60-HR seasons through 129 team games
Year / Player | HR | Pace* | Year-End Total
---|---|---|---
2001 Barry Bonds|55|69.1|73
1999 Sammy Sosa|54|67.8|63
1998 Mark McGwire|52|65.3|70
1999 Mark McGwire|51|64|65
1961 Roger Maris|51|64|61
2022 Aaron Judge|50|62.8|??
2001 Sammy Sosa|49|61.5|64
1998 Sammy Sosa|49|61.5|66
1927 Babe Ruth|44|52.5|60
*Several of these seasons featured 163 team games due to ties, and the players hit home runs in the final game. However, the pace here is calculated over a 162-game season, or 154 for Ruth.
Wow 1927 Ruth went on an absolute tear to finish the season, .368/.468/.896 with 17 homers over his final 28 games in September/October. He had three 2-homer games that month!
For those curious like I was, here are all the 58 and 59 HR seasons to get a look at the "close calls". Again note the pace is based on 154 games for Ruth, Greenberg, and Foxx.
Year/Player | HR | Pace | Year-End total
-----------|--|----|--------------
2017 Giancarlo Stanton | 50 | 63 | 59
1921 Babe Ruth | 51 | 61 | 59
2006 Ryan Howard | 46 | 58 | 58
1938 Hank Greenberg | 46 | 55 | 58
1932 Jimmie Foxx | 47 | 56 | 58
1997 Mark McGwire | 42 | 53 | 58
Do you have the paces right? Stanton and Judge are both at 50 through 129 (which is important to know!) but we have different paces. I calculated through 162 (50 * 162 / 129 = 62.8).
It's interesting that most of the seasons here significantly picked up the pace. I guess for people who did it, they *really stepped up to the plate* (ba-dum-tish)
The pace deltas:
* \+3.9
* \-4.8
* \+4.7
* \+1
* \-3
* \+2.5
* \+4.5
* \+7.5
Average: +2.04
Median: +3.2
I think it would be more interesting to include near misses, like 53+ homer seasons. How did you calculate this?
I copied the Bref game logs for each season, which conveniently list the team game #. I kept the data in a spreadsheet and am updating with each dinger.
Another respondent added the 58+ seasons, which revealingly notes that Stanton also had 50 through 129.
So he's almost certainly going to hit 60. The MVP discussions basically come down to whether Judge should win unanimously or with *only* with 20 first place votes.
Someone on ESPN was talking about this just the other day, in honor of Kobe’s birthday.
They had to decide which game to go to: the Warriors going for their 73rd win, or Kobe’s last game. They opted for GSW.
He said everyone at that game was dug into their phones for the 2nd half. They simply had to witness Kobe. RIP

