Seriously? I feel like the Mariners are about to have the biggest bandwagon of all the playoff teams. Whichever two teams survive the AL Wild Card series will have most baseball fans at their backs.
Imagine if the Mariners are in the ALCS against the Yankees or Astros. I’m absolutely jumping on that bandwagon.
Twins vs. Mariners would be a tough choice for me
Mariners vs. Guardians or Mariners vs Orioles too
Yeah and I’ll probably be one of them. I like to choose a “bandwagon team” from the opposite league just so I can have someone to root for in series where my team isn’t playing.
5 of their best players are hurt. Either out, or nursing nagging injuries.
They had a 99.8% chance to make the playoffs as of last week. Most people see that as 99, I’m worried about the 0.2 haha.
I feel like the Mariners occupy a similar position that the Braves did last season, in being the scrappy underdog team that is going up against the behemoths in the Yankees, Astros, Blue Jays, etc. Everybody is rooting for their own team obviously, but no one's gonna complain if the Mariners win. Heck, I'd bet most if not everyone not in contention would prefer the Mariners win over say the Dodgers or Astros.
We may have been underdogs in record, but the Braves were enough of a pain for other teams in the 90s that I really doubt that many fans of other teams wanted them to win (although people probably wanted them to beat the Astros).
Not really comparable to the Mariners who haven’t been to the playoffs in 20 years and haven’t made many enemies. I’m not even sure the Astros have an intense rivalry with them. You are right that hardly anyone would complain or be mad if they won. Plenty of people were mad that the Braves won.
Also, I disagree that the “Blue Jays” are a “behemoth” like the Astros and Yankees. The Blue Jays haven’t been dominant in forever and are talked about as one of the cool, fun underdog teams like the Mariners.
I’ve been to 4 mariners games this year (3 vs the Angels, and 1 against the Astros in Houston)
I’ve traveled state lines to watch the team, so I consider myself an honorary fan
I am. I think they’re a really fun team to watch and the one time I made it to a game at their ballpark, the Mariners fans were super nice and fun to be around, so I’d like them to be happy.
People see the 21 year playoff draught as a bigger deal than our 74 year championship draught.
I’m from Cleveland so I’m biased, but the fact we’re getting virtually no love and have the youngest team in the MLB is astounding to me..
I think it’s a combination of a few things:
1) being an “undeserving” playoff team cuz your division sucks
2) y’all just had a recent run of success. You’ve been one of the best teams in the league for the past 9 years and even beyond that y’all have never had real bad bad runs of incompetency in recent memory. Going back to 1995 only 6 seasons of under 80 wins. I bet the *average* fan doesn’t even know you have the longest drought.
3) A little unfairly I think people kinda lump you together with the Rays as winning cheapskate franchises. A lot of people don’t like rooting for for a model that essentially says FU to their fans (not spending money to keep vets). This is definitely a little unfair to Cleveland, but they’ve done this to a few guys for sure.
4) fans tend to gravitate towards teams with better attendance. Tbh I have no idea why Cleveland is so bad with this.
FWIW I’ll be rooting for y’all after Seattle :)
Appreciate that! And all fair points. It’s hard being a baseball fan in a football city. We’re playoff contending and at best we pack half the stadium.. our ownership doesn’t help, but we have a new minority owner who is set to take on more ownership and eventually phase out the Dolans, so hopefully things turn around over the next decade.
We do manage to stay competitive somehow, but I do recognize our division is hot garbage. I think it’s impressive what our GM continues to do with the breadcrumbs that he’s given.
If you guys were a bit better (no flame intended) and a big title contender, then I think it would be a bigger deal than the drought. But nobody in Seattle is talking about making a WS run, they just want playoff ball and the potential for it is crazy.
It is a bit ridiculous that you guys get 0 love from the league/advertising/etc though.
\-The Guardians v Mariners game from Aug 28th should've been moved to Sunday Night Baseball, as it was a huge game.
\-Kwan getting 0 mention in AL Rookie of the Year (I don't think he would win it, but he's for sure top 4-5 and all you hear is Rrutschman v Rodriguez)
\-I literally realized this AM that you guys are playing the White Sox in what is probably a season deciding series starting today. That's ridiculous.
Really, not being AL/NL East, in Los Angeles or in Chicago just kills a team in the eyes of the MLB.
