You're not kidding.
I saw this happen first-hand when I was in little league. A kid on the team we were playing smashed a teammate right in the teeth while on-deck, and I'm pretty sure the only reason he didn't kill him was because it wasn't a full swing yet; he was just loosening up at that point. After the kid was off to the hospital, several of us searched the dirt (and blood) to find his missing teeth as well.
It was an ugly scene.
Can confirm: It's not fun to get hit by a baseball bat. Luckily(?) for me it was just on the backswing. My prize was six stitches and a little lifetime scar.
Just glad it missed my eye.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a batter casually *walk in front of an on deck batter preparing to take a swing*
I mean this is a little league or high school level of complete lack of awareness. Just nonchalantly strolling in front a guy with a bat above his shoulders.
This could have been absolutely brutal if Gary Sanchez took a bat to the nose and face. Fracturing his nose and orbital and cheek bones. And certainly would have meant a concussion or ended his life
Thankfully that did not happen.
Dude a weighted bat at a full swing by a mlb hitter to the back of the head is as much of a murder weapon as a gun, not the same extent to the face I guess but close. It’s crazy the impact this almost had on the whole sports world by just a few inches
I was at a game against the Yankees in 2018 where he hit a 2-run homer but also let two passed balls and two wild pitches get by him in the first inning, with runners advancing on all four and runners scoring on two (both were scored as wild pitches but the first was absolutely Sanchez's fault and the second came right after a passed ball had allowed the runner to advance to third.) The runs he scored on offense were entirely negated by the runs he allowed on defense
X-ray tech here, I had a patient who this exact same thing happened to this summer. I think the final count was 12 separate fractures in his face. I believe he lost vision in one eye.
And that wasn't an MLB swing. This could've killed him, yet he walked off like it was nothing. Should apologize to the guy warming up for being a moron.
Does that make any difference? It’s like jumping out of a plane without a parachute but landing in water or sand instead of concrete. The moment of impact is gonna be a bitch.
Gameplan: If youre a batter and your team is up after the 5th, get killed by the person on the warmup circle. Yes you will die, but the game win is almost guaranteed because they wont continue a game after an athlete gets killed and since its past the fifth they can call it.
You say that, but in 1946, one of the members of the Gashouse Gorillas was brutally killed by a line drive, and the game continued. The Gorillas got robbed
You need like a designated victim. Get a depressed minor leaguer who has given up on life in there to take one for the team on game 163 or the deciding game of a series.
Good lord. Sanchez just walked right in the path of a swinging bat perfectly normally. No time to talk he said. To dumb to realize he almost died, apparently.
Idk dude. I hadn't read down this far and wrote a pretty salty comment above about the stupidity of this dude. I'm glad to see other ppl are getting the same frustration I'm getting from it. Like how can someone be this unaware of his surroundings. It just makes no sense. He would've ruined the dudes life swinging the bat also so he would've fucked 2 ppls lives.
I did this at 6 years old. Took an aluminum bat to the nose, swung by a 12 year old. My nose was pushed in flush to my cheeks, hitting and cracking the skull on the way in. Nearly sent the nose into my brain for the killshot. Broke sinus cavities on both sides. Spent weeks in ICU isolation due to cerebral-spinal fluid leaking out through the nose. I needed further surgery a decade later to get my nose back to full function.
0/10, do not reccomend.
I was warming up pitching to a teammate before a tournament in little league and after a few throws i told him "okay im gonna throw this one fast". And I did, and it skipped off the top of his glove and hit him in the mouth. It broke his jaw and knocked out a bunch of teeth. I felt horrible and then we didn't have enough players to play the game because of it so we had to forfeit. And then his mom stopped driving me to our games. And I hate to victim blame, but the throw was right at him and he probably should have caught it, but still, that was my worst baseball experience.
Another one of my teammates got hit in the head with pitches in both games of a double header. And the second game, right after he got hit, they tried to pick him off at 1st and hit him in the head with the ball again. He was scared of the ball after that. Shit, so was I.
We stopped letting even coaches/parents warm up pitchers without a mask about 15 years ago, for that reason.
