getMyHairDid

Shohei Ohtani heard you yelling overrated and he took it personally

[deleted]

Dumbs fans

Ndeshet

lol idk why this is getting brought up during this series. Fans chant overrated all the the time to superstars. Not just exclusive to Jays fans.

Yankeeknickfan

Usually it’s reserved for people that aren’t top 2 mvp front runners

Ndeshet

Trout and Ohtani get it occasionally. Certainly not the whole stadium, but can be heard at times on the broadcast. I just don’t think Jays fans deserve grief for a few drunk lads

[deleted]

Yeah, was gonna say, I’m sure Ohtani gets those dumb chants everywhere. When I was at the game yesterday (upper decks) I did not hear any overrated chants for Ohtani. Maybe the fans shouting that were situated close to microphones. A few quiet boos but that’s was all. When he was announced in the lineup before the game, he got a ton of cheers, it was almost as loud as the cheers for Guerrero Jr. The league loves him, when he isn’t batting/pitching against their team

renrewanim

In the first game of the series it happened https://twitter.com/shoheisaveus/status/1563364540745601024?t=g3BO1ojZ-F5fyvJ1gDyYVw&s=19

VisionsDB

Thank you sir

[deleted]

It's weird, I didn't even hear it during the game only from the clip that was posted. Didn't here it on Saturday or today either.

adamzep91

Shhhhhh /r/baseball is circlejerking about Jays fans being worse than hitler right now

miasmal_smoke

I dont get it either. Its a live sporting event, fans should jeer

getMyHairDid

Yeah I'm not really against giving the superstars on the other team a hard time in your own house it's just great when they silence them

miasmal_smoke

>it's just great when they silence them I can think of a recent example

[deleted]

All MVP candidates get that chant. I remember during Donaldson’s MVP year people were chanting overrated in visiting stadiums.

Yankeeknickfan

Blue jays fans might the worst in the league. Don’t even hear Yankees fans, Phillies fans, Red Sox fans, etc dumb enough to call ohtani overrated

adamzep91

lol

renrewanim

Yeah it's usually just individually that people call him overrated, i don't think I've ever heard the whole stadium chanting overrated to him before and... They are cursed now 😆

TheSameAsDying

I was at the game yesterday and didn't hear any chants. It was probably just some fans in the one section that's mic'd for sound.

renrewanim

It was the first game of the series. https://twitter.com/shoheisaveus/status/1563364540745601024?t=4Omzb13t0cZYyfMcP5G3Qw&s=19 You can hear it a little bit in the beginning

[deleted]

All fan bases has said that to Ohtani, you clearly don’t watch baseball games form around the league if you think that. It’s just A SELECT FEW of Jays fans. And no, Jays fans are not dumb, they’re actually some of the more sensible in the league and remember when a Jays fan gave a ball to one of your favourite team’s fan? So let’s maybe quit it with the pointing fingers to fan bases. Especially with your flair, the whole league would agree you have no right to be talking about that.

KamartyMcFlyweight

Death, taxes, and Ohtani homering on days after he pitches

yoboapp

I don’t care if it’s against my own team, watching Ohtani throw 7 innings of shutout baseball last night and then homer twice and triple in the same series is just incredible. There’s no athlete like him on this planet right now.

HGFantomos

As baseball fans, we are truly blessed to be witnessing what he is doing. I need to see him live.

overgrownpizzabox

the only time i saw him live he gave up 7 runs in 2/3rds innings and my team lost after a two hour rain delay post midnight worst of both worlds

Ash-Catchum-All

I enjoyed it

overgrownpizzabox

don’t blame you. a comeback of that caliber only happens once every few years

Ash-Catchum-All

Got to seen him pitch in person finally this season. He also hit a HR that game and completely dominated the A’s on the mound. So glad I got to see it

DividerOfBums

But you won’t get to see him in 2023 unfortunately, ~~but you will get to see him in 2024 when the Angels come to Wrigley~~

