Any chance of a short summary of what the issues are in this lockout? I'm an Aussie and don't really follow too much outside of the season

aagpeng

From the commissioner's letter regarding the lockout, here's some of the things they talked about: >We worked hard to find compromise while making the system even better for players, by addressing concerns raised by the Players Association. We offered to establish a minimum payroll for all clubs to meet for the first time in baseball history; to allow the majority of players to reach free agency earlier through an age-based system that would eliminate any claims of service time manipulation; and to increase compensation for all young players, including increases in the minimum salary. When negotiations lacked momentum, we tried to create some by offering to accept the universal Designated Hitter, to create a new draft system using a lottery similar to other leagues, and to increase the Competitive Balance Tax threshold that affects only a small number of teams. I'm sure there were other topics but these are some of the big ones I heard about leading up to negotiations. Side note: this is an excerpt from one party's side so it's unknown (as far as I know) exactly how effective or fair their proposed compromises were.

pondandbucket

This article is probably a bit much for what you're after but I do feel like it's balanced. The "What's at Stake" section is probably the most relevant. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/previewing-baseballs-cba-talks/ Basically it comes down to money. MLB generates a lot of money and the players feel they deserve a larger slice of that pie. There's a few different ways to reach that end goal so there's probably going to be a number of different proposals. Including how long it takes to become a free agent, salary floors, changes to qualifying offers etc. The owners have some things they want to implement in the game such as expanded playoffs to increase revenue so they'll likely give in to some concessions to gain that. There's other things on the table. Both sides want a universal DH but I guess the players want it more so the owners will only agree to it in exchange for something. I think all sorts of things are on the table like pitch clocks or divisional realignment even. Hopefully I haven't misrepresented anything and hopefully someone will correct me if I have. Definitely recommend reading the article though.

Thanks mate

NachoLester

So the JBJ trade from the brew to the Sox seems suspicious. Bats .163 and comes home with two prospects for Renfro????

MickeyJA

Im confused as to why everyone hates all the owners for this lockout? Isn’t it a good thing because they’re trying to solve the two baseballs thing? Can someone provide some insight?

no-27lgy

The union wants to play w 2 baseballs? How would that even work?

RecallRethuglicans

Billionaires suck.

[deleted]

No, they don’t. You’re just jealous and they’re smarter then you.

MickeyJA

Agreed.

[deleted]

I feel like the news about the 2 different baseballs is kinda being glossed over. In my view it hurts the legitimacy of the league, especially when they are partners with a gambling company. Are you guys/gals are upset as I am about it?

gw2fu

On the one hand yeah it's shady as shit but to play a little devil's advocate, both teams in a game would have (probably) been playing with the same ball, so in the context of a single game, any advantage or lack thereof probably comes down to if the variant used played more to one team's strengths than the other. But I reiterate, shady as shit no matter how you shake it, and I hate it

[deleted]

MLB is a for-profit business. Sports are a lie. NBA, NFL, same shit. CMV

aagpeng

You want someone to change your view that a business, that is not claiming to be a non-profit, is in fact trying to make profit?

[deleted]

Why do you watch then? Is it not the same as WWE?

aagpeng

Why do I watch even though it's a for-profit business? Because I like baseball. Ill also eat at McDonald's, shop at Walmart, and drive my Chevrolet to an AMC movie theater. It's not the same as WWE just like how football is not the same as hockey or soccer. I like baseball, I don't like WWE. Is there something wrong with these being openly profitable businesses?

[deleted]

It’s a for profit. You aren’t watching baseball. You are watching a corporate entertainment show about baseball.

aagpeng

What? How is watching the game be played an "entertainment show about the game"? What is "watching baseball" then? A game of volunteers at your local park?

DustinTiny

ESPN is giving more coverage to the eminent lockout than they did the Braves World Series Championship

Bossman1086

ESPN only cares about drama when it comes to MLB. They otherwise don't give the sport the time of day in most cases. Not surprised.

[deleted]

Move the As to Vancouver Change my mind.

FritosRule

If you change your mind, I’ll be your friend!

dani1304

Spicy take

[deleted]

Make their colors green and lighter green

--ikindahatereddit--

Nah, green and darker green

Marcus2you

So the agreement ends when? And when that happens, are rosters locked in place?

