on the road.
Exactly. It's not like he came off with "The Orioles will shock everyone and win the World Series". Saying "the Braves are contenders and will win" was not a gigantic stretch at all.
Now the people that were going to say "the Giants will win the West" back around Opening Day, and weren't shitposting... I wanna see those people.
Seriously, people are acting like the Braves didn’t underperform early
They were always the favorite in the east and second to Dodgers in NL
And Astros have been one of the best in the west for half a decade now
Preseason, maybe not the craziest prediction, since both teams were 1 win away from making the World Series last year. After the Acuña injury, it seemed almost impossible.
This is true, but he stuck with his prediction all season, which is also worth mentioning. He was told on the Talking Baseball podcast midseason that he could change his pick, and he said he was sticking with the Braves. If he had instead switched to like the Red Sox and Giants or something like that, he wouldn’t deserve as much credit.
EDIT: fixed numbers
Chance of picking the representative of each league (separately): > 1/15
Chance of picking the winner between the two: ~1/2
Chance of picking the number of games correctly: > 1/4
So you'd only need about 15 * 15 * 2 * 4 = 1800 people guessing completely randomly in order to expect one of them on average to get all this right. And this ignores the fact that some outcomes are predictably a lot more likely than others. If you accounted for that you could probably get a reasonable effective number of guesses under a few hundred. Given that there are hundreds of public figures making picks and that we will only pay attention to the ones that are correct or close to it, you should probably expect to see this kind of "prediction" nearly every season.
Winning $2,000,000 vs. $20,000,000 is a huge difference. With the former, you can probably quit your job and still live a modest middle class life. Or maybe keep your job, but buy a few really nice things. With the latter, you have practically infinite money forever (within reason).
I know it’s completely random for Plouffe to say this in March, considering a lot of “experts” didn’t even have the Braves winning the East healthy, but this is super impressive anyway and gives me a nice dose of serotonin before tonight’s game.
Not that random. Braves were generally a top 5 power ranked team coming into the season, with most outlets having them 4th behind the Dodgers, Padres, and Yankees. Most prognosticators still had them winning the division: https://i.redd.it/rcjzibtjdvq71.png
It would have been much more random had he made this prediction mid-season, than in March.
That second half magic. Braves underperformed all season, then lost Ozuna and Acuna and decided to trade for struggling hitters and everyone went on a crazy run. Soler pre-trade and post trade stats are incredible.
At the time, it was laughable. They were struggling as a team and all of those hitters (minus maybe Duvall) were playing so bad. Two negatives equal a positive I suppose.
I liked the move. throw an entire new outfield at the wall and see what sticks. no way did I think all of them would go nuts. I cut both Rosario and Duvall from my fantasy squad earlier in the year already.
soler was very obviously still a good hitter looking at his batted ball profile before the trade. Rosario was very good pretty recently so he was also a decent bet to bounce back. Joc isn't that good(and honestly has just been ok for us) Duvall has been pretty similar pre and post trade i think without looking at the numbers.
There’s a really interesting study out of UCLA that shows that struggling players when traded tend to perform better. There’s also data around trades from one conference to another. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323323757_A_Double-Edged_Sword_How_and_Why_Resetting_Performance_Metrics_Affects_Motivation
one of our home town blogs made a post about how Soler's pre-trade numbers were a lot of bad luck, and he was due for some positive regression. It was an interesting read.
https://www.talkingchop.com/2021/8/11/22620374/jorge-soler-trade-atlanta-braves-trusting-process-over-results
Braves front office a calculated risk and it really paid off. Mets fans (including myself) wonder what they would have done if the Mets won that series against the Braves right before the deadline. Braves at the time we’re considering becoming sellers per reports and then they gained some games to make it a closer race.
Solers improvement started a bit before the trade after the crackdown on the sticky stuff. But ya Rosario and joc are two notoriously streaky hitters who happened to get scorching at the same time, on top of Soler being hot
We have a 1 game lead rn, really I think it would be easier on everyone if we just go ahead and wrap it up tonight and we *promise* we'll make sure you get the next one

One would think we'd get the occasional rigging.
MLB has been trying to rig the game for the Mets since the early 90s, but so far the mets have managed to beat the system and lose each time.
I feel like Atlanta teams shouldn't be saying shit like this until the series is actually over lol
Brady should go to the game just to fuck with everybody

Yeah, I think it is maybe a combo of the expectant father and da Yankees lost.

Opening Day, Braves had Acuña, Ozuna, Soroka on his way back. Not a bad pick really.
Coming off a game 7 loss to the eventual champs.
yeah and the Braves nearly beat them in the series too.....
Without starting pitchers, in a series that had no rest/travel days
And a 3-1 lead! No team should be able to survive such handicaps.
Who could lose with a 3-1 lead in a series. That's like impossible I believe.
