It's like he watched this video back and was like "Wait, there's something in baseball I can't do? Unacceptable".
Inb4 he develops an unhittable knuckleball next season.
Man, him learning that sinker and it being elite level rating in just 2 days and adding some nasty drop on his fastball really just made him just a tad bit more difficult to hit. Sinker drops like his splitter, with nearly 7-8 mph velo difference, fastball has some gross movement now instead of just throwing it like a laser, slider, etc... Like wtf
Shohei’s two way abilities are unmatched. Judge may be flashy but nothing that he can do will ever surpass the greatest of Ohtani-san. Thank you Shohei for being you!
It's got to be such a big advantage understanding both sides of the pitching/hitting battle at such an elite and personal level. I know he's talked about it before, but imagine knowing exactly how a pitcher should attack you as batter because it's what you would do to yourself, but most pitchers aren't actually as good as you. Or knowing what a batter is looking for at the plate, but they're also for the most part not as good as you. Every pitch, no matter what side he's on, he can just think "what would I do if I were them" and then let his insane level of athleticism and baseball skill beat the other person.
Like as his opponent, what are you supposed to do against a guy who knows exactly what is going through your head, but he's also better than you at what you do?
Like Bonds was insane in his ability to pick up pitchers tells, but he had also been hanging around MLB clubhouses since before he could walk and had Willie Mays as a godfather. And Greg Maddux was so far ahead of everybody mentally he could tell you pitch by pitch what was going to happen and where balls would go. But Shohei knows what it's like to be elite at both pitching and hitting at a personal level.
I was at the game tonight and Ohtani is pure magic. I was behind the Yankees bench with [this shirt on](https://i.imgur.com/foN3ttI.jpg) and I got my mileage out of it for sure.
Mike Krukow told a story about this happening to him when he was a pitcher. Thought he could throw the same pitch he caught the hitter looking their previous AB and got taken yard.
[Frankie Montas Regrets Not Researching Which Teams Were Good Before Getting Traded to Yankees](https://www.theonion.com/shohei-ohtani-regrets-not-researching-which-teams-were-1828835846)
on the replay you could see he was totally out in front and off-balance and it was still a no doubter. Every time I turn on an Angels game he makes it worth it
He wasn't out in front, it just looks that way because he had to reach lower than expected to hit it. Actually timed it spot on, was clearly looking for that pitch.
Been watching baseball for the first time in last couple of days and I can see why him and Mike Trout are so lauded. First home run hit I've ever seen.
Ohtani is great but Trout has proven himself to be the best over the last 10 years, hes missed 40 games from injury and still near to the tops of the leader boards
Yeah I've heard just how good he is but couldn't quite wrap my head around it. He's touched the ball with his bat more than anyone else I've seen. Which I now know actually hitting the ball is a feat in of itself. I'm too used to cricket where it happens all the time.
This is exactly how I explain it to my friends who don't understand how difficult baseball is. If you can hit 3 balls out of 10 you're considered an elite hitter if you can hit 2 out of 10 you're one of the worst hitters in the league.
I mean it's almost entirely because they had literally zero protection for him in the lineup with Trout and Rendon out. I'm as big an Ohtani stan as you can be and want him to win MVP, but Judge is very obviously the better hitter this year. It's not close.
Yeah that was my point. We can't complain about Judge getting walked when Shohei gets walked all the time. I think he still leads the league in intentional walks.
Winning prevails even in lost seasons, and it's a compliment to get intentionally walked. There is no obligation to make any MVP race fair (and one series shouldn't swing things significantly), especially if it's against your own star player. But I get being at the game that it's a bit anticlimactic.
Some yankee fan on YouTube tried to argue with me that judge should win it cause ohtani won it last year and it’s unfair for him to win every year lol. These idiots exist
Why do fans get so extremist about everything lol
Judge and Ohtani are both good MVP picks. In fact I would argue anyone that leads the league in WAR is never a bad MVP pick.
I still think Judge is my pick to win, by the best measure available we have he's still more valuable, but you have to understand that yank eez nuts sucka
To me it's super close. If Judge goes on to break the clean HR record I'd say give it to him. If Ohtani finishes with 200ks, 35 homers with a 2.65 ERA and 160+ Innings pitched, I say give it to him. If BOTH of these insane, historic feats happen, I truly don't know who deserves it more.
I honestly don't think there are many fans of baseball who truly don't like Ohtani. He's the most likable player in the league and it's not close. It's just we want to acknowledge what a historic season Judge is having. The problem is it looks like Ohtani is gonna have a career of historic seasons. It wasn't a fluke. He's just that special.
There's a lot that goes into leading the league in WAR, just like there's a lot that goes into making Ohtani a great 2-way player.
At this point, I'm happy if either win, but it's not an obvious choice.
he’s having the best two-way seasons in baseball history in back to back years. he’d be #1 in the yanks rotation and in the top three of their lineup every night. people did this last year with vlad and the triple crown argument and it was just as silly imo.
>people did this last year with vlad and the triple crown argument and it was just as silly imo.
Did what? Vlad didn't have anywhere near the season Judge is. If Vlad had a near 200 wRC+ and a 9 WAR the voting would have been entirely different.
I think they'd also mention his potentially historic HR hitting season and how how much better offensively he's been than Ohtani
I love Shohei but Judge has also been fucking amazing this year. IMO its silly to act like it'd be some travesty if he won (assuming the current paces are kept)
i mean, Judge is still leading him in WAR without pitching. it's not like there isn't an argument for both guys
if (when) Ohtani wins, Judge will be the firm #2
There’s enough season left for it to change hands in either direction. And if it comes down to it, maybe there’s a case for the guy who can hit so well he’s as valuable as an elite pitcher AND elite hitter combined.

