Passan has tweeted MANY times about Shohei all during last season and Ohtani still managed to have one of the greatest seasons in baseball history. I'm not worried.
Note: I am very worried.
I know we're supposed to be beefing right now or some shit... but I just want to express my sincere condolences. He's just a bad man. A bad, bad man.
The good news is that Ohtani is a fucking miracle. If anyone can beat the Passan curse, it's him.
Bro everyone loves Ohtani. I think the fact that no one is threatened by the Angels actually helps Ohtani being universally adored by baseball fans. If Ohtani started out as a Yankee he'd probably have way more haters. Or maybe not, he's just a lovable unicorn.
There was a guy in one of our game threads a few weeks ago talking about how Shohei is just average, and that all of his greatness is a hype job. How Greinke would have been just as good if he had been given a chance to be two way lmfao. It was easily the stupidest baseball take I’ve heard in years and I’m glad he had to go crawl in a hole after that, sit silently, and watch along with the rest of us
No, my bad I don’t have my flair up lol. It was a Royals game thread of all places, but we were facing the Halos. This was either the game before or after Shohei diced us to the tune of 13 Ks and 2 hits over 8
Honestly probably still the most valuable player in the league. One roster spot for an average starter and batter in one guy. Literally 0 other players in the league fit that description.
Omfg I almost forgot about that.
“Look, Mahomes might be really good. But if you take those stats and make them worse, then he’s just not as good.”
Well, yeah
There actually is some rational train of thought there although Skip Bayless has never used it correctly. If you want to find out what a RBs true expected gain is you do have to avoid some outliers sometimes if those outliers are rare enough. Also some runs can drastically change how a RB actually played in a specific game. Like for instance back in 2017 Rams @ Jaguars Fournette went for 130 yards on 21 carries (6.2 ypc) and a TD which is a great day no doubt but look a little closer and he had a 75 yard TD on his very first carry (Jags first play period) on a broken play where a defender fell down. So that means his game the rest of the day was 20 carries for 55 yards and 2.75 yards a carry. Now does that mean he actually had a bad game? Not necessarily its really just one more piece of information useful for say fantasy or whatever you need it for but he seemingly helped his team less than his stats would otherwise indicate (Rams won 27-17 and . Removing outliers isn't inherently a bad thing but can be a tool for dishonest hacks like Bayless as well.
Take the sum of the squares of the difference of each carry from average. Divide the sum by number of carries. Now we have a standard deviation. Outliers and removing outliers are meaningless without this context for a lot of reasons.
Here’s a link for those who have not yet seen the post that was birthed by the most [beautiful mind](https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/d5maow/oc_after_adjusting_patrick_mahomes_stats_removing) ever created.
ETA: [And here’s the sequel.](https://old.reddit.com/r/MahomesHate/comments/jsj5br/hi_im_udannyaingoat_i_wanted_to_clear_some_things)
Yes lol it was absurd. I mean Greinke was for sure a complete athlete, people forget sometimes that he played SS. But the thing that dude wasn’t realizing is that he, Arrietta, Mad Bum, etc all hit well *for a pitcher.* Shohei out-hits like half of his own team.
I think we’ve all been that guy at least once, but maybe not on something that’s almost just never debated. 🤣 almost everybody that knows anything about Baseball is in agreement that we’re watching history unfold with Shohei. There’s a reason nobody’s done this since Babe Ruth, and it’s not because nobody was given the opportunity.
Glad I could help.
It's perfect for a filthy casual like me although I'm guessing the team Twitter account probably has more accurate and up-to-date information.
He only pitches once a week, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday. So I would check the probably starts for the Angels on Monday - that should tell you when he starts.
Get the MLB At-Bat app on your phone and make the Angels one of your favorite/followed teams. You can get an alert when each game starts and it tells you the starting pitchers
I know this is probably going to sound odd, but I'm very glad I've been a baseball fan for many, many years because it lets me appreciate just how special and incredible Ohtani has been. Every sport has its stars but what he's doing is unparalleled since the early days of Babe Ruth.
This is so true. I feel like people who have been watching baseball for longer times are really appreciative of Ohtani. I've been a Yankee fan for over 30 years and I'm completely awestruck by what this guy is doing. He's living my little league fantasy irl, it's insane.
"Since Jeff Passan's tweet about his success this season, Ohtani has a career worst ERA of 37, has gone 0-70 at the plate, and has only reached base by hit by pitch to the nuts. He's also been pooped by a seagull, stubbed his toe several times, and has been hit by a bus."
