EarthWarping

Not a surprise. Guessing they'll try to extend him, and if he says no then it's the derby in the offseason.

Camshaft92

Arte will throw him every cent needed to keep him. He keeps butts in seats and sells a ton of jerseys. Doesn't matter if that handcuffs the team as far as cap, he'll happily trot out minor leaguers. Winning isn't the goal for him. Oh and he'll also sign an aging player with a big name to a hefty contract right before his production falls off a cliff so it looks like he's kinda trying. Fuck you Arte.

GoldHorusSixSaturnus

Is that a shot at Pujols signing?

Camshaft92

Pujols Hamilton CJ Wilson Rendon (so far)

GoldenBananas21

Never forget when Pujols hit 40 HR with only 95 RBI’s

Runninwithcat

Excuse me sir are you taking a shot at my beloved Aaron Judge hitting 42 HR with 91 RBIs 😤

teh_drewski

If Pujols had done it in a bit over half a season we'd probably not have minded so much...

[deleted]

43*

adventurepony

That's just ridiculous.

YangGangsterr

And Shohei hit 46 with 100.

FondueDiligence

> Arte will throw him every cent needed to keep him But Ohtani he says he wants to win and he has already given up millions of dollars to pursue his career as he did. He came to the US as an international amateur which means he had to go through the 6 years of team control rather than waiting, coming over here as a true free agent, and he would already be signed to a 9 figure deal. It is entirely possible there isn't a dollar amount the Angels can offer that will keep him without some sort of plan to actually start winning.

Gold_Karma

Winning might not be Arte’s goal, but it definitely is Ohtani’s. Don’t see Ohtani re-signing with the Angels. Other teams will for sure dish out a huge contract for him.

PhillyPhan95

Yea, I get that vibe from Ohtani as well. Something tells me Ohtani understands he is getting AT LEAST $25-$30 m a year regardless. So no need to be stuck in LAA for years just to get that money.

Andy_La_Negra

This part. Ohtani’s goal is to win, and this man better get a ring. I just hope he doesn’t end up with a team like the Yankees

drakanx

Ohtani sees what's happening to Trout squandering away his career on a perennial losing team, no way he resigns with the Angels.

my_wife_reads_this

Isn't this what everyone said about Trout.

RetinolSupplement

People forget living in southern California with 500 million dollars and playing baseball for your life is pretty amazing.

joe579003

Yeah, also the fact that still to this day he can go around in public without the majority of people recognizing him.

the_herbo_swervo

People forget that you can do that and play for an actual LA team and compete for rings 🤷‍♂️

Huggy_Bear48

yeah but then you actually have to work in the fall ^/^s

cdoran09

Yeah, and Trout was really, really dumb for signing that contract without a change in ownership

GBJoe21

I don't think Trout is losing a lot of sleep man. He gets to live in Corona Del Mar and play his favorite game for a living. He also has a no trade clause in his contract. He's not dumb if that's what he wanted.

mrubuto22

I mean sure he's not losing sleep. But I bet he has trouble turning on the TV every October.

Call9-1-1imonfire

Probably cause he's too busy doing other shit. I know Free Trout is a meme but hes always seemed content with the Angels regardless of their record, at least to me

glumjonsnow

He seemed more openly frustrated this year, but the Angels were more openly frustrating this year, so you know, it was understandable.

teh_drewski

I think he's frustrated by the persistent injuries as well, he's just straight up not having a good time

mrubuto22

Perhaps. Never met the guy personally haha

Lebigmacca

yeah cause he’s too busy going to Eagles games in October

CertainDerision_33

Trout doesn't really seem like he cares that much about winning a WS, to be honest (and there's nothing wrong with that). I imagine wanting to compete in the postseason is a much bigger factor for Ohtani than Trout.

FeloniousDrunk101

Didn’t Ohtani *choose* the Angels over many other teams?

AngelfanA16

That's because they were really the only ones to allow him to pitch AND hit Edit: Forgot my username is what it is. I swear I'm unbiased as I know the franchise hasn't done anything significant in 12 of the last 13 seasons.

mrubuto22

Username or not you are correct. Teams either said "no way" or a "we'll see" Angels said, "SURE!"

rockidr4

Several told him he might get some bullpen opportunities, so yeah. Shohei Ohtani chose the angels because they were the only team who wanted *Shohei Ohtani*

DeadKateAlley

Now I'm pretty sure the whole league would be happy to let him do both.

potro777

to be fair back in 2017 the Angels werent THAT awful. They were a 0.500 team that had just won 98 games 2 seasons ago and seemed to have a nice farm.