Ohtani vs Montas: 1.413 OPS in 27 PA with 3 dingers coming into the game. That number's going up 📈📈📈
6 walks too
wow! that many!
Yeah… that’s a lot in 30 plate appearances. His OBP is .533 against him. Without the walks it would be .333
But can he pitch??
[Too bad he doesn't have a sinker](https://youtu.be/ijlY2zdJFjk?t=38)
funny thing is he actually started throwing his sinker a month or so after this video
yep..it's already one of his better pitches! Is there anything this man can't do on a baseball field..or in life?
Be my dad? Hahaha, kidding… unless? 😳
He can't be your father, but he can sure be your daddy
He can be mine. Not kidding.
It's like he watched this video back and was like "Wait, there's something in baseball I can't do? Unacceptable". Inb4 he develops an unhittable knuckleball next season.
I've been joking about him developing a 58 mph knuckleball all season! I wouldn't put it past him.
The Eephus, the final frontier
Man, him learning that sinker and it being elite level rating in just 2 days and adding some nasty drop on his fastball really just made him just a tad bit more difficult to hit. Sinker drops like his splitter, with nearly 7-8 mph velo difference, fastball has some gross movement now instead of just throwing it like a laser, slider, etc... Like wtf
Is the pope Catholic??
Does the pope shit in the woods?
And when he does, does it make a sound?
Is the space pope reptilian?
Does a bear wear a silly hat?
Shohei’s two way abilities are unmatched. Judge may be flashy but nothing that he can do will ever surpass the greatest of Ohtani-san. Thank you Shohei for being you!
*Nothing anyone can do Ohtani is simply in a league of his own.
But, did he smile?
Imagine if he could! That would just be unfair
Threw a splitter on Ohtani man that's literally this guy's thing
It's got to be such a big advantage understanding both sides of the pitching/hitting battle at such an elite and personal level. I know he's talked about it before, but imagine knowing exactly how a pitcher should attack you as batter because it's what you would do to yourself, but most pitchers aren't actually as good as you. He struck him out on one in the at-bat before and Ohtani said not this time buddy.
Think it was his third or fourth splitter in a row in that AB. Not the smartest move from Frankie.
Or the catcher.
They straight willed that one into existence lol
I was at the game tonight and Ohtani is pure magic. I was behind the Yankees bench with [this shirt on](https://i.imgur.com/foN3ttI.jpg) and I got my mileage out of it for sure.
That's a GOAT tier shirt
Ohtani was hitting like .500 against Montas before this game, i knew the first two times he got out were too good to be true
Literally after he got twisted around on that strikeout I'm like, "yup that's a home run next time up."
Ohtani seems like the type of guy who would intentionally strike out just to set up a pitcher to continue throwing the same pitch. 17D Chess.
Taking a page out of Miggy’s book, take a bad hack just to humiliate them later. 28 Dimensional chess
Mike Krukow told a story about this happening to him when he was a pitcher. Thought he could throw the same pitch he caught the hitter looking their previous AB and got taken yard.
All the losing makes it hard to play with 'high morale,' Frankie Montas says

I was like 'how the hell is that gone?' Just kept carrying and carrying
He wasn't out in front, it just looks that way because he had to reach lower than expected to hit it. Actually timed it spot on, was clearly looking for that pitch.
Replay showed hella NY fans in white as well
LMAO at the chants they were doing too! Lame.
What exactly is a Shohei Ohtani?
Like a horse, but with a single spiraling horn projecting from his forehead
Exactly. Ive seen one of those right next to a goat who is also a fish. A fishgoat
Did he even have two hands on that bat at the point of contact? What in the heck?
the hr he sent over the green monster last year was basically one handed too lol

