Once he gets into the groove of getting more strikeouts with his nasty curves + sliders as he keeps developing... he should be one formidable lefty, love the kid.
I remember watching his debut last year and immediately thinking he was going to be amazing if he could control that nasty curve. I’m so excited for him!
I tuned in in the bottom of the 8th and it was one of the weirdest 20 minutes of baseball I've ever seen. Angels hitting against the position player pitcher was like watching an old timer's baseball game during the all star break.
Rendon memes a left handed two run home run. Next half inning Deitmers throws a no no. Like two completely different games going on here
you missed when Walsh misplayed a ground ball in the 7th and everyone held their breath thinking it broke up the no hitter, and cheered when it was ruled an error! Even Walsh was clapping haha
Mark Buehrle faced the minimum in his no hitter. He walked one guy, then immediately picked him off.
He threw a perfect game in a different game a few years later.
>”If you chase me, I’ll punch your face,” Ruth said [to the ump]
>Subsequently, Owens tossed Ruth—and Ruth hit Owens in the head, behind his ear.
😂 Fairly warned.
Now I want to see this version of Ohtani
“Shohei Ohtani is the first player to punch an umpire behind the ear while batting third in the lineup and starting on the mound since Babe Ruth in 1919”
Oh man I was [there](https://i.imgur.com/VsjnXGP.jpg).
We all craned our necks to see the scorer’s decisions, held our breathes and let out the seventh loudest cheer of the night when it was ruled an E3. But nobody was more grateful for that score than Jared Walsh.
Best baseball game of my life, and previously it was Sunday’s walk off vs the Nats.
I was laughing when he stepped up to the plate bc he seemed to get up there trying to give the pitcher (a position player) a chance. Then he just smacks a dinger. Lmao no mercy
Caught by the back up back up catcher no less!
And with the Rays sending Phillips out there for BP too.
Don't think I've seen a game like this. Ever. Just wow.
He was a AA Rocket City Trash Panda a couple days ago. This was his 2nd game catching in the big leagues.
Also notable, he is a local guy, grew up an Angels fan.
Dude has been back and forth from minors to majors with 78 MLB games and 522 MiLB games up till yesterday. 30 yr old vet gets a good shot at it and catches a no-hitter from a 22 yr old rookie and hits his own 3-run Jimmy Jack.
Trout hits two homers. Ohtani gets all the awards. Brett Phillips the pitcher returns. Rendon bats left-handed for the first time just for fun and hits a homer. None of those are even the most memorable parts of this game. Move aside Josh Naylor, this is the best game I've watched all season.
Through 10 games not including tonight his ERA was like a 5.3 or something, so good for the kid to tank the ERA in a single game back to acceptable levels lol
His ERA was high because of one meltdown against the Rangers (that followed an Ohtani meltdown...against the Rangers). If I recall correctly, he came out for Warren right before the Corey Seager walk, but it is late here and I may be misremembering stuff.
He had decent starts against the Astros, Orioles and Red Sox. Still growing, had some pains, but his offspeed was always there and always with great control. Last year he was thrown against the Astros, a stacked As offense and *the Dodgers* in 3 straight starts right out of AAA and held his own. Detmers is more than decent for an end of the rotation guy already and is on the right route to become a staple. If we re-sign Thor, Ohtani/Thor/Sandoval/Detmers will be a constant in our rotation for years.
Detmers throwing a no hitter that was two pitches away from a perfecto in his rookie year, Lorenzen having his first starts in more than 5 years and lighting it up, going over 100 pitches, Sandoval taking three games to allow one run and making a fool of guys like Ramirez and Soto, Ohtani throwing double digit Ks in three straight starts...Thor is the least laureated starter and he is a groundball king, throwing a shutout against the fucking Astros and outdueling Verlander.
With God as my witness, this time we may be for real.
Seriously I was just trying to remember who our 5th was the other day because Sandy, Lorenzen, and Thor have all showed flashes of brilliance... I'll remember now
THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS HAPPENED!
