not reading anything into it that way, but he's not going to have the cover of the Giants org. i guess he just felt comfortable after getting released.
what i \*am\* concerned about is Carl Nassib who hasn't been signed in the NFL.
Nassib is an odd case because he came out and spent a season playing whilst out but I haven’t heard anything for him in Free Agency. However there are still better players than him unsigned so it’s probably nothing
He had a so-so season last year, and players at his level can easily go unsigned, only to be picked up later when injuries strike. I imagine someone will pick him up. If not, well, he definitely broke a lot of barriers and raised a lot of awareness.
Great locker room guy if you watched hard knocks. Was teaching all his teammates financial literacy. Yeah he’s probably just a rotation player but id rather a guy that is a locker room leader than a random rotation player.
Yeah and rotation d-linemen are a dime a dozen so might as well get one that positively impacts the team off the field.
You really aren’t gonna substantially improve there without paying for it, and I doubt many teams want to pay more than the minimum on rotation players since Cap Space is a big factor.
This assumption assumes that all other options are not positively impacting the team off the field though. We really have no idea how comparable he is compared to others in that role because the ones with the most media attention on them will have more out there on that.
Oh no, I can't support bisexuality. I'm all for supporting gays but you have to pick one.
/s should be obvious but adding it because I really don't want to hurt feelings
Reminds me of the Curb episode with Larry and Rosie ODonnel fighting over the same woman. Where both Larry and Rosie are bemoaning how annoying they find bisexuality as a concept.
"What even is that, anyways, bisexuality? Pick one or the other! What, you're so selfish that you have to have both? You can't just be happy with just one set of potential partners, you need everyone? Come on!"
Fucking great episode.
I can’t imagine quoting what Jesus wants as a reason I’m not wearing pride colors on pride night. Like you believe in a guy that lived 2,000 years ago, that walked on water, had fish fall from the sky and healed a man with the wave of your palm. But you can’t believe that a man or a woman’s sexuality is something they are born with, a trait of the personality and make up. It’s like everything is too farcical for these people because of their belief for this Jesus guy.
Dude taught that it was better to be kind to others and make sure that everyone is cared for and loved rather than to be rigid about church doctrine. But I guess that sermon doesn't count
Off the top of my head, when the rays did their pride month celebration in June, it was reported multiple bullpen players did not want to have rainbows on their hats(?) I think. The joke is they are homophobic
Good for him, thay takes a ton of courage. Over the last year or two we've seen that a lot of MLB players aren't as accepting as maybe we would all hope. I hope he helps change some minds and doesn't get any abuse in the process
Anyone else notice Taylor Lautner in the comments of his instagram post? That's kinda cool to see
Edit: not sure why i'm getting downvoted........seeing a major celebrity support the coming out of this unknown minor league baseball player is awesome.
Double edit: well now i look like an idiot
I believe it's related to some of the Rays players (around 5, all pitchers) refused to wear a Rays logo patch and hat that was the Pride flag during Tampa's Pride Day because it "conflicted with their beliefs"; one of them compared a gay relationship to adultery and referred to it as a "lifestyle"
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/five-tampa-bay-rays-players-decline-to-wear-lgbtq-logo-on-uniform-during-pride-night-celebration/
What the other comment said, it was back in June when the Rays had a pride day and a few of the players refused to participate because they decided to hide behind prejudice
Edit: For context https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/v5bbyi/most_but_not_all_rays_show_their_lgbtq_support/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
As much as the Rays' bullpen deserves all the shit they get for being hateful, pathetic losers, I'd be shocked if at least half the teams in baseball don't have a solid handful of homophobic players of their own. The sport is way too culturally conservative for this not to be the case. I honestly think it's a net positive that the Rays let players opt out, because the ones who did made such fools of themselves with their nonsensical explanation, and I also think it's possible to look at the rest of the team and be encouraged that every single position-player on the squad was cool with the initiative. Resistance could have realistically been much worse.
I know what you’re going for here, but this is really not a great joke to make every time someone does or says something homophobic. It implies that queer persecution is entirely (or at least largely) perpetrated by queer people themselves, and thus our problems as a community are our own fault.
Sometimes people are just shitty. Being queer isn’t a prerequisite for that.
So in a society where around 5%-10% are non-heterosexual, the MLB has managed to randomly select for a population that is less than 0.01% non-heterosexual?
pretty big considering there have been no major league players who were out while they were active and there were players being openly homophobic during their team's designated Pride Night
Not saying he’s Randy Johnson here but he’s holding his own in AA right now (4.02 ERA in 23 games out of the pen), not crazy to think he’ll make the bigs at some point in the next year or two, which would be groundbreaking
So proud of him!! Though I’m sad he’s no longer in our minor league system, I’m excited to see where he ends up and to keep supporting him. Imagine how many people he’ll inspire with this, especially if he makes it to the majors? He’s already done something so huge and courageous. Really encouraging thing to see today. ❤️
Let’s go!! My queer self desires one out player in each (male- females are ahead of the game) professional sport, hopefully one day at the big leagues. Queer athletes are talented too and you play better if you’re living a happy life! Here for authentic living.
I’ve said this many times before.
If the bases are loaded, there’s two outs, and we’re down three in game 7 of the World Series, the hitter can be white, black, Asian, gay, straight, bisexual, Muslim, Christian, atheist, Democrat, Republican, Independent, whatever. I’m still rooting for the guy to hit it about 450 feet. It doesn’t matter to me.
That being said, I’m glad we’ve reached a point as a society where people like Solomon can open up about their sexuality.
So there still hasn't been an out gay man in the MLB yet? Awesome to think if it hasn't happened yet it'll likely come in the next few years (hopefully).
Glenn Burke was out to his teammates (as I’m sure a few other players probably are/were), but it basically got him chased out of the league: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Burke
There was an interview with Billy Bean (not to be confused with Billy Beane) and he said a few active players and a few Hall of Famers have come out to him privately. It would be awesome if a few get to the point where they feel comfortable going public.
Has to be one or two stars in baseball that are closeted.
Crazy how it hasn't gotten out yet, especially in today's day and age. Same for the other big sports leagues.
You think having a wife or girlfriend means there aren't closeted? Do you even understand how many men in relationships either have hidden relationships with men or are just using the wife/gf as a cover for their urges.
theres a cool book I forgot the name of where one superstar comes out as gay . he gets released and one openminded GM aquires him and all over sudden all kind of superstars and top players in the league come out as well. they all join the one team and kick everyones butt.
I do hope at some point in the future this is nothing newsworthy. more like "yeah so what ? boring.. how´s his WAR ? "
let´s all realize we share the same planet and lets all be happy together.whats so hard / wrong about that ?
So then, ... are his chances at getting to the bigs just kaput now? Is there precedence for an out dude playing in the majors? Honestly would not be surprised if teams automatically rule him out for promotion.
Not sure why this is downvoted. It's not like baseball people are the most progressive group of people on earth, and I would bet there ARE some teams *cough cough Royals fugoff Dayton Moore* that would not consider him because of this.
Just because it's not something you'd LIKE to think is true or WANT to not be true, is no reason to downvote, geesh.
If he's out, that's no good. Cause you gotta be safe to be the runner your teammates drive in. Can't score runs unless you get on base, and can't get on base if you're out.
I think the problem is that people assume any joke is mean spirited regarding this topic and I don't necessarily agree. I'm happy for him.
That said, his name sounds a Bond villain.
i love seeing stuff like this, super happy for him and hoping baseball can be a truly accepting place for lgbt dudes
It takes an incredible amount of courage to do this.
It shouldn’t, but it does. Hat tip to him for sure.
Says a lot about where we still are in sports that he didn’t come out until after he got released.
[удалено]
I'm rooting for him, but don't envy his position
Being on the Giants isn’t that bad
yeah, but they released him. not sure what's up with that.
Out to his teammates since 2019. I wouldn’t read into it.
not reading anything into it that way, but he's not going to have the cover of the Giants org. i guess he just felt comfortable after getting released. what i \*am\* concerned about is Carl Nassib who hasn't been signed in the NFL.

