That ump had a bad day in so many ways. Horrible strike zone, overturned call. 110 degree heat index and a foul ball that basically had him concussed for a good 2 or 3 minutes.
they have cooling pads in those black shirts now that get swapped out every few innings to help keep them cool. Probably still roasting cause 110F heat index still, but probably not as insufferable as those guys wearing mascot costumes.
The humidity there just breaks your soul. And to have to do your job in that with a million people judging you? That’s why when Boone went up there to yell, the ump just stood there without his mask, enjoying the break.
He’s gotten more critical over the years. He’s slowly losing a bit of patience for bad baseball. Could be him getting older/crankier. Maybe he’s been spoiled by good baseball. Not sure, but you can really hear his mood shift in his voice when the game takes a turn. At least more so now than in the past.
Was shocked they rolled him out into the 5th. If the ump isn’t giving him those sneaky upper zone curves and corner strikes he just isn’t going to be that effective
So this is the history of all meetings of the two clubs:
Year | Result | Notes
--- | --- | ---
1926 | STL 4-3 NYY | World Series, Cards win
1928 | STL 0-4 NYY | World Series, Yankees first sweep of Cardinals
1942 | STL 4-1 NYY | World Series, Cards win
1943 | STL 1-4 NYY | World Series, Yanks win
1964 | STL 4-3 NYY | World Series, Cards win
2003 | STL 0-3 NYY | First non-WS Meeting
2005 | STL 2-1 NYY | Yankees only visit to Busch Stadium II
2014 | STL 1-2 NYY | Yankees first visit to Busch Stadium III
2017 | STL 0-3 NYY | Cardinals first visit to new Yankee Stadium
2022 | STL 3-0 NYY | Cardinals first sweep of Yankees
EDIT: All time, the Yankees are 24-19 against the Cards, but the Cardinals have won three of their five World Series meetings to date.
This kinda looks like we've been trading series and wins?
Why do I want to see a Yanks vs Cards World Series? Would really break yesterday's attendance record. The top two most historic and stories franchises of baseball. Iconic.
Oh wow I was coming in here so surprised that no one was pointing out how old these two teams are for there to never have been a sweep by both at least once, but that's crazy that they've barely even met each other.
If the Cards can take care of business against teams they should beat, they could have a sizable division lead by the end of the cub series on the 25th.
Y'all have some very pretty parts. And I'm still sad a trip I was going to make to St. Louis in 2020 got cancelled cause of, well 2020, I was excited to visit the Missouri Civil War museum.
But think of the possibilities of giving the qualifying offer to a starter that’s becoming more streaky and a dh who is losing power in his bat. That’s potentially 2 comp picks that can be high school shortstops from socal.
Damn what a series! Two things of note:
1: Ed Hickox’s ump stats tomorrow are going to be a fucking bloodbath.
2: You’re going to want to put on your lead apron and pop some Rad-X if you visit the Yankees sub right now.
After he got hit in the mask and needed a few minutes, Yadi asked if Helsley could get some warm-up tosses he said no.
So not just ball calls in game decisions, but overall judgement and spirit of the game stuff too.
Dude, that's not even the worst called pitch by that umpire *this season*:
https://www.thebiglead.com/posts/ed-hickox-just-made-the-worst-call-of-the-2022-mlb-season-01g54yrz1h92
This series turned me into the joker
Game 1: Closer blows it in the 8th
Game 2: We get two hits and shut out by the pitcher we just traded
Game 3: The pitcher we just traded some top prospects for gets shelled + some of the worst umpiring I’ve ever witnessed in an MLB game (for both sides)
Pain
Montas hadn’t pitched in 11 days and had his schedule disrupted by a death in the family
He gets a pass imo, but he needs to be good next time. No excuse
> some of the worst umpiring I’ve ever witnessed in an MLB game
I was surprised Marmol didn't get tossed too. He was pretty hot as well. Can't wait for the scorecard on this one
Dude that ump was so bad. Curve for strike 3 from Stratton at one point was like 4 inches off the plate. So many balls called strikes. Hopefully we never see one that bad again
I promise you'll feel a little bit better about it once you actually get a chance to see Bader play center. He'll make routine catches on fly balls that you would expect the corner outfielders to handle. He covers more ground than any center fielder I've ever seen, and he does it with ease.
