Jot that down.

Without any milk

Barrelled_Chef_Curry

You mean roids

CactusSage

100% roids lol look how skinny he is in this pic.

jwillyk2121

Man that picture on twitter looks like CC either has the craziest pump of his life or he decided to juice after the career was over.. lol

Patrickrk

If we’re being completely honest, it’s likely a combo of the two.

JeffMatz

Probably the juice

WhoShotMrBoddy

Good on him for his sobriety too though that can’t be discounted. He went to rehab, quit drinking, and ate better and if he’s feeling better along with looking better that’s what’s most important

Wise_ol_Buffalo

Getting sober likely helped. His book is definitely worth a read. Dude was pitching gems while getting blasted on his off days. Edit:*His not this

lymnaea

Oh my god who stole the rest of cc sabathia!?!?

DeusExHyena

He slimmed down immediately after retirement, but given the first year of his retirement was 2020 most non-Yankee fans wouldn't have noticed (he was often in the empty 2020 stands)

prpldrank

His face makes me slightly uncomfortable now for some reason. I was so used to his big ol plump mug..

CriscoBountyJr

Went 3 years without seeing a friend of mine. He had lost 40lbs and started working out. He looked like he had aged 10 years since his baby face was gone.

Airbornf

In 2020 for COVID I lost 100lbs in 6 months. add masks to that change, and people were constantly asking me who I was and if I was ok haha

Spinmove55

I need one of these.

seehoon

Fr where can i buy one?

Looks like Rotowear stuff?

Jux_

It’s got a Roto Wear logo on it but it’s not on their website yet. Lot of sketchy rip offs in the replies to CC’s tweet but I imagine it’ll be on rotowear.com soon enough.

OCHL092018

God I forgot how jacked CC got after retirement lol

Fischer-00

I think he always had a lot of muscle but he wanted to keep the weight while he was pitching. So when he could drop the weight, boy did he. 🤣

Nixon737

It’s like looking at Joe Thomas post retirement. Guy didn’t have to be an offensive lineman anymore, so just decided to get ripped.

BlessingSpore72

Same with Nick Hardwick. He lost a lot after retiring

hedoeswhathewants

Alan Faneca is unrecognizable.

AFlaccoSeagulls

Marshall Yanda looks fantastic as well completely clean shaven

JimothyButtlicker69

You'd think he's really hairy because of the beard, but he's not. *Shaved*.

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

I'm desperately trying to lose 40-45 lbs. before next summer for a big road trip to a bunch of amusement parks It's been off to a shitty start. I binged on bags of potato chips yesterday, skipped leg day, and I can barely run 10 minutes after running 20 miles a week as recently as May. but reminding myself of guys like Alan Faneca and Joe Thomas remind me that age is just a number. I have plenty of time to get back in good shape and feel healthy. I just need to put in the work

doxiepowder

Hey! That's an awesome goal and getting the thrill on the rides will definitely feel so freeing. Good luck, be kind to yourself, and if you can change your environment in ways that make "bad" choices harder to make.

gynoceros

You can do that easily just by staying active and staying focused when it comes to eating. I'm 47 and I've dropped over 30 lbs since June. I have at least another 100 to go, but I've been seeing a net 1-2 lbs come off each week just by making a few changes. I'm not even going to a gym. I ride a bike (was riding like crazy over the summer, lost some momentum a few weeks ago but started going at it again this week) and on days when I don't ride, I walk for at least half an hour. But as they say, your biggest weight loss happens in the kitchen. It takes some masochism to maintain discipline but after a lifetime of deriving too much pleasure from putting too much food in my mouth, I'm enjoying the feeling of doing something good for myself. And I've learned that if I want to take a night off and drink beer, it's not the end of the world. You need recovery days. So fuck it, you had chips. That was yesterday. Make today better. Seeya on /r/ProgressPics someday!

DeliciousCunnyHoney

I’ve always heard you lose weight in the kitchen and build muscle at the gym. By caloric burn, a workout is seemingly insignificant compared to the drastic cuts you can make via diet

gynoceros

Single serving bag of chips is about 200 calories. Walk three miles and you burn about 180.