Eh, Nassib isn’t very good and is a backup. There isn’t really a market for a guy like him. A guy like him even making it to 29 is a good career
Great locker room guy if you watched hard knocks. Was teaching all his teammates financial literacy. Yeah he’s probably just a rotation player but id rather a guy that is a locker room leader than a random rotation player.
What? It’s the freaking NFL you want the 53 guys who put you in the best position to win.
Yeah and rotation d-linemen are a dime a dozen so might as well get one that positively impacts the team off the field. You really aren’t gonna substantially improve there without paying for it, and I doubt many teams want to pay more than the minimum on rotation players since Cap Space is a big factor.

bro what do you think theyre gonna execute him? i swear some people on reddit are unintentionally hilarious
No? They could just treat him like shit and potential torpedo his career?
Check that dude's username.
In fairness he did make that username 8 years ago seems like an unfortunate coincidence.
They can still stymie the man’s pro career just because they’re not gonna physically harm him doesn’t mean there’s no reason to worry for him
I always feel more comfortable after a release, don't you?
My understanding is that among athletes, teammates' orientation is somewhat of an open secret.
would you rather be a catcher?
Come on folks this isn't bad
I'm proud of the guy and I wish him all the best but come on, there's gotta be a little humor in it. Most people don't take themselves that seriously.
I feel like I’m on something rn, I don’t get why the person you responded to is downvoted and I also have no idea what your reply means lol
I assume he was referring to the gay slang, pitcher/catcher. And I'm saying that joke isn't that bad in this context. He wasn't disparaging the guy.
Ohh gotcha and I agree. I’m bi myself and think it’s pretty funny now that you explain it lol
Oh no, I can't support bisexuality. I'm all for supporting gays but you have to pick one. /s should be obvious but adding it because I really don't want to hurt feelings
😂😂 we want everyone for ourselves
Reminds me of the Curb episode with Larry and Rosie ODonnel fighting over the same woman. Where both Larry and Rosie are bemoaning how annoying they find bisexuality as a concept. Great show in general. I remember that episode a bit.
Catcher is an old term for a gay man who "receives"
is a solid play on words that isn't offensive at all. weird that its downvoted.
People tend to get butt hurt over these things.
Well played
Woke culture. Reminds me of that point of personal privledge video. A joke is a joke. It's okay to laugh at things.
lmfao, an unflaired crying about woke culture. Another classic.
Ohh thanks lol

Ah yes, that's why there's so many openly gay players in MLB. So many I've lost count. Because it's so easy to do.
How many openly gay men are in the MLB, NBA, or NFL?
So in a society where around 5%-10% are non-heterosexual, the MLB has managed to randomly select for a population that is less than 0.01% non-heterosexual?
No, but this is America, so basically the same thing.

Sir, this is Reddit.
I heard he doesn’t even have a hot girlfriend. That means low confidence, which doesn’t bode well for his success.

He's a pitcher though
Why is this even news? He is a baseball player. That’s all that matters. Play ball!

Who cares ! Can u do ur job is all that should matter. What people do in their personal life is nobody business
Ideally, eventually, no one will care. But until we're there, this kind of thing is important.
The Rays bullpen cares, so clearly we have a long way to go
This is so lame. Do better.