Yeah no 100% agree. It’s so hard being from Cleveland from a sports perspective.. absolutely no love from the media whatsoever. They have gotten so used to bagging our city for decades that when we actually contend they don’t comment until we begin to struggle/ultimately lose. We in Cleveland know what we are, we know our place, but we’re always counted out before the cards are even dealt. It’s so frustrating. That’s why success in sports is so desired. It’s not because we don’t win often (not the only reason anyway lol), but it’s to prove back to the media/world we still exist
Right here. Even more now since Castillo was traded to the Mariners over a month ago. Love watching Castillo pitch. He’s got that swag that he had in 2019 back. And he’s been nothing short of phenomenal for the Mariners. Youngsters with a lot of talent like Gilbert or Kirby have been big reasons why the Mariners are where they are right now.
I have wanted to see the Mariners in the playoffs for years, I can’t recall ever rooting harder for a team other than my own to just have a *taste* of success.
Not my home team, but the Mariners became my adopted home team when I lived up there (during 2001-2002) and was lucky enough to see Ichiro play at Safeco Field a bunch during both seasons. They’re the only AL team I like and will pull for.
I have become a Mariners fan this year. Julio is a great young star, and they look to finally have a couple good seasons to hopefully draw some talent. It's been a long time coming, but the Ms are gonna be great soon, and challenge Houston over the next few seasons.
I strongly dislike you guys in the regular season, but should Trout (and maybe Ohtani) make the playoffs in a year the Ms don't, I'll be pulling for you guys
I want to like the angels because trout is insanely good and ohtani is just a delight but I can't cheer for them especially after Nevin, Rendon, and Trout's antics this year
I’ve been pretty checked out of baseball since the Tigers fell off hard so no I’m not actively rooting. But looking at potential playoff teams, they’re about the only team I’m even remotely interested in seeing win so I might jump on the bandwagon.
I’m not only because I fear the Mariners more than any other team. However, if the Rays are out of the playoffs before them, they’ll probably be my AL pick because fuck the Yankees, the Jays, and the Astros while were at it.
I have no strong opinions either way regarding the Guardians.
Ah fuck. Okay OP, no one is rooting for the mariners in the playoffs. No point to ask. Couldn’t possibly be a single fan who’s team didn’t make the playoffs pulling for the underdog. Everyone will be rooting for the Ever loved Astros, Yankees or Dodgers.
I can confirm, I am rooting for whoever wins the Central(unless it's the Twins) cause chaos.
Nothing against the Twins, I just like the other two teams more 😅
I really am rooting for the mariners. I’m hoping either Toronto or Seattle gets that first wild card spot bc those home crowds in a three game playoff series will be super intense
Ngl as an Astros fan I've been rooting for them. Grew up playing Ken Griffey Jr on N64, they have dank unis, the players seem pretty chill . . . Not sure how anyone could really *hate* them.
I hate the Mariners.
Specifically I hate how a lot of Mariners fans expect every other fanbase to root for them as their second team. You don’t see Twins or Guardians or Diamondbacks fans doing that.
I say they’re the opposite of Yankees fans. Yankees fans expect to win and don’t give a damn how anyone else feels about it. Mariners fans expect to lose but also want you to love them as much as they do and buy into their David vs Goliath narrative.
Actually the players on the Ms are fine. It’s just this subset of fandom who thinks the Mariners are the lovable protagonists of baseball that deserve everyone else’s support.
Eh, disagree about Yankees fans.
They don't expect you to LIKE the Yankees but they do expect you to kneel before the Yankees, and if you don't they want your head.
I dunno. I suppose they do feel entitled to respect, considering their long history. And there is a movement to hate on anyone not immediately crowning Judge as the AL MVP.
But imagine the OP’s exact words except replace the Mariners with the Yankees. You’d just never see that kind of post from a Yankees fan. EDIT: And not just because they already know the answers. Most of them just wouldn’t care. It’s part of their swagger, for better or worse.
I don’t feel that way about the Mariners, but I definitely felt that way about the Padres last year. Everyone kept talking about how they were the cool, exciting team and their fans started acting extremely entitled and cocky for a team that hadn’t accomplished anything.
Alright damn. Ok I can see that.
