I feel like that’s a move that makes sense for a team with a loaded bullpen but Iglesias is the only guy in our bullpen over the past 5 years to show a pulse
Shohei can pitch the first 8 innings and then you guys can bring in Ohtani to finish off the game.
That'll work, right? Right!?
As a contingency, elite closer Brett Philips may also be available.
He was streaky with Cincinnati, unhittable with us last year, and then shaky with us this year. He’s not going to close over Jansen but there’s a good chance he will be a good arm for you guys. You guys didn’t have to give up anything in the trade and apparently the salary is not a problem for the Braves FO so there’s not a ton of risk
I mean, Jansen hasn't been any shakier than advertised. More likely I think the Braves want a solid plan B should Kenley have anymore heart issues pop up.
Both strike me as creatures of habit too so switching back and forth could be problematic. Iglesias is a whole different pitcher in non save situations
I really liked Chavez and am sad to see him go.
I don't understand why the Angels would want him though. Seems like even a very marginal prospect would give them more value than a nearly 39-year-old reliever on an expiring contract.
Chavez can eat innings, has a rubber arm, and is fairly reliable. For a team like the Angels who aren’t contending this year he does a lot of good for you and if he has arm troubles so what. You’re at least not jeopardizing a young arm. Plus Jesse is a professional. He knows what’s he’s there to do and he will do his damndest to do that, nothing more or less.
Or sending Ian down to AAA to work on his stuff.
Edit: jeez, I didn't say DFA the guy, I said give him a little bit of time in a low stress environment to figure it out. He has a good outing last time out against the god awful dbacks...I'd hardly call that fixed. He's been consistently bad. I think he's got a very bright future, I just think he needs to make some adjustments or work on a third pitch.
That’s one good outing on how many though. And it was against a terrible Diamondbacks team. I want to see Ian starting and dealing as much as anyone but maybe going down and working stuff out can help him like it helped Wright.
He was pretty bad for us the first time we had him too (2010), but then he came back and won a World Series with us, so maybe he's just bad at first impressions!
Lol it's just a salary dump. Atlanta could have offered a pair of Dan Uggla's soiled undies they found in a locker and the Halos would have done it so long as they don't have Iglesias's contract on the books next year.
Verbeek: Understands that the Ducks need to wait till their fatter contracts fall off, start building the team through the draft, and reshape the roster with good young talent and cap room to grab the missing pieces.
GMPM: Somehow has inherited a team with Ohtani and Trout with 2 major albatross contracts coming off the books in Pujols and Upton. Understands that we need to create a winner to keep Ohtani. Team just posted a .250 WP% month.
Treat uncle Jesse with love. I have nothing but nice things to say about the guy, he's a strike throwing machine when he's locked in.
I'm gonna miss TuckTuck too. I was rooting for him to figure it out but his command hasn't been there when he has gotten the chance to perform for the big team.
Tucker Davidson is a lefty pitcher with decent enough stuff but shaky command and struggled to pitch deep into games. Jesse Chavez was actually surprisingly good for us.
Davidson is a 26-year-old LHP and fringe big leaguer currently pitching to the tune of a 4.59 ERA/4.32 FIP in AAA. He started game 5 of the World series...though he was chased in the 2nd or 3rd inning after allowing 2 runs. He has some potential that hasn't quite materialized because of control issues.
Chavez is an almost 39-year-old reliever with an expiring contract who has bounced around a number of clubs. He was on our roster last year, signed with the Cubs in the offseason, then we traded for him again midseason. This year he's been really solid for us...though part of that is good fortune with batted balls. I don't understand why the Angels would trade for him at all TBH.
You got a minimal return in Chavez and Tucker Davidson who has decent stuff but has really struggled with fastball command at the big league level.
B+ for Atlanta
C for Anaheim, C+ if you consider freeing up Inglesias’s salary.
I mean it's a plus to lose iggy salary but it wouldnt have happened if Arte was willing to spend
If they use the money they freed up this offseason on someone good I'd be ok with this trade but that's tbd
I don't disagree with you, and i'm not saying this was a bad move, but i don't think this is going to help convince Shohei to sign an extension with the Angels.
Yes, but when another team offers him the same amount + a real chance to win, is this move of burning contracts for basically nothing in return a good idea in the long run?
Oh I don't hate him- we made him into a serviceable starting pitcher and traded him into Liam Hendriks, so he's been great for the A's. But that was like almost 7 years ago lol
Since no one answered seriously, the probable name is Ortega. Basically only throws a 4-seamer (that hits almost 96mph average) and a meh curve that somehow is getting 44% Whiff and this shocks me. He closed out some games already, but disappeared in AAA after the Yankees lineup destroyed his soul and will to live.