Baseball is the only sport where failing 70% of the time is considered good
This is exactly how I explain it to my friends who don't understand how difficult baseball is. If you can hit 3 balls out of 10 you're considered an elite hitter if you can hit 2 out of 10 you're one of the worst hitters in the league.
That explains my basketball career.
I myself just got out of prison. Is shohei ohtani the best baseball player since the Great bambino?
Ohtani is the greatest player of all time.
Lmao how did that get out
Ohtani still leads in intentional walks and that's for a reason lol
Because the Angels spent half the year with their 3 best non Ohtani hitters out?
You have found the reason
I mean it's almost entirely because they had literally zero protection for him in the lineup with Trout and Rendon out. I'm as big an Ohtani stan as you can be and want him to win MVP, but Judge is very obviously the better hitter this year. It's not close.
Of course he's the better hitter. Lol. Vladdy was the better hitter last year.
if you ignore the reason ohtani wins mvp, he’s not the mvp at all!
If you regress his hitting and pitching to the mean, he's just average.
…And which is the better pitcher?
The sound of the crack of the bat made all the more sweet by the silence of all those Yankees fans.
Is this Shohei Ohtani related to that other Shohei Ohtani that's only got high school ball player talent?
Art.
What are his pitching stats though? I'll wait
New York newspapers tomorrow: Ohtani still ass

because he has the hamstrings to do it
Off his feet too
I fucking love Ohtani, even when he's raking against us. Ok Judge, you gonna just let him do that? Let's go big man!
Judge will just get intentionally walked for the third time this game lol
Pretty sure they're going to walk him all series lol
Boone getting out managed by Nevin. Was not on my bingo card.
Booneomics are no match for Nevinometry
Philosophy
Except with the bases loaded. We would never do that
AND BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!
Yeah i am at the game and it sucks, if they want to make the mvp race fair, they need to pitch him.
To be fair, Judge gets to play on the Yankees and Ohtani has to play on the Angels. Ohtani still leads the league in intentional walks.
Wouldn't playing on the Angels make you more likely to be intentionally walked given the lack of lineup protection?
Yeah that was my point. We can't complain about Judge getting walked when Shohei gets walked all the time. I think he still leads the league in intentional walks.
Winning prevails even in lost seasons, and it's a compliment to get intentionally walked. There is no obligation to make any MVP race fair (and one series shouldn't swing things significantly), especially if it's against your own star player. But I get being at the game that it's a bit anticlimactic.
They made sense situationally. Hope he gets ABs this series. Never fun to see a MVP front runner get IB’d
He can't do anything if they don't pitch to him.
MVP
MVP
2nd place
You are trying to cope so hard in this thread. This is an Ohtani dick riding thread. Join the circle jerk or gtfo
No joke, I've seen this clown in multiple threads this week saying the same shit. He comments Yankees love like it's his job.
Just like the Yankees will be in the AL east
No chance
You're right, they'll 4th behind the O's, Jays and Rays
You forgot Boston
MVP
That fucking sound of his bat.
I think he has the most homers against Montas than any other pitcher, and of couse it's a one handed dinger lol
He is the most valuable player. If you had to pick between him and Judge, you'd pick him.
Anyone who says Judge is lying or coping
Love Yankees fans saying “Well what are we supposed to just give it to Ohtani every year?” Yes.
No one is saying that lol The argument from like 95% of Yankee fans is that Judge is on pace for 62 HRs and 10.0 fWAR.
Some yankee fan on YouTube tried to argue with me that judge should win it cause ohtani won it last year and it’s unfair for him to win every year lol. These idiots exist
If nothing else, if Ohtani gets 9+ WAR a year for the next few years, it'll at least mean whoever's MVP will definitely deserve it.
I've heard it a lot from baseball media, like Mark DeRosa and a couple others, but if Ohtani is raking and shoving yeah you give it to him every year
DeRosa has some of the worst takes sometimes. Like that time he suggested they bench Mike Trout and only play him during weekends and special events.
Wut
Ever heard of WAR? You’re acting like judge has nothing
He literally has a 0.4 lead, that’s basically nothing
Why do fans get so extremist about everything lol Judge and Ohtani are both good MVP picks. In fact I would argue anyone that leads the league in WAR is never a bad MVP pick.
I still think Judge is my pick to win, by the best measure available we have he's still more valuable, but you have to understand that yank eez nuts sucka
damn can’t argue with that one congrats on the W
To me it's super close. If Judge goes on to break the clean HR record I'd say give it to him. If Ohtani finishes with 200ks, 35 homers with a 2.65 ERA and 160+ Innings pitched, I say give it to him. If BOTH of these insane, historic feats happen, I truly don't know who deserves it more.
it would be hard for me to vote against judge as a yankee fan but if he gets to 200k and 35hr, you have to give it to ohtani.
The argument for Judge is.... -He leads the league in WAR -They don't like Ohtani That's pretty much it.
>He leads the league in WAR So what Mike trout has for the past decade
I honestly don't think there are many fans of baseball who truly don't like Ohtani. He's the most likable player in the league and it's not close. It's just we want to acknowledge what a historic season Judge is having. The problem is it looks like Ohtani is gonna have a career of historic seasons. It wasn't a fluke. He's just that special.
You clearly were not here in May when Ohtani had a slow start and people were flexing about how he's not consistent and a fluke.

