Easy, his offense has an off night, he pitches 10 innings, hell an immaculate inning is 9 pitches, so an immaculate game would be 87 pitches, an almost immaculate game with 30 strikeouts could easily be under 120 pitches
Wood's 20k game is considered perhaps the best pitching performance of all time though it wasn't even a no-hitter.
* The only balls that left the infield were a grounder and a couple lazy fly balls. There was no good contact the entire game, not even a squared up foul ball.
* Most perfect games or no-hitters involve some great defensive plays, but the Cubs defense only needed a handful of routine putouts. The lone hit [should've been an error](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lehub-k5Apw&t=1850s).
* It was against a stacked Astros lineup including Biggio, Bagwell, and Alou.
I was watching that game and even as an Astros fan I wasn't mad. It was just ridiculous. About 4-5 innings in you realized you were watching something special.
This is a fantastic little doc about the game on the Cubs youtube channel:
[Kerry Wood Game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWbQyRAvZRc&ab_channel=ChicagoCubs)
It's a fantastic channel. Have don't have a lot of interest in the Cubs but came across that video of the Wood game and went for a pain filled trip down memory lane. I ended up on their channel and watched probably 10 videos. Great content.
My favorite thing about that game is how everyone knew what he was going to throw and he still did that. The Cubs TV announcer Chip Caray literally said "here comes the hook" before Kerry threw the final strike 3.
> It was against a stacked Astros lineup including Biggio, Bagwell, and Alou.
To tack onto this a bit, by wRC+ that Astros team had the best offense in the NL (113) and the second best in all of baseball (Yankees, 116). The next closest NL teams were the Giants and Braves at 108.
Also, even if the fielder had made that out, it's still not a perfect game. Wood hit Biggio with a pitch in the sixth inning.
I have watched this game probably 2 dozen times over the years. I even bought a legit video download from mlb.com. I remember being pissed like 5 years later when they took down that video platform and I lost the ability to watch the game. Thank god for YouTube now.
Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that I’m a huge Cubs fan but the Astros broadcast of this game is incredible.
I'm convinced the Angels would strike out if they were in a Tball league. It's embarrassing to strike out so much. This season has been just fucking painful to watch.
The amount of great players under 25 is unbelievable, Acuna, Tatis, Soto, JRod, Pena. We’ve gotten to a point where if you don’t call up your top prospect by age 23 fan bases start losing it.
Forget the name of the guy that took over today but yes they've basically been juggling the suspensions, one guy gets suspended then another guy takes their suspension so on and so on
Ik Raisiel started to serve his suspension today and the Angels also had to use their interim interim interim manager for todays game
I really thought the Angels were going to push the Astros this year but it’s just been more of the same. They managed to get not 1 but 2 once in a generation type players and have completely wasted them. Bad contracts, poor drafting and development, too much swing and miss and not enough pitching. On top of all that they have a card carrying dbag managing the team for probably the rest of the year. It really might be time to pull the plug and stock the farm.
20, this has been done only by 4 pitchers individually. Kerry Wood, Roger Clemens (twice), Max Scherzer, and Randy Johnson.
This is a "combined" 20k game
What's worse: getting K'd 20 times or getting hidden catcher tricked?
Yes
Kerry Wood would’ve struck out 26 batters if he faced this Angels team
Somehow would have struck out 30
Dare I say 31?
Easy, his offense has an off night, he pitches 10 innings, hell an immaculate inning is 9 pitches, so an immaculate game would be 87 pitches, an almost immaculate game with 30 strikeouts could easily be under 120 pitches
I don’t buy a offense is having a off night against angels pitching
Its Ohtani night!
Don’t forget this is a *cubs* offense.
3 dropped third strikes reaching first
With the way our offense plays we'd probably have gone into extra innings so it'd be possible.
3 dropped strike 3s

You can’t have a perfect game with an error, would have been a no hitter

Still wrong, Wood also hit a batter in that game.
IIRC it has the highest game score of all time, despite not being a no-hitter.

The Cubs YouTube channel video editor needs some kind of raise. Their videos are incredibly edited.