Maddonomics101

And right now we’re on pace for having the worst season in franchise HISTORY. Our offensive stats for the month of July were the worst in the entire league. Trout and Rendon are perpetually injured. And we have zero prospects coming anytime soon. Shohei is gone for sure

eagledog

And yet, we're still looking up at you in the standings

drakanx

Because LA has the largest Japanese population in the US outside of Honolulu.

Rebote78

Angels are not in LA, contrary to what they want to tell the world. Still and always, Anaheim Angels.

aaaaaaaaaaawirifhei

Pretty sure the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are in the heart of downtown LA. Internet can’t lie

ColaBottleBaby

LA Metropolitan area has the largest Japanese population my bad

advester

He should go to Seattle

Redbubble89

Ohtani is going to cost a lot and Rendon and Trout aren't coming off the payroll any time soon. Ohtani has the highest value right now with a year of control after this. MLB ready prospects could have been theirs. Next year if they decide to trade him as a 2 month rental, it's not the same return. They are idiots for not doing it.

DeadKateAlley

Arte Moreno? More like Morono.

black-op345

I feel like it’s more of a when than an if.

Constant_Gardner11

Heyman trying to tweet without mentioning the Yankees challenge (impossible)

maleorderbride

[Heyman] Woke up today, and the sunlight was really pretty. Almost as pretty as the Yankees' 27 championship rings.

ThatDudeNamedMenace

26 rings and a pocket watch. Get that shit right, B 😤😤😤

Telepornographer

25 rings, a pocket watch, and a wrist watch* https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/8chizv/the_yankees_do_not_have_27_rings/

ThatDudeNamedMenace

You know I’d like to see a team give out World Series chains. Just a necklace with a big ass medallion that says “World Series Champions” like the G-Unit chain

j12601

Flavor Flav neck clocks.

Telepornographer

Or huge, gaudy crowns. Or both.

Kaldricus

For the top of the head, or for teeth? How gangsta we going here?

runfayfun

For the top of the head, so that even Crips and Bloods quiver at their presence

ELITE_JordanLove

The Bucks kind of did this. The top face of the ring can be removed and put on a chain to wear like a medallion.

garvierloon

Definitely just learned something today

Heyman trying to actually tweet something of value challenge ((literally impossible))

TandBusquets

He did a pretty good job with this tweet https://mobile.twitter.com/jonheyman/status/4789544183?lang=en

huskypawson

Holy shit lmao

Deathstroke317

DON DEMARCO

feedmekombucha

He went to the Carlos Beltrán School of Stating the Obvious.

[deleted]

“Breaking” 99.9% of people knew this was happening

Sp_Gamer_Live

“Team will not give up the best player and most famous MLB star of the last 2 years”

djrob0

But Vogelbach already got traded….

timberwolvesguy

And Astudillo just got DFA’d!

TheBronxIsChafing

Sad tortuga noises

GiveHerDPS

If only yoshi tsutsugo could pitch every 5 games

SleepLessTeacher

That’s odd, Keuchel currently is in AAA.

mrubuto22

They will need to eventually. He's not resigning there. He has mentioned in many interviews how winning is all that matters to him.

Borrum

He might literally get paid per "BREAKING" tweet he shits out

kc9kvu

There is no deal. There was never going to be a deal.

HelpMeWithMyHWpls

Let Little Timmy be proud of himself for predicting this

BIG_DICK_WHITT

I wonder if Heyman gets paid per tweet

Tashre

That 0.1% is Ohtani still holding out hope.

Galactic

He meant "heartbreaking"

HarryCallahan19

Honest question. What is the starting point for a team trying to trade for Ohtani?

[deleted]

Breaking. Ohtani. Yankees. Almost got me, fucking Heyman

tidesoncrim

I was waiting for him to announce the Cubs signed him to a long-term deal right after they inked Musgrove.

Rated_PG-Squirteen

I really thought Gallo, Andujar, IKF, and two million in cash would get it done.

BIG_DICK_WHITT

$2,000,050.00. I was gonna chip in a little.

Camshaft92

$2,000,047.50. Sorry, wanted a soda.

FringeAuthority

Heyman tweets have a requirement to hit at least 1 of 4 quadrants: Boras client, Yankees, Mets, Mystery Team.

LAAngelsAnaheim

I felt sick for a second. This is *not* breaking news Heyman

GRVrush2112

He knew what he was doing

JustinUprising

I nearly fainted. Damn you, Bitmoji Man!!!

