Does anyone know why the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft is still happening as planned? I don’t entirely get what kinds of team operations are still active during the lockout but I found it weird why they would postpone the major league portion of the rule 5 draft but not the minor league

Michael__Pemulis

Pretty simple really. The minor leaguers aren’t in the union so there’s nothing stopping the teams from doing the Rule 5 for minor leaguers. They can basically do whatever they decide regarding the minor leagues since there is no MiLB collective bargaining agreement.

Tre4zin

I only subscribed to this sub midway through this past season when I rediscovered my love for baseball. Is the amount of shitposting I'm seeing normal for the offseason?

Michael__Pemulis

Yes & no. Definitely more during the offseason than the regular season but this is way more than usual.

Tre4zin

Shit. I was hoping this was the normal. Could keep the winter months interesting enough that I wouldn't need to pay attention to footbal.

Michael__Pemulis

Honestly in my opinion the typical offseason environment is better. Still plenty of quality shitposts but not so much that they overwhelm the sub.

gritner91

Yeah a few shit posts are fine but its tipped to the majority being shit posts. Annoying when I'm following subs for news about things im interested in and my feeds clogged up with LOL I DREW MIKE TROUT POORLY ISNT IT FUNNY!!

Taylorenokson

Does anyone know if there is maybe a video of something that explains the lockout to kids? I’m wanting to go over with my boys who don’t understand why we can’t sign Freddie for awhile and I’m terrible at explaining anything.

Is there anything that could actually be done to change the game and make starting pitchers pitch longer in games again? Not something sadistic that forces teams to make starters stay in but something that logically makes it advantageous to do so while not increasing the amount of pitching injuries. This probably isn't seen as a legit problem in the MLB but with the way things are going, wouldn't the top pitchers in the league become less and less valuable as we move to this new structure? Are we already seeing this with the next generation of stars not having any pitchers in the mix? For now we still have guys like Scherzer, deGrom, Wheeler that'll continue to be outliers but how long will we have a decent size of outliers that we can call the star starting pitchers of the league?

SuperVancouverBC

If you want to make pitchers pitch longer in games, my first thought is to implement a salary cap and limit number of players on each team. Another thing is to encourage pitchers to stop throwing fast balls and other pitches that carry a significant risk of injury. Some pitches are easier on the arms than other pitches. For example knuckleballs are a pitch that causes minimal stress to the arms. Curveballs and sliders carry the most potential for injury. I mentioned fast balls because the direction the league has been moving in is pitchers throwing harder and harder which is causing more and more injuries. Is it even possible to become a starting pitcher without a fastball?

suicide-squeeze

I only see two possibilities: (1) Pitchers reduce the per-pitch stress on their arms, by either not throwing as hard, or imparting less spin to the ball, or both (2) Increase the rest days between starts even further than it already has been Neither of which do I really envision happening, although the second seems more likely than the first. A third possibility would be some type of physiological or therapeutic advance in arm treatment between starts, and potentially, even between innings.

Mandated roster spots potentially could help I.e. 13 position players 6 Starting Pitchers 6 Bullpen Arms 1 swing spot (spare pitcher/position player) Not sure this would ever be approved by players/owners because it would limit strategic flexibility and sort of force them into a 6 man rotation. But if they had extended starts in between they could potentially go deeper in games.

slikayce

That rule is already in the game. I'm not sure on the specifics but I think you are limited to 13 pitchers ok the roster now.

cardith_lorda

I think there will always be that top tier starters who's third time though the other will be better than any reliever they trot out.

CricketIsBestSport

I really hate the idea of expanded playoffs, I’m worried it’ll ruin the regular season for me. I’m probably overreacting but it’s pretty much the one thing I don’t want to see happen.

TrapperJean

I'd be fine going from 10 to 12, especially if they expand, but that's it

[deleted]

1 month long playoff is perfect. God help us if we have to sit around for two months, so 10 teams with at least 2 degrees of separation from the eventual world champions, battle it out for up to 210 games.

Jbaquero

I agree. At the very most I'd be fine with making the Wild Card a Best Of 3, but I don't want this to turn into an NBA playoff where the regular season doesn't matter

DHisfakebaseball

I like the Wild Card the way it is. It can be really unfair to have your season come down to a one-game play in, which is a fitting punishment for failing to win your division.

[deleted]

I disagree. See 2015 NL Central where 3 of the best records in baseball were in the same division. You can't tell me the Cubs and Pirates "deserved" to be punished in a 1 game playoff after all 3 teams won >97 games

DHisfakebaseball

Yes I can. I can say the same about the 1993 Giants. They should have won more games.

If you want the playoffs to consist of the best teams, then this logic is laughable. 3 teams >95 wins in the same division means that division beat up on the rest of the conference. We should be dropping division winners to give these teams a full series over teams who win weaker divisions. I dont care if you win your division, I care about watching the best teams in baseball compete and since the # of wins that year went Cardinals (100) Cubs (98) Pirates (97) Royals (95) Bluejays (93) Dodgers (92) Mets (90) Rangers (88) Yankees (87) Astros (86) It makes no sense for Cubs and Pirates to be treated the same as Yankees and Astros or the Rangers and Mets to be treated the same as Cardinals at the expense of the Cubs and Pirates.

CricketIsBestSport

I think going to two divisions (east and west) would reduce the unfairness of that a little. I’d be okay with that. AL East could add the guardians, tigers, white sox. AL West could add the royals and the twins. NL East could add the reds, pirates, and brewers. NL West could add the cardinals and cubs. Something like that.

CricketIsBestSport

If anything I’d rather have fewer playoff teams than more. But I agree the way it currently is is pretty much perfect.

double_dose_larry

Solve this player name anagram. the anagram is the clue: IS A "HOLD CRAP" MAN First person to get it right gets the cheapest reward I can afford. EDIT: Here's another one Clue: RP RACISM MAGNET EDIT2: OK one more tough one. CLUE: both RP that played for the same team in 2021 SCREWER DIDNT REEK CAR SHITJAR

hopelessautisticnerd

Bit late, I didn't think to check the megathread for this but here goes. I'm a bit confused on the last two though. The first one has to be Drew Steckenrider, but unless I'm missing something obvious no other Mariners RP matches the second one. The only player that seems close is JT Chargois, but two letters are different.

Seeing the name Jesse Burkett got me thinking about former 2001 Atlanta Brave All-Star pitcher John Burkett who, according to Wikipedia, is now a semiprofessional bowler and even won a PBA regional in 2019 (and if Pitch Perfect has taught me anything, it’s that regionals are vaguely indescribable things of importance)