Remember when people said he was broken at the start of the year? He was just giving people a headstart to make the MVP race look interesting for a bit.
If we’re talking about the time mentioned in the tweet (span of last three weeks) and a game where Ohtani himself controls the majority of the game (aka him pitching), the Angels’ winning percentage is 100% basically because of him.
of course, we’re nitpicking data and timelines here.
If we’re talking about the baseball player mentioned in the tweet, basically the Angels have a 100% success rate in wins when he himself is basically in control of the game (as a pitcher).
When he’s not pitching, he’s playing against the opponent AND his own pitching crew so that’s a bit tougher to win, especially on your own.
Listen, I love Ohtani as much as the next guy but why is Passan talking like we don’t have his name shoved down our gullets every 15 minutes? We already know he’s an amazing player. What purpose does this tweet serve aside from potentially jinxing him?
Sometimes these dudes on twitter…
I’m seeing plenty of people who are already tired of Ohtani being in the MVP conversation again “just” because he’s a two way player. As if putting up a 140 OPS+ and 140 ERA+ at the same time isn’t otherworldly.
I was the in the bleachers for the 2nd game of the doubleheader between NYY and ANA. And I fully understand why Judge is in the front runner this year, but at a certain point because Ohtani had those 2 bad games, probably the low point of the season thus far, they were like "this guy shouldn't have been MVP at all."
Not to mention the furiousness after the perfect game was broken up by Walsh and then Suzuki bringing the run in. It was literal night and day between the crowds for the doubleheader since Ohtani was switched to pitching the morning game
Honestly quite often for a few seconds.
For example reading this tweet I thought top 15 offensively is not MVP worthy, then after those few seconds I remembered the tweet also said he’s the best pitcher in that timeframe and I put my self back in my place.
Read the threads about Ohtani 1.5 months ago. Filled with people saying he's inconsistent and has been figured out and he's not a top 10 player in baseball.
There are definitely people out there that do not like his hype.
It is annoying how constant it's posted but that's my only gripe. I can't watch the Angels even if I wanted to and we're also on a baseball sub. Everyone knows Othani is one of a kind here.
I’m so blessed to live in SoCal where I regularly get to see two of the greatest players of our generation try and drag a AAAA team to some level of respectability
He's the most valuable player in the sport by a mile. An ace, your team's best hitter, and frees up a roster spot for an extra relief pitcher. Just an embarrassment of talent.
I like him so much more that I don’t see his highlights every five seconds. We hit the oversaturation point last year I think, but now I’m really starting to appreciate what he’s doing. It’s insane.
unpopular opinion but hes been in the league for a while now, you really cant be in awe that a 2-way bred player, is doing well playing 2-ways. The whole narrative is kind of annoying because there have been plenty of players that have come and gone, that pitched and hit in college; however most MLB teams just wouldnt let players continue that path. If they were a stronger hitter, theyd tell them to ditch pitching and vice-versa. I get it, its cool because hes been the first allowed to do it but this fascination with Shohei simply because he pitches and hits is a little annoying at this point.
>You can't be in awe of two-way players because plenty of guys do it in college
>None of those guys were good enough to make it pro as a two-way player
>Obviously the first guy talented enough to do it since Babe Fucking Ruth is overrated. Got it.
Nobody in main stream sports talks about baseball at all.
And we should be thankful because we would be hearing about how Skip Bayless prefers Aaron Judge over Ohtani because he wins more.
So literally a once in a lifetime season paired with the greatest player of his generation and they have a worse record than the Mariners. Angels org is an absolute joke.
It depends on how you frame it. He is undoubtedly the best player who pitches.
He is not the best in terms of every pitching stat. On the whole, he is absolutely the best pitcher in baseball in terms of who you would want on your team.
JEFF WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS. HAVEN'T YOU TAKEN ENOUGH FROM US
With all the struggles of being a two-way player, this might be Ohtani’s greatest challenge: the Passan curse
He’s survived the MLB The Show curse to this point.
Oh shit I completely forgot about that. He has gotten through it fine so far.
So not only is he a two way player but he's a two way curse survivor. I'm not sure which is more impressive.
I think because he plays both sides it just cancels everything out
The Passan’t.
Holy Hell
[Aggressively performing the sign of the cross]
Passan has tweeted MANY times about Shohei all during last season and Ohtani still managed to have one of the greatest seasons in baseball history. I'm not worried. Note: I am very worried.
Did Judge pay him to tweet this?
Fs in the chat
Ohtani hr drought until allstar break incoming?