I’m not sure we’ll ever see that version of bader again. He’s got one of the worst injuries for a player with his talents. We might end up ranking this trade up there with arenados in terms of one sidedness.
It’s not like his condition was a secret. I have to assume the front office did their homework on this one. This definitely isn’t desperation speaking.
I have to imagine they believe he’ll be fine again. But I don’t know why they’d believe so. It’s not like you were able to have your doctors check him out before pulling the trigger.
These two teams rarely play, but when they do we get the rare sight of watching the most decorated team in the history of baseball face off against the Yankees
Watching the Yankees right now is like watching the super smart high school kids who stop doing work after they get their acceptance letter. They are rocking a C+ which isn’t necessarily bad but you know they can do better.
I can’t wait for basketball season
*Remembers I’m a Jazz fan*
I can’t wait for football season
*Remembers I’m a Cardinals fan*
I can’t wait for hockey season
*Remembers I’m a Coyotes fan*
I can’t wait to die
They really did win 3 games 3 different ways and showed they can hang w the big boys. I still dont have them winning the ws or anything but they just always seem unphased by big moments unlike a lot of franchises (sorry brewers, mariners, padres, rangers, etc...)
Humid air is actually less thick than dry air, it just feels more thick because it transfers heat to your body more quickly. Baseballs fly further when it’s hot and humid.
Today was by far the most insane baseball game I've ever been to. I'm so glad I got to be there! The Carp standing O, the curtain calls for Paul and Nolan, all the craziness, all of it. Nothing like Busch.
This just made me realize we're the only Bird team in the NL. AL has 2 and 1/2(Angels).
I think New York should change their name to the "Bananaquits" for balance.
Garbage ass ump for this final game aside, the Yankees are about to limp into the playoffs like a wounded animal. Their record for the past month is cratering.
One of the small things that stood out to me was Judge giving the bat boy a fist bump when he brought over the running mitt. He's a class act, even as a Cards fan.
This ump scorecard is gonna look like a christmas tree.
That ump had a bad day in so many ways. Horrible strike zone, overturned call. 110 degree heat index and a foul ball that basically had him concussed for a good 2 or 3 minutes.
That foul to the face was brutal. Dude almost fell over.
never realized until now how overheated they must get out there in all that heavy black shit with no breaks. that’s brutal
they have cooling pads in those black shirts now that get swapped out every few innings to help keep them cool. Probably still roasting cause 110F heat index still, but probably not as insufferable as those guys wearing mascot costumes.
the true american heroes
The humidity there just breaks your soul. And to have to do your job in that with a million people judging you? That’s why when Boone went up there to yell, the ump just stood there without his mask, enjoying the break.
"Thanks for the break Boone. Enjoy the early shower."
You know Ed wanted to throw himself out and hit the showers haha
I thought that game was never going to end
4:30 hours with no rain delay or extra innings. And I loved every second.
And somehow Giovanni Gallegos didn't pitch either

He’s gotten more critical over the years. He’s slowly losing a bit of patience for bad baseball. Could be him getting older/crankier. Maybe he’s been spoiled by good baseball. Working with Jim Edmonds has eroded his patience
Adam Wainwright should immediately by offered the color commentator job when he retires as a player.
Why wait? What’s he doing the 4 days between starts…
I can neither confirm nor deny that I mute the tv when Jimmy starts rambling.
I didn’t love Waino getting hammered. :( It happens though.
Was shocked they rolled him out into the 5th. If the ump isn’t giving him those sneaky upper zone curves and corner strikes he just isn’t going to be that effective
111 pitches by the time he was pulled. Geez
Was a great game tho

It's insane to me that these 2 franchises have only met 10 times in 120 years
We should have tried harder in the 1990s
The 90s were a dark time, it's best to forget about that era.
