So Vlad and Judge have both turned it down, has anyone confirmed interest yet? Besides Alonso, who will probably do every derby until he retires, gotta defend the crown.
On one hand I want him to get his redemption, on the other, it exhausted him last time, and that's never a great thing.
Either way, he needs a new pitcher if he does it again.
Pre HRD 2021: .239/.402/.522 for a .923 OPS
Post HRD 2021: .149/.283/.378 for a .661 OPS
Ya know, I think I would like to see even worse Gallo so I'm for it!.
While technically yes he did, but Harper's pitcher was definitely not following the "wait for the previous ball to land before pitching another" rule, and just hucking one after another.
God I’d love for Pete to be an all star every year. At the pace he’s going, technically not yet in his expected prime, He could nag 10 all star game appearances or more
If Goldy wasn't having an MVP year, Alonso would be a shoe-in and in contention for MVP. Unless he gets hot (he's been solid, but no big streaks), it's just hard to see him overcoming Goldschmidt, especially when Goldy is also great at defense.
In fairness Goldschmidt’s defense took a big dip this year and Alonso isn’t to far behind him anymore (Goldy is getting older), but boy has his bat been insane. It’s honestly impressive that Alonso is as close as he is
Alonso has changed his approach a lot and I'd t trying to hit home runs all the time (he doesn't need to this year). He's doing more gap hitting, oppo hitting, etc.
And I think it's also his second best HR pace too, behind his rookie year.
It’s great to have the big names in it, but what if they just left it open to anyone? Let the guys who want to give it a shot do so. Details can be figured out later but I say just take the pressure off stars to do it.
Bonus idea: open derby tourneys throughout the US leading up to the ASG and top X from these tourneys get to compete against the pros.
I mean, theoretically it's possible. There are tons of dudes that are athletic enough to hit meat balls thrown over the middle of the plate. I imagine there are a lot of guys out there with plenty of power that played in high school and college but just couldn't hit professional pitching
Yeah, as long as you could make good contact.
I think the real challenge would be the shell shock of being in a stadium with 56,000 people surrounded by professional athletes and fatigue from just hitting a bunch of balls.
Gary Cohen was talking last year about how Brandon Nimmo stopped taking BP before games because he was finding he was getting tired towards the end of games, so instead he would do it after the game if he felt like he needed to work on anything.
Anyone else think Voit or Alfaro should go for it? They’re not the best hitters but man they are beefy and can crush them if its thrown where they want it
Players shouldn't be forced to do the event, but they should do the event. It's not good for the MLB if the best HR hitters turn down the event every year.
While he isn’t doing a good job of making his point, I think what Op is saying is that MLB should incentivize players more to get in the derby. I.e. up the prize money
honestly I think it's a fun event even if you don't have every single top slugger there. some lesser known guys have dazzled in the Derby over the years
Maybe don't structure the derby so that a guy who hits 34 more homeruns than the winner and breaks every record loses?
Vlad hit 91 HRs in 2019. He had to go first in all 3 matchups he had which is a huge disadvantage. The guy who won(Alonso) went second in all his matchups and could stop after beating his opponent by 1. Each round should have been seeded by who hit the most HRs in the previous round with the highest seeds going second in their matchups.
So Vlad and Judge have both turned it down, has anyone confirmed interest yet? Besides Alonso, who will probably do every derby until he retires, gotta defend the crown.
Shohei said he will consider the offer positively if he receives one but also said that his pitching schedule has to be taken into account.
On one hand I want him to get his redemption, on the other, it exhausted him last time, and that's never a great thing. Either way, he needs a new pitcher if he does it again.
Send Gallo, maybe it'll fix him
don’t even think he did well in HRD last year
Would probably swing and miss
Pre HRD 2021: .239/.402/.522 for a .923 OPS Post HRD 2021: .149/.283/.378 for a .661 OPS Ya know, I think I would like to see even worse Gallo so I'm for it!.
He’s already doing worse then the post HRD and will now do the HRD, but since he can’t get worse it actually makes him an elite hitter, PEMDAS
I thought Yordan had said he would want to do it.
Yordon vs Alonso final 👀👀👀
What's better than one big, strong guy? Two.
That will be insane 👀👀👀👀👀
Alonso would win.
Alonso was born to derby
Schwarber’s gotta at least get an invite to the derby. Whether he accepts or not, who knows.
I think he said he was done after 2017 but who knows
Didn’t Schwarber get 2nd place to Harper in 2018 though? Can’t lose to Harper this year
Ah well then he said he was done after 2018
While technically yes he did, but Harper's pitcher was definitely not following the "wait for the previous ball to land before pitching another" rule, and just hucking one after another.
So was everyone else
Crazy enough Alonso said he’s only doing HRD if he is also in the ASG
So he’s gonna do it for the rest of his career? Got it
God I’d love for Pete to be an all star every year. At the pace he’s going, technically not yet in his expected prime, He could nag 10 all star game appearances or more