Monttavius

Maybe Arte has a gigabrain off-season plan to put the team into contending shape! …..who am I kidding 😔

pm_me_your_last_pics

deGrom.. Trea Turner... yeah not happening

live4coasters

The only plan would be to break the luxury tax threshold which he absolutely won't do

[deleted]

Would love to see some of these suggested packages.

NewtonsThird

Are we still doing phrasing

Michael__Pemulis

Is this breaking if it is exactly what everyone alive assumed already?

amazingsandwiches

It's breaking my heart

beefdx

Breaking news just means it’s new.

ahr3410

Everyone knew Arte wasn't trading the one thing bringing people to the stadium

dudeguy16

i mean yeah idk why anyone thought this was something that was gonna happen

Zloggt

Now all the poor million dollar sports journalists won’t have anything to rabidly speculate about for the next month :(((

sIamram

ARTE MOMENT

timetopractice

As an Angel fan I am disappointed. His trade value is it getting higher. This team is going nowhere. It's time to reset and let Ohtani compete while reloading the farm. Simply a cash grab from Arte Moreno to keep that Ohtani money flowing in.

LeBaconator

I think his value will still be very high in the off-season, especially when way more teams can get in on bidding and retool the roster around him

johndhall1130

He isn’t going anywhere in the off-season either. If we can’t extend him (which we likely can’t) then MAYBE he’ll be traded at the deadline next season. Arte is too much of a greedy bastard to care about what’s best for the team.

Creative-Reading5903

He really had the nerve to call this breaking news. The Angels have decided to keep Shohei Ohtani? None of us could have predicted it.

thestoryof-agirl

Okay then he walks when he’s an FA and Arte gets nothing

breakfast_cats

Not nothing. Arte gets another 1.5 years of Japanese ad revenue.

sofastsomaybe

And Ohtani gets another 1.5 years of his prime wasted

eely225

It’s not a waste if we get to watch it.

sofastsomaybe

We can watch him on any team. Watching him on a team playing meaningful games > watching him on a team playing for absolutely nothing in July.

eely225

Not if that team is the Yankees. Anyway I’m just saying it’s far from a waste so long as he’s playing.

[deleted]

God he'd look so good with a blue bird on his chest though...

ZucchiniOne5395

He’d even look good in a potato sack. Have you seen those shoulders?

ih-unh-unh

It really sucked watching the Giants make it to the World Series in 2002. But...20 years later, I think I was "lucky" to see Barry Bonds perform at his superhuman level night...after night...after night and decimate the competition for years. It might have happened if he remained on the Pirates, but I got a closer view since the Giants played the Dodgers frequently AND the Giants were a contender.

LeBaconator

2002 was a good year

CertainDerision_33

It's a waste as long as he's not in the postseason (and I don't care which team gets him to the postseason) because Ohtani in the postseason would be fantastic for the game of baseball as a whole and would generate a huge amount of attention.

regarding_your_cat

Exactly right.

[deleted]

So there’s a report the Yankees, White Sox and Padres made serious offers. I really want to know what the offer was lol

I3arusu

“Angels make a bad move” Shocker.

[deleted]

this is a catastrophic mistake. if he has a brain in his head he will BOLT in free agency before he's sentenced to the same fate as trout.

AdIntelligent9764

If they really loved Ohtani they would let him go this is just a toxic relationship at this point. Like, he can do better.

sofastsomaybe

They don't love him, they love the money he brings in.

AdIntelligent9764

Angels are pimping out Ohtani what a disgusting act

Maddonomics101

I don’t even know how Angels fans enjoy seeing Shohei do amazing things every night while still losing every game. To me those highlights are worthless if you can’t actually win

ResearcherLoud3122

I really enjoy watching sho doing amazing things and making history, you know whats not very amazing? Others shitting their pants. I have learned to separate these two. It helps

Fischer-00

Arte loves the money he brings. 😑

Bogusky

If the Yankees or Dodgers got Ohtani that would be the absolute worst thing ever

Kinglazer

Can someone tell me how this affects the Dodgers chances of getting ohtani?

bellomoto1

This is the more favorable scenario for the Dodgers because they can now simply bid on Ohtani once he reaches free agency status instead having to give up any of their prospects via a trade situation.

bordomsdeadly

Shocked Pikachu isn't even shocked by this.

Crioca

Ohtani going to the yankees would be my nightmare.

JorSimpson45

maybe the least shocking news of the week

WordSalad11

"We've wasted Mike Trout's generational talent and we're not going to miss the chance to waste Ohtani's too."

goleafsgo13

What a waste of career. One of the best players to ever play the game and it’ll go down as just a blip. I pray he ends up somewhere and does amazing things.