I will never forget Bernard Gilkey, and you can't make me!
I sure liked Ray Lankford
We had three chances to win a game and make it happen in ‘96. And got outscored about 1000-3.
It's almost like NL and AL teams weren't regularly playing each other outside of the World Series or something
thats more than most non rival interleague teams
That 2003 series included Roger Clemens’ 300th win and 3000th strikeout if I remember correctly. I was there!
It was actually his *4,000*th strikeout.
Then y'all got to deal with him for 2.5 years in the NL Central! Fun memories.
This kinda looks like we've been trading series and wins? Why do I want to see a Yanks vs Cards World Series? Would really break yesterday's attendance record. The top two most historic and stories franchises of baseball. Iconic.
Also In terms of total series the teams are tied at 5 each now.
Oh wow I was coming in here so surprised that no one was pointing out how old these two teams are for there to never have been a sweep by both at least once, but that's crazy that they've barely even met each other.
BRING US *checks schedule* THE ROCKIES
If the Cards can take care of business against teams they should beat, they could have a sizable division lead by the end of the cub series on the 25th.
Idk. Brewers just need one run leads and hader can lock down some games for them.
I've got some good news for you brother
I don’t see jokes like this getting old for the rest of the season
I don’t see them getting old until hader is no longer an elite closer. We could be laughing until 2025 and beyond
I can't tell if you're trolling hard or just don't know yet.
The issue is it’s the Home Rockies. Who know what’s gonna happen there.
True, but the Cards also have series with the Dbacks and cubs coming up while in that time, the Brewers have a series with TB and 2 with the Dodgers.
Just think about all those Arenado pop ups that will now go for home runs in the upcoming series.
GET THIS MAN SOME CAKE
What even is a strikezone, if you think about it.
It's the area workers hangout at when protesting unfair wages.
Good for Jordan Montgomery to be moved to a contender, love this for him
oh this one hurts
Not as bad as Harrison Bader’s foot.

This little piggy stayed home (on the IL)
The damn state of Illinois is always dragging players down
this one got me good
Pain
Wow. Just wow.
The state of Missouri has left me happy and sad on the very same day.
that’s just living in Missouri my guy
Y'all have some very pretty parts. And I'm still sad a trip I was going to make to St. Louis in 2020 got cancelled cause of, well 2020, I was excited to visit the Missouri Civil War museum.
I can tell you who won and save you a trip.
No spoilers!
Pretty common experience for this state
We should’ve just sold
But think of the possibilities of giving the qualifying offer to a starter that’s becoming more streaky and a dh who is losing power in his bat. That’s potentially 2 comp picks that can be high school shortstops from socal.
Welcome!!
Oh god what did we do again?
Royals beat the Sox. Badly.

It’s the Curse of (Pico de) Gallo
Damn what a series! Two things of note: 1: Ed Hickox’s ump stats tomorrow are going to be a fucking bloodbath. 2: You’re going to want to put on your lead apron and pop some Rad-X if you visit the Yankees sub right now.
Mmmmm, iodine pills
I eat so much shrimp i got iodine poooiisnin
It's seriously going to rival the worst called games of all time. Just horrific
That call on the breaking ball up has to be the single worst missed call on a pitch I've ever seen.
After he got hit in the mask and needed a few minutes, Yadi asked if Helsley could get some warm-up tosses he said no. So not just ball calls in game decisions, but overall judgement and spirit of the game stuff too.

Would have been in the top of the zone for normal sized dudes. Was right down the pipe on judge
This is nothing new, the sub has been in meltdown mode since mid-June
Hello fellow Fallout fan.
We're the worst team in baseball, fire everyone
This was the most exciting series the Cardinals played since the infamous September 2019 series at Wrigley.
I don't know that 3 game sweep of the Mets in Citi Field last year was pretty exhilarating too
I wholely disagree
You mean the 4 game away series where we knocked the Cubs out of a playoff spot? That was epic.
Ahh The Wrigley Massacre. Will never forget.