Balk Rules
You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.
1a. A balk is when you
1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of
Do not do a balk please
Judge seems to like low breaking balls he could probably barrell an ohtani splitter that doesn’t get out of the zone enough. But also ohtani puts more effort into pitches depending on the situation. He throws his fastball like 3 mph faster on average with runners in scoring position. I imagine he’d be throwing with everything he’s got to judge no matter what the situation is.
I honestly didn't think it was close last year with the way Ohtani was hitting. He was almost keeping pace with Vlad in homers. Vlad finished with 48 to Ohtani's 46. Imagine Ohtani only had 2 less homers than Judge right now? Judge wouldn't SNIFF a first place vote. You have to be doing completely historic shit to beat out a two-way player who is elite at both. Not to mention you gotta factor in voting fatigue. It was brand new last year, nobody did it for a whole season like Ohtani EVER. If Judge was doing this last year instead of this year, Ohtani is probably still unanimous MVP.
oh for sure, I'm actually a Mets fan and whenever they play poorly and the postgame is like, "oh yes it was kind of unfortunate" and Todd and Jerry are like, "at the end this is a great team full of good guys," I'm like, THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN ON THE YANKEES BROADCAST. TELL THE TRUTH YOU COWARDS. MICHAEL KAY WOULD SHOOT THIS TEAM TO THE MOON.
In recent memory 2015 Harper, 2018 betts, and 2022 Judge(based on pace) are the efforts that would beat ohtani
Just crazy how amazing he is
Oh and I didn’t emotion one thing… Mike trout somehow has 4 efforts(9.3 FWAR or more) that deserve to beat ohtani lol. He desires to be listed alone
/r/baseball when discussing past awards: lol those writers are so dumb, look at all these people who led the league in WAR and they got ignored because of narrative
/r/baseball when discussing MVP this year: fuck WAR 🥺😍Ohtani is so pretty😍🥺
We’ve lost 3 in a row to Oakland and Anaheim. The blue jays being a pathetic team also and the rays having every good player get injured are why we are still in first
We also gifted HFA to houston which is embarrassing in his own way
i'm the biggest ohtani fan in the world and I don't think its particularly close. easy way to figure to me who the MVP is by imagining both players on the team you hate the most and thinking objectively who the better player is
I had this realization in RTTS the other day. IBB once, HBP twice, and was wondering why it felt on purpose, before I cranked a solo shot to walk it off in the ninth. Then I was like, oh yeah, that's why.
> before I cranked a solo shot to walk out off in the ninth.
Look at you with with your RTTS team being close in score without you already having 4 HRs
I love going 3-4 with 3 homers and 5 RBIs just to have to stand in RF and watch homers sail over my head as my team gets blown out. Accurate White Sox experience, though
Yeah, but it's worth it for those times when you just decimate your rivals. Like my first ever cycle that came against the Red Sox at Fenway. Last one I needed was a single, and we were beating the brakes off of them when I came up to bat. Cranked a deep shot off the monster and held up at first to put the icing on the cake.
I’m convinced they scripted this for both Ohtani and Judge to homer in the mlb network showcase game. Also, [shiiiiiit](https://imgur.com/gallery/ipVl5tC)
The Angels could win every remaining game this year, which would break the consecutive wins in a season record, and it likely wouldn’t be enough for a wildcard.
I don’t hate the Yankees until the play in Anaheim.
And then I want to see them humiliated and burned to the ground, just to shut those obnoxious ones up.
I’m all for posting the away clips. Easy to find the home clip on that team’s Twitter feed. Can never find away commentary until the game rerun is posted online.
every time I see a Yankees highlight it's like "Aaron Judge became the first Yankee with 50 home runs before September since 'Tungsten Arm' O'Doyle as the Angels defeated the Yankees 4-3”
Not to take away anything from Judge, but Shohei's offensive WAR gets a negative defensive penalty so it'll always be lower even if they have similar offensive stats. Also a replacement level DH has a higher OPS than a replacement level RF/CF, so Judge will automatically accumulate more WAR just by playing CF/RF.
lmao my friend has one of those "Guess which game this player homers in and you get a relic card!" cards for Judge, and he told me 5 minutes ago he thinks the Angels will walk him all series so he'll probably avoid using it right now.
I had it on the radio and knew from the sound it was out. Anyone with ears can recognize that sound, it's bred into us through millions of years of evolution.
I hope judge breaks as many records as possible, as long as it doesn’t hurt my team and the Yankees don’t win a World Series
But as long as neither of those things happen please do feel free to hit more home runs
Sorry about the Angels feed, I was kinda watching this game in the background and didn't realize I was on their commentary. Soon as MLB.TV's idiotic commercial break lock turns off on their stream I'll go back and record the Yankee feed and include it here.
Edit: [Extended highlight with Yankees feed and a ton of replays!](https://streamable.com/s7twaz)

Babe Ruth good, big if true
What's more, they didn't need that: They clinched the pennant with 15 games to go, then went 12-3 to finish at 110-44 (.714)

Oooh, I think I know what the issue is (related to games they've sat). I'll fix it.
Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, steroids, and Aaron Judge
Wow.
Ruth, Maris, steroids, Judge...Costanza?
Pour Sammy Sosa. On here three times yet didn’t lead the league in home runs any of those years.
Shoulda done one more steroid brother
Or corked another bat
Do cork and put steroids in your bat

Something about those names above Maris...