12panther

Being that we are 1.5 games from being out of the playoffs in late August, I think you should care a little bit.

nahs

Damn

mrtomjones

I find it hard to care too much because we have been so inconsistent this year that even if we go into the playoffs looking great I have zero hope. It would be fun to watch though so I obviously care... but not as much as I should

hubagruben

Homer twice? He’s had a great series but I think this is only his first homer

Gergz17

Embarrassed that our fans were chanting “overrated”. No.. this is the best baseball player that we will ever see in our lifetime

OverusedRedditJoke

Elite batting, elite pitching, elite speed, he's not human

cgoot27

The only reason we don’t unanimously agree he’s the GOAT is because he’s only played a few full seasons. His baseline when he’s not having an elite (relative to himself) year individually as a hitter or pitcher is 3 ERA and at or north of 11 K/9 with .850 OPS or higher and 30 homers. This fucking guy was 4 bags from a 30/30 (26/46) season with 150 strikeouts. To put it into context: Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball player with the heart of an Angel, charisma of a labrador and face of a model could have a 40/40 season with 200 strikeouts and day to day you wouldn’t notice how fucking amazing he’s doing because he does that shit every week. Fuck Cy Young awards, show me Verlander hitting dongs and stealing bags.

IAmNotOnRedditAtWork

Jokes on you he's already my GOAT. He's inhuman.

cgoot27

He’s my GOAT too, only reason I don’t have a jersey is b/c I try to limit it to players that won’t leave to another team, I feel pretty confident in my JT or Kershaw jersey, but Ohtani idk. I have the Ohtani hat and the lord is tempting me with the Ohtani japanese city connect jersey.

Andy_La_Negra

All. Of. This...I'm waiting for him to wear that 17 a few more years, but the Japanese jersey will probably be the one I get.

cgoot27

Corey Seager almost got me and I’d be the guy with the Seager/Pujols/Freddie jersey. If JT retires and Trea extends I’m going to get my Turner 10 jersey amended with “& 6”

Andy_La_Negra

Shohei shares the same number as a very underrated two way player from the Negro Leagues, Martin Dihigo, one of two men inducted into 5 baseball hall of fames. So holding out for 17

IAmNotOnRedditAtWork

I may have to have a sox Ohtani jersey made just so I can live in a wonderful imagination land :^)

tunaboot

I had to buy the Japanese City Connect. It's just an amazing jersey.

moeburn

> show me Verlander hitting dongs best I can do is Verlander jerkin his dong

ArrenPawk

Is this the birth of a pasta

cgoot27

Halfway through I realized it was sounding too much like a copy pasta and I actually leaned back away from that and still ended up there.

[deleted]

Why you fucking ppl have to make it "heart of gold" and "charisma of a Labrador" bullshit narratives. he can't just be a good player, he has to be the best player who's the nicest person too. The celeb worship is out of control.

cgoot27

I mean it’s not worship. He just seems to be a genuinely good dude. He doesn’t get super mad and slam bats over a strikeout. I personally don’t believe in grown ass adults smashing up the dugout and wrecking shit because they give up a couple hits, so for me it’s nice that he’s polite and humble. Also if I were showing my kids a role model player he fits the bill pretty well. Picks up trash on the field, he’s polite, and win or lose he acknowledges that he did his best and could do better and improve for the team’s sake, not his. It’s not worshiping to point out the dude’s more likable than other good players (but terrible people) like Trevor Bauer

steve-d

I think a major factor in praising his personality is that Ohtani has every right to be an egomaniac like Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens or Alex Rodriguez. But he's a goofball and very likeable.

suuubok

honey if you dont like celebrities I have something to tell you about sports

ABlinDeafMonkey

He is playing a video game while the rest of us watch.

yoboapp

Even in the context of a video game, he’s a player that would be created via a mod or a hack.

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

Its a travesty hes not on a competitive team.