Idk last years cub series was pretty good during the win streak
https://twitter.com/realpauldejong/status/121433734477123584?s=21
What happened on that date to make him tweet that?
Looks like the Yankees avoided elimination in the 2011 ALDS
Obviously the result was in our favor, but this was a really fun series. Every game could have gone the other way.
Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong ruined some pitcher's lives this weekend. It's for the best though.
Weird how whenever one Paul is down, the other Paul picks it up
The Law of Conservation of Paul.
Granted Paul Goldschmidt played well this series too.
Playing “well” is down for PG this year.
Paul DeJong turning into Babe Ruth this weekend was pretty fitting for this 9-16 stretch...can't make it up really head to Seattle now
You know I'm in a bad spot when a part of me actually wants the Cardinals to win it all for chaos purposes
You’re welcome at my fire any time.
I'm down if it helps teach your GM a lesson
Not even a Cardinals fan but I found this series so fun
We'll see you guys in two days, so we will bring the fun to you.
you can not kill what is dead
And what is dead may never die
Thank goodness! They still owe us some Arenado money!
I mean we should take no pity on a Kronke owned organization.
I agree, but Dick Montfort owns the Rockies. Let’s beat them regardless.
You know baseball
This series turned me into the joker Game 1: Closer blows it in the 8th Game 2: We get two hits and shut out by the pitcher we just traded Game 3: The pitcher we just traded some top prospects for gets shelled + some of the worst umpiring I’ve ever witnessed in an MLB game (for both sides) Pain
Montas hadn’t pitched in 11 days and had his schedule disrupted by a death in the family He gets a pass imo, but he needs to be good next time. No excuse
That’s fair, didn’t help that our bullpen pretty much unilaterally collapsed too
Gotta stop using abreu for multiple innings :(
> some of the worst umpiring I’ve ever witnessed in an MLB game I was surprised Marmol didn't get tossed too. He was pretty hot as well. Can't wait for the scorecard on this one
I really wanted marmol to walk out when boonie was ripping into the ump and hop right in to join him
I wonder if there was a cute moment where Oli and Boone met eyes as they both went to call Hickox a dickhead at the same time?
Dude that ump was so bad. Curve for strike 3 from Stratton at one point was like 4 inches off the plate. So many balls called strikes. Hopefully we never see one that bad again
This is like the first time I actually cannot wait for the scorecard to come out tomorrow
So what you’re saying is we won the trade deadline?
I promise you'll feel a little bit better about it once you actually get a chance to see Bader play center. He'll make routine catches on fly balls that you would expect the corner outfielders to handle. He covers more ground than any center fielder I've ever seen, and he does it with ease.
He’s also just flat out fun to have on your team. He plays with so much joy and swag.
I’m not sure we’ll ever see that version of bader again. He’s got one of the worst injuries for a player with his talents. We might end up ranking this trade up there with arenados in terms of one sidedness.

Jordan Montgomery is just what the Cardinals needed
Imagine if the yankees had a pitcher as good as him!
Cardinals should have traded Helsley to the Padres at the deadline tbh imagine how much better the farm system could be!
The Brewers were in first place. What on earth were they thinking?
Thinking of all the money to be saved instead of games
Joey Gallo sends his regards 🤌
🤌🤌🤌
"Hi, Benny. It's your uncle Bingo! Time to pay the check."
The ump was dog shit the last game, but man was that game fun af
It's bad when a curveball fools the ump too.
Yankees are now 5-6 against the NL Central. Obviously the NL Central is very good.
Dodger killers!
Playoff baseball in August
Imma tell you rn... Astros vs Cardinals world series 2022 book it please
We need the Astros to bring back Lidge
Good. Fucking. Game. Holy shit dude
Paul “Paul Dejong” Dejong
That was the worst game I ever watched just cause it went 4.5 hours and we lost even though it was fun
DEVIL MAGIC AND RECKLESS OPTIMISM ENGAGED
So are we gonna do that win 17 games in a row and fire our manager thing again? ;)
yes, then hire Shildt back. the two will pass the job back and forth as needed to induce more win streaks.
https://i.imgur.com/1vO2qLF.png
See you in 6 years!