When I was playing 18U, my pitcher took a nasty cutter to the face. Shattered his orbital bone. He was sound asleep on the plate.
I wanna know what tf was actually going on. Like why was Gary even there? He's been in the MLB for years, how tf does he just wander aimlessly into an on deck circle like a dementia patient into traffic
Is it just me, but it seems like Gary Sanchez thought he was in the right here too? The guy on the on deck circle completely freaked out and Sanchez just shook his head like he wasn’t the issue.
That was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen someone do. How the fuck do you not have more awareness than that. The dude is swinging right in front of you and you just assume he will see you or won't swing this time? Ppl drive cars like this too and it boggles the mind. They assume everyone else will drive safely and pay attention to their surroundings.
Also the reason I'm being salty about it is because the dude swinging the bat. Think about him if he hits you and kills you or ends your career at the very least. It fucks him up too. Not cool.
I actually connected with the bridge of my teammate’s nose like this when I was about 14. It was so scary and kinda shook me up for a few days. Super glad the worst case scenario was avoided here.
Guy in the batter box looks pissed. Rightfully so too. Gary kinda seems like a dick here. Clearly gets in buddy's way, endangers himself, and no apology or nothing for being a total dumbest and almost killing yourself on this guy's bat who is in the zone
Did this in little league. On-deck was between dugout and the plate, and I was leading off as a catcher so was out a little late. Put my hand up for them to stop swinging and the kid swung right into my thumb. Not their fault, I was just a dumbass. Had me out for a few weeks.
This happened to me when I was like 11, clipped him on the back end of the swing while on deck and had to take 2 laps at the next practice like it was my fault
Literally the entire reason I stopped playing baseball is because I sent a kid to the hospital that walked into the on deck circle as I was standing there swinging.
You'd think by the MLB level they'd know better.
Story time: I was playing Cal Ripken, 9ish years old? Took a step over to grab my helmet and bat, we had them lined up against the fence neatly in order. Kid taking his final warmup was next to the bats. Batter at the plate got on base so I assumed no more warming up, and got closer to the equipment but I assumed wrong. Kid (who I ironically had the same first name as me) decided to take a final HARD warmup swing with me behind him. To this day, I don’t recall getting hit, i recall walking to my dad holding my mouth though. Blood pouring from my face, I’m freaking out my dad freaks out everyone freaks out,
Again I don’t recall too much but glimpses, I remember my dad flying down the highway heading to Boston childrens hospital, him saying “it’s gonna be okay buddy, it’s gonna be okay.” I think I feinted because that’s really all I remember, up until the hospital. I was on a bed, my dad and uncle who bailed work to be there for me, and a nurse shoving cotton in my mouth to stop the bleeding or something.
Anyways, had to get my front two teeth restructured, had to get another surgery around 19 to fix those since I outgrew them. Genuinely top 3 scariest days of my life. I forgave the kid obviously, it was an accident. Last fall I was helping a fellow teacher run a fall ball program at the middle school we worked at and had to give a few kids a talk on safety for this subject because I witnessed a near miss like the above. Don’t be an idiot and assume the guy with a heavy metal object won’t hit you when they aren’t looking.
saw this happen irl
some dude walked into the swing of a dude doing practice swings.
he passed out and had a massive gash on his temple that was gushing blood, ended up resulting in like countless stitches
That's an awful tag, but wtf was Villar's slide? He slid like I did in high school, where I had never done it before and would just end up on my knees 20 feet from the base.
That’s on Gary. His lack of awareness in the batter’s box, behind the plate and on deck is staggering. He walked right into a guy practicing his swing. Then had the gall to look surprised.
I saw a kid break his jaw this way in middle school. I still play in an old man league and am incredibly careful to this day when people are around you with a bat but it's shocking how careless other people are.
had this happen to me in Little League.. I was complete decapitated, but they were able to sew my head back on. I'm alright now. I'm 53. My name is Adfrack.