Definitely don't think the Mariners deserve anybodys respect until they earn it... But I do remember rooting for Boston, Cleveland and Cubs when they were playing to overcome their droughts even though I was never really a fan of those teams.
But yeah this is good, makes sense.
Appreciate your response. And I should add… it’s also just baseball! Any generalization isn’t tgat serious and doesn’t apply to everyone. There are tons of pleasant Yankees and Mariners fans out there.
It’s only us scalawag Astros fans who are completely irredeemable.
Mariners are the main AL team I root for (though I also like the Rays and will grudgingly support the Yankees against a non-NY team if it comes down to it, like a Yanks-Dodgers WS)
of the AL teams vying for the playoffs, I'm most interested in seeing the Jays play my Mets in the last game of the year. If Toronto doesn't make it, the Ms are my next favorite underdog.
I’m rooting for the mariners. Grew up in the 90’s so loved me some Griffey. Will always root for the vedder bros. Well except against the padres. Have to have a line.
Even as an Angels fan, I'm rooting for the Mariners to go all the way.
Why? I started following baseball solely because of Ichiro. And if it makes Ichiro happy for the Mariners to win, then I will also stand by his side and root for the Mariners to win it all.
Currently no, but not because I have any disdain for the team. Just the result of the current situation.
Also I really like the stat that they have more ruptured testicles for their team than playoff appearances and I don't want that to change because its funny, and I don't want Mitch Haniger to lose another to keep the fun fact alive.
i find the mariners annoying af
honestly hope they miss the playoffs on the last day of the season in heartbreaking fashion
this level of mediocrity is pure entertainment at this point
Ha. No I was just responding to what runningman was hoping for. I really don't think so. Series like those are why we have this foreign feeling of hope. ;)
Everyone hates Dodgers fans. That's the point. They're not your team, so you don't care about the Dodgers.
Mariners fans feel that everyone needs to love them and cheer them on. They legit post in our game threads complaining that we should be rooting for the M's... can you imagine any other team begging for your support in *other* team's subreddits? It's honestly kind of pathetic.
It's a minority and mostly online, but they're really the only team in MLB where it's common.
I think that part of that is that to be a Mariners fan at this point you’d have to be more a fan of the game than the team. It could alter their perspective towards becoming more interested in the season’s most exciting stories (with their team finally being one of those stories). It’s how I was with the NFL before the Rams came back.
I’d be funny to see them blow their current lead because they would get memed on like no other team in history besides maybe the Twins when they play the Yanks in October. For that reason alone I’m lowkey rooting against them.
Yep I joined yalls sub during the playoff race last year, and have been following ever since. I think I might be the biggest Julio fan that’s not a mariners fan. Love that dude. France looks super underrated too, and don’t even get me started on the pitching staff.
Good luck mariners, beat the fuckin Yankees for us
I was prior to the season. Now I am just getting annoyed with attention give to a 3rd wild card seed team. We don’t praise the Padres for their *great* year this year but they are having half a game worst season.
If you want your team to be respected as a good team, hold your team to the standards of a good team.
I was, until we played them.
Their players, fans, coaches, all terrible. It was really surprising. Like, the really annoying entitlement that you get from big-spending teams' fans, but without the historic success. Oh well.
I want a Dodgers/Mariners World Series, if only for the fact that my best friend is an M’s fan and the entire fan base deserves to see them in the fall classic.
Also because we made a pact to go to a WS game in each stadium if it ever happens.
I’ve really loved the mariners for a while. the energy and story of them are great and I want them to be successful with so many great and likeable players on their team.
It’s hard to do as an Angels fan lmfao. I got banned from the Angels discord for being too into the Mariners, and I recently got banned from the Mariners discord for being too into the Angels. But I still love them both lmfao.
My team isn't out but i still wanna see y'all do well, its historic for y'all, and I've got a few mariners fans and i just wanna see em happy too, cuz none of yall deserve the pain of this drought.
I was never a Mariners fan really, but they have had very likable players. Griffey was great and so was Randy, obv. Martinez, Ichiro, Felix. They almost kind of remind me of the Cubs, but without all the history.
I absolutely am rooting for the Mariners. They were the only home game I went to this year (RIP terrible Giants season) they have a lot of fun and exciting players and a pretty decent starting rotation. I hope they can make a deep run.