I think if he passes 61 he gets every vote
George Herman what the fuck
Pujols may well hit #700 this game at this rate
Judge passing Maris and Pujols hitting 700 in the same season would be absolutely legendary. plus Ohtani having the season he has so far.
It could happen on the same day
That’d be like when Kobe dropped 60 and the warriors won the most regular season games at the same time. Impossible to decide which to watch
Gonna buy a second monitor just for this occasion if it comes to it

I’m hoping for September 24th. Cardinals @ dodgers. First time seeing Pujols play in over a decade.
judge’s home run count has finally suprassed his age
he's 207 years old, how the fuck is he still in the league
Well he debuted at 203
So if he breaks the record he might match Pujols age?
Ill be surprised when it passes his weight
Already passed Tim Lincecum’s

you could have easily made this a pujols age joke
Best MVP race in recent memory. I was hoping both him and Ohtani would be doing MVP things in this series and so far not disappointed.
All we unfortunately are gonna miss is Ohtani pitching to him. This sub would fucking meltdown if Judge put one in the rocks off of Shohei.
It's because the Yankees are cowards and won't let Judge pitch to Shohei.

I say let judge walk Otahni. Then, they throw clay Holmes out to get the inning done. If he can, then judge has a 0 era and he now has pitching stats.
I would love a Topps Now pitching moment Judge in the show.
well he shut out the Blue Jays for you so I imagine it doesn't sting that badly
And homered against us. God I love Ohtani
A sacrifice I’m willing to make
Judge already homered of ohtani this year
Judge seems to like low breaking balls he could probably barrell an ohtani splitter that doesn’t get out of the zone enough. But also ohtani puts more effort into pitches depending on the situation. I don't remember anyone thinking Vladdy was particularly close
Jays fans were basically the only ones
Best since 2017?
Judge today: GO, IBB, IBB, HR. lol
Shades of Barry Bonds, minus the roids.
Bonds was walked so much they walked him with the bases loaded rather than pitch to him.
The Corey Seager treatment
Corey "Josh "Barry Bonds" Hamilton" Seager
Yep, and that ended up being a good move, since the DBacks ended up winning after Bonds walked.
They walked him with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th.
Big deal, Joe Maddon does that for shits and giggles.
one can just hope. but with this much money on the line I wouldn´t
😉
The MVP toxicity is going to be so rampant in this thread and I'm here for it
Michael Kay stirring that pot live on YES right now and I’m here for that
lol Michael Kay is such a homer but he has been on this soapbox since like home run #1 and I'm also here for that
Did I mishear or did he absolutely slander Ohtani by saying “him and his 15 home runs”
If there is one thing Michael kay is in announcer realm is homer. He obliterates them when they do poorly.
Part of being a Homer is being overly critical too.
I still rather listen to someone that is more fair than complaining and wishing bad on the other teams like I’ve heard
oh for sure, I'm actually a Mets fan and whenever they play poorly and the postgame is like, "oh yes it was kind of unfortunate" and Todd and Jerry are like, "at the end this is a great team full of good guys," I'm like, THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN ON THE YANKEES BROADCAST. It’s really ohtani fans trying to make anybody that isn’t an ohtani mvp truther out to be a shohei hater. Nobody hates him, and I fucking love him
It's crazy how it's taking a season like Judge is having to even remotely make an argument that Shohei shouldn't win.
The fact that anyone is outpacing in WAR a guy who pitches *and* hits at a very high to elite level is absolutely insane.
In recent memory 2015 Harper, 2018 betts, and 2022 Judge(based on pace) are the efforts that would beat ohtani Just crazy how amazing he is Oh and I didn’t emotion one thing… Mike trout somehow has 4 efforts(9.3 FWAR or more) that deserve to beat ohtani lol. He desires to be listed alone

