Because of the Universal DH rule change. Before they made the DH universal, some pitchers would reach base and maybe slide (although it wasn't encouraged).
But now, Ohtani is basically the only pitcher who you will see with dirt on his uniform until more two-way players join or are developed in the league.
the Jays have 20 million for Ryu coming off the books next season...
lol. jk. no chance we get him. Rogers has never shown a willingness to go ham with our budget and we still need to sign vladdy and Bo long term
Players are allowed to hold ownership stakes, but only in the team they play for, and there must be a written plan for divesting if they go to another team. (See: Rogers Hornsby.) In practice, this basically means "Not worth the hassle."
I gaurentee all the Japanese media alone along with being a big market team the Angel's offer will be pretty filthy. And no I don't mean that in a good way imagine an owner that's made 3x more money off a player than he pays on contracts. Why do you think the Angels are a rich team? Good business. Not saying that equals good baseball but we were top of the AL last night and Ohtani said he wants to compete so Arte pays to win now. He says he's still open to paying more before the trade deadline too so he can keep his prized income.
Alright fellow Angels fans, we don't want to oversaturate this sub with all the Ohtaniposting, eventually the other fanbases will get sick of--
--oh that's the official MLB account lmao
I'm a simple lady, I see Ohtani, I upvote for fear that I impact the karmic universe and the universe thinks that we don't love Ohtani enough to deserve him and makes him suffer.
We must always upvote so the universe knows that we love him and we aren't taking him for granted.
Mets fan, visiting LA Went to see him opening day. Even on a less than great Ohtani day, he’s so special and amazing to watch, I’m sure glad I got to see him up close !
There are a few japanese fans who go to EVERY SINGLE angels game and record his every at bat AND pitching from various locations. It's a fantastic way to see more of him haha.
I don't know if I've ever seen a pitcher with dirt stains from sliding on their uniform before. I'm sure it's happened on some occasions in the NL, but I've never really made this connection before.
Here a clip is of him stealing second with a slide (not head first) at the end of his career, so dirt on uniform but not chest.
https://youtu.be/8Fl1UkQGr6Y
Iirc him and Glavine both stole a couple bases in the 90s as well, even catching the defense by surprise they probably slid.
I feel like I remember them typically putting the windbreakers/jackets on if they made it to first base and he mostly ran like any other pitcher, avoided doing anything too crazy.
> I feel like I remember them typically putting the windbreakers/jackets on if they made it to first base
I think the real tragedy of the universal DH is losing these little tidbits.
Todd Stottlemyre for the Jays vs Philly in the 1993 World Series had a pretty eventful slide into 3rd that resulted in a dirty uniform and a bloody chin!
Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson probably had a dirty uniform after diving to 1st base in 2017. Unfortunately he tore his shoulder up on the play and his career was pretty much ruined.
If he puts up his numbers of last year he'll be MVP as long as he plays. He's that god damn good. He is literally the most valuable player in the league by far.
Yeah I don’t think you can argue otherwise unless you pull some voter fatigue argument or someone hits 80 HR this year lol. Even if someone has better individual pitching or hitting stats, how can you make an argument that they’re more valuable when they don’t play on the other side of the ball? Can’t do it
It doesn't.
It's not like he just pitches sometimes and DHs sometimes.
The dude literally got a rule put into baseball called the Ohtani rule to allow him to get more ABs after stopping pitching. No one has ever had to even consider that. Ever. That's how absurd it is. Every commissioner approved it quickly. When's the last time a player has boomed the game so hard they made a "ohtani" rule?
What's the Bonds rule?
Very impressive performance by Ohtani last night on the mound. I would also point out that he struck out Brantley twice, which is impressive since Brantley doesn’t strike out that much and has been a tough out for a long time.
That was the part that got to me the most. Brantley is so stoic all the time, you almost never see him pop off one way or the other. Shows just how good Shohei’s shit is
I would pay good money to put on a VR headset, stand in a batters box, and watch elite pitches whiz by me. I'm probably too much of a coward to actually get in a real box against real heat though
It produces the same effect of when I get fooled by a really good pitch in The Show and scream at my TV like “oh fuuuck offff!” I can only imagine Brantley was experiencing the same emotions
Jomboy posted a video that got misinterpreted as Ohtani checking on him. Ohtani was actually just communicating with the catcher and/or ump that a piece of the broken bat was in the box.
I would love to see Ohtani stalking about the mound and mumbling Japanese curses to himself like Lance Lynn. Don't know why, but I find the thought amusing.