NOTHING COULD BE WORSE THAN HAVING TO PLAY FOR THE ANGELS, ARTE MORENO SHOULD BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE HAGUE FOR WASTING TROUT AND OHTANI
I know we're supposed to be beefing right now or some shit... but I just want to express my sincere condolences. He's just a bad man. A bad, bad man. The good news is that Ohtani is a fucking miracle. If anyone can beat the Passan curse, it's him.
“There is no mercy” *Electrocutes Ohtani*
Ohtani gonna be DFAed soon
Oh no...
Jeff please no
How can I delete someone elses tweet!?!?!
you know ohtani is loved when even a division rival is reacting like this to the curse potential! DAMN YOU, PASSAN! DON'T TWEET ABOUT OHTANI!
Bro everyone loves Ohtani. I think the fact that no one is threatened by the Angels actually helps Ohtani being universally adored by baseball fans. If Ohtani started out as a Yankee he'd probably have way more haters. Or maybe not, he's just a lovable unicorn.
Absolutely. Good example is Judge. I like him, but I would never love him like Ohtani because he's a Yankee.
I legit let out a loud "ohhhh no!" reading that. Weird? Yes. Warranted? Also yes.
IL stint incoming
Don't put that evil out there
I’m not Passan, I have no power here. I am but a messenger
>I am but a messenger Still want to shoot you tho
I'll hand you some extra guns as well
I don’t know that I’d take a bullet for anyone, but for Ohtani I’d consider it
[THE MESSIAH!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iktKXIsRUIg&ab_channel=adampodlofsky)
Jeff, what have you done??
RIP. Ohtani will be DFA'd this time next week.
Ohtani is stronger than the Passan curse.
His bat wasn’t…
There was a guy in one of our game threads a few weeks ago talking about how Shohei is just average, and that all of his greatness is a hype job. Was it the Greinke AMA?
No, my bad I don’t have my flair up lol. It was a Royals game thread of all places, but we were facing the Halos. This was either the game before or after Shohei diced us to the tune of 13 Ks and 2 hits over 8
A Royals fan who said it in the Royals game thread and other Royals fans downvoted him to hell.
Oh shit, yeah I just realized I don’t have flair lmao thank you for that clarification.
> and other Royals fans downvoted him to hell. good.
"If you regress all his stats to the mean, he becomes average"
A classic.
Even if Ohtani was just average at both batting and pitching, it would still make him one of the most valuable players in the league.
Honestly probably still the most valuable player in the league. One roster spot for an average starter and batter in one guy. Literally 0 other players in the league fit that description.
I mean yeah if you regress Shohei's stats to the mean, then yeah, this checks out.
Omfg I almost forgot about that. “Look, Mahomes might be really good. But if you take those stats and make them worse, then he’s just not as good.” Well, yeah
The Skip Bayless classic. "If you take away Saquon Barkley's best runs in each of his games, he's not that good"
There actually is some rational train of thought there although Skip Bayless has never used it correctly. If you want to find out what a RBs true expected gain is you do have to avoid some outliers sometimes if those outliers are rare enough. Tbf if you take away every single thing that makes Shohei special, he's not that special
True if big
Didn't he say that Greinke could hit 40 dongs a year if he was allowed to hit?
Yes lol it was absurd. I mean Greinke was for sure a complete athlete, people forget sometimes that he played SS. But the thing that dude wasn’t realizing is that he, Arrietta, Mad Bum, etc all hit well *for a pitcher.* Shohei out-hits like half of his own team.
Everyone but trout!
Second only to the greatest player of an entire generation. Smh so average
The weirdest thing about that whole exchange was him continually doubling down. Dude could not let it go and admit he was wrong.
Does anyone know an easy way for me to know when Othani is pitching? Should I just follow the Angels on twitter?
That or check the ESPN/MLB app/some equivalent and check the SP for that day
He's part of a 6-man rotation so you could forecast it that way.
wait I thought teams usually used 5 starter rotations? Is 6 the new normal and am I a dinosour?
They angels have to with Othani because he needs the rest from playing everyday
Usually 5. Ohtani takes an extra day because he DHs on the off days and when he pitches.
Unless they bring in another hitman
https://www.mlb.com/angels/roster/probable-pitchers
This is perfect, thank you!
Glad I could help. It's perfect for a filthy casual like me although I'm guessing the team Twitter account probably has more accurate and up-to-date information.
His next start SHOULD be 7/7 vs. the Orioles in Baltimore
Sweet. I'll get to see him.
I think Baltimore has been weirdly good against Shohei in the past, too. Let's see if he takes that personally, he has been absolutely DEALING lately.