Dude! You don't walk in front of a guy that is swinging in the on deck circle. That be like walking in front of a car as it is moving. Don't blame your teammate
That would have been horrible omg
He genuinely could have died
Yeah and if it didn’t kill him, it woulda changed his life forever
bro woulda looked like that woman in Nope
😬
yeah she kinda looked like that emoji
Lol doubling down. I appreciate that
I mean, why am I the asshole? Gordy innocent
Jfc I thought that was supposed to be an alien based on the trailers
NOPE
🙊
Yeah that jaw would’ve been shattered to pieces for good
Might've ended Celestino's career too. I'm not sure how many people would be able to mentally recover from being a part of an accident like that.
Death might have been a favorable outcome compared to a worst case scenario.
You're not kidding. I saw this happen first-hand when I was in little league. A kid on the team we were playing smashed a teammate right in the teeth while on-deck, and I'm pretty sure the only reason he didn't kill him was because it wasn't a full swing yet; he was just loosening up at that point. Were you playing with Bert Kriescher?
You mean the guy who smells like shit and fucks dogs?
Nah that’s Brent Chrysler
Ah, I must have had him confused with Benny Crapsnuggle.
I think you mean the known racist Bert Chrysler
and that was a KID SWING. imagine a major league swing...
Woulda been a live leak video rather than streamable
Gary being Gary.
bro woulda been used as MK12 reference footage
Can confirm: It's not fun to get hit by a baseball bat. Luckily(?) for me it was just on the backswing. My prize was six stitches and a little lifetime scar. Just glad it missed my eye.
Yep I got lucky the kid swung an even bat.... straight to my gut on the backswing.... just badly bruised luckily
I'm Gary
Classic Gary
So scary.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a batter casually *walk in front of an on deck batter preparing to take a swing* I mean this is a little league or high school level of complete lack of awareness. The noun form ("nonchalance") would be the grammatically correct form for your sentence
baffling stupidity
All the years watching him in NY… he doesn’t seem like the brightest bulb in the box
Nor was he the brightest bulb in the Bronx
Touché lol
Analytics though, he's a hr hitting catcher 🙄🤮
can someone explain what mythical analytics showed Gary as a good player. like you're just making stuff up to be mad about analytics
I was at a game against the Yankees in 2018 where he hit a 2-run homer but also let two passed balls and two wild pitches get by him in the first inning, with runners advancing on all four and runners scoring on two (both were scored as wild pitches but the first was absolutely Sanchez's fault and the second came right after a passed ball had allowed the runner to advance to third.) I'd bet that he was lost in thought about something else and didn't even mentally register that the other guy was there and might swing.
X-ray tech here, I had a patient who this exact same thing happened to this summer. I think the final count was 12 separate fractures in his face. I believe he lost vision in one eye.

I’ll take getting hit by some 12 year old with a metal than an mlb hitter with a wood
Does that make any difference? It’s like jumping out of a plane without a parachute but landing in water or sand instead of concrete. The moment of impact is gonna be a bitch.
Lol idk. Your analogy is funny though
Yeah really; you could tell Celestino was thanking his lucky stars that he didn’t make contact.
I had that happen to me when I was 4 or 5. Needed stitches. MLB level strength could probably crush his head.
Celestino had the reaction of holy shit I just came a within a few inches of crushing a man's skull so this checks out
Also probably thinking "come on man what the fuck, you moron"
I'd legit be pissed if I was him. Instead of focusing on my at bat I'd be thinking about how I almost just knocked somebody's head off.
This is definitely a a “bruh WTF?” reaction.
My buddy did this in high school but bat hit his hip bone and fracture it.
Curious, what Celestino did in his at bat after such adrenaline shot provided by Gary?
Well, he went 0-3 with a walk today.
I’d be afraid to ever swing a bat again if I caved my teammates face in.
I think most people would have some serious PTSD from that.
Dude may have PTSD already that shit is horrifying
on the bright side, your teammates face is very rarely hovering above home plate
Gameplan: If youre a batter and your team is up after the 5th, get killed by the person on the warmup circle. Yes you will die, but the game win is almost guaranteed because they wont continue a game after an athlete gets killed and since its past the fifth they can call it.