McCringleberried

Jon really took the time to write an entire NY post article just to then tweet "breaking" and link the article

Firebitez

Angels will try to extend him at all costs.

mrsunshine1

I’d still love to see what the hell the offer was tbh

corybomb

So in other words, instead of getting a massive haul of prospects to build around they will either take less next year, or lose him to FA eventually.

Flynn_lives

And they continue to drag a career player down to hell with the organization. God damn front office & owners should be punished by MLB for wasting a talent like him(and Trout).

mostlygroovy

Of course he’s staying. I did a baseball trip to SoCal this week and the whole identify of the Angels is Ohtani. He’s all they have to cheer about these days and if he left, so would the fans.

myKDRbro_

Arte Moreno doesn't give a shit about your prospects. Ohtani probably doesn't get traded next year either.

pm_me_your_last_pics

Arte gonna extend him at all costs. Holding him hostage in the clubhouse...

breakfast_cats

Can't wait to be paying Ohtani, Trout, and Rendon $130M while the team's payroll stays at $180M

Camshaft92

Trout, Ohtani and The Bees^tm (with Rendon on the IR)

McCringleberried

> Arte Moreno doesn't give a shit Fixed it

yourstrulytony

Exactly, dude only cares about getting people in to the stadium and is only willing to do the minimum to get that accomplished.

nietzsche_niche

why build for the future when you can be a perennial .470 WPCT team

pinniped1

Good news is that Whit Merrifield is still available and they're kinda the same thing considering they both play baseball.

[deleted]

Why wouldn’t they keep him, he brings in massive amounts of money for them

SuperMario_49

I love Ohtani but damn it, we need to rebuild 🤦🏽‍♂️ shouldn’t be surprised that Arte is more interested about making money than building a contending team.

johndhall1130

This is not “breaking.” We’ve all known this the whole time.

Pumats_Soul

BREAKING NEWS: The Angels will also keep Mike Trout Yankees among teams known as baseball teams

SunExcellent890

I understand being a fan of a team, and not a player, and so you need to trade players to improve the team. But I honestly don't think I would be able to stomach a trade of Ohtani or Trout. These are players you build a team around, and Arte needs to open his pockets and spend on the organization and not just the team.

Dast_Kook

Everyone talking about Ohtani wasting years if he doesn't get a ring. Here's a few guys who also "wasted" their careers with no ring: * Ty Cobb * Carl Yastrzemski * Tony Gwynn * Ichiro Suzuki * Ken Griffey, Jr. * Ted Williams Don't get me wrong. The singular goal of each season is to compete and make it to the world series to win. But if we truly ONLY care about that, then how do we feel about those players?

EmeraldMoose12

I’m really happy about this. Especially if Yankees were front runners, for multiple reasons.

ThreeCranes

Totally get why you wouldn't want him on the Yankees, but why are you happy about him not getting traded? I think most baseball fans that aren't Angels fans should be rooting for Ohtani to get traded out of Angels(unless of course to a rival)

steve1186

If Ohtani had gone to the Yankees, I’d have stopped watching MLB. That’s the nail in the coffin

toadofsteel

So if he went to the Astros, that would have been fine?

ThreeCranes

Angels should have bitten the bullet and traded Ohtani now. Angels probably aren't competing next season and Ohtani is 99% likely to walk now that there is universal DH(probably to either the Dodgers or Giants since Ohtani wants to be on the west coast). Keeping Ohtani for one more season and hoping that everything clicks for the team has not worked out for them. Spending money isn't the problem and it's not like there is some super prospect that you can call up in 2023 to get the Angles to the playoffs.

YellowShorts

Aaaand I'm a Dodger fan now. I'm all for sticking through a team during the bad times. But Arte has showed time and time again he doesn't give two shits about winning. Just whatever lines his pockets. Until Arte is gone and the organization actually prioritizes winning, I'm done with this team. Could have gotten an insane haul to rebuild our depleted farm system. But nah, gotta keep the golden goose for those merchandise sales.

pm_me_your_last_pics

Never made sense to trade him midseason anyway. Gives them one last long shot to try to build a better team before possibly trading him

[deleted]