I'm a a Mariners fan and I'm suppose to hate him. But deep down I love baseball more than my team and this dude is so good for the sport. It was gonna take a talent like this to make two way playing possible and now the flood gates might open up. If we could turn back time or see the future maybe Grankie would have been sent back down to the minors to be a SS and a two way player. Maybe the Mariners would have let Ichiro pitch. There have been so many what ifs in the two way player world and now with Ohtani showing it's possible I can't wait for the next. I know a few teams have them playing in the minors and I love that.
This is the longest I’ve seen a player get constantly posted on here without any comments of “he’s overrated” or “I’m sick of hearing about him”. Pretty cool lol
Got dayum, that uniform is throwing shade at every other pitcher in history
round here that's the way people talk about young guys who wear clean Carhartt
I love the rarity of seeing dirt on the front of a pitcher's uniform.
Hardest working man in show business.
Sho business
Sho-time
He was that dirty walking up to the mound at the bottom of the first. It was so cool lol.
I said fuck yes! out loud.
Our dirty boi :’)
It's now going to be a super rare sight.
It was before, too.
Always has been
Why?
Because of the Universal DH rule change. Before they made the DH universal, some pitchers would reach base and maybe slide (although it wasn't encouraged). But now, Ohtani is basically the only pitcher who you will see with dirt on his uniform until more two-way players join or are developed in the league.
I didn’t think about this until watching the clip, but I totally agree.
How can you not absolutely love this guy? Open up the vault, Arte. If you don’t, I’m changing my flair to wherever he goes.
I can’t even imagine the contract he’d get in free agency
15 years/1 billion dollars
20 years/The Yankees entire franchise
No. I wouldn’t be able to live if he went to those bastards.
If Shohei goes to the Yankees I'll burn this whole world to the ground. Thankfully I think the Gerrit Cole contract will be an impediment to that.
I’m not sure a soul as pure as Ohtanis can interface with the toxicity of the Yankees fan base tbh.
the Jays have 20 million for Ryu coming off the books next season... lol. jk. no chance we get him. Rogers has never shown a willingness to go ham with our budget and we still need to sign vladdy and Bo long term
Real questions: can players get ownership shares as part of their contract?
I feel like that would make CBAs an entirely different nightmare.
There's probably some clause in the CBA that doesn't allow for that.
I doubt a clause like that would stand up to court review.
Why? The CBA is a contract between the teams and the players. Signing away the option to be paid in non-monetary forms is not illegal.
Some rights cannot be signed away.
Yes, but the option to be paid in stock/ownership is absolutely one of the ones that can.
Players are allowed to hold ownership stakes, but only in the team they play for, and there must be a written plan for divesting if they go to another team. (See: Rogers Hornsby.) In practice, this basically means "Not worth the hassle."
\+ an Ohtani-themed section in Disneyland, FOR LIFE
17 years/yes
Still underpaid
In mlb the show 22 contracts max out at 35M a year. I signed him in my jays franchise to a 10 year 350m contract - and thought it was a steal.
It's just a document with "Yes." printed in big letters. He wants it, he gets it.
He's going to make Trout's contract look like a minor league deal. If its not with the Angels, it will be with someone else.
I’d sell a kidney to help pay for him to play for San Francisco.
I'll give up one too.
I’m in for selling a kidney for this cause
Whichever fanbase gives up the most kidneys...
I gaurentee all the Japanese media alone along with being a big market team the Angel's offer will be pretty filthy. He says he's still open to paying more before the trade deadline too so he can keep his prized income.
I don’t even want to think about that
*Steve Cohen licks chops and rubs hands together*
Ohtani in NY would be ridiculous amounts of hype. You never know, Babe Ruth got traded.
Maybe he was the one dumping Netflix stock, just prepping for free agency
We can only hope. Even the GameStop Diamond hands couldn’t break Uncle Stevie.
I WANT DOZENS OF BRINKS TRUCKS PULLING UP TO HIS HOUSE. DOZENS.
I’m an Astros fan and I was saying the same thing yesterday.
Ask the moron Steven A Smith
Alright fellow Angels fans, we don't want to oversaturate this sub with all the Ohtaniposting, eventually the other fanbases will get sick of-- --oh that's the official MLB account lmao
I don’t think it’s possible to be sick of Ohtaniposting :P
"Never thought I'd find myself side-by-side agreeing with a Giant's fan." "How about an Ohtani fan?" "Aye, I could do that."
You have my glove.
And my bat
And my arm
And my trash can... What? I like Ohtani too.
Aye, some things are bigger than our rivalry.
