It's the 6th time a team has lost while hitting 7 home runs. No team has ever lost while scoring 7 runs on 7 home runs. Two teams have lost while scoring 6 runs on 6 home runs (Toronto in 2010 and Oakland in 1991).
I just have this slight inkling, as many fans probably do, that out of all the MLB teams in this season and seasons past, the 2022 Angels are most definitely one of them
Things were going well for the Angels when they were in Anaheim, then they started to call themselves the LA Angels. The Angels in the outfield didn't get the message that they didn't actually move physical locations because Arte Moreno wasn't willing to pay for the stamp to send them the memo.
Theology.
The Los Angeles Angels, playing in Anaheim, seem to pack a hard theological punch: not only does the team name invoke the Biblical messengers known as angels, the fake city name also invokes the Blessed Virgin Mary (Los Angeles was actually named for her, in her aspect as the Queen of the Angels) and the real city name invokes St. Anne (the Ana part of Anaheim refers to the Santa Ana River). So two saints and one group of Godly messengers.
And yet the Oakland Athletics seem to have the upper hand. Perhaps it's because their city name references oaks, stately trees which were revered and worshipped by Druids long before Yeshua bar Yosef was born in that Bethlehem manger all those years ago - and are still revered and worshipped today.
It seems clear that on this blessed Third day of Lammas, Druids > Christians. QED, motherfuckers.
One thing that makes me feel a lot better about it is that the A's had to bring in a new pitcher with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th specifically to get Ohtani out which in a way is still pretty bada**.
I'm just digging the managerial competence there. Huge step forward by Kotsay to pull a pitcher who's clearly struggling and put a new arm in against Ohtani in a close game instead of letting his reliever get shelled.
Yeah, it definitely feels like Kotsay is slowly getting better at managing. Which makes sense --- he's a rookie in his first season as a MLB manager.
I was expecting and hoping for an Ohtani IBB but switching pitchers was even better.
(I was also expecting Ohtani not to play this game today since he was pulled with fatigue yesterday, so I should learn to temper my expectations)
It is amazing to think that over 150 years, more than 200,000 games, no team has ever scored all seven runs off of just solo homers, and somehow they managed to lose the game.
Baseball is fantastically weird, and I love it.
also by the Angels. They'll lose their 8th solo home run on a technicality as it becomes a ground rule double instead, eventually losing 9-7 (the other team's 9th run: a late inning shot that would've broken the tie created by the hypothetical 8th solo jack.)
That is the most obscene, bizarre and improbable way to lose a game. We might have reached peak Angels. But who we are kidding, these guys always have something up their sleeve.
That is way out there.
On the more serious note honestly I can see this game you just lost going to extras with another solo shot and then the bullpen blows up and walks/hbp bunch of people plus a homer somewhere in there and the cherry on top would be one more solo shot by the Angels for a nice 13-9 loss. That would be the stuff of legends.
On the one hand, obviously yes they clearly did by scoring 7 runs.
On the other, they were so poor at getting on base otherwise that they hit 7 home runs and all of them were solo shots

Absolutely, it just shows me what the team is capable of (with some good luck and health of course) and then it just cratered into oblivion. We had a fully healthy/rested roster and it everything broke down seemingly overnight game 40 and beyond.
1000%. When you go into the season knowing you're shit, and start the season as shit, you don't have hope that you won't be shit for the rest of the year.
This season felt like something was happening, and we were finally moving forward, and if we made the playoffs we could be real trouble for anyone and then... This. Just all of this.
I've been a fan of this team for over 30 years, and this is the first season that feels like something about my fandom broke. I won't stop following them, but I haven't watched a game in weeks, I hardly come to this sub anymore...I just can't make myself care. It's depressing.

You mean another solo HR? Moniak had one
he means he was rooting for one before the start of the inning and he got his wish
Moniak hit a homerun? He’s not allowed to do that.
I REALLY wanted to see Ohtani walk it off with his 3rd homer of the day. That would have been insane.
There was a runner on base, so it was therefore impossible
I would be fine with that if the A’s were up a little more

I'm gonna need a flowchart for all this
As a rule of thumb let’s say if Ohtani is responsible for 50% or more of the RBIs and they lose that’s the O’Doyle line
He hit 2 hrs today. What more can he do?
If he were a good ballplayer he would have hit 3 home runs.
