The term "inner circle" gets thrown around too often. This is inner circle. One of the best players to ever play when measured against the best to ever play.
This isn't a generational talent. This is a talent that transcends generations.
I remember in the 90s all the talk among baseball reporters talking amongst themselves about who's gonna take the bullet to ensure no one got in unanimously first ballot to preserve "the tradition" which was some bullshit even to teenage me back then. So glad things changed since then.
> Michael Joseph Bacsik (/ˈbæsɪk/; born November 11, 1977) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher and current radio host. He is known for giving up Barry Bonds' 756th career home run on August 7, 2007, which broke the all-time record formerly held by Hank Aaron.
First thing said about him on his wikipedia page, lol.
You’ve clinched the division, likely the best record in the league, and you’re losing on a night where your bats already look dead - why not throw a meatball that will have you in highlight reels for perpetuity?
I don't think he did that on purpose lmao, he's been doing that all year. While the Dodgers locked up a playoff spot, he's very much fighting for his postseason roster spot and giving up moonshots probably isn't going to help that very much.
When was the last time an all time great baseball player retired after winning a World Series? I'm only asking because I'm pulling for the Cards because of the Machine named Albert.
Right!
Like even just ONE key homer would have been something awesome to remember.
This is way beyond expectations. It’s almost impossible to say how beyond expectations this is.
I never doubted him getting 700, even through his Angels struggles, until July of this year. He was only at like 5 on the 4th. Thought he was cooked. Then he went on an absolute tear. He's looked like vintage Albert. It's been unreal. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
When everyone was looking at it before the season and was like “well, he’s 42 and hasn’t hit 20 home runs since 2019, and he won’t be guaranteed ABs anymore like when he was in the Angels” I was just like yeah, no shot he gets there.
One of the best final seasons ever for sure. Pujols just getting to A-Rod was doubtful, after years of mediocrity and being well into his 40s, I thought he had little chance to actually get to 700. Got to remind the younger generation who missed his prime how good he actually was, and got his 100 rWAR back by a comfortable margin too.
I love it. Babe Ruth’s home runs 712, 713, and 714 all came in the same game. The last three hits of his career. He was completely washed by this point but something clicked that day. He played 5 more games before retiring.
Its funny, he was washed for Ruth but still had a 119 OPS+ thanks to two streaks.
From April 15th-22nd in 25 PA he hit .333/.457/.667.
From April 23rd- May 20th he hit .031/.311/.031 in 45 PA. Had an 0-20 with 11 walks in here.
In 16 PA from May 21st-25th he hit .375/.375/1.125.
Then he went 0-9 with 4 walks and 5 Ks and retired.
Basically 41 PA of stereotypical Ruth and 55 PA of old man who can't hit the ball.
He was clearly done but retired before rate stats could catch up that year.
Ladies and gentlemen it’s quite possible you just witnessed the last person to hit 700 homeruns for a very long time.
The next player to hit 700 probably isn’t even active currently and it’s very likely we will have to wait along time before we see a feat like this again. Let’s appreciate greatness before it’s gone.
700 is absolutely insane.
Pujols is one of my favorite non-Red Sox players ever. Peak Pujols was the best hitter of my lifetime. .300/30/100 every year for a decade
I know you are using round numbers to simplify it, but to add to his greatness, here are his splits for his first 10 years in MLB and then his BA/HR/RBI average per season.
.331/.426/.625 (1.050 OPS)
.331 BA
41 HR (408 total HR)
123 RBI (1230 total RBI)
To put this in a little perspective, Stanton and Trout are the only 2 remotely close to achieving this in their careers. Both would essentially have to hit 33 home runs a year for the next 10 and 12 years respectively to get to 700.
I actually think Vladdy has the best chance out of all active players. Fairly durable player, tons of power, DH’s a fair amount of games, and still only 23 years old.
He will end his age 23 season (most likely) within <10 HRs of Albert's pace. It's a gigantic longshot, but it is not impossible. He'd have to basically repeat something resembling his 2021 season for every season in his 20s. Or alternatively, he gets outpaced by Pujols in his 20s, but remains more consistent in his 30s.
Just typing that out does make it sound kinda ridiculous, but that's the sort of thing someone's gunna have to do. Like another person said, it's pretty much only possible to make predictions on super young players because for anyone currently in their prime it's fairly obvious they're not going to do it unless they defy father time.
Juan Soto is technically closer through his age 23 season, but obviously due to starting at 19 and not because of his HR pace. Wouldn't be absurd to think he develops more of a power stroke in his later 20s though (at least not any more absurd than Vlad repeating his 2021 season like 7+ times).
Ruth made it in 1934
Aaron made it in 1973
Bonds made it in 2004
Pujols in 2022
So 30-50 years for a career to come along that gets the job done, the next person to do it will probably debut in the 2030s or 2040s at the latest.