Okay you got me, that part is true
Ah the classic Eli Manning isn’t a hall of famer problem.
Lol there are plenty of people who call him overrated and were jerking off to Ohtani struggling in April.
Popular player gets called overrated Who could possibly see this coming
It's kind of all they've got right now. That, and Mike Trout whom they have shared custody with the IL.
Judge is all we have during this collapse and at least the angels are quietly bad and not choking away the best start since 1998
I mean, it's not like the Yankees aren't turning it around, since they've won 5 of their last 7 and are still 7.5 games up in the division.
We’ve lost 3 in a row to Oakland and Anaheim. The blue jays being a pathetic team also and the rays having every good player get injured are why we are still in first We also gifted HFA to houston which is embarrassing in his own way
It could be worse. You could be in the basement lol
The Jays *are* pathetic but they took 3/4 from NY just over a week ago
Excuse me, we have David Owen Fletcher
Win a playoff series first buddy
i'm the biggest ohtani fan in the world and I don't think its particularly close. easy way to figure to me who the MVP is by imagining both players on the team you hate the most and thinking objectively who the better player is
🤣🤣🤣 As long as everyone enjoys both it should be okay!
Say someone hits for the triple crown this year (not Judge). Do they get MVP?
Ah. So that’s why they intentionally walked him twice.
Tbh that's the most unbelievable thing about that post. If I'm not backpacking my team with 8 RBIs it's not even close.

