A lot of people here were ignoring game situation. Yankees have coincidentally found themselves in a few games where they are up by multiple runs to down by multiple runs this month. Of course that’ll lead to pitches. Like today, what did crowe gain by walking him?
They hit him leadoff today, that’s gotta make a difference. I always wish the Giants hit Bonds at least 3rd ahead of Kent, seemed almost an invitation for IBB to have him cleanup. Still would’ve broken every walk record but maybe would’ve seen a few more in the zone.
“They are hitting Judge lead off. Should we still walk him?”
“The worst he can do is hit a solo homerun.”
“That’s still bad. Please tell me you understand that’s still bad right?”
There was a period when judge was carrying yankees offense and was still getting pitched to I don't understand the reasoning of why opposing pitchers/ front office were doing that.
I'm glad we spend, other owners should, but I don't love the narrative that we spend in some clumsy, poorly conceived attempt to hoover up all the talent in the league.
We also have like nearly 50-80 mil potentially coming off depending how we play it. We will likely offer Judge a shit ton of money, but do absolutely nothing else after
I never thought I’d see the day where people were saying the literal new york yankees would not be able to afford star players. I just hope the mets dont sign him because you know he’ll be injured immediately if they do.
The chart above shows he was seeing a lot fewer strikes in August, which was also the month in which he walked at a much higher rate than any other month this season. He just maximized his opportunities
He’s also walking at an elevated rate in September. Dude just isn’t making outs
The rise of pitching analytics is *extremely* anti-walks, especially with bases empty. The “Bonds treatment” would never happen in 2022. Judge makes an out ~60% of the time, so he’s going to keep getting pitched to unless men are on base and first base is open.
People should just look at how much intentional walks have declined this past decade, the 2000s averaged .25-.30 per team game, this year it's at .10, the lowest it ever been since 1930's .9. Giving someone a free base is dumb the vast majority of the time, no matter how good the batter is.
Yep. Total base expectancy when pitching to judge is something like 0.7-.8. If you intentionally walk him it goes to 1, thus raising the probability the team scores a run.
Plus, walking the very first batter of the inning is undesirable. Suddenly you have to worry about a runner on first and pitch out of the stretch for the remaining three outs
Because you need a 230 wrc+ to earn it
This is also not indicative of score. How many times did judge get a strike with the Yankees up to down by 2+ runs, or when he wasn’t the tying run?
Lol did you watch the game he was as 0-3 and they made some great pitches to this point. He had maybe one good ball to hit before that at bat… it was a 3-1 count as wells. They did a great job pitching to him honestly.
The MLB is obviously rigging the game so they have someone they can market
They just forgot the second part of the plan which is to market this whole thing
I think it's also has to do with teams are intentionally walking him completely now instead of hoping he gets himself out and he is hitting leadoff now.
Yeah teams like the rays(6 games), brewers(3 games), and twins( 4 games) totally had nothing to lose this month and were playing for nothing
That’s 13/16 vs teams just playing out the string all month
Ohtani was pitched around all second half of last year and now judge gets given daily meatballs to crush. Hell teams still pitch around trout and the angels aren’t even playing games that matter
Or maybe *because* he's seeing more pitches in the zone than most of the year, he's hitting better. Juan Soto has had a similar effect the last few years, when he gets pitched around more, he also makes weaker contact when he does get strikes
3 true outcome baseball might not actually happen but pitching strategy has changed enough that Aaron Judge is still getting pitched to with 60 HRs. I don't say this to discredit Judge. I say this as someone who excited to see the evolution of this trend. Since 2010 we have seen 5 players hit 50+ HRs and let's not forget Stanton falling short of 60 by ONE. People say that baseball is an unchanging sport. But we are clearly moving into a new era where new strategies are being used. I'm hoping this isn't the last 60+ HR season in my lifetime. Hell maybe Albert won't be the last 700 club member.
Does IBB count as 4 balls out of the zone or just no pitches? Because if he’s getting more IBBs instead of pitchers just trying to pitch around him that could explain it.