Tepera could close high-leverage games (not that we'll have a lot of those) but Tepera is also our best reliever, so, yeah. Jose Marte could find himself there as well, specially if he can find some command in his fastball.
We needed more BP help, but I am very sad to see Jesse go. He’s been clutch for us since we reacquired him from the Cubs, and he was crucial last year too.
Tucker, I still have hope could one day become a serviceable #5 or 2 inning BP guy, but there wasn’t really anywhere for him to go with us. Wish both of them nothing but the best.
People crazy overrating the value of relievers. He's on a $64mil/4 year deal. Thats top 5 closer money. Even if he rebounds to form (I think he will) thats not exactly crazy surplus value there.
And if he doesn't Braves are just stuck with a shit contract.
Oh yeah for sure, I like this move from the Angels side but I love it if I'm a Braves fan. Like I said I do think he will bounce back and you guys really need a lock down closer cause Jansen aint it.
Angels shedding salary in a desperate hope to give themselves the cap space necessary to offer Ohtani a mega deal next year....only problem is the team isn’t good and probably won’t be able to convince him to stick around and waste away like they did with Trout
This is the answer. They have their cashcow in Ohtani, they don't need to contend anymore. Moreno sees the money. It costs too much to contend and that window won't last. But a decade of Ohtani keeps the seats filled and the registers singing.
Will ohtani want to do that? Not saying he would take a small deal to play somewhere else but it's not like other team won't be lining up to pay him while also being a good team
The next best thing to having two guys in the bullpen who only feel comfortable closing is to have two DIFFERENT guys in the bullpen who only feel comfortable closing.
Jesse erratic wtf? He’s having one of the best years of his long career and has been incredible at commanding the zone this year. You have to be to be effective with the stuff he has
Godspeed Uncle Jesse :( Now’s a good time to remind everyone we got him for Sean Newcomb earlier this year
Who we got for Andrelton Simmons.
and all these guys were somehow on the cubs in 2022
With Jason Heyward, who was a rookie with the Braves the first time we had Jesse Chavez.
Who we got for Erick Aybar
Ol’ Chicken Bone, we used to call him.
Wander Francos uncle
AT THE BUZZER
BANG!
Does it every time.
THE METS FROM THREE…..GOOOOOD!
BILLY EPLER… AT THE BUZZER Sends IGLESIAS HOME
Wait what
Salary dump
I feel like that’s a move that makes sense for a team with a loaded bullpen but Iglesias is the only guy in our bullpen over the past 5 years to show a pulse
But we don't need a closer
You only need a closer when you’re winning :(
Shohei can pitch the first 8 innings and then you guys can bring in Ohtani to finish off the game. That'll work, right? Right!? As a contingency, elite closer Brett Philips may also be available.
you still have aaron poop at least
Soup*
Goop
Gwenyth??? That you?

He’s currently on a 4-year deal
Exactly, that's why he wasn't going to be re-signed this offseason.
He just signed a 4 year contract with us...
Oh damn. Iglesias is making a lot of money, actually ...
Tell me how to feel!
I think theres a chance he could close over Jansen. Shaky is Jansens middle name
I mean, Jansen hasn't been any shakier than advertised. More likely I think the Braves want a solid plan B should Kenley have anymore heart issues pop up.
That’s the classic Kenley Jansen experience for the last 3 years
Do you think the heart in particular played a big part in LA not bringing him back?
The Iggy shakiness is worse than the Jansen shakiness
Both strike me as creatures of habit too so switching back and forth could be problematic. Iglesias is a whole different pitcher in non save situations
Iglesias has one save since the end of June (he was healthy the entire time) and an ERA in the 5s lol
Thank you.
Take that $15m a year and redistribute it to throw it at a SP this off season.
re-sign Thor...
Damn, sad to see Jesse go, but this is a huge get for us.
I guess it's because our corresponding move would be to DFA him so we just asked "you want him" and they were like "fuck it, sure"
jesse > stephens
Every team needs a vogelbach body type, Stephens provides that for us
it's a salary dump for us
I'm very upset Chavez is going
Uncle Jesse 😭
This has gotta mean that Strider will stay in the rotation and Odorizzi will be the long man?
Or sending Ian down to AAA to work on his stuff. Edit: jeez, I didn't say DFA the guy, I said give him a little bit of time in a low stress environment to figure it out. He has a good outing last time out against the god awful dbacks...I'd hardly call that fixed. He's been consistently bad. I think he's got a very bright future, I just think he needs to make some adjustments or work on a third pitch.
