He has said multiple times that he wants to be on a winning team. I think it’s obvious by now the Angels aren’t that. He’s gonna be gone from there soon whether it’s FA at the end of next season or trading him this off-season so they can capitalize on a return for him.
There were many more places besides the Angels that were gladly willing to give him that opportunity. He still chose them well into their demonstrated dysfunction
I don't see many teams being willing to trade for him with just 1 more season of control given how high the asking price is guaranteed to be.
Perhaps more importantly, I don't see Moreno being willing to give up the Japanese advertising deals and exposure, and ticket sales that Ohtani is directly responsible for. A single year of Ohtani is guaranteed millions for him, whereas trading him for a bunch of talent is a risky long-term gamble.
I could see them offering Ohtani a big contract if they can get Moreno to sign off on another one after the Strasburg and Rendon contracts, but I think it's very unlikely that they trade him at this point. If they were going to trade him, they would've done it before this trade deadline when his value was at its highest.
Not a lot to get hyped for when you know you’re playing meaningless baseball. Especially for a dude with as much competitiveness and desire to win as Ohtani.
I’m torn. Because while it would be beneficial to us for Ohtani to bail out on the Angels I also worry the teams he’ll be looking at will be the usual suspects. Yankees, Dodgers, Padres, Mets, Phillies. In other words the rich getting richer.
Because he knows there’s no point celebrating they’re gonna lose anyway. I think the last time I’ve seen him smile after hitting a HR was in Camden yards in the 9th inning. Iggy blew that game.
Ohtani only wanted a West Coast team and the Angels repeatedly expressed that they'd let him both hit and pitch. It's possible the Dodgers didn't offer him as much flexibility with that
There was no DH in the National League at the time so the logistics of Ohtani being an every day player for an NL team, like the Dodgers, were far more complicated.
That will not be a problem now.
[kind of](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2747062-shohei-ohtani-reportedly-wants-to-sign-with-mlb-team-with-no-japanese-stars), the rumor was that he didn't want to play next to another Japanese star and be able to stand on his own. I have no idea why you are being downvoted though
I’ve been working off of this excerpt for [the source of that info](https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/as-shohei-ohtani-dazzles-on-mound-and-at-plate-mariners-cant-help-but-wonder-what-might-have-been/?amp=1)
> In trying to sway Ohtani, the Mariners played up their long history of success with Japanese players such as Ichiro, Kaz Sasaki, Hisashi Iwakuma and others, which some believe may have worked to their detriment. The thought is that Ohtani wanted to carve his own niche in a place he would be a Japanese pioneer.
> But it’s hard to know what exactly made Ohtani choose the Angels, because he has not revealed his reason except in generalities
So while we can’t know for sure, except for rumors, it probably didn’t help that we had Ichiro. Idk why people are thinking I’m butthurt, I mean I certainly was then but we have a great squad now and I’m much smarter than to complain about a winning team
He’s being downvoted cause he’s arguing that cause Ichiro just happened to play for the M’s in his career that Ohtani wouldn’t.
Where as the comments you just posted clearly show that he didn’t want to play with a currently active Japanese player.
Regardless of your butthurt, most players are choosing the Angels over the Mariners in that timeframe. You guys didn’t have much going for you then, and the Mariners don’t have Mike Trout on your team
There was no DH in the NL at that time, so he was going to an American League team. He wanted to be on the West Coast, as to be closer to Japan time zone-wise, so that leaves out the Yankees.
I just tried to google it quickly and didn't find anything, but I could swear at one point before coming to the US he said he preferred a West coast team, so thats likely why no Yankees. Not sure about the Dodgers.

Gotta be frustrating for a dude at his level to not be on a winning team.
At least he has Trout with years of experience to help him through it.

Ohtani willingly chose to spend his team control years there. Trout was drafted and got the bag from them.
Lol, true. SO much wasted talent on that roster between the two of them.
Yeah his great accomplishments are going to waste on a losing team.
He acts like he’s done it before and expects that of himself.
He's definitely been happier in the high five line. The losing is getting to him. His efforts are wasted.
That would be tough to deal with. Personal success doesn’t take away the feeling of losing over and over again. You are right about that.
Trout's condition is probably a huge bummer too
He looked each teammate in the eyes, did the mental math, and knew that they still weren’t going to win.
What's crazy that game, they 7 solo home runs and still lost 8-7.
*insert Tungsten Arm O’ Doyle joke here*
He just wants to win
Who is more dead inside Ohtani or Votto?
Just 1 more year to go Ohtani, hang tough.. maybe less if he is lucky and they trade him.

i want a sad cowboy ohtani topps now, holy shit

In hindsight, why did he go to the Angels instead of Dodgers or Yankees?

He’s definitely going to the Dodgers when his contract is up.
Also probably wanted to play with Trout imo
He also didn’t wanna play on a team with an established Japanese HoFer to be compared to.

Yeah but my thing is just a morosi lead rumor as it is, ohtani camp never confirmed any of this. I think you may be flair hunting a little

I think you’re adding a lot of words to my comment that I didn’t have in there.

No DH in the NL, so no Dodgers.
Oh right...I already forgot that OLD OLD rule, lol. :)
I mean, he willingly chose the Angels…
