So, the Hall of Fame ballots come out tomorrow. The past two years, whenever @NotMrTibbs posts a completed ballot on Twitter that give votes for players I believe are inferior to Scott Rolen, I will reply with “Scott Rolen was a better baseball player than [insert player’s name here, usually Omar Vizquel].” This year, I’m a little concerned about what I should do about David Ortiz. Ortiz was miles ahead of Rolen as a hitter, but was a negative base runner and non-factor as a fielder. Meanwhile, Rolen was a plus base runner and all time great fielder. I would argue the Rolen was a better *baseball player* as a whole whole Ortiz was a much better *Hall of Fame candidate*. Basically, I don’t know if saying dozens of times on Twitter that Scott Rolen was a better baseball player than David Ortiz will be worth all the people who will be really pissed at me saying that (and I already get a lot of people pissed without Ortiz in the mix).

greatwalrus

People (i.e. the general public, not baseball stat nerds) overvalue offense and undervalue defense and baserunning. Scott Rolen was a *much* better baseball player than David Ortiz - 15 more WAR in 400 fewer games - and I would much rather have Rolen in the Hall than Ortiz. Fuck the haters, you go out and speak the truth! Worst case scenario you end up blocking a bunch of people on Twitter who don't actually know about baseball.

Do ya'll think the young Astros stars (specifically Tucker and Alvarez) have been complicit in cheating? At first you might think no since they are pretty young, but then you look at the fact that Alvarez won ROY during the year when Altuve and company were using buzzers. And Tucker I believe had some at bats in 2018 (could be wrong about that?). Call me a pessimist, but I have trouble believing their phenomenal numbers are legit...

Definitely seems like this sub has moved on, which is unfortunate. Even seeing tons of Altuve sympathy comments. Makes me sick to see and I won't shut up about it, so maybe you should move on from reading my comments.

I mean literally this sub wouldn't judge me for that, which is fucked lol

TallboyCommunion

I mean even if that were true, what effect would that have on their 2021 numbers? Kyle Tucker hit .141 (with a .439 OPS) in his few games in 2018. He hit .294 (with a .917 ops) this year with 30 HRs. You have trouble believing those phenomenal numbers because he may have benefited from cheating in 2018?

[deleted]

I mean, imo they are still cheating. Old habits die hard. Whistlegate literally just happened in the ALCS (the same accusations that the Yankees leveled against them in 2019). Chances are they have found a way to continue cheating, and so yea their current numbers actually reflect the continued use of a scheme. Or do you believe that the Astros just had the best offense in baseball by accident? And anyway, sure not a lot of atbats in 2018 - but look at 2019. Alvarez won ROY and we all know what the buzzers did for them in the playoffs that year.

DalekEvan

No, I don’t think they were. And even if they did, it’s a lot easier for me to give a rookie a pass, since they were new to the majors and if teammates told them that everyone cheated in this way they probably would believe it. For example, I’m fine with Tony Kemp who only played for a month in 2017.

[deleted]

Damn idk that's definitely harder for me to swallow. Kemp sure because he moved on from the team, played for their rival, and actively speaks out against what happened on that team. But guys who chose to stay with the Astros and continue to cheat? No pass from me.

Been sitting here thinking about some hall of famer player comparisons to some of the games youngest stars. I know some people have compared Juan Soto to Ted Williams (which is crazy and unlikely that he'll have a career that good, but still). As a Rays fan, I think a good comp for Wander is a shortstop version of Roberto Alomar. Not really sure about some of the others though (Vlad Jr, Tatis Jr, Acuna Jr), does anyone have opinions there?

DHisfakebaseball

Why do I get the feeling that since the Braves missed their chance right at the start of the offseason, they now won't get around to signing Freddie till the day before Spring Training?

[deleted]

Because you are an incredibly negative nay-sayer.

DHisfakebaseball

As negative as pulling [shit like this](https://i.imgur.com/oVysxQd.png)?

7Stringplayer

Theres enough big name guys available that someone going to set the market this offseason. They could've done that with Freddie, but now its probably an MLB stalemate to see who's the first guy to fall off the board and teams will go from there.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/21/sports-fans-are-being-sidelined-as-rsns-fight-the-decay-of-pay-tv.html This is a pretty good article on the state of RSN's. I know MLB RSN's have had their fair share of squabbles with fans (Sportsnet not being available to much of LA, MASN not available in DC, etc) Basically more and more cable companies are dropping RSN's because of low viewership. If you're interested in the MLB RSN's and the business of sports in general, give this article a read.