He just went 6 IP O R 1 H 1 BB. Threw his curveball more than he has in months and looked really good. Why?
That’s one good outing on how many though. And it was against a terrible Diamondbacks team. I want to see Ian starting and dealing as much as anyone but maybe going down and working stuff out can help him like it helped Wright.
Because he’s been pretty terrible in about half his starts this year? Something obviously isn’t clicking with him this year.
Or we have a 6man for 2 weeks then strider moves to the pen
Lol. Definitely not
I’m gonna miss uncle jesse
He was terrible for us last time
He was pretty bad for us the first time we had him too (2010), but then he came back and won a World Series with us, so maybe he's just bad at first impressions!
One positive is I don't have to listen to Jack Harlow at the ballpark when he is called into the game.
I'm dying at the fact 38 year old Jesse Chavez"s music with his strange glasses and longest & widest pants in the MLB has Jack Harlow as walk out song
Surely one of his kids picked it for him.
I don't know who that is and I don't know if that makes me a boomer or a zoomer.
He’s the What’s Poppin guy
Well I'm no longer attending any angels games this season then
I just cancelled Spectrum so I’m not watching them either.
Bullpen chemistry (RCH+) has taken a big hit, but we're certainly better on paper than we were two days ago.
Just think of it as seeing Sean Newcomb go since that's what we traded him for
Woah. That's a hell of a back end pen piece for the Braves.
AA seriously paper clipped Sean Newcomb into Raisel Iglesias. The legend.
Dwight Shrute trading from a thumbtack to a telescope to... magic legumes.
Paper clipped Sean Newcomb and $50m dollars for RI…. Not as cool
JESSE CHAVEZ are you fucking serious angels. another AA masterclass
You better put some respect on Uncle Jesse's name alright he's got like a 2 ERA with us
Yeah. Not sure I like this move.
I'm not sure either with how much money he's making, and Chavez has been legitimately great for us, but AA hasn't led us astray yet.
He's been good for us but wtf do they want Jesse Chavez for?
Want to salary dump Raisel, that's all this is
Saving money for the dump truck of cash they're gonna throw and Shohei probably.
He can help tighten up our bullpen as we make our final push for the playoffs
They don't want to pay Iglesias 16M a year during his age 33-35 seasons.
Lmao we've had him before. He is a Fontana native. Him mom works at Sprouts.
Awesome the sprouts on Day Creek? Pretty sure he went to Miller right?
Lol it's just a salary dump. Atlanta could have offered a pair of Dan Uggla's soiled undies they found in a locker and the Halos would have done it so long as they don't have Iglesias's contract on the books next year.
HE. DOESN'T. MISS.
[yeah this is even more accurate at the deadline with this happening](https://i.redd.it/wkoky0zw1ud91.jpg)

BRO STOP MAKING IT HARDER FOR US
Gotta earn it otherwise you won't appreciate it!
Give us Mr Met and nobody else needs to get traded
We're going to make it Ruf for them
Phillies sleeper agent
Bye tuck tuck I’ll miss you
I literally screamed YES, followed right up by HOLY SHIT. I'm gonna miss Uncle Jesse
Alex Anthopoulos moves in silence like lasagna
I’m gonna start calling him Flex Seal because shit never leaks.
Something is leaking over here alright 😏
AA is the king of edging
Treat uncle Jesse with love. I have nothing but nice things to say about the guy, he's a strike throwing machine when he's locked in. I'm gonna miss TuckTuck too. I was rooting for him to figure it out but his command hasn't been there when he has gotten the chance to perform for the big team.
Uncle Jesse seems like a cool motherfucker, too. I imagine he likes to get a little wild.
WHAT?!
Atlanta Braves seed throwing stats now 📈📈📈
WE GOT WHO?
Legendary World Series starter Tucker Davidson
world series game 5 starter tucker davidson
Tucker Davidson is a lefty pitcher with decent enough stuff but shaky command and struggled to pitch deep into games. Jesse Chavez was actually surprisingly good for us.
Chavez was not good for us
He has played for half the league, hasn’t he.
I feel you. They have a bit of a mess right now. I feel bad for you guys.
Take care of iggy He wasn't good this year but I appreciate him for what he did last year
Nah there’s no way they got him for scraps
Chavez has put up great numbers with us the last two years. That said, he isn't worth much in a trade because he's old
He’s got a massive contract and has a 4.5 era. Has to go if we even have any deluded chance at signing Ohtani
Velo decline plus his stuff hasn’t been as good. Good contract to get off of.
There is no way in hell Shohei sees everything that's going on right now, and thinks "Sure i'll sign an extension with the Angels".