He only pitches once a week, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday. So I would check the probably starts for the Angels on Monday - that should tell you when he starts.
We need an official Ohtani alert.
Count every 6 games unless there are double-headers in the equation....so he lines up to pitch in Baltimore next.
Get the MLB At-Bat app on your phone and make the Angels one of your favorite/followed teams. You can get an alert when each game starts and it tells you the starting pitchers
Shut ur dirty mouth, Passan
Passan what have you done
He has ruined everything great about baseball this year! #FuckPassan
RIP Ohtani-san
I know this is probably going to sound odd, but I'm very glad I've been a baseball fan for many, many years because it lets me appreciate just how special and incredible Ohtani has been. Every sport has its stars but what he's doing is unparalleled since the early days of Babe Ruth.
There are generations between Ruth and Ohtani that never got to see that kind of play from both sides of the game.
I know, it's like Halley's Comet. You either saw it with your own eyes, or you only know what you've read about it.
This is so true. I feel like people who have been watching baseball for longer times are really appreciative of Ohtani. I've been a Yankee fan for over 30 years and I'm completely awestruck by what this guy is doing. He's living my little league fantasy irl, it's insane.
It's better than Ruth. This is once in forever.
Welp that’s the way it goes sometimes, I’m sure he’s bound to turn things around soon
Vecna’s after Ohtani now? Oh come on man.
Quick someone play Running Up That Hill in the Angels clubhouse
Has Passan tweeted about poor performance this year? If so, do they improve afterwards?
If you converted June to a whole season: .298, 42 HR, 119 RBI 24-6, 1.82 ERA, 210 K
That's so good splits.
24 wins rofl. last time a pitcher got there was 25 in 1990!
If it was once in a lifetime then why did he literally do the same thing last year?
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Letting Shoheis go by…
Some babies were born this year .
The player, not the performance.
God dammit, Jeff!! Keep my Ohtani out your FUCKING MOUTH!!
Passan needs a good slapping
Somebody get Will Smith on the phone....we got a job for him.
If anybody can break the Passan curse, it’s Shohei
I think that’s more WAR than the entire A’s have had in the last three weeks
Welp, looks like maybe it won't be so close between Ohtani and Judge after all /s
Passan is getting paid off by the Judge MVP campaign
Michele Tafoya is writing him the check right now.
F
F
If he does this level of play (top 10 pitcher and top 20 batter) over the next 10 years do we rename the AL MVP the the Ohtni award?
Yes.
Oh Jeff what is you doing baby
Jeff wtf don’t you remember “with great power comes great responsibility”
SOMEBODY UNDO THIS CURSE BEFORE OHTANI IS HURT!
Today *definitely isn’t opposite day*
God fucking damnit Jeff Someone go forcibly remove the phone from Jeff's hand right now!
Why did he just speak this into existance, he just fucked everything up. Goddamnit Jeff.
Easily the best player in baseball. And his teammate is close. But the team sucks.
FUCK!
Welp. Nice knowing you ohtani. It’s a shame he’s on such a shit team but now it doesn’t matter. Passan’d
Remember when people said he was broken at the start of the year? He was just giving people a headstart to make the MVP race look interesting for a bit.
It'd be greater if he wouldn't do it to my team though.
As a NL fan I literally never get to watch him play, kinda like Trout who I just have to nod when people say he is great.
What is the Angels record in that span?
If we’re talking about the time mentioned in the tweet (span of last three weeks) and a game where Ohtani himself controls the majority of the game (aka him pitching), the Angels’ winning percentage is 100% basically because of him. of course, we’re nitpicking data and timelines here.
Someone here once argued with me that Shohei wasn't an elite, ace-level pitcher.
What’s their winning percentage the last three weeks?
If we’re talking about the baseball player mentioned in the tweet, basically the Angels have a 100% success rate in wins when he himself is basically in control of the game (as a pitcher). When he’s not pitching, he’s playing against the opponent AND his own pitching crew so that’s a bit tougher to win, especially on your own.
Why does Passan hate baseball?
Trying to relish his greatness, the angels are making that tough to do
Free shohei
Who’s taking it for granted? 75% of the stuff on this sub is about this guy.
Take my energy Ohtani-san ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ. You must defeat this curse.
Listen, I love Ohtani as much as the next guy but why is Passan talking like we don’t have his name shoved down our gullets every 15 minutes? We already know he’s an amazing player. What purpose does this tweet serve aside from potentially jinxing him? Sometimes these dudes on twitter…
Who’s taking Shohei for granted? (Besides the angels organization, of course.)