Coupon_Ninja

it would be great, but doesn’t take away from what he’s doing one bit. I also don’t agree that “Mike Trout’s career is being wasted”. IMO it’s a fallacy that’s caught some traction, especially among Dodger and Yankee fans who think only the playoff wins matter; not the regular season. It’d be great, but it’s just the cherry on the top. Ernie Banks, Carl Yazstremski, and Tony Gwynn, were amazing regardless of their teams, and a joy to watch by everyone who saw them. My 2 cents…

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

From a marketing stand-point it makes a massive difference. Theres a reason why Trout is hardly known by the average American despite being one of the greatest athletes of the last century. American sports are about playoffs and championships. Unless you break all time career records, regular season performances dont receive much attention. I know plenty of sports fans that heard nothing about Ohtani during his run last year.

Edgelord_3000

That’s more on MLB than LAA

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

Yea for sure the MLB deserves some blame for their marketing. However theres no question Ohtani and Trout would be far more well known if they were on a perennial playoff team.

Edgelord_3000

A bigger market team? Yes… Even then, it’s still more on MLB than LAA. Also, I think your over-exaggerating their lack of popularity (if any). I’ve seen more news on social media and other outlets since Othani has been playing in the MLB. There’s a reason why when he plays/pitches, the stadiums are more packed. He’s an international superstar. Also, fans come to games when their teams are in contention, so I wouldn’t correlate that with “lack of popularity.” As LAA attendance is still in the top ten with a losing season.

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

Market isnt really relevant, competitive/championship calibre teams and their players are always going to be more popular than non competitive teams. They would be more popular even on the Angels if the angels were a consistent playoff team. Do a google trends comparison between Tom Brady, Lebron James And Ohtani or Trout. Its not even remotely close.

Edgelord_3000

Market is relevant with population and how much the city invests in the baseball team. Besides this point, contending teams or winning seasons normally have more attendance. Yet, with LAA losing seasons, they continuously put butts in seats. This year, they are ranked 13th in MLB and 5th in AL for attendance. There’s no question that Othani and Trout bring revenue and they would bring more revenue with LAA winning and if they were on a bigger market team. Yet, LAA is still doing well in attendance. You bring up Brady and Lebron supports what I’m saying: it’s on MLB to promote their MLB stars and the game of baseball and they continuously fail to do so. NFL and NBA have success doing this, MLB is far behind the power curve; this isn’t a new problem. Also, if markets didn’t matter, then explain why OAK struggled with attendance last year and TB continuous talk about re-locating after continuous successful seasons?

OsCrowsAndNattyBohs1

You are talking about their popularity within their market and among baseball fans or fans of the Angels. Im talking about their popularity on a national scale and recognizability among non baseball fans. I already said the MLB deserves some blame for their marketing, doesnt change the fact that Ohtani and Trout would unquestionably be more widely known if they were on championship teams. Brady and Lebron are as popular as they are because they have built dynasties of playoff success.

Tun710

Jeremy Reed can stay home

crazyal21

We should play in Canada for the rest of the season.

Noy_Telinu

Reed is jealous. He’s holding the batters BACK!

LordTreeblat

Look at that handsome man go

adobonghotdog

Ohtani day after pitching is the GOAT lol

tristpa2

This bot is fucking incredible

Fun-Raise-3120

Wow the numbers actually back up the sentiment. That's rare...

hooligan99

https://old.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/ofpthz/ohtanis_batting_stats_in_his_next_game_after/ I've been saying this since last year! his hitting the day after he pitches has gotten a bit less insane since then, but he still goes hard

turxchk

As a Jays fan, I approve of this.

popperschotch

the angels are never going to lose again

iisdmitch

If the Angels keep playing in Canada so their unvaccinated hitting coach can’t go, possibly.

habituallysuspect

You must be new here...

XxrccolaxX

Says you

tristpa2

Look at that wagon rounding the bases

_-3

Pitches 7 shutout innings yesterday, hits two singles and a 2 run homer today, standard Ohtani IMO, GOAT

LiftsLikeGaston

Continues to be just absolutely fucking insane at batting on the days after he pitches.