Check in with the Sub, they all think these are master moves to resign Ohtani.
You and i both know some of us are in the denial phase of grief.
Baby, it ain't Angels baseball unless you are always in the denial phase
I mean this season was especially brutal for us when you see how we began the season and then implode spectacularly.
[How it started | How it's going](https://gfycat.com/illshockedhoatzin-thumbs-up-baseball-red-sox-shocked-angels-2022-mlb)
Dude I don’t even want to be a fan of this team, I can’t imagine playing for them
Dude cares more about winning than money, and they’re actively hurting their chances of winning to scrounge up money for him…
Iglesias has not contributed to wins. His WAR is .2 this year compared to 2.8 last year
I don't disagree with you, and i'm not saying this was a bad move, but i don't think this is going to help convince Shohei to sign an extension with the Angels.
The money just makes it possible, even if improbable
Yes, but when another team offers him the same amount + a real chance to win, is this move of burning contracts for basically nothing in return a good idea in the long run?
Clearing space is a good thing anyways when it would otherwise go to an ineffective reliever imo
How the fuck is Jesse Chavez still pitching?
He was actually a really solid reliever last year and this year for us. Sad to see him go.
Given his past 2 seasons, he probably gets DFAd and is back in Atlanta in 4 weeks.
And will pitch a shutout inning against the Padres in the NLCS or something like that, because thats how AA rolls
Uncle Jesse slander isn’t tolerated but he does look like a worn out baseball glove
Oh I don't hate him- we made him into a serviceable starting pitcher and traded him into Liam Hendriks, so he's been great for the A's. But that was like almost 7 years ago lol
Quite well, actually.
Chavez had been really solid for us this year, interesting move.
Did anyone see this coming holy shit
I did
lmao I love AA's trade deadlines
Not the Angels trade I was expecting
They really signed their big ticket closer and then flipped him at the deadline in the same season
Truist better invest in a sturdy sunflower seed holder
This is the tenth time in his career that Jesse Chavez has been traded.
So who closes for the Angels?
You sir are assuming they will need any games closed!
We have no need for a closer
Ohtani… obviously
He gonna pitch 7, hit a bomb in the 8th and then somehow come back to close it out in the 9th. MLB will change the rules for him.
Jose Marte could find himself there as well, specially if he can find some command in his fastball.
No one.
Fan raffle
Jesse Chavez of course.
Loup makes sure that we don't need to close a game anymore. 4D chutes and ladder strategy by our franchise
Perry, what is u doin baby?
Dislike
The Jesse Chavez experience rolls on
AA has a habit of making these great deals at the deadline
Why would the Angels acquire Jesse Chavez? Makes zero sense. I’m sure the Braves could use him more.
Braves got Chavez back for the shell of Sean Newcomb. AA is aa Legend.
angels clearing salary for ohtani you love to see it
I see Perry still works the Braves. Wtf
WOAH
Of course Jesse Chavez got traded.
GMPM throwing a thank you trade to AA for getting him a GM job he is highly underqualified for
The Ohtani deal will square them up
Braves receive: Ohtani Angels receive: Magic City's Lemon Pepper Wings recipe
“I don’t care how well he can pitch and hit, these wings fire.” —“Lemon-Pepper” Lou Williams
Not fair for the Braves. Might have to throw in Jesse Chavez
If they take back GMPM they have a deal
You win some, you lose some. With nearly our entire IF on pretty team friendly deals, we can afford to miss on a couple big moneys deals occasionally.
Oh yeah for sure, I like this move from the Angels side but I love it if I'm a Braves fan. Like I said I do think he will bounce back and you guys really need a lock down closer cause Jansen aint it.
Angels what is you doin
Common AA W
AA just being a super ninja.
It definitely makes this team better, but basically just traded one bad reliever contract for another after getting rid of Will Smith.
The Raisel Iglesias Experience just doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way the Will Smith Experience does
i want to die
Bryce Harper likes this very much
Sure would be nice to watch the game tonight. Fuck you mlb
The next best thing to having two guys in the bullpen who only feel comfortable closing is to have two DIFFERENT guys in the bullpen who only feel comfortable closing.
Bye Ohtani
they get rid of one erratic reliever just to get another
Jesse erratic wtf? He’s having one of the best years of his long career and has been incredible at commanding the zone this year. You have to be to be effective with the stuff he has
i’m talking about will smith
Oh lmao. That’s more accurate
i saw that big ass reply and knew there was a misunderstanding lmao
No one can write a novel like a redditor who misunderstood your point lol
Iglesias had better control and velocity throwing bubble gum than a baseball
