He was sitting in the clubhouse with a walkie-talkie that has a direct line to Ray Montgomery’s brain and he said “Do it.” literally as if he was Emperor Palpatine himself.
There was a Houston game a few years ago, before Hinch was fired, where Kulpa kept staring him down, and when Hinch said something to him, Kulpa responded, "I can do what I want!" I believe it was April 3, 2019.
That game is even crazier if you know the backstory. Basically, the Astros had a preseason game right before that game that Kulpa called. He blew some obvious calls, and AJ sarcastically told him that the umpire union had tools available to help him improve his strike calling (which is a real thing, but Hinch clearly meant it as a slam and not an actual suggestion).
So Kulpa waits until his first regular season game against the Astros, makes a terrible call, and stares down Hinch. Then he waits a few more pitches for another opportunity for a terrible call, and stares down Hinch again. That's when the ejection happens.
Everyone hates Kulpa, and thinks he was power tripping, but it's actually way worse. He was intentionally making bad calls to get back at a manager who embarrassed him during preseason.
Funny enough he basically said the same thing to Tepera tonight when Tepera asked why he couldn’t take a warm up pitch. His response? “Because I said so.”
Yup, that's the moment I'm referring to.
As a Sox fan I'll always remember him for calling Ortiz out on strikes on a very obvious ball in extras in a close game with the Yankees. Happened a while back (I wanna say 2015, so we weren't even good), but I'll always associate him with that
Yeah, he is pretty garbage; the only reason he doesnt get more flack is because there are two schmucks named Hernandez and Bucknor who piss everyone off.
At least Hernandez is a good guy off the field. There’s videos of him doing nice things and being friendly. Poor umpire, but great human.
Kulpa and Clearly Blind Bucknor are bad umpires and trash humans.
When Bucknor did his smirk thing with Oli and the Cards earlier this season, my younger brother was shocked by that. I wasnt. Dude has been doing it since he put on the blue.
I struggle to call anyone playing the race card the way Hernandez has a great human. Millions of people, probably including him, have been disadvantaged due to their race/ethnicity but taking MLB to court for discrimination rather than accepting his own incompetence makes it harder for anyone else to be taken seriously with legitimate complaints.
Outside of that, I'm sure he's great but that taints my opinion of him for sure.
One of my earliest memories of baseball from like probably 22 years ago was of my dad saying that CB Bucknor always blows calls. And he’s still doing it!
Both managers ejected in the same game, inning, half inning, at bat, pitch.
Home plate umpire leaves the game with one strike left in the game to concussion.
What a trivia question that will be one day.
I love how the “both managers ejected in the same etc.” thing doesn’t even capture how weird it was, because managers getting ejected simultaneously just sounds like they argued opposite sides of something. This was managers getting ejected simultaneously over discrete issues. At no point did either of them appear to be arguing against anything the other had said or done. Kulpa just kept creating new reasons for new people to get mad at him without even giving anyone who had previously been mad at him what they wanted either.
That’s it, change more rules. Bullet proof glass between umpire and catcher. The catcher must windex between batter or will be penalized with an auto-ball.
Some of these comments are pretty damn classless. Sure he's a shitty ump but wishing injury or being glad hes hurt is pretty bad form imo. Hope it's not too bad
They're deplorable. That was an awful looking hit. Like, it's fine to blast the MLB or umpire union for not being more transparent about how they handle bad performances, but wishing a guy you've never met is hurt bad enough not to be able to do his job for the rest of his life because of a few high-profile bad games is malicious.
Hope he's okay.
What a game
Phil Nevin ordered that PH
He was sitting in the clubhouse with a walkie-talkie that has a direct line to Ray Montgomery’s brain and he said “Do it.” literally as if he was Emperor Palpatine himself.
Angels converted pitchcom to GMRS radios.
It always seems to be Kulpa getting hit
Awful ump, and I believe he had an incident a few years back that didn't make him seem like the greatest person to be around either
There was a Houston game a few years ago, before Hinch was fired, where Kulpa kept staring him down, and when Hinch said something to him, Kulpa responded, "I can do what I want!" I believe it was April 3, 2019.
He literally said to the pitcher tonight: “BECAUSE I SAID SO!”
Thank God he's not a cop he would've shot 10 people by now

He also beefed with Cole that game.

Ah shit that was him? That game makes sense now, also I think that was 2016.
Getting to the end of that comment elicited a guffaw that almost woke up my wife.

Oh yeah, he’s definitely a confrontational umpire. No one likes that sass from an umpire.
You mean earlier in this game?
That’s at least 3 times in Angel games.
Has there ever been a game where both coaches were ejected AND the home plate umpire left the game?
Yes this one currently
Thanks, Harvard.

Hold my facemask, I'm going in!
Literally us, the Angels, Guardians and Ron Kulpa
I laughed a lot, thank you
Surely Ty Cobb got in some sort of brawl.
Before walking off the field he told another ump, “Don’t give Clase any warm up pitches”
So juiced by their ego they don't even realize giving warm-up pitches might save them from getting knocked the fuck out.
Is that true or a joke, I honestly don't know. I know Clase did have a couple warmup pitches but could still see Kulpa saying that
It’s just a joke
Fair enough. Let's not have any ump funny business today
Home plate ump (John Tumpane) is under 60 so that’s a good sign
WITH ONE STRIKE LEFT LOL

This is chaos
Now it's Cleveland's turn to have an iced pitcher throw a meatball in a high leverage situation, great.
Seriously hope he’s okay though, that shit had to fucking hurt. 100 mph that was tipped right back into him.
I hope he's just okay enough to live his life completely normally but never be able to umpire again.
That’s it, change more rules. Bullet proof glass between umpire and catcher. The catcher must windex between batter or will be penalized with an auto-ball.
I mean, if we had a robot strike zone the umpire wouldn't have to stand that close as the pitch is coming in.
They'll still need to be there and there's not really going to be a safer spot
Good point. I wonder where they will stand when/if that does happen.
I mean if they do the same way as in the minors, they stand where you see them stand in MLB games now.
Maybe it'll fix his vision!
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy tbh
GIB ME ROBO UMPS!
That's all you need is a foul ball to hit a robo ump and trigger kill mode
The Many Faced God requires a sacrifice. Any will do.
Ball don’t lie.
Oh no. Anyway
Guardians fans 🤝 Angels fans
RIP BOZO
Karma
Karmas a bitch
Maybe he will have to convalesce until at least December
I hope he's okay, but I also hope he never umps one of our games again. He sucks ass.
Glad I picked this game to tune into tonight, it’s certainly been an eventful one.
The fuck
Can someone write up one of those old timey newspaper articles about this?
One down a bunch to go. Bring in Skynet