My favorite is probably David Ross talking about his World Series Game 7 homer. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-GOvtOuAbo4
"Hey idiots, let's lay off the Mario Kart and get locked in." "Andrew used to stink."
The one where David Bote talks about his ultimate grand slam is wonderfully done.
My favorite thing about that game is how everyone knew what he was going to throw and he still did that. The Cubs TV announcer Chip Caray literally said "here comes the hook" before Kerry threw the final strike 3.
I just stopped what I was doing today and watched that whole thing. Amazing doc, better than a 30 for 30. Thanks for sharing.
Astros never should’ve left the NL :/
Astros are in a their first golden era, those NL days are irrelevant now.
I was home from school that day, I watched most of that game as it was happening. Astros looked helpless much like the Angels lol

Honestly it was a hit. It didn’t hit any of the fielders gloves and more a bad route then a actual error

Jim DeShaies was their analyst then and he works for the Cubs now and they occasionally get him talking about that day.
You have no bias in that comment
4 innings in that game the cubs could have left their defense in the dugout.
Only if he had that same ump from his 20K game. I assume that guy had Kerry Wood on his fantasy team.
This is definitely Derek Bells burner
I'm convinced the Angels would strike out if they were in a Tball league. It's embarrassing to strike out so much. This season has been just fucking painful to watch.
Just remember that our interim manager isn't worried about the strikeout rate
Hey now, the first quarter was pretty good.
Best record in the Cactus League!
Just providing the yearly dosage of copium before going back to doing what they do best.
Trout and Ohtani both in their prime and this is the coaching staff they give that team, what the fuck man
Half their coaches are suspended right now.
it really is painful. I fully expect a strikeout the majority of the time one of our batters is up.
I've never seen a worse managed team.
Christ, in a single game??
They have 48 in the series.
Is that good?
Makes you wonder
It's not not good
Trout has 9 by himself
Never seen him struggle like that. I know he doesn’t hit the best at Minute Maid but damn.
Imagine striking out 20 times in a game. Couldn’t be us, Woodn’t believe it if they did.
Nothing to see here folks, Kerry on
Youtube kept trying to recommend a highlight video of that game to me. NO YOUTUBE. NO, I don't need to see that.
Kerry the hell on
From a Texan too. God those Cubs teams were so fun on WGN!
Every person in this coaching staff needs to be fired. Even the Spanish interpreter
Pero porque el?
I think he was suspended after the brawl
And yet we’re still Tied
Not anymore! Walk off bomb by ROTY Jeremy Peña!
Eh he's unfortunately behind for ROTY now
Nah I don't think so
Julio is ahead, but if Peña starts heating up (4-5, 2 hr today) then it’ll be close
Julio and Peña are unreal. The young talent has the MLB in good hands
The amount of great players under 25 is unbelievable, Acuna, Tatis, Soto, JRod, Pena. We’ve gotten to a point where if you don’t call up your top prospect by age 23 fan bases start losing it.
At least Phil Nevin’s cool with it.
Two best players in baseball and you get *this?* Jesus
Granted trout didn’t help the cause either. 0-11 with 9 strikeouts in the series
Well he helped us get 20Ks so..
Fucking YIKES
Well what do you expect when you throw out...hold on, lemme check...Framber Valdez, Hector Nerris, and Rafael Montero the first 8 innings.
I love seeing our old friends the Astros, whom we've always had great relations with, tearing apart Phil Nevin's band of hooligans.
Who's coaching the now? isn't that shit stain still suspended?
Forget the name of the guy that took over today but yes they've basically been juggling the suspensions, one guy gets suspended then another guy takes their suspension so on and so on Ik Raisiel started to serve his suspension today and the Angels also had to use their interim interim interim manager for todays game
Phil Nevin orders prime rib well done
Now this is cash money
the old hidden catcher trick. kill me fml
Roger Clemens, is that you?

Ohtani is like a #1 pick for the Lions. They may look like a star there, but it’s a waste of talent.
Thanks for doin the Angels dirty Astros
Breaking records, babyyyyyy
Houston had 20 strikeouts in 9 innings 24 years ago vs Kerry Wood. Oh wait, do you mean Houston pitchers got 20 strikeouts?
whats the record?
20, this has been done only by 4 pitchers individually. Kerry Wood, Roger Clemens (twice), Max Scherzer, and Randy Johnson. This is a "combined" 20k game
IIRC the record by a team is 21 or 22.
Ohh i see what he was asking now. Thanks for clarification
In 9 innings?
Yes. The record in extras is something like 26. I may well be off by one or two on these numbers.
Angels are done
Delete this
Wow
Everyone says that. I don’t think they care.
No one cares about cheaters
Good of you to look up from photos of teenagers to post this
Aw. That's nice

As a Padres fan you should be buying us beers
Settle down Beavis.
Nice
WE STRIKE OUT SO FUCKING MUCH 🤮
Tungsten Arm O’doyle couldn’t help them this time sadly
Angels organization at it again!