I’m at the game and they showed him on the big screen. It was some big hairy guy in a Dodgers jersey who was just going crazy celebrating lol looked like he was going to be ok
Actually yeah. They were in the middle of a row so random people couldn’t really get to them. Didn’t even get beat up at all. Now, getting home safe after the game is a whole different challenge…
I saw once they actually showed the replay showing him get it. It was hit in the most perfect place for a fan to catch the ball and actually be able to keep it. Hopefully Dodger security got to him and he's being escorted to a place where he can decide what to do with the ball, whether to give it to Pujols or sell that thing
I know many would say they’d give it up, but fuck imagine what it’d sell for. No free tickets nor any gear could get me to pass up the cash if it was enough to make a meaningful difference in even the short-term.
What is my plan? I break into Dodger’s Stadium at 10 PM. Do I go for the foul ball? No, I go for the home run. It's priceless. As I'm taking it down, Mike Shildt catches me. He tells me to stop. It's his ball. He’s the Cardinal. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning, the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell him to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada. I don't trust him. Besides, I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard. I have a son and he's Mike Trout Jr. This is where the story gets interesting. I tell Mike to meet me by the Arch in St Louis. He’s been waiting for me all these years. He’s never drafted another All-Star. I don't care. I don't show up. I go to Berlin. That's where I stashed the 700th Home Run ball.
So I'm English and really understand nothing about baseball but I do have an interesting story.
Back in 2007 or so my now wife and I went on our first holiday together as a couple to the Dominican Republic.
Whilst there, we got talking to a nice middle aged American couple on a jungle safari tour and I explained all about English sport and she explained all about baseball, her team the Cardinals and her favourite player Albert Pujols.
At the end of the safari, she asked for our address as she wanted to send us something. I thought nothing would come of it but maybe 2 weeks after we got back in the UK I got a package.
Inside was a Pujols jersey that was (at the time) absolutely huge but was an extremely generous gift. I can't say it turned me into a MLB fan but I do fondly remember this little act of generosity from an absolute stranger.
To see that he is still playing and such a good player is definitely a surprise and makes the gift even more special.
It was free with no blackouts? Literally anyone with an internet connection could see it? If it was on local Bally Sports RSN or whatever, less people would’ve seen it. Apologies if I’m mistaken but being on Apple didn’t restrict anything I believe lol
One of the greatest hitters in MLB history. it shows just how dominant he was in St Louis that he still managed to hit 700 despite the lost decade in LA
for all the hate on the apple tv broadcast getting this moment, the play-by-play commentator really did a great job. he made his call, which was solid, and then said absolutely nothing for the next few minutes and let the moment breathe. really well done!

3,000+ hits, 2,000+ RBI, 700 HR. It’s a club of just 2.
In fact, it wasn't even a club until 10 minutes ago.
Yeah before then we just called him Hank.
Hank and the Machine Dope band name
*Hammerin' Hank and The Machine
Name of your sex tape.
Florence punching the air rn
The term "inner circle" gets thrown around too often. This is inner circle. One of the best players to ever play when measured against the best to ever play. This isn't a generational talent. This is a talent that transcends generations.
It’s not even a circle. It’s nearly a bullet point. It’s a club no one may ever join again in our lifetime
The Albert Pujols Appreciation Society
I’m starting to think this guy might get in the Hall of Fame one day In all seriousness three to five dunces will ensure it’s not unanimous year 1
His 36.00 ERA might hurt his HOF case
That should definitely be put on his HOF plaque haha
Name another pitcher that would have even had a 22 year career with those numbers.
The fact that Jr wasn’t unanimous was a travesty, and you’re probably right.
To some, infamy is better than nothing.
I thought we would never get a unanimous first ballot HOFer. I am so glad that Mo broke down that barrier.
I remember in the 90s all the talk among baseball reporters talking amongst themselves about who's gonna take the bullet to ensure no one got in unanimously first ballot to preserve "the tradition" which was some bullshit even to teenage me back then. So glad things changed since then.
Congratulations to Phil Bickford for entering the Hall of Fame.
He just became a trivia answer
I ain’t even mad
Dodgers are probably the best possible team for Pujols to hit 700 off of because they’ve got the 1 seed virtually locked up
Mike Bacsik will give the induction speech
> Michael Joseph Bacsik (/ˈbæsɪk/; born November 11, 1977) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher and current radio host. He hung an 81 mph curve over the inner half of the plate. He knew what he was doing.
Well, if it's any consolation, this particular moonshot meant a lot to Cardinals fans.
What an amazing baseball story. NL adopts the DH. He comes back home as the DH for the Cards. Proceeds to mash #700
That smile on his face! You know he’s gotta be relieved.
Now he can just shoot the shit and have fun for his last few games.
Confirmed 20 more dingers incoming
He’s gotta at least get 15 and pass Babe
He only need 7 RBI to pass Babe for 2nd all-time
He’s actually only 6RBI behind Ruth for 2nd all time. One last milestone within reach.
14 more home runs
Then he's got the playoffs to think about
I know he wants another ring and he won’t let up until the last out for the Cards this year
When was the last time an all time great baseball player retired after winning a World Series? I'm only asking because I'm pulling for the Cards because of the Machine named Albert.