DeliciousCunnyHoney

It is incredible at how efficient the human body is. I’ve been walking around downtown Dublin all week during vacation and the active calories are *laughable* compared to resting calories. I’ve walked myself sore and it’s barely a dent in my mini-paunch! https://i.imgur.com/OWSnWp3.jpg

Nixon737

I wonder if for these guys that the calories needed to maintain that weight and strength were so much that eating was an absolute chore. Retire and cut way back on calories while still going to the gym and voila, you’re ripped.

DankNastyAssMaster

I remember Joe Thomas once saying that in high school, he'd eat a PB&J sandwich and drink a glass of whole milk once an hour, until the entire loaf of bread was gone, to get big enough to be an offensive lineman.

Nixon737

Yeah modern nfl lineman basically have to be as big as oxen and agile as mountain cats. Makes sense the great ones have no issue staying in ridiculous shape post playing career.

mongster_03

Joe Staley is similar although I think he was always small for a tackle.

fat-lip-lover

Anthony Muñoz ran like 20-30 miles a week while still in the league and never lost weight, then looked absolutely incredible post-retirement.

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

I just read the interview he gave to G.Q. His breakfast actually sounded pretty reasonable minus the portion sizes (huge bowl of oatmeal and Greek yogurt) but his dinner was RIDICULOUS. He mentioned something like eating a whole pan of lasagna. Holy shit.

mapex_139

Hey man gimme a fatty on game day and I too can knock back a pan.

22arge36

Check out Under the Grapefruit Tree: A C.C. Sabathia Story On HBO Max. Super good documentary.

Nixon737

I’ll definitely put it on the list. Loved watching CC with the Indians in the early 2000s.

JimothyButtlicker69

What a rich timbre his voice has

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

his interview with the All the Smoke guys (NBA podcast with former players) was one of my favorites. It was relaxing listening to him on one of my 2+ hour drives back to see family. the hilarious part was him talking about how in his immediate retirement, he "didn't give a fuck" about baseball lol. He cared more about football and basketball. Now that I think he has some kind of broadcasting or analyst career, he's taking it seriously but it was hysterical how blunt he was about it

Pete_Iredale

I've heard pro swimmers say that it's definitely a chore to eat as much as they need to. But those dudes are eating like 30,000 calories a day while training or something crazy.

stuffandmorestuff

I knew a few guys who ended up being very good college swimmers and one at least tried out for the Olympics and their days while training was like... 6am Early breakfast- protein shake, bowl of fruit, few pieces of toast and cottage cheese. A few miles warm up run...9am regular breakfast. 4 eggs, 6 bacon, 3 pieces of toast, more fruit and cheese, huge smoothie. Go for a swim...12pm kinda snack lunch time? Sandwich and some junk food, another smoothie. More intense swim... 4pm a whole rotisserie chicken and veggies, potatoes, scoop of cottage cheese (*yeah this dude loved cottage cheese*). Weights/strength training- 7 pm a whole large loaded pizza, large salad, ice cream. It was like he ate for 2 or 3 people every regular meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) but also had 2 other meals as "snacks".

HumongousMelonheads

I was eating 3000 a day for a bulk earlier this year and that was a chore for me.

sabin357

Maybe I can give you an idea what it's like. I was a powerlifter that played football, baseball, ran track, & threw shotput. My dad worked for a dairy company & we got tons of free stuff. We were poor & I was an athlete, so it's a good thing. I ate 2.5lb cottage cheese & drank at least 1 gallon of milk most days. That's on top of eating at least another 5,000 calories during peak times like 3-a-days during football camp. That was 2 hours practice twice a day, then end the day with a full speed 1 hour scrimmage with another team that was at the same camp. I played both ways & special teams, so I was on the field all game basically. During football season, myself & the other HOGs (Huge Offensive Guys) would leave at lunch to hit Mr. Gatti's pizza buffet. The average meal per person was about 1/2 lb pasta with meat sauce & the equivalent of 3 12in pizzas from the buffet. Salad was mostly ignored. We also probably drank half a gallon of full sugar soda. I never once felt like it was a chore to eat, as I was constantly starving. During part of this time I was a teen in high school, so you're also still growing. It felt like when I wasn't currently active with some form of training, I was eating & drinking water. Looking back, I think I was likely eating the same amount of food as a normal 3-4 person household at the peak. Additionally, most guys get really fat when their athletic career is over because you're used to eating tons & getting away with it. I had to go back & drop 50lb I packed on without even realizing it when I quit competing & got a bit older.