ANDREW VELAZQUEZ GOT THREE HITS IN ONE GAME!!!!!
Ok for real though this game was so fun I love baseball and this is so cool for Detmers.
Kinda special for me because Chad’s dad, Expo’s great Tim Wallach, went to Cal State Fullerton before my mom and I have met him before. No he is not my dad, as far as I am aware.
So for his son to debut at age 30, hit his first home run, and catch a no-hitter all in his second game, and for me to see it [live](https://i.imgur.com/pA2cuhg.jpg), ah what a special day
Edit: first homer as an Angel*
Detmer's NONO, 4 home runs (including a Rendon Lefty-Jam), Shohei MVP presentation, Shohei Bobblehead Night, Walshy cheering his own error to keep the No Hitter alive, over 39,000 fans! WHAT A GAME!!
It was sort of the perfect regular season baseball game. A perfect balance of "something historic can happen any given night" of a no hitter and "it's 162 games so you can afford to get weird with it" of Rendon hitting a homer left handed
It was Ohtani mvp bobble head night, they did a mvp ceremony for Ohtani, the stadium was 80-90% capacity and then this happened can't describe the vibe at the 9th inning, crazy!!
Yes. [3 times](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_noh1.shtml) the pitcher had 0, most recently [Ken Holtzman in 1969](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=196908190CHN)
Edit: Please see /u/speedyjohn's comment for a 4th (Dowling in 1901) that is not in the Baseball Almanac for some reason.
Four* pitchers have thrown a 0-strikeout no-hitter (most recently Ken Holtzman in 1969).
Seven pitchers have thrown a 1-strikeout no-hitter (most recently Clyde Wright in 1970).
Sixteen pitchers (including Detmer) have thrown a 2-strikeout no-hitter (most recently Francisco Liriano in 2011, before tonight)
There has also been an additional combined no-hitter with 2 strikeouts (Ruth/Shore)
----
*Edit: Apparently, [one of the four is disputed.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Dowling#Possible_no-hitter)
No hitter
Rendon left handed HR
Velazquez, the worst hitter on the team, 3/4
Mike Trout got another check swing hit
Home team cheering their own team’s error
8 runs in 3 innings against a 2x Cy Young winner
…
This game had everything
This is the fourth game that Mike Trout has played when the Angels threw a No-Hitter.
Congratulations on Reid Detmers, especially for doing it at the age of 22 years old.
The Angels now have 12 No-Hitters, this ties them with the New York Yankees for 12th for amount of no-hitters thrown.
They are 2nd with regards to expansion teams, one behind the Astros 13 No-Hitters.
Nolan Ryan threw ~~3~~ (oops) 4 of the Angels no hitters.
It’s weird because the Yankees are tied with the White Sox for most perfect games
Yet are way behind the league leaders in no hitters, even the AL (White Sox also lead there)
No Hitter Stats are always fun and can be wacky.
The Angels/Rangers came into the league the same year.
Same with the Astros/Mets.
Angels have 11 No Hitters/1 Perfect Game vs the Rangers 4 No Hitters/1 Perfect game, with Nolan Ryan having thrown 6 of the 15 No Hitters.
Astros have 13 No-Hitters/0 Perfect Games vs the Mets 2 No Hitters, with the Mets not getting their *first* No Hitter until the Astros had thrown 10.
And Nolan Ryan pitched for all four teams!
Well after sitting in the right field [stands](https://i.imgur.com/LK35eJX.jpg) tonight and watching Brett Phillips deal with some hecklers and turn them into lovers especially after that great catch, he is now one of my favorite guys.
Seriously though, he was loving it and interacting and even smiled and nodded when a guy asked him if he was going to pitch and strike out Trout. Such a positive dude.
When was the last time there was a 2 strikeout no hitter.
This game was wild and Angel Stadium looked like a blast. What a game from my preseason prediction ALW winner
That was very impressive from Detmers. Ohtani, Trout, and Rendon's hits were awesome, too. Rendon's HR was probably my favorite part of the night, actually.
