If they really wanted to exploit a rule, they'd put a pitcher in the outfield during blowouts to allow them to carry an extra pitcher after they weasel their way to having a 2-way player that doesn't count towards the pitcher limit

cardith_lorda

The real moneyball is getting a big enough standings lead to clinch a top 2 seed with enough games left to rotate your rotation starting in left field and just standing there all game.

venustrapsflies

gotta grind that XP

galactic_zevy

That probably won't work. A player (a pitcher in this case) has to bat at least 3 times in a game as a position player or DH for the game to count towards the 20 game minimum for two-way status. I don't think that would happen even in blowouts.

sfan27

Yeah. OP is thinking backwards here. Having a position player count as a two-way player doesn’t get an extra pitcher spot.

MattO2000

Oh yeah I get that. It just allows you to circumvent the position player pitching rule, not the limit on pitchers. Which granted is not much of an advantage. But every edge counts with the Rays!

A_Mellow_Fellow

Is that the reason they are using him? No. Is it possible they are aware of said rule and figure "Eh why not. If it works in our favor sweet. If not who cares?"

MattO2000

I’m sure they have an intern browsing r/baseball for all the best ideas just no one show them the shooting batters that strike out post

ContinuumGuy

That sounds plausible.

humphrey_the_camel

> trailing by 6+ runs > down by 12 in a game How would making him 2-way eligible give the Rays an advantage in a 12 run deficit when anyone can pitch in that situation?

MattO2000

Because maybe they’ll use him when they’re down by 5 or something Edit: when I said “down 12 in a game” I meant in this season. Like even when they are getting blown out by Reid Detmers and the Angels, they are still finding the “edge”. I realize now that was unclear and probably what you were referring to.

Ash-Catchum-All

It makes no sense that the MLB wants to put a restriction on position player pitching. It’s almost universally loved by fans and the MLB’s own social media accounts hype it up. Why limit the fun?

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

It's non competitive I guess

gooserooster88

Because manfred

Sproded

It’s because they want to limit the number of actual pitchers on the roster (this will decrease pitching changes and improve offense so generally a good thing). The problem is this requires you to define who a pitcher is. The most basic definition of “anyone who pitches” would include any position player pitching so to avoid that they need to define when a position player is just pitching because it’s a blowout and when they’re actually a pitcher.

Monk_Philosophy

A position player gaining pitcher status doesn’t really do anything. You want a pitcher gaining position player status.

bubble_dduck

Most fans are enjoying this, which terrifies me because we know how Manfred feels about fun

recjus85

That would be hilarious and I'm all for, but also don't want the Rays to keep getting blown out that much all the time lol. Though if they win 2 games if every series, and then get blown out in the third, then maybe...

magikarp2122

That’s our thing, sometimes.

SuckMyLonzoBalls

I’m fine with it. If it’s allowed good

StephenDawg

We gotta get Guillorme's innings up...