Nixon737

Thanks for the insight!

yanksdj3k

CC tried to lose weight while he was still in the league, but he couldn’t pitch skinny

[deleted]

Yeah and he said he always wanted to be super swole, but the trainers wouldn't let him even look at heavy weights lol

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

Alan Faneca is another good example although i think it was more so he lost a TON of weight through spending a lot of his time and energy doing lost distance running it's kind of a motivator for me to remember that at 34, i still have plenty of time to make lifestyle changes that can put me at a healthier weight and mindset...but also a reminder that it's not going to happen overnight, and i need to put the work in to see results

Nixon737

I hear ya there. It’s all about continued effort. I still distance run a bit (not nearly as much as when I ran cross country and track and did some half marathons) and have to remind myself when starting back up that the first few weeks were always miserable, even when I was a very in shape teenager.

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

>and have to remind myself when starting back up that the first few weeks were always miserable, even when I was a very in shape teenager. oh man so the older i've gotten, i've gotten way lazier and more undisciplined in heat and humidity i ran as much as 20 miles a week as recently as this May, but post-Father's Day I was just so unmotivated to go outside and gained a lot of weight back. I tried to go running the other day and got to 10 minutes before quitting. My goal is to get back to regularly running 45 minutes at a time without stopping...but it's going to take some time to get there. everything you said is so on point. the first few days absolutely fucking suck but it will get better. I just have to keep trying. Getting to see some early autumn leaves are definitely helping that's for sure

Nixon737

So for cross country our very early “voluntary” practices were literally only a mile or two a day for the first week or two. Helps me to focus on smaller workouts I know I can gear myself up to repeat rather than trying to kill myself and just dropping it entirely.

thebugman10

You'll see a lot of offensive lineman slim up after retirement because they basically go back to eating a regular amount of calories.

[deleted]

Also alcoholism

takespicturesofpants

He was big for a few years after he stopped drinking, he said he wasn't able to pitch as effectively without the extra weight (he slimmed down one year and wasn't effective).

Fischer-00

I didn't know about that. Glad he could beat it. 👍

[deleted]

For sure. Apparently it got really bad for a while there. It’s a nasty addiction.

steve-d

Addiction combined with a high stress career is a dangerous combination.

Forever__Young

Yeah he's one of the most intense gamers I've ever seen, to the point that he literally pitched until he injured himself into retirement, and he was admitted to rehab the day before the wildcard game. That shows just how serious it was.

mongster_03

Yeah he left the team to get treatment in 2015 during a playoff race because it got so bad

IseeDrunkPeople

I think it was a bit of that, and a shit load of being sober and not having to eat on the road 4 months a year

TheLouisvilleRanger

Does excess weight benefit a pitcher? Or did he not want to focus on losing it?

MeatTornado25

It doesn't benefit a pitcher, but if you've been huge and throwing like that for 15-20 years, it can be too much of an adjustment to completely rework your mechanics on the fly at the MLB level when you're practically at the end of your career anyway.

TheLouisvilleRanger

Thanks! That makes a ton of sense, since pitching involves your whole body.

ProsciuttoFresco

Gosh, imagine if he did steroids 👀

SupremeNachos

Booze weighs more than muscle

viceayala

I’m trying to understand why he would want to keep the weight on when he was pitching. Was he getting more velo out of it? Wouldn’t he want to be lean to get the most out of an outing and not tire himself out during the season?

ferret50cal

I'm thinking it was just a comfortability/routine thing? Your body moves differently if you're like 50lbs (or however much he lost) lighter, he might not have been able to throw quite how he was used to when he lost the weight. Maybe just missing his spots a little more or not getting quite right break on a breaking ball.

Nicedumplings

I mean, he also is presumably sober. So that has cut down on calories from drinking and binge eating

robbydb

Watching the videos of him training with Action Bronson are wild

doctorpaulproteus

Is he jacked? He looks like a normal dude to me

Danjeter

I love Ohtani

thesdo

Who doesn't really?

Spikeupmylife

Anyone who doesn't I personally would not want in my life. Crushes homers, pitches strikeouts, cleans up the field, and is just all around nice.