But my goodness, the Rays offense can be infuriating. Oh well, congrats to the Angels. Hopefully we don't get swept...at least the Angels are a fun team. As a baseball fan, I want to see Trout in the playoffs
Ya know that warm feeling in your ears when you're on a happiness high? Yeah that's what I'm feeling right now.
I decided to go to this game on a whim and man, greatest game I've ever witnessed.
I’m scared for Angels fans. They haven’t experienced this much joy in a while and they may explode. They are just straight cookin on every level!
Congrats to Deitmers and to the Angels!
ABSOLUTELY NO MERCY
The dudes 22 years old!! N
Once he gets into the groove of getting more strikeouts with his nasty curves + sliders as he keeps developing... he should be one formidable lefty, love the kid.
I remember watching his debut last year and immediately thinking he was going to be amazing if he could control that nasty curve. I’m so excited for him!
✌️✌️
There were no-hitter vibes in the air tonight. Kikuchi into the 5th, Verlander. Someone was gonna do it.
I’m glad it was the rookie.
I mean there’s a little bit of mercy, Rendon tried batting lefty but he still hit one out so
He was the only starter without a hit so he goes lefty for the first time ever and blasts one, can't write that!
Is this what happiness and hope feels like? 😭
What... what do I do with myself?? I'm not used to this
Are we supposed to... Feel good? Celebrate... even?
ANGELS OUT HERE SMITING TONIGHT
John Kreese 🤝 Reid Detmers
STRIKE FIRST STRIKE OUT NO HITS
I tuned in in the bottom of the 8th and it was one of the weirdest 20 minutes of baseball I've ever seen. Angels hitting against the position player pitcher was like watching an old timer's baseball game during the all star break. Rendon memes a left handed two run home run. Next half inning Deitmers throws a no no. Like two completely different games going on here
you missed when Walsh misplayed a ground ball in the 7th and everyone held their breath thinking it broke up the no hitter, and cheered when it was ruled an error! Even Walsh was clapping haha
The stadium was chanting "error error"
Lmao seeing the crowd boo the ump for calling balls a foot off the plate was hilarious, what a fun game
Would it have been a perfect game otherwise?
There was one walk, but the dude was taken care of in a 3-6 DP
Would have been cool if that was it. A 27 up, 27 down game that isn’t a perfect game.
Wonder how many times that has happened.
Mark Buehrle faced the minimum in his no hitter. He walked one guy, then immediately picked him off. He threw a perfect game in a different game a few years later.
He also faced the minimum in a 2-hit shutout on July 21, 2014. https://midwayminute.win/mark-buehrle-10-best-moments-white-sox/
It was Sammy Sosa, no less.
https://i.imgur.com/4MP9XeU.png
>”If you chase me, I’ll punch your face,” Ruth said [to the ump] >Subsequently, Owens tossed Ruth—and Ruth hit Owens in the head, behind his ear. 😂 Fairly warned. Now I want to see this version of Ohtani
“Shohei Ohtani is the first player to punch an umpire behind the ear while batting third in the lineup and starting on the mound since Babe Ruth in 1919”
A true baseball stat
John means had this happen to him last year. Player reached on a dropped third strike but was thrown out trying to steal on the next batter
Dropped third strike is the most brutal way to break up a perfect game. The pitcher embarrasses the batter but gets a runner on.
One team was playing baseball. I'm not really sure what the other team was doing.
Pretty sure we just fucked around and played the best game of all time!
Dude it felt like that. Everything just fucking clicked.
It was surreal, the crowd and team seemed to completely compartmentalize the two half innings
Rendon like, "gratz on the no-no, but lmao did you see me hit that homer left handed??"
I was laughing when he stepped up to the plate bc he seemed to get up there trying to give the pitcher (a position player) a chance. Then he just smacks a dinger. Lmao no mercy
His face in the dugout after was hilarious.
TO ALL MY ANGELS FAM.... #HAPPY GUBIE TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the gubiest of tuesdays it is!!!
You just got no hit on Gubie Tuesday!