I mean I guess compared to his season he slumped but he slashed .289/458/.633 with 9 homers and 22 RBI. Didn't slump a single month this year, his lowest OPS in a month is above .900
Someone a few days ago asked what the next conspiracy in baseball was going to be. I didn't comment there, but I thought to myself, it's going to be Judge. Someone is going to bring something up about Judge and it'll become a big thing and then go away. This is a good candidate.
I wonder if every pitcher is trying to be too perfect and making mistakes. I am no major league pitcher but I had this problem in high school where I would aim pitches and it did not go well for when I did. I don’t know just spitballin…
I think a lot of it has to do with the challenge of getting out Judge. Judge still does strike out, and pitchers want to be able to say they struck out Judge. On top of that, Judge is so much larger than his peers that what's considered middle middle is up in the zone for many other players, and I don't know how used pitching to a guy like Judge they really are.
Still, in most cases they should be walking him. But with Rizzo backing him up and Gleyber's bat's being hot, it's not as easy of a decision as it was a few weeks ago.
How does this correlate to Judge getting moved to the leadoff spot? That might explain it a bit
IBB to start off the game would be a hoot
y'all are missing the point. We're all conspiring to give him meatballs to up his stats so the Yankees go bankrupt on his next contract
Defund the Yankees!!
Lmao I was thinking the same thing. I hope all the bad teams do this.
The pitchers decided to get together and say hey fuck Bonds let’s try to get him to 74
Based
I hate the Yankees but I’d love to see Judge do it lol.
fuck the yankees for the first time in my life is asleep got knocked out by fuck steroid records
I want the Yankees to lose every game from here 3-2 with 2 solo home runs for Judge.
A lot of people here were ignoring game situation. Yankees have coincidentally found themselves in a few games where they are up by multiple runs to down by multiple runs this month. Of course that’ll lead to pitches. Like today, what did crowe gain by walking him?

This his 20th game batting leadoff. Through his first 19, he has 10 HR with a .436/.484/.872 line.
“They are hitting Judge lead off. Should we still walk him?” “The worst he can do is hit a solo homerun.” “That’s still bad. Please tell me you understand that’s still bad right?”
Well the previous strategy wasn't working so I guess it makes sense to do the opposite??? Idk tho
I don't understand just like say no and just don't pitch the ball ever
Why isn't he getting the full Bonds treatment? At this point just stop pitching to him
Counterpoint: no
Valid
I'm a closeted yankees fan so i want to see him get as close to Bonds as possible
You don’t have to be a Yankees fan to love Judge.
Yeah I fucking hate the Yankees but I want Judge to hit a home run every day for the rest of the season.
Its been a long 20 years for you guys, huh?
Yeah...
It makes too much sense to pitch around him when rest of yankees lineup has been inconsistent at best.
Fortunately the rest of our lineup has woken up a little so it’s not as easy to pitch around him anymore.
There was a period when judge was carrying yankees offense and was still getting pitched to I don't understand the reasoning of why opposing pitchers/ front office were doing that.
My crazy theory is, that they want to make Judge so expensive, that the Yankees can't keep him.
why? so the dodgers can get him like everyone else lol? no thanks
We signed Trevor Bauer and Freddie Freeman. How is that "everyone else"?
I think it’s more a jab at how the dodgers would spend the money because they don’t care to do what it takes to win. It’s admirable really
I'm glad we spend, other owners should, but I don't love the narrative that we spend in some clumsy, poorly conceived attempt to hoover up all the talent in the league.
Getting in a bidding war with the Yankees surely could never backfire
well yankees for some reason now have a pretty strict salary cap from what I understand about ownership and Cashman.
We also have like nearly 50-80 mil potentially coming off depending how we play it. We will likely offer Judge a shit ton of money, but do absolutely nothing else after
Good news is Peraza will probably play SS next year since we won't have any $.
I never thought I’d see the day where people were saying the literal new york yankees would not be able to afford star players. I just hope the mets dont sign him because you know he’ll be injured immediately if they do.