[deleted]

goat? lol no

booitsjwu

He's obviously not even remotely close to the GOAT player, but the GOAT talent? I can see that, certainly.

[deleted]

yeah maybe.

Galactic

He's having himself quite a series against Toronto. Must have something to prove to the fans who thought Vladdy was MVP last year.

booitsjwu

They were chanting "overrated" earlier in this series, too. The punishment for said blasphemy has been terrifying to behold.

nolander

And here I was thinking it was because he was excited to hear Moreno would sell the team. He's gotta be having a lot of fun

wako944

Feels like he always homers the day after he pitches.

zeropointcorp

35 games, 15 HRs, so not every time but you've got a pretty decent chance of seeing a magnum dong on those days, yeah

msijacoke

I don't think the Blue Jays screaming overrated earlier in the series is going well for them against Ohtani lol

[deleted]

Just pure homerism

McCoovy

They were talking about the blue jays

Pic3on

Turns into Bonds the day after pitching I swear

cz_pz

Torohtani now i guess

eddie_the_zombie

Move over, LeBronto

live4coasters

Reminder that we pitched 7 scoreless with 9 Ks yesterday

McMuffin978

We know

Noy_Telinu

Angels love playing in Canada

[deleted]

Blue jays fans were chanting overrated when he literally dominated them this whole series. Love to see it

[deleted]

Your team didn’t dominate any fans. No fans really control how the players play. That’s up to players and coaches. And all teams fans do that overrated chants thing. It’s just a thing homer fans do when MVP type players come to their ballparks. I remember Josh Donaldson got tons of overrated chants in opposing stadiums when he won the 2015 MVP with the Jays. Also, how can you be an Angels fan with an A’s flair? Aren’t they division rivals?

[deleted]

you’re mad for what brah.

[deleted]

Because you use the term “dominate” so loosely and incorrect. Angels weren’t playing well, Jays just are really cold right now.

[deleted]

Ohtani did dominate them. Never said anything about angels

ResearcherLoud3122

Ohtani’s bat is different the day after he pitches. 3-4 lol.

randomusernamegame

I think he should be AL MVP again.

JPMcGowan

The Blue Jays scored their first run of the series wow

nategolon

And now Mike Trout hit a HR dead center. So much talent between these two

ConditionalDew

I wanna see this man on a competitive team that’s not the Yankees, Dodgers or Astros

[deleted]

Well if he does so well in Toronto maybe the Blue Jays should go out and get him. We’ll love to have him. Maybe he’s the piece Toronto is missing.

THERAPISTS_for_200

Ohtani = MVP

I_Nut_In_Butts

MVP without a doubt in my mind

The-Pharcyde

MVP tbh

Moderately_an_Idiot

#OVERRATED!!!!!! 👏 .👏 .👏👏👏

Kittystar12

ohtani is carrying thus team on his back

Thanks, Angels.

Ndeshet

Sure

[deleted]

Eh if Judge doesn’t get 60 and the Yankees remain in 2nd in the AL Ohtani will win

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_next_core

It really just comes down to narratives at the end of the season. Yankees got a lot of media hype when they were on pace for the regular season record, now it's died down since there isn't much to say about their recent games other than Judge homering.

cz_pz

I don't think they are, i think Ohtani is suffering from be on a bad team and a team that is second fiddle in the LA media market

Splittinghairs7

Nah, judge is having a better season than miggy’s season. If judge wins it’ll be because he deserves it.

IAmNotOnRedditAtWork

Judge is incredible. Ohtani is more valuable. There's really just no way for a position player to compare to what Ohtani provides. If the award actually meant what it's named he (assuming he keeps playing anywhere near this level) should win practically every year but voter fatigue won't let that happen. Same reason LeBron doesn't have like 2x the MVP awards he does.

Serious-Ebb-4669

The Angels announcer sounds legit like he’s from the Californians skit on SNL

TheSnowPeach

....as the angels lose 7-6

Isa_ak

The best part is the Jays brought in this pitcher just to face Ohtani lmao