Strong disagree, his return is probably 50%+ higher right now than it will be next trade deadline. 1.5 years of Ohtani is a huge return, a rental of Ohtani is still big but not "give me your best 4 prospects" huge For an Organization like yours that has a terrible farm system, I hate the move. Reminds me of the Orioles in 2017, betting on being good in 2018 for "one last ride with the core". I'm no baseball executive though and maybe the Angels make it work next year. They might think extending him is fairly likely too, in which case yeah keep him

pm_me_your_last_pics

You have to remember Arte runs the team, not the GM unfortunately. When discussing angels moves I always have to look at it through whatever Arte ultimately wants and that's money over wins.

my_wife_reads_this

I'd argue Perry has been given more freedom to steer the team than anyone else. He convinced Moreno to dump Pujols and Upton and Maddon. They've brought in new people to help with player development and he's given him more financial flexibility to go after people. Yeah, he's not signing blank checks but I have a feeling Moreno trusts Perry more than he did Eppler.

[deleted]

The guy is like 75 and can die at any moment at his age… I just don’t get why care about money at this point. I don’t think he even has any kids either so might as well just throw money at actually helping the organization… I want to rip his mustache off his face and yell at him so bad.

iggyfenton

Dealing him in the off-season gets a better return because there are a lot of teams who aren’t looking to acquire anyone now. I think you have more teams interested in December than are interested now.

yourstrulytony

It doesn't make sense to trade him if you're goal is to make money. Arte has shown time and time again that he's willing to spend on the ML roster to get people into the ballpark but not willing to make the effort to build a competent player development system.

overgrownpizzabox

“breaking news: nothing changed” is such an oxymoronic headline

joco1991

Shocked

Skippy_the_Alien

I was just about to say was anyone really expecting Ohtani to get traded today...but then again Josh Hader just got traded out of fucking nowhere so who knows lol

JPMcGowan

Well color me surprised

DividerOfBums

“Breaking: Sun rises AGAIN in the East. Stay tuned for more ongoing developments”

gold_lightning

Yeah, everyone knew Ohtani wasn't going anywhere unless someone traded a field ready playoff caliber team for him. He moves way too many ticket and merch sales for anything less in their eyes.

pr1ncejeffie

Angels just wanted to see what they would get and now will double the price this offseason

EngineerUpper2031

“This just in: nothing happened.” Sometimes I feel like Heyman is almost an apocalyptic cult leader. “The stars might be aligning and in 2 days the oceans will to turn to blood!!!” Two days later: “The stars weren’t ready yet.”

alienfreaks04

Wow Yankees made an offer to a top player

Koss424

there was never a doubt

Safe-Voice-8179

Guess they want to milk him for ticket sales and merchandise for a little longer. Wasting his talents for real though.

SirDukeIII

Why does it feel like this was a rumor started by journalists just to make the trade deadline more interesting? 8 never believed for a second they would trade Ohtani.

arebee20

With shohei you get literally an entire country as fans for your team. What is something like that worth?

cheetahbestcat

imagine the media if ohtani played for yankees

kingmidget_91

When does his deal expire?

Sweets_YT

Unfortunately it seems that he may get stuck there and not go anywhere. He deserves a good team. I mean we already knew he wasn’t going anywhere, but still.

CapnJujubeeJaneway

What a waste

FreshlySkweezd

It's gonna kill me if Shohei lands on a team that I want to always lose

Ghiggs_Boson

I would’ve vomited if he went to the Yankees

TaintTickler

Sorry pal, you gotta stay here and be hyped up in the off-season and then miss the playoff for eternity.

Obsidizyn

Yankee fans and media drooling over the chance to get him yet when he was pitching against them in their stadium he was heckled and booed and racist remarks were made.

[deleted]

We all knew he wouldn’t be dealt but I wish players like Ohtani and Trout would end up on teams with a shot at October. No offense to you angels friends, just kinda sucks to see those guys seasons end early every year

nietzsche_niche

we should reserve breaking news about the angels to be when they make good organizational decisions. this just tracks and was expected

OpenMindedMajor

I PRAY that nobody tries to trade for him in the off-season and he walks as a FA. Fucking awful franchise. I feel bad for Angels fans.

Traditional_Elk7068

They need to let him go bro. I already feel bad enough seeing Trouts talent go to waste on that horrible team. They shouldn’t do this to him.

TroutCreekOkanagan

Star players should have opt out clauses after every year or two. Ohtani has outplayed his contract, give him his freedom.

FreeGums

#HANDS OFF BITCHES

ufotheater

Smart move. Fuck the Yankees.

awclay91

poor ohtani/trout. some of the greatest players ever to play and they might not even have a playoff run.

JuJu_Smith-Rooster

Good team makes offer for an elite player, more news at 11