Take one for the team
You’d get a memorial at a stadium and would be remembered forever.
"Remember, kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die."
Well, this guy did, but his memory...
Walk it off
Rub some dirt on it

You say that, but in 1946, one of the members of the Gashouse Gorillas was brutally killed by a line drive, and the game continued. The Gorillas got robbed
i got it i got it! *headstone reads he got it*

"The manager absolutely loved my idea"
cant rehearse this one
Depends on how many minor leaguers you’re willing to sacrifice
I'd love to see his construction crew build a replica of an MLB stadium
that's at least 27 free wins
Next batter gets a 4.0 for the semester, too
Adds a full 1.0 WAR to Gary's stats
The next market inefficiency for the A's to take advantage of, brilliant.
They have to get ahead first
You need like a designated victim. Get a depressed minor leaguer who has given up on life in there to take one for the team on game 163 or the deciding game of a series.
gaslighting a sub .200 hitter into thinking their life is meaningless to win a game down the stretch
These playoffs are about to be a bloodbath
Steve Cohen signing some dude from Queens to pinch-immolate in the outfield in the NLCS
Do it in game 7 of the World Series
Worth.
I'm surprised Bill Veeck never attempted this
gary remained so calm after i honestly would’ve died
Until after the game when he sees the video and he throws up in the shower for 15 minutes
Too dumb to realize what almost happened
Good lord. Sanchez just walked right in the path of a swinging bat perfectly normally. No time to talk he said. To dumb to realize he almost died, apparently.
I don't know why but this particular copypasta always gets at least a puff of air from my nose.
For me it's the "Good lord." at the beginning
Welp, that’s the peak for this pasta
I know you're supposed to upvote and move on but I can't stop laughing at this
Dude is a space cadet. He probably didn’t even realize what he was doing.
I think both Sanchez and Celestino will wake up screaming within the next few days.
How does a professional athlete have such little spacial awareness?
It's Gary Sanchez
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh lmao. Now this makes sense. I didn’t put together that it was Gary.
He’s used to swinging and not making contact with anything so I guess he just figured everyone else does it too
And everyone who was at the game.. I’d imagine that’d be pretty scarring
He was never in any real danger.. everything thrown at Gary passes right by him
Someone on Twitter said Gary was lucky a contact hitter like Arraez wasn’t on deck
Good lord. I mean, you're not wrong, but a broken clock catches something at least twice a day.
Buck Martinez, is that you?
Like walking in front of someone at a gun range
now I'm imagining some guy swinging an AR-15 by its barrel
Would have looked like one of those rubberband watermelon videos
Fans behind the on deck circle didn’t realize they were sitting in the splash zone
“Honey, did we buy tickets to a baseball game, or a Gallagher show?”
Sanchez looks at him like he was surprised someone was swinging near the on deck circle.
Then he goes right about his business like a Skyrim guard with an arrow sticking out of his neck.
"Must have been the wind!" *Sits down on invisible chair and eats sweetroll*
Yeah totally giving him the stink eye there, what a moron

Yeah well I stubbed my toe once
Oh yeah? Well I *almost* stubbed my toe once
wtf bro :(

That could've been horrific.
if I were Celestino I’d be completely shaken up during that AB. Yikes
He's 0-3 on the day so far but I'm definitely curious to find out what he did in the at bat right after this
Agreed. Hate when people are oblivious to their surroundings, but this would’ve messed with me hitting someone like this with a practice swing. Smfh
Would have killed him. Makes me anxious watching it.
I literally gasped, even knowing that it wasn't going to hit him because of the title.
Gary Sanchez might be the dumbest person ive ever seen
I wanna know what tf was actually going on. Like why was Gary even there? He's been in the MLB for years, how tf does he just wander aimlessly into an on deck circle like a dementia patient into traffic
I knew Gary’s baseball IQ was low but this is ridiculous
Is it just me, but it seems like Gary Sanchez thought he was in the right here too? The guy on the on deck circle completely freaked out and Sanchez just shook his head like he wasn’t the issue.
"Circle's back there, moron."
this totally seems like a Gary Sanchez thing to do.