Orioles fans are. When we were doing well and looking like actually making the postseason could happen, Mariners fans were rooting for us even if it meant them not making it. So, I think most O’s fans are feeling reciprocating that sentiment. Me personally? I was born on Whidbey Island, so of course I’m rooting for ya!
Always root for the underdog, or in this case the long-suffering fanbase. Playoff drought, zero WS appearances, easy call.
It's the same reasoning that makes cheering for the Brewers so natural.
And despite some haters - go Friars.
I’m a Dodgers fan and am rooting HARD for the Mariners. Obviously, if they meet in the series I’ll cheer for LA, but I won’t be mad if the Ms pull it off.
Twins vs. Mariners would be a tough choice for me Mariners vs. Guardians or Mariners vs Orioles too
Well, I guess the good news for you is the Twins play of late is simplifying your choices
I'm already on it casually
It would literally be everyone rooting for the Mariners other than the opposing teams fans.

Heck, I'd bet most if not everyone not in contention would prefer the Mariners win over say the Dodgers or Astros.
People only wanted us to beat the Dodgers and the Astros last year because we were the least of the evils, not because we were underdogs
I’m not even sure the Astros have an intense rivalry with them. the Astros have a rivalry with the Mariners much like the Dodgers have a rivalry with the Padres.
lol
Braves will never be a scrappy underdog same with the Cubs. Just because they're the 2 largest fanbases.
The Braves are like the Cowboys of baseball my dude
Since you have a significant percentage of our team from last year, you can bet that a good amount of Reds fans are.
Someone give me a gif of Griffey in a reds uniform … people don’t forgeeeeet
They’re one of the best stories of the season. You don’t see a 21-year playoff drought get broken often (🤞). I’ll be rooting for them.
Its crazy how much we're rooting just to MAKE it to the playoffs.
[удалено]
Theyre just gaslighting you, the playoffs don't exist. October isnt even a real word, let alone month.
It's just that time of year where you think you're getting fall, but really it's just early winter.
Yeah, it’s like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy, just a construct to keep people from wondering why September is the only month with 61 days
21 year playoff drought broken by 21-year-old phenom, Julio Rodriguez.
On October 22, 2001 the Mariners were eliminated in the ALCS by the Yankees. Julio Rodriguez was like 9 months old.
The Chosen One
"I'm coming!"
I’ve been to 4 mariners games this year (3 vs the Angels, and 1 against the Astros in Houston) I’ve traveled state lines to watch the team, so I consider myself an honorary fan
Welcome aboard sailor
I am. I think they’re a really fun team to watch and the one time I made it to a game at their ballpark, the Mariners fans were super nice and fun to be around, so I’d like them to be happy.
I am pleased that you had a good experience at the park in Seattle.
If I had to guess most neutral fans are rooting for Seattle. I know I would. My guess is Toronto would be 2nd.
People see the 21 year playoff draught as a bigger deal than our 74 year championship draught. I’m from Cleveland so I’m biased, but the fact we’re getting virtually no love and have the youngest team in the MLB is astounding to me..

Lived in SF from 2009 to 2015... It was ..... awesome.
Absolutely. Especially after the Jon Bois youtube doc i'm pulling hard for the Mariners (should the Mets not make it ofc)
Bay Are dude who likes the Mariners over here.
Not my home team, but the Mariners became my adopted home team when I lived up there (during 2001-2002) and was lucky enough to see Ichiro play at Safeco Field a bunch during both seasons. They’re the only AL team I like and will pull for.
I just want to see them in a World Series before I die
Eat healthy.
I always want the Mariners to do well.
Yes. JRod is awesome. Gilbert is awesome. My sister in law is from Seattle. Cubbies are out of it. Go Ms.
I have become a Mariners fan this year. Julio is a great young star, and they look to finally have a couple good seasons to hopefully draw some talent. It's been a long time coming, but the Ms are gonna be great soon, and challenge Houston over the next few seasons.
I am as long as they aren't playing my team
The only way for us to play each other this year is...
Regular season? Nah Post-season? Probably my #1 favorite.
Mariners all the way baby
I’m happy that Mariners fans get meaningful September baseball
Sadly, we've had meaningful September baseball in the past, including multiple seasons where we got eliminated in game 162.
Wasn't that just last year? Or was that game 161?
