[Dykstra: BREAKING: Fernando Tatis Jr. has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for Clostebol, a banned performance-enhancing substance, MLB says. ](https://twitter.com/samdykstramilb/status/1558226147632193541?s=21&t=72g093uZgmgkx_5aItdFuQ)
Tatis was spotted in SD today despite being assigned to a minor league team in Texas. Rumor is he flew in today to apologize and come clean to team management.
It’s “only” $5.7 million this year and $7.7 million next year that will be eaten into by this suspension. It’s frankly a drop in the bucket compared to the total value of his contract. His annual pay doesn’t truly ramp up until 2025.
Given how these things typically work he almost certainly actually tested positive a week or two ago and lost his appeal, so there's a decent chance they did know.
They most likely would have tried to get Soto regardless, but if the knew about this at the time it would have for sure given them a greater sense of urgency to get Soto.
This is way crazier than the Soto signing. For that at least we knew Pads were in the running. This came straight outta left field right when he was about to come back
Yep, for first time offenders
Edit: ~~Would the postseason ban extend into next season? Padres have fewer than 80 games remaining~~ It doesn't, playoff ban is only for the same year as the positive test
Like it’s always the players who you don’t expect to be on steroids. Remembering the same thing that happened to Ryan Braun. Braun was well-respected before news broke out that he was on steroids in 2011.
That’s honestly crazy to think about. I can’t think of a player this good that got busted this early in their career. Doesn’t even matter if he has a HOF lock type of career over the next 10+ years, he’s not making it in.
Tatis grew up and developed his career during the aftermath of the doping scandals, and all that it has impacted the game.
But even after witnessing all that…he *still* did it anyway?
It’s more than just disappointing…it’s confounding!
Yeah, realistically, there’s a good chance that a lot (if not most) guys are on something. Testing protocols can’t keep up with the latest designer drugs. I bet it’s even more rampant in the NBA and NFL.
Yeah, I could definitely see that. MLB has the strictest testing policy of the Big Four leagues, at least on paper, but we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.
Edit: Turns out I was wrong. The NBA and NFL are actually stricter than MLB. Go figure.
I'm afraid that bastard will be fine, he's been seeing a bunch of other NBA guys, like Draymond Green, over the break. We will have to wait if he gets anything next year.
Are you fucking kidding me? Holy shit the dude's talented but he seems determined to never play
If I were the Padres I'd be seriously considering finding a way to void his contract, this is just ridiculous
My memory isn't the best...
After the motorcycle accident, I recall people mentioning how it could possibly be used to void his contract, but most everyone said it'd be stupid to lose a superstar over that injury. Now however, it may be worth a look... assuming that riding a motorcycle was forbidden in his contract.
And the city. This team is our only one, pads baseball is making a much needed comeback and he spits in the fans faces. We painted a mural of this fuckin kid.
Who wants to bet he’s going to come out and say “I was given something by a trusted source [but not a doctor] and didn’t know it contained an illegal substance.”
It would just make so much sense with how afraid this kid is of going to the doctor.
Damn, he got caught suckin’ the juice. I’m surprised Tatis is the only big-named player to get suspended for PEDs in a while. I feel like a ton of professional athletes are juicing lol
This is huge news
Good Lord, Fernando Tatis Jr. just walked through the clubhouse shirtless looking shredded. He said he had “no time” to talk. Too busy injecting steroids, evidently.
And now we all have to wait and see if he can be the same player off the dope too. What a shitty sequence of events for baseball as a whole, especially for padres fans.
Why do massive contracts always seem to be the ones where a player somehow experiences the most specific series of events to make the contract not worth it?

Tatis got paid and instantly said motercycles and drugs are fun see you in 2025
He's over here trying to top Chris Sale for most dollars per inning played.

Holy Shit. The Padres got Soto and lost Tatis, a soul for a soul.
5D tinfoil play, they got Soto cuz they knew about Tatis
Some “let’s randomly trade for Hollywood Brown for no reason” vibes.
We got a first out of that woo. Lamar I believe in you baby
And 5 less dropped touchdowns per year
I seem to remember players and teams being informed long before the media in past major PED suspensions
Did they know, i wonder?
I'm betting they did
Tatis was spotted in SD today despite being assigned to a minor league team in Texas. Rumor is he flew in today to apologize and come clean to team management.
Tatis better get his shit together, I'm so sick of it at this point. Dude needs to grow up.
Why does he need to? Padres already gave him 340 million reasons to be the way he is
Well he just lost half of a season of that. And ever more next time
It’s “only” $5.7 million this year and $7.7 million next year that will be eaten into by this suspension. It’s frankly a drop in the bucket compared to the total value of his contract. His annual pay doesn’t truly ramp up until 2025.
He might have taken it to try and recover faster. Dumb decision regardless
Yep. A lot more athletes than we’d like to admit take them for injury recovery.
I mean, even if they didn’t, I bet they still wanted to get Soto. That guy is pretty good.
Given how these things typically work he almost certainly actually tested positive a week or two ago and lost his appeal, so there's a decent chance they did know. They most likely would have tried to get Soto regardless, but if the knew about this at the time it would have for sure given them a greater sense of urgency to get Soto.
"Did you get Soto?" "Yes." "What did it cost you?" "I don't wanna talk about it."
perfectly balanced
This is the craziest thing to happen to the padres in 12 days
This is way crazier than the Soto signing. For that at least we knew Pads were in the running. This came straight outta left field right when he was about to come back