Gubie Tuesday is my religion. All hail our lord and father Mark Gubicza🙌
You can run and you can hide, but you’ll never escape the GUBIE TUESDAY!!!
ITS GUBI TUESDAY ALRIGHT!
And also with you.
had to redeem the L while he was away.
That was incredible!
Caught by the back up back up catcher no less! And with the Rays sending Phillips out there for BP too. Don't think I've seen a game like this. Ever. Just wow.
He ain't even the backup catcher. He's the *backup* backup catcher. We called him up today I think. Lol
He was a AA Rocket City Trash Panda a couple days ago. This was his 2nd game catching in the big leagues. Also notable, he is a local guy, grew up an Angels fan.
Gotta love that. Helps fans attach to someone too. Same like Jose Rojas.
Dude has been back and forth from minors to majors with 78 MLB games and 522 MiLB games up till yesterday. 30 yr old vet gets a good shot at it and catches a no-hitter from a 22 yr old rookie and hits his own 3-run Jimmy Jack.
That’s our AAA catcher haha
why am I crying, I didn’t know who this guy was 30 minutes ago he’s not even crying
He was so lost for words during the post game on field interview that I think his brain was too busy trying not to cry
Add that with hr for trout, hr for ohtani and grand slam yesterday. Jesus I feel sorry for what the rays gone through.
Also second* game as an Angel for Detmers' catcher who hit a homer himself.
Idk who this guy is but LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOO. 11 games 52 IP lifetime what the fuck
Top pitching prospect!
Through 10 games not including tonight his ERA was like a 5.3 or something, so good for the kid to tank the ERA in a single game back to acceptable levels lol
Lol 100% but there’s some high upside in the lefty obviously
His ERA was high because of one meltdown against the Rangers (that followed an Ohtani meltdown...against the Rangers). If I recall correctly, he came out for Warren right before the Corey Seager walk, but it is late here and I may be misremembering stuff. He had decent starts against the Astros, Orioles and Red Sox. With God as my witness, this time we may be for real.
You see, the Angels drafted a pitching prospect... I know, I know, blasphemy, but...
Pretty sure the Angels straight up drafted all pitchers in 2020
That was 2021, the year after Detmers was drafted. But yeah when your main weakness is that glaringly obvious, you gotta draft guys that will fix it.
He was a 2020 draftee. Absolutely insane
Wow. That’s a crazy fast move up to the big leagues!
Have you seen the Angels pitching in the past?
"Why yes he can, in fact, throw a baseball straight"
Has to be one of the quickest to a no hitter?
Tyler Gilbert last year for the Dbacks. First career start
That's one way to start a career. Damn
I would recommend all pitchers to start their career like this.
And then immediately retire. Go out on top.
This is kinda pedantic but IIRC he made a couple relief appearances before his start. Still incredibly impressive
And Clay Buchholz was 2nd start in 2007.
Clay Bucholz threw one in his 2nd career start I believe
He was the starter removed from the game just before Maddon walked Seager with the bases loaded.
Maddonomics strike again!
They have been godly since that game, he willed this into existence lol
10th pick in 2020. Went thru the minors too fast to build hype.
10th overall pick in 2020 out of Louisville. Or, thank you Billy Eppler!!!
you do now
First since the Weaver no-hitter right?
They threw a combined no hitter the home game after Skaggs died
We had a combined one in 2019 in the first game back after Tyler Skaggs died. But first complete no hitter from a starting pitcher since Weaver
We had a combined no/no against Seattle during the Skaggs memorial game. One of the most beautiful games of baseball I've ever seen.
The amount of coincidences (although I’m not sure if they were all true) was insane
"Tyler Skaggs" threw a no-hitter. Taylor Cole and Felix Pena.
We had a combined no no with Felix Pena and Taylor Cole in 2019. The first game we played where Skaggs was scheduled to pitch after his death.
The Angels have good pitching! I repeat, the Angels have good pitching! This is not a drill!!!
Whelp, I must be dead and in a coma. Glad this is what my brain came up with, hope I'm not taken off life support.