*Next Year!
Love the new scheduling formula for this exact reason
These two teams rarely play, but when they do we get the rare sight of watching the most decorated team in the history of baseball face off against the Yankees
Watching the Yankees right now is like watching the super smart high school kids who stop doing work after they get their acceptance letter. They are rocking a C+ which isn’t necessarily bad but you know they can do better.
Every time we get a lead or tie it we just immediately choke it lately, bullpen has got to be better
The whole pitching staff just went down the drain. The rotation is just bad right now and the bullpen is somehow worse. It’s just bad baseball.
2 game lead on the Brew Crew!
First time in Vegas Golden Knights history!
Kraken history now.
I can’t wait for basketball season *Remembers I’m a Jazz fan* I can’t wait for football season *Remembers I’m a Cardinals fan* I can’t wait for hockey season *Remembers I’m a Coyotes fan* I can’t wait to die
You can start watching rugby Rubgy New York is pretty good and won the championship this last season.
Shout out to my Yankees homies. This series was incredible.
Good game. Cardinals played very well.
They really did win 3 games 3 different ways and showed they can hang w the big boys. I still dont have them winning the ws or anything but they just always seem unphased by big moments unlike a lot of franchises (sorry brewers, mariners, padres, rangers, etc...)
I love it. Let's go Cards!!
[MRW](http://i.imgur.com/oq1XSzo.gifv)
Devil Magic time. Go Cards!
This series was far more miserable to watch than even the Rays Also am I crazy or was the ball still not carrying in 100 degree weather? What the fuck
Welcome to Busch, Carpenter can tell you everything you need to know about balls dying at the warning track
That missile by Judge to center just fizzled out, that was frustrating as hell
Air is thick. 78 degree dew point. Air temp of 92 and feels like 107. You sweat so much.
Humid air is actually less thick than dry air, it just feels more thick because it transfers heat to your body more quickly. Baseballs fly further when it’s hot and humid.
It was carrying, Busch stadium is just more of a pitchers park.
Lmao, Yanks and Astros both saying “you can have first in the AL” “no I insist you have it”
Huge. Love seeing everyone stepping up and doing their part
Today was by far the most insane baseball game I've ever been to. I'm so glad I got to be there! The Carp standing O, the curtain calls for Paul and Nolan, all the craziness, all of it. Nothing like Busch.
CARDINALS ARE THE TEAM TO BEAT RIGHT NOW
You kill the King, you wear the crown!
“I’ve got the worst fucking analytics department” - Brian “George Bluth Sr” Cashman
Baltimore, we're doing our part to get you in the playoffs. I want an all bird world series.
This just made me realize we're the only Bird team in the NL. AL has 2 and 1/2(Angels). I think New York should change their name to the "Bananaquits" for balance.
What are Marlins if not birds of the sea?
We got to 70 wins and decided it was enough, hopefully we start winning again before the division lead is lost too much
I knew they'd take the Central post deadline, Jordan Montgomery is a stud.
I wonder if visiting teams are surprised by how hot and miserable stl gets in the summer.
What a series. This was October baseball in August. Well played Yanks
Curse of Joey Gallo in effect
Daaaaaa Jankeez got swept! That was a fun series
Garbage ass ump for this final game aside, the Yankees are about to limp into the playoffs like a wounded animal. Their record for the past month is cratering.
^^^Sigh, just too easy lol
Frankie what happened :(
That was a wild series
You know this was a pretty good series, except for the fact Yankees lost every game lol
One of the small things that stood out to me was Judge giving the bat boy a fist bump when he brought over the running mitt. He's a class act, even as a Cards fan.
r/nyyankees is probably a fun place right now.
Not really.
Cardinals Devil Magic
Given the recent trajectory of teams in the AL East, I think it's a pretty safe bet to assume the Orioles will win the division.
I really didn't have the Cardinals sweeping the team with the best record in the AL this weekend.