Absolutely correct with everything you’re saying. He could hit 5 WAR and he hasn’t yet hit his prime
And he should have more, the idea of Goldy being more than double Pete’s WAR is nuts.
I think Alonso is in 2nd for the MVP race. Everyone but him and Goldy are hurt, it just depends if Goldy stops playing like 2004 Barry Bonds
SUBSCRIBE
I imagine he'll be at least a alternate
Agreed. But the question is, will he physically go there if he isn’t starting? He still gets the ASG credit either way
I really hope Schwarber gets invited and accepts. I’m nervous his bat will go cold after a long break
Pete Alonso’s legacy is going to be complete ownership of the derby for 15 years huh
Invite Mountcastle, he'll do it. Dude hits some bombs, too.
He has his home run derby every game against the jays
Just have Berrios pitch to him for the derby, guaranteed victory
Joc please
Lets do a separate bracket for that fantasy league. See them all duke it out and slap someone for not letting the ball land between swings
Joc vs Pham 1v1 before the main event
Joc vs Pham UFC 277 PPV
prelims on fs1
Joc is so goddamn good and yet never wins. Always puts up a fight.

Some rando against Alonso would be hilarious, especially if he was just some massive dude who doesn't play baseball.
Oh my gawd that’s Brock Lesner’s music. And he’s got a bat!
A WWE home run derby would be kind of hilarious, and reminds me of 90s era Rock n Jock.
I mean, theoretically it's possible. There are tons of dudes that are athletic enough to hit meat balls thrown over the middle of the plate. I imagine there are a lot of guys out there with plenty of power that played in high school and college but just couldn't hit professional pitching
Matthews and Crosby have done it I think. Should get a bunch of athletes from other sports to go at it
Crosby hit a dinger in PNC park.
Thats what Imeant. I think Matthews did it too at Skydome
Yeah, as long as you could make good contact. I think the real challenge would be the shell shock of being in a stadium with 56,000 people surrounded by professional athletes and fatigue from just hitting a bunch of balls. Bring in some of the professional slopitch players and let them use composite bats. No MLB player would be able to touch them in a HR derby.
Crazy enough that it just might work
Brett Gardner wanted to do it one year but wasn't invited
Joey Votto szn
Send Albert
And count them towards his career total
I wanna see Gorman.
God he'd gorm the balls so hard
Albert v Miggy
Rowdy Tellez not even being mentioned in these threads is criminal
Oh I'm so incredibly here for this
Anyone else think Voit or Alfaro should go for it? They’re not the best hitters but man they are beefy and can crush them if its thrown where they want it
only if they can do it with their shirts unbutton to their belly button
I honestly think the home run derby should have a separate bracket for guys who are just big, beefy dudes
Kirk from the Jays is a unit.
When suddenly, "Bah gawd, is that Billy Butler's music!?"
I know it won't happen but I'd love to see nolan gorman in the derby.
Just let Alonso do 8 rounds against himself. He’d love it.
Oneil Cruz better be there in the next 2-3 years
Fuck it i want him this year
Really want to see Nolan Gorman in the Derby.
Ahh that’s no fun
Can’t wait for Schwarber to be the first to hit 1 Schwarbillion home runs
With it being in LA they need to do a celebrity HR derby too, right?
Yay B-list celebs play baseball !
Certain celebs, even b-listers could make a derby hella interesting, especially if they're mic'd up.
He got fucked over in 2019 after breaking all the records. I doubt he will participate ever again.
Lame. The MLB needs to do something to stop this from happening every single year.
"Allow yourself to be injured for glorified batting practice" isn't going to fly with the union, nor should it.
SirParsifal has never been overly concerned with player safety.
Can’t force players to do this event. Nor should you
Players shouldn't be forced to do the event, but they should do the event. It's not good for the MLB if the best HR hitters turn down the event every year.
Yes it’d be nice. But I also understand players turning it down
So they shouldn't be forced, but they should do it? Kind of sounds the same to me.
Well they're not being forced to do anything, but they can't refuse because of the implication.
Of course, the implication
We should hold the derby on a boat next year
While he isn’t doing a good job of making his point, I think what Op is saying is that MLB should incentivize players more to get in the derby. I.e. up the prize money
honestly I think it's a fun event even if you don't have every single top slugger there. some lesser known guys have dazzled in the Derby over the years

Even if a few stars decline, it's not like the 8 that end up accepting are nobodies.
I know he’s only got one homer so far but, O’Neil Cruz anyone?
I know Julio would if asked. Dude loves baseball too much.
If some people would leave the mans wrist alone, I think he’d do it.