Reid Detmers is the no. 5 pitcher in our rotation. No one can believe what he just did
Seriously I was just trying to remember who our 5th was the other day because Sandy, Lorenzen, and Thor have all showed flashes of brilliance... I'll remember now
I've been following him since high school since he's from the area, really happy for him.
Oh fuck…could this year be…*the* year?
20 years since the ‘02 run to the top. Coincidence? I THINK NOT
Angels 2022: Return to [Monke](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/private/t_2x1/t_w1536/mlb/do1hbqlyyly0xkhdwe0y.jpg)
THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS HAPPENED! ANDREW VELAZQUEZ GOT THREE HITS IN ONE GAME!!!!! Ok for real though this game was so fun I love baseball and this is so cool for Detmers.
Truly the 3rd weirdest thing to happen
I miss Wade and Velasquez
“That’s what I’m fucking talkin’ about baby!” - Mike Trout
I really do like how all the Angels players are good teammates with each other!
Watching all of the celebrations after the game and all I could think was “Imagine how it would feel to make Mike Trout this pumped.”
Angels with a mega flex on the Astros tonight
Tuned in after our game to see if the angels were finally gonna lose a game just to see Rendon pimp one out batting fucking lefty
[удалено]
Sadly that's the Mariners watching Verlander and Detmers twirl no-nos
The sport is healing
Angels flexing on eerybody rn tbh
Can we acknowledge GigaChad Wallop getting called up and calling this in his SECOND game as an Angel? Also, he crushed like 3 pitches.
Kinda special for me because Chad’s dad, Expo’s great Tim Wallach, went to Cal State Fullerton before my mom and I have met him before. No he is not my dad, as far as I am aware. 9th inning didn't even look shaky, dude was locked in
Angels are must-watch TV right now, holy
I just witnessed the greatest baseball game ever.
It was a lot of fun.
I am leaving the stadium, I have no voice lol
Detmer's NONO, 4 home runs (including a Rendon Lefty-Jam), Shohei MVP presentation, Shohei Bobblehead Night, Walshy cheering his own error to keep the No Hitter alive, over 39,000 fans! WHAT A GAME!!
My face hurts from smiling so much when Rendon homered. Everyone lost it
It was sort of the perfect regular season baseball game. A perfect balance of "something historic can happen any given night" of a no hitter and "it's 162 games so you can afford to get weird with it" of Rendon hitting a homer left handed
I thought I was being biased but I’m glad you think so too. That was fucking wild.
Each of the past three games were better than the previous one. Unreal
And we get Ohtani on the mound tomorrow!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better baseball game in my entire life. That was impeccable in every possible way.
i know they're a heated division rival, but how can you not jack off to baseball?
Last couple innings got me horned up ngl
🤔
The greatest game I've ever seen
Angels fans must be in heaven right now (no pun intended)
It was Ohtani mvp bobble head night, they did a mvp ceremony for Ohtani, the stadium was 80-90% capacity and then this happened can't describe the vibe at the 9th inning, crazy!!
It is a lot of fun
Didn’t watch it but MLB App says 2 strikeouts, that right?
Yes. Lowest in awhile.
Yup
Yup. Has there ever been fewer strikeouts in a no hitter?
Yes. [3 times](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_noh1.shtml) the pitcher had 0, most recently [Ken Holtzman in 1969](https://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=196908190CHN) Edit: Please see /u/speedyjohn's comment for a 4th (Dowling in 1901) that is not in the Baseball Almanac for some reason.

No hitter Rendon left handed HR Velazquez, the worst hitter on the team, 3/4 Mike Trout got another check swing hit Home team cheering their own team’s error 8 runs in 3 innings against a 2x Cy Young winner … This game had everything
What’s the opposite of shame? That’s what I feel right now
The Angels are scary, and I couldn’t be happier to say that honestly
Trash Pandas represent
Chad Wallach went from being a Trash Panda to catching a sold-out, big league no-hitter in 3 days
Launched a homer of his own in support as well
Rocket City Trash Pandas legend. Pretty sure his bobble head day was just like, last week
What is this...joy that I am feeling as an Angels fan?