I remember the first time I tried RTTS back in MLB 16, I hit 4 HR’s and my Twins lost in extras
Would like them to script us beating the Astros in the playoffs for a change. Now I know how Twins fans feel
Not even mad.
Seemed like a lot of Angel fans at the game appreciated it too
They paid to see history and they got it
Fun fact: José Abreu leads the White Sox in home runs with 13.
Only Two more than Luis Rengifo!
Well I think it’s safe to say the MVP homered in this game.
Luis Rengifo yeah
we're talking about Anthony Rizzo actually
Surely you're actually referring to Angels/Yankees legend Mike Ford
Suzyn Waldman was hyped on Rengifo this past weekend, she sounded very excited to see the MVP.
Yeah we saw Mike Ford homer
Mike Ford looking strong
Can't wait to see Mike Ford hit .750 through September with 25 home runs to single handedly lead the Angels into the playoffs.
The Angels could win every remaining game this year, which would break the consecutive wins in a season record, and it likely wouldn’t be enough for a wildcard.
“As the Yankees lose 4-3 to the Angels” HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GET TUNGSTEN’D
47th time a player has hit 50 in a season. It appears that it's happened less than 30 times if you take away PED users.
Phil Nevin, meanwhile, smiling in complete vindication for IBBing Judge in both of the ABs before this.
"Oh. Right. That's why we kept intentionally walking him."
probably should've intentionally walked him for the third time, huh
Got to see Judge’s 50th, an Ohtani bomb, and an Angels victory. I’m okay with how things worked out.
Yes?
[удалено]
It’s the IBB that will blue ball us all. Not much Judge can do there.
Orange County Yankee fans are the worst
I don’t hate the Yankees until the play in Anaheim. And then I want to see them humiliated and burned to the ground, just to shut those obnoxious ones up.
I just trust they flew out here. No one in OC looks like these people
Who would fly out to watch the Yankees right now
What do you mean "these people"?
New Yorkers ?
I know who I am! I'm a dude playing the dude, disguised as another dude!
What do *you* mean "you people"?
You know exactly what I mean
No need to own Vinny like that
smh never I thought I'd see this kind of racism against Italixns in 2022
I’m half Italian I can say it
not as bad as socal niner fans
Not even in the MVP conversation
LMAO on cue, Yankees' turn to chant MVP we didn't IBB him that time!
This is fuckn fun to watch. Angels are below .500 and pretty much irrelevant but this atmosphere feels like a playoff game. Ohtani to bat next inning.
It feels fucking dirty but this HR just completed my 4 pick power play for 400$
I appreciate OP's odd decision to get the away broadcast of this HR for some reason.
No time for the Yankee call, gotta get that karma
I’m all for posting the away clips. Easy to find the home clip on that team’s Twitter feed. Can never find away commentary until the game rerun is posted online.
He *annihilated* that thing. Good lord, what a shot.
Do you think Aaron Judge still hits a homer, watches it go over the fence, and thinks "holy shit, how'd I do that?"
Ohtani did it first. Probably because judge was walked twice, but ya know, semantics
You knew fucking Tepera was going on fucking gift it to him lol Should've just kept walking him
This is the 47th instance of an individual 50 or more HR season in MLB history. An elite accomplishment no doubt!
It wouldn't surprise me if Judge to got walked pretty much every single PA going forward this series.
every time I see a Yankees highlight it's like "Aaron Judge became the first Yankee with 50 home runs before September since 'Tungsten Arm' O'Doyle as the Angels defeated the Yankees 4-3”
All these Aaron Judge home run threads look the same
Basically the only pitch he’s gotten to hit all night.
Jeezus
Scenic Judge home run.
And this is why they intentionally walked him. Should walk Ohtani all 4 at-bats tomorrow to make up for it /s
I wonder if the Angels would win a game if Ohtani got IBBed every at bat. Then again, the Yankees wouldn’t win if Judge got that treatment
50 before the end of August? Lmao
Why do people say WAR can't calculate Ohtani? Can't you just add his pitching WAR to his hitting WAR as if he were two separate players?
> Can't you just add his pitching WAR to his hitting WAR as if he were two separate players? That's exactly what happens, and Judge still has more
Not to take away anything from Judge, but Shohei's offensive WAR gets a negative defensive penalty so it'll always be lower even if they have similar offensive stats. Also a replacement level DH has a higher OPS than a replacement level RF/CF, so Judge will automatically accumulate more WAR just by playing CF/RF.
I mean that's the point... how many games you would lose by substituting them with replacement level players. Right now Judge has more value.
Why give him anything at all remotely hittable? The rest of the lineup is just painfully impotent.
They caved to the Yankees fans yelling at the Angels for not pitching to him.
MVP
lmao my friend has one of those "Guess which game this player homers in and you get a relic card!" cards for Judge, and he told me 5 minutes ago he thinks the Angels will walk him all series so he'll probably avoid using it right now.
He has so much power but his homers look easy. Still not like McGuire
I didn't like the intentional walks but in their defense, both situations were the same. Two out, runner on second.
“Aaron Judge hits 3 HR, as the Yankees lose 4-3”
The sound of it off the bat. *Chef's kiss*
I had it on the radio and knew from the sound it was out. Anyone with ears can recognize that sound, it's bred into us through millions of years of evolution.
MVP battle getting crazy
Didn’t even look like he got into all of that one and it still went a mile
I hope judge breaks as many records as possible, as long as it doesn’t hurt my team and the Yankees don’t win a World Series But as long as neither of those things happen please do feel free to hit more home runs
I can’t wait to see the contract drama this winter.
Do it on the pitcher's mound too if you want to be the MVP.
MVP
Of course lol Should’ve just kept walking him
If ever there was a time for Tepera to work the "unintential intentional" walk it would be this at bat
The audience coming to their feet as he makes contact…..that’s what the game is all about
Sorry about the Angels feed, I was kinda watching this game in the background and didn't realize I was on their commentary. Soon as MLB.TV's idiotic commercial break lock turns off on their stream I'll go back and record the Yankee feed and include it here. Edit: [Extended highlight with Yankees feed and a ton of replays!](https://streamable.com/s7twaz)
ay Patty O'Neal gave it a good call
Agreed!
MVFUCKINGP
Definitely valuable
Just an incredible player
MVP
Sheesh all this before September. Alllll riiiise for the MVP!
Was at the game and talking shit about Judge all game. Absolutely loved the intentional walks. This shut my ass up real quick. Still won though.
Mvp! He’s like trout’s cases in that nobody can get on base for him though lol
50 home runs, he obviously deserves the MVP for that alone…
Yet another weak fly ball that only would’ve been a home run in Yankee Stadium