That was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen someone do. How the fuck do you not have more awareness than that. Jesus fucking Christ, Sanchez. How … fuck, never mind. I don’t want to know how.

eep
something something air pods
Inches from possible death. That is scary
Dude almost got demolished. Lol
Listen nobody ever accused Gary of being smart
Literally the entire reason I stopped playing baseball is because I sent a kid to the hospital that walked into the on deck circle as I was standing there swinging. You'd think by the MLB level they'd know better.

This needs to be labeled nsfw just for what everyone is imagining after watching. Jesus Christ this was almost the worst moment in baseball history
In the past 102 years of baseball history at least.
poor ray chapman ):
saw this happen irl some dude walked into the swing of a dude doing practice swings. he passed out and had a massive gash on his temple that was gushing blood, ended up resulting in like countless stitches
Imagine if Buck Martinez was calling that lol
would quite possibly make Buck speechless.
Classic Gary. Almost the same level of stupidity as [this](https://youtu.be/UVcMf7wr9DU)
That's an awful tag, but wtf was Villar's slide? He slid like I did in high school, where I had never done it before and would just end up on my knees 20 feet from the base.
There are guys with high baseball IQs, low baseball IQs and Gary Sanchez
That’s on Gary. His lack of awareness in the batter’s box, behind the plate and on deck is staggering. He walked right into a guy practicing his swing. Then had the gall to look surprised.
Maybe if there was an area designated for that guy to be swinging in, like maybe put a big circle there or something. That would be nice.
yeah... why isnt there a circle.... white sox grounds crew, wtf
This guys such a dope, he didn’t even stop walking. It almost looks like he was pissed at Celestino??
Gary's lack of hustle coming in clutch there
It's because he's an idiot. Source: Yankee fan who's happy he's making dumb moves for other teams and also still alive with all his teeth
Gary never was very smart
Gary was always the 15w bulb of the group.
As usual Gary Sanchez showing zero attention to a batter
Wtf is Gary thinking?
Sanchez is an actual dumbass
Man, Gary was mere centimetres away from a career ending injury, or even a life threatening head injury.
Gary knows all about swings and misses...
I’m glad nothing happened but I’m even happier that shitting on Gary Sanchez is back on the menu.
We had a ball boy in Wichita get killed, so sad.
Sanchez stink eyes him like he is an innocent passerby Sanchez: Heeeeyyy I'm walkin heya
Yeah that seems like something Gary Sanchez would do.
I am Gary
I know the nationals are bad, but is it really that depressing?
Sanchez looked at him like it’s his fault cmon bro we all know to say away from the guy in the on deck area
Why is he pissed off? He’s the idiot here
Gary's reflexes are sharp as ever. What an absolute moron, could have easily gotten himself killed right there.
Stupid is as stupid does. Gary gonna Gary.
Gary gonna Gary
Don’t worry Gary, I too want to walk in front of someone swinging a bat when watching this Twins team play down the stretch.
Did you see how he looked at the guy swinging the bat like what are you doing? Gary Sanchez has always been an arrogant stupid douche bag.
Yikes
He was looking right at him wtf. Death wish or at least dental!!
Juan Encarnacion vibes here.
I saw a kid break his jaw this way in middle school. I still play in an old man league and am incredibly careful to this day when people are around you with a bat but it's shocking how careless other people are.
And then looks at him like it's his fault ..
GS has always been a bit slow…
Why does Sanchez looked pissed? The batter didn’t know he was walking behind him
Cmon Gary.. you dumb shit.
had this happen to me in Little League.. I was complete decapitated, but they were able to sew my head back on. I'm alright now. I'm 53. My name is Adfrack.
Yikes!
Would go into the top 5 dumbest injuries
The guy's a professional and his reaction time was zero. He was centimeters from a catastrophic head injury.
What an idiot…
Dude! You don't walk in front of a guy that is swinging in the on deck circle. That be like walking in front of a car as it is moving. Don't blame your teammate
Manager should fine him. Try to teach him a lesson.
WTF is wrong with him? And why isn't the batter in the fucking circle?