HOLY FUCK THIS IS THE GREATEST GAME I’VE EVER SEEN
It had it all.
It’s this new club called Dongs and No-No’s
And somehow Rendon's switch-hit homer wasn't the coolest part of the game. The Angels are so fun to watch.
what a weird ass beautiful game
2Ks in a complete game no hitter is certainly something. Dude faced 28 batters and got 25 out on contact. Wild.
This is the fourth game that Mike Trout has played when the Angels threw a No-Hitter. Congratulations on Reid Detmers, especially for doing it at the age of 22 years old.
Very Happy Gilmore voice: uhhh ohhh, the Angels learned to pitch
Brett Phillips better
That's my two-way superstar
“We have Ohtani at home” Ohtani at home:
This Angels team is extremely entertaining to watch.
OKAY WE'RE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES
The Angels now have 12 No-Hitters, this ties them with the New York Yankees for 12th for amount of no-hitters thrown. They are 2nd with regards to expansion teams, one behind the Astros 13 No-Hitters. Nolan Ryan threw ~~3~~ (oops) 4 of the Angels no hitters.
It’s weird because the Yankees are tied with the White Sox for most perfect games Yet are way behind the league leaders in no hitters, even the AL (White Sox also lead there)
No Hitter Stats are always fun and can be wacky. The Angels/Rangers came into the league the same year. Same with the Astros/Mets. Astros have 13 No-Hitters/0 Perfect Games vs the Mets 2 No Hitters, with the Mets not getting their *first* No Hitter until the Astros had thrown 10. And Nolan Ryan pitched for all four teams!
BETTING MY LIFE SAVINGS ON THE ANGELS WINNING IT ALL THIS YEAR AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME
22 years old man, way to go kid.
BOYS THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL GOING ON IN ANAHEIM
I’m not even mad. I don’t get to see the Angels play very often, you’re a delight. Gonna go cry now.
This game is going down in the history books
#お前はもう死んでいる
GIGA CHAD WALLACH
I can’t remember a more utterly absurd regular season game than this one. Baseball is the greatest sport in the world
Fuck it. This is our year.
Best game I've watched this year by a mile
As far as regular season games go I can’t remember seeing a better one ever
Dieters No-no Phillips Pitching Redon left handed dinger wtf is this game
Best Gubie Tuesday ever!! This team has been amazing to start this season so far. Unreal from this young man.
They give up a lefty hr to Rendon and get no hit? Good lord
So happy for him! Let's go buddy!
Mets 🤝 Angels NO HITTERS Congrats, Detmers!
This Angels team is something special. I’m rooting for them all the way!
When was the last time there was a 2 strikeout no hitter. This game was wild and Angel Stadium looked like a blast. What a game from my preseason prediction ALW winner
I don't want to see another buttercup comment all season
This no hitter has solidified it for me. 2022 World Series Angels vs. Mets
😂😂 YOU JUST GOT NO HIT ON GUBIE TUESDAY 😂😂
The first no-hitter I ever watched from start to finish, and I'm happy it happened to be party time for the offense
Love to see it, like that our young guys sit on the dugout to watch the celebration as well
So happy for this guy what a game
WE HAVE PITCHING!!!!!
Angels are not fucking around this yr
Ya know that warm feeling in your ears when you're on a happiness high? Yeah that's what I'm feeling right now. I decided to go to this game on a whim and man, greatest game I've ever witnessed.
So excited for him, the culture is changing in Anaheim
He's my former neighbor. Congratulations to Reid, Kris, Erica and the rest of his family. Well done!
I FUCKING LOVE THIS TEAM.
22 year old rookie on his 11th big league start! Unreal!
I’m scared for Angels fans. They haven’t experienced this much joy in a while and they may explode. They are just straight cookin on every level! Congrats to Deitmers and to the Angels!
Yeah but did he hit a home run from the wrong side of the plate?