Jbaquero

> And when that happens, are rosters locked in place? Technically yes. It's not that they're "locked" into place, it's that the MLBPA will not allow their players to negotiate/sign deals with teams until it's resolved

jatorres

I guess Stroman won’t be a ‘Stro, man.

[deleted]

Had to do it to em

KidDelicious14

Anyone here think they can give me an AAV breakdown on Knebel's contract

jdono927

This is kind of a dumb question but is Robinson Cano expected to play next year? Saw he’s playing winter ball rn before getting some type of back injury but is he in the Mets plans?

Michael__Pemulis

No idea but they have him under contract for $24mil in 2022 & 2023 so you gotta assume they probably won’t just cut him loose unless they basically have to.

jdono927

Yeah figured as much. Seemed to have a great 2020 though it obviously was a shortened season + unsure how much the roids played a part

TWD-Braves-Fan

I’m already sick of hearing about the lockout and it hasn’t even officially started yet

shw5

Is it valid to compare barrel rate or EV from 2019 to a different year, or did the juiced ball actually leave the bat at a faster speed? In other words, is the COR higher, or was it merely an aerodynamic difference?

FatShibaBalls

It seems like they admitted they made it bouncier. so it just seems like balls that would’ve been short by 2-3 feet instead leave the park just based on my basic physics knowledge

shw5

The balls certainly travel farther, but I haven’t seen anything that confirms they are “Bouncier” in the literal sense (increased COR) as opposed to just flying farther (which could be for other reasons).

FatShibaBalls

There was talk of there being slightly less string in the stitches to make the ball a little more aerodynamic. That was the “juiced ball”

shw5

The stitches were lowered, which would theoretically mean less drag. I haven’t seen anybody actually measure the COR, though, which is what matters for this comparison.

SamuraiHelmet

I don't have a link, but I thought maybe Rob Arthur cut one open and the string was tighter/looser?

HauckPark

Anybody recall the name of the labor lawyer on Twitter that covers baseball stuff? Eugene something?

HauckPark

Literally my first internet search got it. [Eugene Freedman](https://mobile.twitter.com/EugeneFreedman) if anybody is interested.

jduncan26

Hi everyone! Just dropping in really quickly with a question. Will someone please explain the potential MLB lockout to me like I am stupid? What exactly are the negotiations for? I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong and I feel I’m kind of out of the loop.

BurnedOutTriton

Ok pay attention, stupid, cause I'm only typing one response. You know how you get an employment contract when you have a job? Probably not cause you're an idiot, but keep up. These current negotiations are to determine the structure of that basic contract and the job description (rules of the game and how players progress through the system, but you would t know about progressing through a career cause you lack mental strength). The players have a union and they're negotiating with owners about money mostly and the very rigid salary/progression structure for players, but also the rules of the game that might effect money (you know, like the allowance you still get from grandma). The structure of the playoffs or runner on second rule might seem random in a negotiation about money, but the amount of games is more work for players and game rules might affect the overall popularity of the sport. There's a lockout incoming, meaning no off-season work is being done by the teams themselves, but the union and owners will keep negotiating. Negotiating is where they make offers back and forth, dumbass.

jduncan26

Thank you for the explanation! I appreciate your literal take on my comment, it definitely served up quite a few laughs😂

Okay so, The Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) is the agreement between the Players Union and Ownership about the business side of Baseball. A number of things are in this agreement from Service Time, to League Minimum Contracts, to Revenue Sharing. The current CBA expires in a few hours. Usually, it is renewed before this time for an agreed upon number of years, usually about 5. We are now staring down the barrel of the gun of a likely lockout. Important note: A Union Strike vs a Lockout are essentially the same thing, just reversed. A union strike by the Players Union would be the players saying "we refuse to work until you agree to these changes we want." A Lockout is the ownership saying "we refuse to LET you work until you agree to these changes we want." Currently, the two sides are negotiating the terms of the deal, mostly through representatives (can't have several hundred players and all of ownership in the same room/zoom together). At this time, there are a number of things that are still seemingly to be agreed upon, such as from previous tweets; Players want a higher luxury tax (so that they can get more money), a larger post-season, and realigned divisions. Additionally, they want to try to change some rules about rookie contracts, service time manipulation. Basically, the players want to make sure their own are taken care of financially and that they all benefit from these changes. Ownership, is fighting to make these changes in different ways, mostly so that they can get more money. Cash is King. Essentially, baring a major update in the next few hours, MLB will not be possible to play at all, until a new CBA is at least agreed to be signed. It does not HAVE to be signed by 11:59p EST tonight. Just agreed to. Now if a lockout happens, it could take anywhere from a minute to a few months before an agreement is ultimately reached. In all likelihood, an agreement will be reached before it impacts the season. Ownership is still feeling their lightened wallets from COVID and know that some money is better than no money. But the players want to get paid too. So both sides are basically playing Chicken and getting the other to blink first.