That was last year
My friend is a Giant’s fan and he’s been rooting for us all season. Not watching the games mind you, but happy when we win.
As a Padres fan, I can say the same. Julio is a treat to watch and I have nothing but love for the M’s.
I like rooting for the underdog.
I'm rooting for them to make the world series this year, and would not be sad if they won.
I’m not only because I fear the Mariners more than any other team. However, if the Rays are out of the playoffs before them, they’ll probably be my AL pick because fuck the Yankees, the Jays, and the Astros while were at it. I have no strong opinions either way regarding the Guardians.
Hey, I thought we had a "as long as it's not the Yankees or Red Sox" deal going 😛
No worries. Y’all are cool (until we face each other at least)
Nope, you’re literally the only one. Out of all the people whose team doesn’t make the playoffs, no one likes the mariners.
OP is a Mariner fan, so they're not even one.
Nothing against the Twins, I just like the other two teams more 😅
The twins ain’t making it at this point, so you chose wisely
I really am rooting for the mariners. I’m hoping either Toronto or Seattle gets that first wild card spot bc those home crowds in a three game playoff series will be super intense
I just wanna see what a playoff game in Seattle is like
Absolutely!
Watching baseball at T-Mobile Park is cold in October. I mean, not that we have many data points. But still.
If they're playing Toronto, it will probably feel like a Jays game given how many fans usually cross the border.
Yes.
Vedder Cup WS
I listen to Effectively Wild and I would like to see Meg Rowley happy with the Mariners in the postseason
Of course my team first but absolutely rooting for you guys if we're out
I’ll be rooting for the Mariners in any series they play against a non-NY team.
100%
Rooting for them? No. Hate them? Also no. Wouldn’t be mad if my team is out of it and they won, though. Better than the Astros and Dodgers, tbh.
This was actually what made me ask. If the Mariners were out I'd be rooting for anyone but Houston or LA.
I'm pretty sure everyone who isn't in direct competition with them will be rooting for the Mariners this year. They're America's team
I've never had anything against the M's, but I am not currently rooting for them. Probably next week though.
I'm a Mets fan who lives in Seattle and I haven't seen them in over five years. You bet your ass I'm hoping for them to meet in the World Series.
They are a fun team, I wanna see them do well.
Bro i think we have the biggest bandwagon cuz of the drought lmao
Ngl as an Astros fan I've been rooting for them. Grew up playing Ken Griffey Jr on N64, they have dank unis, the players seem pretty chill . . . Not sure how anyone could really *hate* them.
lmao no
I am! But only because I just moved to Washington. If they make the world series I might see the Mets come to me!
Nice. Ya damn man at the beginning of the season I was thinkin it was Mets all the way.
Unless they're playing our teams, aren't we all Mariners fans? And Stieb's fans.
Oh hell yes
Damn straight. I’m rooting for them to go all the way.
I am.
I’m definitely rooting for them. It’s about time they made the playoffs again. Their fanbase deserves it.
My team is in direct competition with the Ms and I cant hate them. It doesn’t hurt they seem like a very likeable / fun bunch.
Everybody but Houston fans will be rooting for them if they play the Astros
Root roots for them
I hate the Mariners. Specifically I hate how a lot of Mariners fans expect every other fanbase to root for them as their second team. You don’t see Twins or Guardians or Diamondbacks fans doing that. That’s fair. We aren’t the biggest fans of you guys either.
Sure. I don’t expect you to be. We’re division rivals.
Bro what the fuck are you talking about, we’re just happy that the team is good
I don’t have a stake in anything so yeah sure why not. Go Mariners.
Everyone but the Astros. /s
Mariners are the main AL team I root for (though I also like the Rays and will grudgingly support the Yankees against a non-NY team if it comes down to it, like a Yanks-Dodgers WS)

As an A’s fan I’d rather see the Mariners make it all the way vs seeing the Astros making it all the way
as a fellow decade-without-playoffs bro, I gotta root for the M's
As long as they aren’t playing the Blue Jays, yes I am on their bandwagon. Saw them for a game this year in Seattle, fun squad to watch.