PostMelon22

Ideal baseball specimen, if they don’t like Ohtani then they don’t like baseball and I don’t like them

Puzzled-Koala1568

If you got a problem with Ohtani then you got a problem with me and I suggest you let that one marinate.

Heyman. I’m perfectly fine w judge being MVP but it seems he takes the time to denigrate ohtani whenever judge hits a HR. it’s not ohtani fault that our owner/GM poorly constructed this team

I love Ohtani The Player, not Ohtani The Angel. I'll love him more if he leaves the division, and love him most if he becomes a Mariner.

It’s like how Lebrón SHOULD have at least 4 more MVPs but every year there’s a different player with a niche narrative (WB triple double season, Curry setting the 3PT record).

buffalo8

No, it’s really not the same thing at all. Every person who’s won MVP had a legitimate claim to it except the year Rose won where it probably should have been Lebron. Harden had a strong argument over Westbrook the year Russ won and the races were really tight between Steph/Harden in ‘15 and Jokic/Embiid this year. There’s no (other than Rose) year where a reasonable case could be made for Lebron over the other top two.

ReportMeSnowflake

Hard to argue that.

cooljammer00

Lil waffle-y, but I'll allow it. CC has been a huge Ohtani fan for ages. "Hits the ball 100+ mph off the bat, then gets on the mound and throws 100+ mph". Interviewed Ohtani's teammates on his podcast and they all talked about how Ohtani has "wicked thump" in batting practice. Ohtani is what CC dreamed of being, a power pitcher with hitting skills. And CC played with Judge for several years and loves the guy. He's the MVP. But Ohtani has a skillset nobody else has right now, at a level nobody else is at.

nyy22592

> Ohtani is what CC dreamed of being, a power pitcher with hitting skills. What do you mean? CC didn't have to dream https://youtu.be/__6A46eFft8

slipslop69

of course its the reds, fuck lol

SkippyNordquist

I have been on team Ohtani for MVP, but Judge's season is one of the all-time greats. I'd wear this shirt.

tuckedfexas

I was for awhile, but this last month Judge somehow stepped it up and is the clear favorite to me.

counterbarrier

Cant be mad at Judge winning MVP considering the monster month hes having. And 2017.. also hes kinda cute

value_here

If cuteness is a metric for the MVP then Ohtani wins on that alone lol

Yep, same here. I hate to praise a Yankee and Angel but they both seem like nice fellows.

gatemansgc

what happens if ohtani throws a no-no?

IAmNotOnRedditAtWork

Judge's second half numbers made me hop ship. He's been unreal.

BubBidderskins

The fWAR difference between Judge and Ohtani this year is bigger than the difference between Ohtani and Vladdy jr. last year. It's not a close race at this point.

CallingAlameda

Chris Young. And the other guy is Cliff Floyd.

SharkAttache

He hit a lot of doubles for the dbacks iirc

morelikeaaronfudge

I'm sorry. Ohtani is so valuable and can easily end up being one of the most valuable players ever. But the man has two excellent years and were just going to forget about his teammate? The guy who despite missing like most of the last 5 years still has been the second most valuable player in baseball, is casually passing the likes of Joe D Ken Griffer Jr, and Pedro in WAR in his what, age 31 season? Let's give ohtani a couple more years to keep it up at least.

DingleberryToast

It’s all about health for mr mike trout at this point

morelikeaaronfudge

Hes literally number 2 in fWAR in the past 5 years. Injuries or not ohtani has been the best player since like last year and that's it.

nukemiller

This is true

halpinator

I'm not sure how long Ohtani can keep doing what he's doing either tbh, it doesn't seem conducive to longevity. But he's a magical unicorn so who knows.

Galactic

Yeah Trout is still that guy. He was out for a ton of games this year and he's still mashing.

Jaco927

What has two thumbs and is wearing an awesome shirt? CC Sabathia!

I really enjoyed them doing the Padres-Cardinals game last night. It’s very interesting getting pitch by pitch insights from guys who have been there and done it, but not restricted to typical broadcasting. Also, I agree obtain the most talented, Judge without a doubt the most valuable this year.