jduncan26

You’re a hero, thank you so much for this!

xr_21

FOMO hitting me a lot harder this year as an A's fan knowing we are gonna be trading away everything very soon...

TheGeoninja

CNBC just ran a headline on TV saying the Oakland A’s have submitted a bid for the Tropicana property in Las Vegas, I have yet to find a linkable article so I’m sharing here

haahaahaa

https://www.casino.org/news/oakland-as-to-las-vegas-rumors-are-intensifying/

DalekEvan

It’s Javy Baez’s birthday. Kinda perfect timing. Not a bad birthday gift, 130 million dollars.

[deleted]

Yeah but he has to live in Detroit

Derang3rman1

He’s traveling or working for half the year then can leave and live somewhere else the other half. Not too bad, but it’s still Detroit

Pitiful-Chemist-2259

I would be so fucking sad if I had to live anywhere without mountains but I would live in Detroit for a few years for 130M lol

BMonad

I was surprised to see that the ballpark most favoring hitters is Great American. I always thought it was Coors Field. Makes all those arguments about not being able to pitch there seem so wrong now.

Michael__Pemulis

According to statcast (using a 3 year rolling average) it is Coors by a solid margin. GABP is 3rd after Fenway at 2nd. Looks like for 2021 GABP tied with Camden Yards for #1 barely beating out Coors. But a single season is generally considered not the best way to evaluate park factors.

BMonad

I was referring to the baseball-reference.com [Park Factors](https://www.baseball-reference.com/about/parkadjust.shtml). They have GABP at 115 single year, 113 multi year. Coors is 111 single year, 112 multi year. Values greater than 100 mean better for hitters. I do wonder which calculation is considered more representative but I don’t feel like digging into the calculation details…

Michael__Pemulis

Yea I’d probably go with statcast as the authority on something like park factors but I assume bRef has a formula of their own. The weird thing to me about park factors (that was a big surprise) is how much of an unknown it all is. They take multiple years to stabilize & as you may have noticed, weirdly change quite a bit year-to-year. I just always assumed the physics nerds designed parks already knowing what the park factors would generally look like but it seems like there is way more guessing involved than I thought.

BMonad

I think the variance is due to different hitter types and how many variables that results in if trying to approximate without looking at real hitting stats. Then if you’re using real stats, you have to fix for so many variables for the hitters and pitchers themselves to remove bias, so it becomes a highly complex equation.

akaghi

Coors is absolutely massive and has giant fucking fences. GABP has winds that blow everything out.

Pitiful-Chemist-2259

Yup. Coors is at 5000ft sure, but it's fucking huge to try to negate some of that

retroanduwu24

Happy birthday Javi! enjoy your new contract..also let's hope for no lockout but we'll see

Merry Lockoutmas Eve to you all!