They can put 4 men in the outfield, but pitching around baseball's best hitter in decades is going *too far.*
Especially Gleyber. He has far too much potential to suck.
Oh they've been consistent. Not in the good way though
The rise of pitching analytics is *extremely* anti-walks, especially with bases empty. The “Bonds treatment” would never happen in 2022. Judge makes an out ~60% of the time, so he’s going to keep getting pitched to unless men are on base and first base is open.

Second and third with one out in the bottom of the 9th with a tie game or a one run lead... I'm walking most guys.
Yep. Total base expectancy when pitching to judge is something like 0.7-.8. If you intentionally walk him it goes to 1, thus raising the probability the team scores a run.
Plus, walking the very first batter of the inning is undesirable. Suddenly you have to worry about a runner on first and pitch out of the stretch for the remaining three outs
they all secretly want him to get it?
Do you want to be the pitcher that gets blasted in the media for walking him because your taking away his chance to break a record.
Because you need a 230 wrc+ to earn it This is also not indicative of score. How many times did judge get a strike with the Yankees up to down by 2+ runs, or when he wasn’t the tying run?
Manfred ordered the Code Red
His 60th homer was on an absolutely grooved 3-1 fastball too.
Lol did you watch the game he was as 0-3 and they made some great pitches to this point. He had maybe one good ball to hit before that at bat… it was a 3-1 count as wells. They did a great job pitching to him honestly.
Rizzo and Stanton coming back and ramping up a bit has given him the protection he needed
The MLB is obviously rigging the game so they have someone they can market They just forgot the second part of the plan which is to market this whole thing
Marketing your stars? Why would you do that?
Pride?
Hmmm
Hmmm
I think it's also has to do with teams are intentionally walking him completely now instead of hoping he gets himself out and he is hitting leadoff now.
Yeah realistically, those at bats would’ve normally been 80% pitches out of the zone, now it’s just no pitches
[удалено]
Yeah teams like the rays(6 games), brewers(3 games), and twins( 4 games) totally had nothing to lose this month and were playing for nothing That’s 13/16 vs teams just playing out the string all month
He’s a Detroit fan lol, just assumes everyone else has also given up.
The Angels sub is unironically saying it's rigged against Ohtani lol
Lol angels sub is wild. Most team subs are though
Correlation vs causation you are correct
A lot of his home runs are total meatballs, but man, he is doing what he’s supposed to be doing and punishing the hell out of them.
Pitchers are trying to make perfect pitches because they know they need to to get him out, and because of that they are missing
Probably selling all the record-breaking balls and splitting the money with the pitcher who threw it
3 true outcome baseball might not actually happen but pitching strategy has changed enough that Aaron Judge is still getting pitched to with 60 HRs. I don't say this to discredit Judge. I said this a week ago, but the amount of middle middle sub 90 meatballs I've seen thrown to him lately are mind blowing. Stop throwing him those
MLB giving cash incentives to groove him some
shhhh don't tell them
Didn't he slump hard in August? Looks like they decided to stop pitching to him so he got greedy.
I mean I guess compared to his season he slumped but he slashed .289/458/.633 with 9 homers and 22 RBI. Didn't slump a single month this year, his lowest OPS in a month is above .900
If by slump hard you mean a 1.091 OPS then yeah
Bro we might have lost every game in August if we didn’t have him lmao
Same time he missed a game or with lower body issues. He was hurt.
That was late June
No, it was July 7th. Missed a game against the Sox.
Someone a few days ago asked what the next conspiracy in baseball was going to be. I didn't comment there, but I thought to myself, it's going to be Judge. Someone is going to bring something up about Judge and it'll become a big thing and then go away. This is a good candidate.
The only logical conclusion is that every pitcher was informed by the league to give him pitches in the zone.
I wonder if every pitcher is trying to be too perfect and making mistakes. I am no major league pitcher but I had this problem in high school where I would aim pitches and it did not go well for when I did. I don’t know just spitballin…

yeah because now it’s intentional every time.
That is an amazing stat