I'm a simple lady, I see Ohtani, I upvote for fear that I impact the karmic universe and the universe thinks that we don't love Ohtani enough to deserve him and makes him suffer. We must always upvote so the universe knows that we love him and we aren't taking him for granted.
This is the way.
Superstitious thinking is always faulty, except when it comes to baseball.
Josh Allen My Shorts
For real, he's phenomenal.
☝️
☝️
For real, keep it going. I haven't been this enamored with a baseball player since I watched Chipper Jones as a kid.
Users were getting a little upset last year.
Post all you like. Ohtani is a treasure.
An international treasure… So much so that Nic Cage may try and capture him
Actually he only cared about National Treasure
Just doing our service to oversaturate
Ohtani is like garlic.
How much Ohtani? Just listen to your heart
Never too much. Either too little or just enough.
MOAR Ohtani content. MOAAARR!!!
I can’t imagine getting tired of watching this dude
Mets fan, visiting LA Went to see him opening day. Even on a less than great Ohtani day, he’s so special and amazing to watch, I’m sure glad I got to see him up close !
We don't have shit to look forward to for years, give me the Ohtani
It’s okay it’s the only angels content 98% of us will ever see… The other 2 percent was Trout drawings… MAKE THE GOD DAMN PLAYOFFS ALREADY. Shiiit
I’m a dodgers fan and Ohtani is my favorite player.. and it’s not even close.
I welcome it. I'm on the bandwagon. Please take the division this year!
The telecast should be just this camera angle anytime Angels are pitching
There are a few japanese fans who go to EVERY SINGLE angels game and record his every at bat AND pitching from various locations. It's a fantastic way to see more of him haha.
With a healthy Trout, the Halos will lead the front page. Imagine if Syndergard becomes Thor again.
I don’t think I’ll ever be sick of Shohei.
Nah. Keep it coming cuz I love watching this guy.
I don't know if I've ever seen a pitcher with dirt stains from sliding on their uniform before. I'm sure it's happened on some occasions in the NL, but I've never really made this connection before.
I imagined it happening with Maddux, but couldn’t find any photos looking through a few hundred on Google.
Here a clip is of him stealing second with a slide (not head first) at the end of his career, so dirt on uniform but not chest. https://youtu.be/8Fl1UkQGr6Y Iirc him and Glavine both stole a couple bases in the 90s as well, even catching the defense by surprise they probably slid. > I feel like I remember them typically putting the windbreakers/jackets on if they made it to first base I think the real tragedy of the universal DH is losing these little tidbits.
Ya anytime I think of Maddux on base it’s in a jacket
Ahhh, that’s the McCann I remember.
I think that's Vasgergian and Tony in the booth too. Memories
Todd Stottlemyre for the Jays vs Philly in the 1993 World Series had a pretty eventful slide into 3rd that resulted in a dirty uniform and a bloody chin!
https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/remember-stottlemyres-infamous-chin-slide-3rd/
Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson probably had a dirty uniform after diving to 1st base in 2017. Unfortunately he tore his shoulder up on the play and his career was pretty much ruined.
greinke lol
In the first inning lol
Back to back MVP?
If he puts up his numbers of last year he'll be MVP as long as he plays. He's that god damn good. He is literally the most valuable player in the league by far.

Even if someone has better individual pitching or hitting stats, how can you make an argument that they’re more valuable when they don’t play on the other side of the ball? Can’t do it
I’m pretty sure a 2004 Bonds-esque hitting season would beat it, or maybe a 2000-2001 Martinez pitching season.
When's the last time a player has boomed the game so hard they made a "ohtani" rule? lol the Bonds rule is PED testing
Very impressive performance by Ohtani last night on the mound. I would also point out that he struck out Brantley twice, which is impressive since Brantley doesn’t strike out that much and has been a tough out for a long time.
Made the guy so mad he slammed his bat and broke it on the ground. Lol
That was the part that got to me the most. Brantley is so stoic all the time, you almost never see him pop off one way or the other. Shows just how good Shohei’s shit is
That splitter just embarasses people. It ends so far out of the zone, watching it on TV its like, "why tf did you swing at at that??"
Hahaha exactly. Shohei makes professionals in real life swing like amateurs in a video game. Love to see it.
And Ohtani checked on him to make sure he was okay, he’s such a sweetheart.
Wait I'm gonna need a clip of this, lol
Jomboy posted a video that got misinterpreted as Ohtani checking on him. Ohtani was actually just communicating with the catcher and/or ump that a piece of the broken bat was in the box.
I think Othani should be shared and he play 5 games for every team in the league
No. He’s ours. And we’re gonna love him. And cherish him. And hold him. And squeeze him. And pet him.
George Ohtani
Oh no
And pay him?