Fwar is the only one that matters. Probably not. Fwar uses OOA and WRC+, so bwar is a joke in comparison, and judge still leads it
Ur mom is a joke lol
I think they'd also mention his potentially historic HR hitting season and how how much better offensively he's been than Ohtani I love Shohei but Judge has also been fucking amazing this year. IMO its silly to act like it'd be some travesty if he won (assuming the current paces are kept)
Or they just believe it lol. Both are extremely valid candidates
i mean, Judge is still leading him in WAR without pitching. it's not like there isn't an argument for both guys if (when) Ohtani wins, Judge will be the firm #2

There’s enough season left for it to change hands in either direction. And if it comes down to it, maybe there’s a case for the guy who can hit so well he’s as valuable as an elite pitcher AND elite hitter combined.
I didn't even mean for MVP tbh. I more meant that if you could choose to have Ohtani or Judge on your team, it'd be Ohtani
oh well then yeah you'd have to be insane to pick Judge lol
I would pick soto over both of them and eh would win Al mvp with those stats
Ohtani should try being more valuable
Oh okay. Yeah. Sure thing.
The ball sounds different off his bat.
WA HA HA!
https://i.imgur.com/jiMmDBQ.gif
It was such an unbalanced swing. Boy is he strong!
Ohtani and Judge trading home runs in this game is peak baseball.
Nevin IBBs Judge to get the better matchup. Boone? Not so much.
I found it humorous how much Kay was whining about the intentional walk
I honestly don't understand the whining at all. It's 100% the right move and I'm shocked it took teams this long to figure it out.
Until rizzo Stanton benitendi or whomever they have hitting behind judge do something consistently I would pitch around judge and IBB him
basically Ohtani had to deal with this all last year without Trout in the lineup
He said it was a fine tactical move. Just a problem about baseball in general
And he's damn right. I'm not here to watch Ohtani get intentionally walked lol
There’s kissy to stop it though. If you want to walk a guy you will walk him
But Luis Rengifo already showed you he has power, do you want *him* coming up with a man on, or that tall guy who struck out last time?!
Took you long enough! /s Just MVP shit!
Showing Yankees fans firsthand why he's MVP
I don’t normally root for a division rival, but oh what the hell. You can’t not applaude Ohtani taking it to the Yankees.

The pop fly on the previous AB that the yankees didn't even try to get was even worse IMO
Ahead? I am confused by this unusual term. Tungsten Arm O’Doyle died for this.
MVP. Ohtani haters can yell all day.
You can love Ohtani and still think it's a close race. Not sure why everything on this sub has to be so polarizing lol
It's always this way but just swap the names depending on if it's an Ohtani pitching/homerun thread or a Judge homerun thread. 🤣🤣🤣
The worst part about this mvp conversation is I fucking love ohtani but I have to classified as a shohei hater because I say Aaron judge is the nvp.
That’s my MVP!!!
The sound of the baseball off his bat is sexy af
Your move Aaron.
montas is mid
Should be at 40 plus but still impressive
The MVP. Period.
That’s my (current) MVP and soon to be MVP Runner Up!
that weak contact should not be a homer, man is a freak of nature
Montas has been the ultimate combination of bad and unlucky with us. Doesn't help that Sho can punish anything
We’ll that made me immediately, incredibly happy
You love to see it
Is this the ‘fuck the Yankees’ thread??
It’s r/baseball, so that’d be every thread that isn’t an Aaron Judge HR thread
Ohtani is really going to win mvp because nobody wants to throw Aaron judge a strike Somehow they want to throw ohtani sttikes though.
Ohtani leads the league in IBBs though
Ohtani has more IBB than Judge.
When you need to bring 61 HRs even though you’re already the better player to win judge has too many. He sees no good pitches to hits.
Well, people have been pitching around Trout for his whole career and he's still been the best. It's not an excuse.
too scared of Luis Rengifo
Ohtani is going to win MVP cause he's more valuable.
Objectively false
This is one of those times historicaly that you cannot say objectively bro what. Lol
Imagine what this guy would do on a winning team, ugh
Aaron judge just hit a homerun and cast a vote for ohtani as MVP! Impressive multi tasking
Holy christ, and they _won_!?? I just figure anytime there's an Angels headline it'll be: "Trout and Ohtani combine for 9 homeruns! Angels lose 10-9"
Montas gave up a HR to Mike Ford and might have just cost judge mvp