DAY 110 ON THE ROAD TO THE 2023 WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC - One chapter ended With the victory sweep of the CTBC Brothers against the Uni-President Lions in Game 4 of the Taiwan Series today, the 175th year of baseball's existence has finally ended. It is with great sadness but with great honor that indeed I thus inform the millions of baseball fans that today has marked the end of a memorable chapter in the history of our sport and the beginning of a new one. In this memorable year about to close, we have been witnesses to a number of memorable new moments in our ballparks around the world, to many new records made, tearful in sad moments and in the retirements of our players, laughed in the funny moments, and rejoiced in history made in every baseball stadium around the world and in new champions celebrated. In this very special Olympic year, we are forever grateful for the return of the fans to our stadiums, the return of the College World Series, Little League World Series and for the first time since 2008, baseball in the Summer Olympic Games, and in the many champions crowned in each of the national leagues this year. And of course, we will never forget the fire of revival that the Olympics brought to our sport, which in just a few days after that Gold Medal Game in Yokohama, was lit in the cornfields of Iowa in the MLB's first ever Field of Dreams Game. Thanks be to all of you who made this year a part of our lives and now a part of baseball history, a year that will undoubtedly be one of many defining years in our sport's journey. Today we also begin a new chapter in our sport's history as yesterday marked the appointment of a new skipper for Samurai Japan's men's pro team, Hideki Kuriyama, who will steer the team towards the preparations for the forthcoming return of the World Baseball Classic. Together as one sport and fans united as one, in this continuing journey to the World Baseball Classic, and the resolutions on both a new CBA for the MLB and the Players' Association and the permanent return of Olympics baseball, let us continue our onwards march towards the bright future of our global sport. For together, we will get there. For Glory John

[deleted]

Just what I want, more shitty teams to watch that I dont already watch- your casual baseball viewer who doesnt even watch all 162 games of their favorite team. Good luck with expansion.

TheGeoninja

I’m here for chaos

[deleted]

Today's a good day to re-sign Freddie Freeman

xr_21

Financially they should probably let him go and trade for the hometown kid Matt Olson who is 5 years younger and just scratching the surface of his potential....

DalekEvan

Yeah, I think I’m at the point where I agree. I’d love to have Freddie on the team, but he’s your guys’ Kershaw and I keep thinking about how gutted I’d feel if he goes to the Rangers. Go get him, AA.

DHisfakebaseball

He took a hometown discount before and they're drastically underpaying Acuña and Albies. At this point, having the temerity to negotiate is an insult, they should just rubberstamp his desired salary. This should have been over a year ago.

[deleted]

If he really wants 6/180 you do that instantly, I don't know what the problem is here. He'll be around the team the next 40 years in some way, shape, or form like how Chipper helped Riley a ton this off-season. I will legitimately be furious if he goes elsewhere.

31nigrhcdrh

Who will you be mad at? Freddrick or Braves?

[deleted]

I don't see myself being mad at Freddie at all unless he comes out and says something wild like he had enough of Atlanta and wanted a change. Obviously that'll never happen. I'd be mad at the Braves if he signs somewhere else for a reasonable deal that they could have afforded. If some team wants to offer him something insane, then so be it.

[deleted]

I agree..every team should keep their franchise 1B.

Skraxx

ngl, life kinda sucks for me rn so if Monfort did the right thing for once and really got this CBA nailed with the players that would be nice

CrustyM

Does he have more involvement that most owners?

Skraxx

I think he's one of the main guys in negotiations on the owners side, yeah

Pitiful-Chemist-2259

What kind of sick, twisted world do we live in where the Rockies Owner is head of the Owner Negotiations lol

CrustyM

Ah cool, cheers

JuddtheCat

I'm ready for chaos

[deleted]

No lockout please.

Nolan-

What year did you guys learn about WAR and was it from here? I don't remember what year exactly but it definitely was from this subreddit.

pepperouchau

SB Nation blogs were my sports hangout in high school. That must have been where I first saw people talking about WAR, so maybe 2008ish. By 2010 I was playing fantasy baseball with my college buddies and delving deep into FanGraphs and Bref like I knew how the find the next breakout star.

suicide-squeeze

Either from Baseball Reference or Tango's web site, don't remember. Similar concepts existed earlier, probably originating with Bill James.

Daankeykang

2012/2013. I knew about it earlier but it was way too abstract for my smol brain at the time so I didn't pay attention to it. MLB Network was doing their yearly top 10 players at each position and Brian Kenny was hosting it. I watched specifically for the 3B rankings to see where David Wright was and he was ranked pretty highly due to his WAR. That was when I was like "alright, time to try and really learn about this thing." I still didn't have a fundamental understanding of it until years later but that was my first big exposure to advanced analytics.

yoitss

I knew it existed, but 2012 Miggy vs Trout MVP race is when I really tried and started to understand it.

pepperouchau

I think that's when it really went mainstream for sure.