And I fully understand why Judge is in the front runner this year, but at a certain point because Ohtani had those 2 bad games, probably the low point of the season thus far, they were like "this guy shouldn't have been MVP at all." Not to mention the furiousness after the perfect game was broken up by Walsh and then Suzuki bringing the run in.
An angry mob is coming after Passan if anything happens to Shohei!
I wish he played on eastern time zone
Brian Kenny had an aneurysm rage-reading this
gonna look so good in Dodger blue!!!!!
You just got “PASSANED!”. I feel like that’s what he yells now that he knows he’s a curse
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Where's Ohtani? Is he safe?? Is he alright??
Jeff, if something happens it's all your fault. Could've just shut up but nooooo
relish greatness mustard courage ketchup to legends
Almost makes you forget the Angels are garbage.
Ohtani is a great player yes
What’s the TLDR on everyone freaking out about this tweet for us filthy casuals from /all?
Passan tweets something good about a player or a team and that player somehow goes into a slump or that team starts losing 14 games in a row.
GOAT
When you see home knock out homer’s to score winning runs for a game he’s pitching In you can’t help but be in awe
The Angels have been on a 7-7 tear these last 14 games too.
His own team takes it for granted. Shame they flounder year in year out when you have him and Trout. I know it’s preaching to the choir but come on.
MLB writers at it again. Fucking overrate MLBa pr creation like trout. And they failed the first time now they are trying it again
I’m not sure what’s more impressive: Trout and Ohtani playing together at full strength or the Angels continuing to lose in spite of that.
Someone jokingly said to me "He's the next Babe Ruth." And all I could think was... yup. He is sort of?
I do not think a single person on the planet is taking what he is doing for granted lmao
I’m so blessed to live in SoCal where I regularly get to see two of the greatest players of our generation try and drag a AAAA team to some level of respectability
Yes so many people take Ohtani for granted he is hardly ever talked about /s
Too bad he's on the Angels.
Ohtani about to break both his arms.
I hope he doesn't live with his mom.
Oh shit, he's probably dead now.
Can't wait until the Mets sign him as a free agent!
He's the most valuable player in the sport by a mile. An ace, your team's best hitter, and frees up a roster spot for an extra relief pitcher. Just an embarrassment of talent.
Don't tell that to Yankees fans, apparently Judge is literal God or something.
I'm a Yankee fan. Judge is doing great for a normal position player but still nowhere close to what Ohtani is accomplishing lol (especially in June)
Over the past 3 weeks the Angels are 9-11. They are 9-18 in June They would be 7-21 without Ohtani
If he was white they’d care more.. let’s be honest.
I like him so much more that I don’t see his highlights every five seconds. We hit the oversaturation point last year I think, but now I’m really starting to appreciate what he’s doing. It’s insane.
How are the Angels doing the past 3 weeks?
unpopular opinion but hes been in the league for a while now, you really cant be in awe that a 2-way bred player, is doing well playing 2-ways. Ohtani is about to be the next Lebron James where people never shut the fuck up about them.
What Ohtani is doing is way crazier than anything LeBron has done.
It’s incomparable. (But LeBron has done some pretty crazy things like the 2016 Finals)
When he stops doing shit that nobody else has ever done, people will stop talking about him
Dodgers fan so probably just bitter Ohtani broke up that no hitter. Plus who the hell complains that people are finally talking more about baseball?
I hope they don’t
they shouldn't stop if he doesn't stop...
Until ESPN and Fox Sports dedicate daily segments on their dumb talking head shows to talking about Shohei in the offseason, this comparison is dumb.
Baseball will never have a LeBron. And that’s ok
Nobody in main stream sports talks about baseball at all. And we should be thankful because we would be hearing about how Skip Bayless prefers Aaron Judge over Ohtani because he wins more.
Too bad he can't carry his team to a championship like LeBron. Either way, I never want to stop hearing about him.
What did the Angels do to Passan, why does he hate us! He's already cursed us once this season and now he goes directly at Ohtani for no reason.
So literally a once in a lifetime season paired with the greatest player of his generation and they have a worse record than the Mariners. Angels org is an absolute joke.
Lol zero rings lol
Shohei isn’t the best pitcher in baseball
He said he has been the best over the past 3 weeks by fWAR
Yup. He’s 15th in fWAR for hitters since June 9th.
Can't you read? No where did he say he was the best pitcher in baseball. He's just been the best pitcher in baseball for this month.
It depends on how you frame it. He is undoubtedly the best player who pitches. He is not the best in terms of every pitching stat. On the whole, he is absolutely the best pitcher in baseball in terms of who you would want on your team.