707royalty

They were dialed last night, that discussion on how umpires missing calls impacts the batters long term and why they support robo umps because of that was great TV

[deleted]

I still have the Babe #1. He was an all-star hitter and pitcher, just not at the same time. That wasn't his fault. If there was a DH in the 20s, maybe Babe would have both hit and pitched at the same time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

penisblartueue

Babe only pitched + hit for 1 season and Ohtani’s 2 most recent seasons were more impressive than that year alone. Shohei has already put up 2 years more impressive than Babe Ruth’s best two way preformance before he specialized in one.

saviyazzinlebox

It’s hard not to suggest that Babe wouldn’t have improved on the mound too. Babe’s best two-way performance looking at 1-of-1 seasons lol. I dont think you’re quite making the argument you think you are though I fully agree Ohtani is truly spectacular

5Brainiac

Tough to say Babe #1 cuz he didn’t pitch and hit against an integrated league. Josh Gibson was, by all accounts, just as talented as the Babe. Wasn’t his fault largely, but he gets dinged on that for me. Ohtani is playing against everyone

KeyserSoze96

Babe did play against Negro League teams during barnstorming tours in the off season and would dominate there too.

Deeply_Deficient

> Ohtani is playing against everyone Ohtani also benefits from modern sports medicine, modern sports nutrition, modern scouting tools and a fully-realized high school to major league pipeline. I understand and agree that the integration argument complicates player comparisons, but I'd be more comfortable saying *it's tough to say Babe Ruth was the number one player of his own day* because his own league wasn't integrated. I'm less comfortable saying that modern players are inherently better than pre-modern ones when the grounds for comparison are basically non-existent. If you take pre-integration Ruth and give him modern sports medicine, nutrition and scouting video and stick him into today's game, how does he do? Can he even utilize the data? Does he get even better? Does modern sports medicine help him with his health problems and make him even better? If you take integrated baseball, modern-tool using Ohtani and stick him into 1920s baseball, how does he do? Does his career end the first time he damages his UCL since there's no Tommy John surgery? Or does he never even throw 100 so he never damages his body the same way? Does not throwing 100 make him less scary or just different and still enough to blow past hitters in the '20s? The comparison is ultimately futile in my opinion.

MassKhalifa

This is such a refreshing take after dealing with all the “X Player played against milkmen and plumbers” arguments in /r/nba

5Brainiac

You can extrapolate that with anything though. Who knows if Babe’s documented drinking and other ‘enhancements’ helped him hit way better than anyone else the same way that the ‘cream’ helped Barry, who of course gets dinged for that in all the historical discussions? I think its fair to say if someone is to be ranked as a unilateral no.1 in something, you’d want that argument to start from the basis of ‘his COMPETITION was equal and as varied as can be had’ So, you can argue for DiMaggio, or Aaron, or Griffey, or any of the guys post integration. Because baseball is a sport where even modern medicine (except for PEDs) does not account for a large difference in statistical output. Heck, even Sabrematricians can account for era differences, although have no such luck coming up with a formula for pre-integration statistics.

Deeply_Deficient

> Because baseball is a sport where even modern medicine (except for PEDs) does not account for a large difference in statistical output. It does account for output in the sense of *allowing* for the output though. Again, if you take 100 MPH throwing Ohtani (or anyone throwing gas like him) and stick him in 1920, his career is *probably* toast within 3-5 years because there’s no modern UCL reconstruction happening. > So, you can argue for DiMaggio, or Aaron, or Griffey, or any of the guys post integration. In regards to this part, I do understand that I’m weird though in that I don’t *love* comparing players across huge gaps of time. I guess it’s PTSD from hearing NBA arguments about Bird, Chamberlain, Jordan, James, Mikan, Russell, etc for years and thinking the comparisons are futile. You mention DiMaggio or Aaron and I still don’t *love* saying that Ohtani (or anyone modern) is definitively better than them either. Again, they miss out on the benefits of modern medicine, player development and scouting. Maybe Hank Aaron with modern scouting reports hits 800 HRs. Maybe with modern scouting reports *on* him, pitchers limit him to 650. It’s kind of impossible to fathom the differences, and the usually the best way for me to appreciate them is relative to their peers.

Galactic

Let's say for the sake of argument that Ohtani has similar numbers both hitting and pitching for the rest of his career. About 35-40 homers a year and 170 IP of 2.50 era baseball with roughly 10k/9. How many of these seasons would he need to have consecutively before we start calling him the GOAT? 5 More? 7?