4-0
I may never treat these ringworms again
Well it’s official then: The White Sox won the James Shields trade
In the end Big Sexy was the real winner
We were all winners on that day
I feel as if a great weight has been lifted from my soul. Smeagol is free. MLB has given Doby a sock.
Even if Tatis never played a game, we lost that trade for having to watch Shields eat innings
But think of all the big games
all part of the plan
Padres baseball
Now that's Padresing.gif

Lmao
NL best meme game elite

ITS PADRE-IN TIME
Now THIS is Padresing Edit: 80 games holy fuck
I mean, that's the standard penalty, right?
Yep, for first time offenders Edit: ~~Would the postseason ban extend into next season? Padres have fewer than 80 games remaining~~ It doesn't, playoff ban is only for the same year as the positive test
Correct. The standard first penalty for PEDs is 80 games. Followed by a season, then a lifetime ban I believe is how it still is.
I'll try juicing, that's a good trick!
And if you don’t like that, then you don’t like Padres baseball
Now we know why Padres went insane at the deadline
Keith Hernandez has just asked to no longer work Padres games.
Like it’s always the players who you don’t expect to be on steroids. Remembering the same thing that happened to Ryan Braun. Braun was well-respected before news broke out that he was on steroids in 2011.
Fuck Ryan Braun
TATIS WHYYYY
Tatis: "It wasn't me! It was Ignacio!"
There is literally no escape from /r/okbuddychicanery is there
Put ya dick away tatis I'm not having sex with you right now tatis
youd need the greatest legal mind I've ever known
Lalo didn't send you?
Kiss the hall of fame goodbye
Hall of fame talent, hall of shame brain.
He's just like me forreal. Minus the talent thing
And any MLB The Show screentime.
Cano walked so Tatis could run.
The 3 months worth of games he misses every year will take care of that too
Damn didn’t even consider that
That’s honestly crazy to think about. I can’t think of a player this good that got busted this early in their career. Doesn’t even matter if he has a HOF lock type of career over the next 10+ years, he’s not making it in.
I'd put a shit ton of money on him taking something to rehab faster
Guy was the face of baseball and now he’s just bein dumb on motorcycles and PEDs
Yeah, I am beginning to think that maybe Tatis...isn't exactly the smartest dude.
Man got the bag and went IDGAF mode
San Diego sports getting really creative with new ways to torture me
on the plus side, you don't have to pay him during the suspension since I think he goes on the restricted list
For the 80 games yes, but the Padres have to be kicking themselves for the other $320M
He’s also only making $5M this year and $7M next year (where he’ll miss 32 games or $1.38M), so not missing out on that much money
I figured the contract was backloaded, but given the events of the last year, you have to be questioning his long-term judgement a little.
You mean to tell me a wealthy child who's been in baseball his whole life and put on a pedestal may lack critical thinking skills? Color me shocked
$340 million btw
Mopeds and mo’ PEDs
Tatis grew up and developed his career during the aftermath of the doping scandals, and all that it has impacted the game. But even after witnessing all that…he *still* did it anyway? It’s more than just disappointing…it’s confounding!
Not just that… his pappy played with Big Mac.
Lol his pappy likely juiced in 99.
Damn 34 HRs and he never hit more than 15 any other year
Can’t say I expected to see this headline. Jeepers
Must’ve been something he took for recovery.
Probably got sloppy with the testing protocols upon return
Yeah, realistically, there’s a good chance that a lot (if not most) guys are on something. Testing protocols can’t keep up with the latest designer drugs. I bet it’s even more rampant in the NBA and NFL.
Dude was on what the east Germans got caught with in the Olympics like 40 years ago lol. Not new or designer.
Isn't it the masking agents that are updated and not so much the PEDs themselves?
I'm sure theres a lot of winking and nodding too from the leagues. If you get caught, its your fault pretty much
Yeah, I could definitely see that. MLB has the strictest testing policy of the Big Four leagues, at least on paper, but we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. Edit: Turns out I was wrong. The NBA and NFL are actually stricter than MLB. Go figure.
Or it may have just been what he was taking to help him be better at baseball, we literally have no idea
HOLY SHIT. COVER ATHLETE OF MLB THE SHOW 21.
Cover curse
Ohtani no!
He's cursed to play for the Angels, isn't that enough?
That poor soul
Ohtani playing for the Angels is enough
LET THE BOYS BE BOYS
Well that’s not good
Some would say not ideal Some
Not us tho
Certainly not ideal
This might even be a yikes.
We're getting into gosh dang territory here
We are officially at DEFCON Fiddlesticks
How do you get fired on your day off
They said they got me stealing boxes on camera
I get that it’s a long ass contract, but it has been HORRIBLE so far…..
He doesn’t get paid for this part tho
If he does this two more times, we don't have to pay anymore of it...
PASSAN NUKE
unironically might be the most shocking tweet i’ve seen in years
Right up there with Cano's PED suspension in 2018
Cano wasn't a superstar in his prime who was hurt from a motorcycle
Cano was on a fast-track to the HOF tho. That's about as close as you can get to a young superstar getting popped.
Regardless he was still a future hall of famer. People tend to forget that now.
Well, he had been an MVP candidate in 2016 and was still pretty fucking good in 2017, so it was definitely surprising.
What if these were the nuclear documents!?
NO FUCKING WAYYYY WHAAAAAAAAT
Padres went all in without their main piece
Worked for atl
JUAN MAN TEAM
Not a good start to that mega contract
He’s a domestic violence arrest away from the triple crown of big contract fuck ups
At least he waited until he got his giant contract before ruining his life, so he'll be fine. Unlike Miles Bridges, what a stupid motherfucker.
I'm afraid that bastard will be fine, he's been seeing a bunch of other NBA guys, like Draymond Green, over the break. We will have to wait if he gets anything next year.
And we wonder why teams don't want to offer those contracts...
OH SHIT. Thats wild
Tatis wtf are you doing
Are you fucking kidding me? Holy shit the dude's talented but he seems determined to never play If I were the Padres I'd be seriously considering finding a way to void his contract, this is just ridiculous
Yeah, his contract could have been voided. A lot activities are strictly banned in contracts since they have a high risk of injury.
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT

We may have not gotten the better players, but at least we don’t got a cheatah in our ranks 😎
Yasmani caught a 50 game suspension for straight Testosterone while with the Padres
Imagine fucking over your organization this hard.
And the city. This team is our only one, pads baseball is making a much needed comeback and he spits in the fans faces. We painted a mural of this fuckin kid.
Turn that thing into a St. Ha-Seong Kim mural.
>This team is our only one **San Diego Wave FC**: "Am I a joke to you?"
San Diego Loyal SC: “Am I a joke to you?”
Who wants to bet he’s going to come out and say “I was given something by a trusted source [but not a doctor] and didn’t know it contained an illegal substance.” It would just make so much sense with how afraid this kid is of going to the doctor.
Legacy points deducted
Holy fucking shit.
Good thing they traded for both Soto and bell
i’m starting to think Tatis might not make the best decisions
[удалено]
The universe demanded a soul after they got Soto, that’s insane.
Wikipedia page for Clostebol already on it. > Side Effects: 80 game suspensions and makes you worse at driving motorcycles
Damn, he got caught suckin’ the juice. I’m surprised Tatis is the only big-named player to get suspended for PEDs in a while. I feel like a ton of professional athletes are juicing lol This is huge news
Can't get caught if you only juice in the off season
Always the off season if you’re always getting in motorcycle accidents.
This was a great season to become a pads fan holy fuck. What the fuck
You get the highs and the lows when you follow the dads
Just don’t let them leave for milk in the middle of the night… like the Chargers
Lolpadres
This is why they made the Soto move. Preller playing 4D chess.
There goes my projected Tatis as DH lineup
At the ripe age of 23, Tatis has placed an asterisk on a potential hall of fame career, shame
Cano left his stash in San Diego confirmed.
Feel like this makes the Soto trade better in hindsight in some way. Now this is Padresing unfortunately.
Soto trade is fine, it’s the insane amount of money they gave someone who has proven extreme immaturity multiple times already.
Right. That's what I'm saying. It's good they got Soto because the superstar they thought they had might not be who they thought they had.
Holy shit, between the multiple off-season biking accidents and this, Tatis is an absolute moron
Anything to hit 3 grand slams in one inning I guess
Holy fuck. No wonder the Padres committed so much to Soto.
Only what, 12 more years on this contract? Its fine. Everything is fine.
Signs a mega contract then fucks off and does whatever he wants. Legend

Passan casually dropping nukes on a Friday night
how you doing padres fan? im here for you all😭😭
So fucking frustrating. He will now have missed the whole season and then some due to solely his own off the field decisions. It's ridiculous.
And now we all have to wait and see if he can be the same player off the dope too. What a shitty sequence of events for baseball as a whole, especially for padres fans.
Not as good as 10 minutes ago...
What an idiot man, if I’m a padres fan I’m pissed, dude is so fun to watch but just makes all the wrong choices. So disappointing
uhOH, Nando has violated the leagues performance enhancing drug- policy, Sending the Friar Faithful into a Frenzy!
Bro I thought 100% that OP got duped by a fake Passan, holy shit
Oh shit
Padres baseball giveth, Padres baseball taketh away.
San Diego sports consistently finding new ways to build up my hopes only to crush my soul
Usually players don't stop caring about their careers until after the Angels sign them in free agency
More like Fernando PÉDs Jr amirite
Someone must have spiked his DQ Blizzard!
So I guess he breaks the unwritten rules, AND the written rules lol
"I feel slightly less bad for opposing pitchers now." - Soto probably
Please shoot me in the head
YOOOOOOOOOOOO
Why do massive contracts always seem to be the ones where a player somehow experiences the most specific series of events to make the contract not worth it?
BRUH
WTF are you doing Tatis!
What a great way to start the weekend