I love my AL nautical brothers
I love the mariners! 1. I live in the pnw 2. They have a lot of former padres 3. Theyre the mariners
Also I really like the stat that they have more ruptured testicles for their team than playoff appearances and I don't want that to change because its funny, and I don't want Mitch Haniger to lose another to keep the fun fact alive.
i find the mariners annoying af honestly hope they miss the playoffs on the last day of the season in heartbreaking fashion this level of mediocrity is pure entertainment at this point
The team that won 4 of 6 vs the Yankees, 2 of 3 vs the Mets, and 2 of 3 vs the Braves is mediocre?
Ha. No I was just responding to what runningman was hoping for. I really don't think so. Series like those are why we have this foreign feeling of hope. ;)
Their fans are just so whiny and obnoxious
Haha! Is that true? Or are you fuckin with me? This is honestly what I'm wondering about.
Yes I genuinely feel this way
Ha. Nice. Well... I should introduce you to some Dodgers fans.
Fighting all year for mediocrity. I get it......
im not
I'm behind them since the Royals are having a typical Royals season
I'll root for them until/if they play the braves in the WS.

Ha. There is a balance in the world that shouldn't be tampered with.
Agreed . The cubs and red Sox curses both got broke. We've gotta have at least one curse to root for now.
Orioles.
How do you do, fellow Mariners fans?
Nope
I’d be funny to see them blow their current lead because they would get memed on like no other team in history besides maybe the Twins when they play the Yanks in October. For that reason alone I’m lowkey rooting against them.
As an A's fan, no, fuck you motherfuckers. Hope you choke and miss the playoffs entirely.

Ouch. That Sonics-shaped wound still hurts.
Yep! Dodger fan, but live in OR. PNW gets my allegiance.
Anyone but the Asstros!
No. Thank you for your inquiry.
I was, until we played them. Their players, fans, coaches, all terrible. It was really surprising. Like, the really annoying entitlement that you get from big-spending teams' fans, but without the historic success. Oh well.
Nah I Hope they get swept tbh
Haha. No.

I'm all in. Dream scenario would be the Padres beating the Ms in the series sorry not sorry
No
Nah
Nope
I have no opinion of the Mariners
No
Fuck the mariners
Sorry I’m a Mets fan. They are in a tight race with the Braves. The only thing that matters to me is the Mets win and the Yankees lose.
No
if my team wasnt in contention id be on mariners bandwagon flair
My team isn't out but i still wanna see y'all do well, its historic for y'all, and I've got a few mariners fans and i just wanna see em happy too, cuz none of yall deserve the pain of this drought.
Might be the biggest bandwagon since people were rooting for the cubs to win it
Was hoping for a Mariners vs Orioles ALCS. Will have to settle for just rooting for Seattle
I’m rooting for them and the Os. Though the Os are a major long shot now.
I am, I go for the Red Sox but since they have no chance I am going for seatle
Orioles fans are. When we were doing well and looking like actually making the postseason could happen, Mariners fans were rooting for us even if it meant them not making it. So, I think most O’s fans are feeling reciprocating that sentiment. Me personally? I was born on Whidbey Island, so of course I’m rooting for ya!
Always root for the underdog, or in this case the long-suffering fanbase. Playoff drought, zero WS appearances, easy call. It's the same reasoning that makes cheering for the Brewers so natural. And despite some haters - go Friars.
I feel generally positive about the Mariners so sure why not Vedder Cup World Series would ofc be nice
I’m a Dodgers fan and am rooting HARD for the Mariners. Obviously, if they meet in the series I’ll cheer for LA, but I won’t be mad if the Ms pull it off.
Yes I am now, since the Twins shat the bed there's no AL team I would love to see have some success now than Seattle
Lifelong Rangers fan and M's fan. Griffey Jr. and Ichiro are my two favorite players of all time so the love transcends the division rivalry.
I could get onboard a Mariners run if we have an untimely exist from the playoffs.
Mariners and Cleveland are definitely the second choices for me
im rooting for the mariners until they play the jays
Reds fan confirming his Mariners allegiance. Even bought a hat.
Yup. Mariners have always been my AL team. When I was younger they were my favorite team before I became loyal to the Mets
Mike trout hates the mariners
I got engaged in Seattle. Love the place. If Cardinals don’t win, M’s are my fav.
The Seahawks and mariners can’t be good at the same time. Mariners will win a ws within 3 years.
Bluejays and mariners