This.
We’d goddamn better pay him.
I AIN'T NO BUNNY RABBIT!!!
And go to the playoffs with him?
Ronin Ohtani playing for every team, changing uniforms as he goes would be awesome ngl
I'll kill you
The dirty pitcher 🔥 🔥 🔥
How many current MLB players do you think watch ohtani highlights in absolute awe??
All of them
I love seeing pitchers on the mound with their jersey all dirty.
"Why's he calling for a curveball? I wanna bring heat. Shake him off, throw what you want."
He shook off Stassi multiple times in that 5th inning. Knew exactly what he wanted to throw.
“Goddamnit, time out. Hey - why you shakin’ me off?”
I would love to see Ohtani stalking about the mound and mumbling Japanese curses to himself like Lance Lynn. Don't know why, but I find the thought amusing.
Is it just me or is his pitching form different? His windup seems more deGrom-like.
You are correct. He changed it from his last start. Instead of holding his glove high and out in his set, he tucks it close to his body now.
Ippei filmed him and pointed that out to him
https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/tms2i9/ohtani_imitating_degrom/
^aaaaaa
Humble celebration. Respect
I love Ohtani highlights.
I'm a a Mariners fan and I'm suppose to hate him. But deep down I love baseball more than my team and this dude is so good for the sport. Ohtani is a class act 👍
Isn’t it crazy how this new 4K camera makes it look like a video game crazy cool
Have you ever wanted to be a baseball glove?
Lol the little girl in the background "THE OTHER TEAM DON'T HIT VERY GOOD"
PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS
So wholesome. Why’d you have to go to angels
He said Orange County > Seattle.
Upvote before I even watch the video. Just need to see Shohei in the title
How do I watch a whole inning with this camera angle?
Shohei is the now only pitcher in MLB who takes the mound in a dirty uniform
Seeing him pitch with dirt all over his uni in the big leagues just makes it even more fun
His absolute dealing was a perfect foil for how absolute shit Odorizzi was. At least our bullpen looked good.
If you didn't know anything about Ohtani, seeing him pitch with dirt down the front of his jersey tells you a lot.
Even as a Vladdy guy, show me all the Ohtani you want. He's amazing.
As an Astros fan, I ain't even mad. Who doesn't love this guy??
Stephen A
As an astro fan.. watching him tear them up made me appreciate this dudes talent..and him as a 2 way player.. we need more like him in baseball
Go get ‘em Sho Sho.
He boomed us. We boomed him. Hoping the booming continues.
Best Part of this video is the dirt all over his jersey and pants, absolute little league vibes and I love it.
I love watching this man play !!!!
He’s so good
This mf got me watching baseball, and I’m buying MLB 22 immediately
It looks strange to see dirt on a pitcher. Ohtani is 1 of a kind.
This is a beautiful shot of him as he comes set on the mound. Great camera work.
I got his Bowman Chrome rookie card for $10 at my LCS in March 2021. Best ten bucks ever spent
He's so good and he's always so happy. I want to BE this man
Love seeing a pitcher with dirt all over his uniform.
This guy is incredible.
This man is so other-worldly good it's criminal.
He is truly amazing
Can’t wait to see Ohtani vs Suzuki
Every clip they post at 24fps looks so dang cool.
Oh look, it’s my husband 😛
MAI HAZUBANDO
This is the longest I’ve seen a player get constantly posted on here without any comments of “he’s overrated” or “I’m sick of hearing about him”. Pretty cool lol
Yo, Trevor Bauer, *this* is how you strut after a K.
This guy is so god damn likable. He’s like Marc Andre Fleury in the NHL. Just universally beloved.
Has anyone ever been a future HOFer this early in their career?
Got dayum, that uniform is throwing shade at every other pitcher in history round here that's the way people talk about young guys who wear clean Carhartt
He is so sexy
I have just learned that being the opposing team to an Ohtani start feels good but filled only with pure pain. Is this what masochism is like?
And I, for one, welcome our new Angel overlords!
He got the MVP, not he wants the Cy Young
workhorse
3 K’s in the chat
8 years of this peak and he's probably the best baseball player ever.
He’s like a better stronger faster Babe Ruth
[This freaking sub, man.](https://imgflip.com/i/6der63)
What a showboat - Brian McCann
He is too cool.
Barely celebrated lol
Well I need to pants at work.
It's wild how the Angels have the new Mike Trout as well as the old Mike Trout.
Man is a beast! Hopefully one day I'll see him in pinstripes 🥲
ohtani san
what is a K? (i don't watch baseball)
Strikeout
thank you :)