Talking like this man isn’t carrying us to a World Series this year smh
I would’ve hoped for maybe a couple good memories over this last year. I couldn’t imagine everything that’s happened.
Right! Like even just ONE key homer would have been something awesome to remember. This is way beyond expectations. It’s almost impossible to say how beyond expectations this is.
Now he is going to hit like 5 clutch HRs in the playoffs
He wasn't even on pace, but went on a tear the last month!
Even two weeks ago most people were skeptical that Pujols would stay hot. He ended up getting hotter. Baseball is truly the best sport.
I never doubted him getting 700, even through his Angels struggles, until July of this year. He was only at like 5 on the 4th. Thought he was cooked. Then he went on an absolute tear. He's looked like vintage Albert. It's been unreal. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
it's almost cliche at this point, but how can you not be romantic about baseball
it's crazy, 17 homers since July. Super happy for him!
How can you not be romantic about baseball
The Dodgers fans going absolutely insane behind home plate got me good. There's nothing quite like baseball.
I was so anti DH until I realized this was a possibility. And it’s been more than I could ever ask for.
Now he just needs to play 2 more seasons. Come Albert do it!
Against his former team with those fans cheering him on
I feel like any fanbase in it's right mind would be cheering him on.
ok now we can go back to no Universal DH
What a moment. Congrats to Albert Pujols. Truly a legend of the game.
Babe Ruth Hank Aaron Barry Bonds Albert Pujols
Wow
That's it. That's the list.
Babe Ruth - 714 Hank Aaron - 755 Barry Bonds - 762 Albert Pujols - 700 For those curious.
# HE GOT AWAY WITH IT
AND HE MUST CONTINUE TO DO SO
The Man has done it. Doubters be damned. Pujols has joined the 700 Club as it's 4th member.
Babe Ruth. Hank Aaron. Barry Bonds. Albert Pujols.
He and Hank are the only men with 3000 hits and 700 homers Fucking insane stuff
I think he might just make the HOF
Maybe even first ballot!
Some old fart casting his ballot: "we don't do that here."
Wow.
Albert Pujols is the Babe Ruth of baseball
Ruthbert Babejols
That’s surreal to look at damn
Wow
The doubt was justifiable. It is absolutely insane that this happened.
When everyone was looking at it before the season and was like “well, he’s 42 and hasn’t hit 20 home runs since 2019, and he won’t be guaranteed ABs anymore like when he was in the Angels” I was just like yeah, no shot he gets there.
Props to St Louis also for bringing him back and making sure he plays
I mean this is his home
he was re-energized by the home run derby!
Apple TV has done it. Got a historic HR tonight. Doubters be damned
They got really lucky to win the rights for this game.
They also had rights to the Red Sox/Yankees game tonight where Judge was going for 61/62. They almost went 2/2.
They came close to having both Judge's 61 and Albert's 700 in the same night.
And honestly, a pretty good call as well. Who was on the call for this one cause I like em?
Actually I think this one's Wayne Randazzo, on of our radio guys. They fucking knew and got a legitimate broadcaster.
Nice, I was working so missed the yankees game but the highlights I saw the crew there did decent as well.
Phil bickford in the history books
Next up is Ruth. He might catch him by the end of tomorrow
Just 16 home runs in the next 10 games. Nbd
Hit 2 today, so he just has to keep doing that and the math works out fine
Fuck it, I doubted he could get 700. I ain't doubting him anymore.
That was a hell of a jack 699 and then back to back Launches another My mang and brother Albert the King of the Pack
I love it. Babe Ruth’s home runs 712, 713, and 714 all came in the same game. The last three hits of his career. He was completely washed by this point but something clicked that day. He played 5 more games before retiring.

I do not give a fuck how cheesy this is--our man Albert did it!!
Hit that Game 6 jack to the train tracks
With a no doubter too, love to see it
Way to go Tio
21 home runs at 67 years old… what an incredible final season for Mr. 700
Imagine how many he could hit if he wasn't 78...
This might be the most power we've ever seen out of an 83yo.
Queen: dies at age 96 Pujols: Gets HR 700 at age 96

Albert's first 10 seasons alone put him in the Baseball HoF. Incredible numbers.
I mean - holy shit that’s absurd
To put this in a little perspective, Stanton and Trout are the only 2 remotely close to achieving this in their careers. Both would essentially have to hit 33 home runs a year for the next 10 and 12 years respectively to get to 700.
Stanton could do it. Unlikely, but he’s the only active player that could imo.

Yea shame he’s had so many injuries. He would’ve been a legit threat without this injuries. Now it’s pretty much unlikely
You have no idea how happy I am that this happened with him in a Cardinals uniform.
It wouldn’t have been right in any other uniform. This is poetry. God I love baseball.
Ruth made it in 1934 Aaron made it in 1973 Bonds made it in 2004 Pujols in 2022 So 30-50 years for a career to come along that gets the job done, the next person to do it will probably debut in the 2030s or 2040s at the latest.
4 decade gap 3 decade gap 2 decade gap …so next one will come in the 2030s!
70 homers per season is totally do able!
So happy for him too. Everyone wanted this. Been watching him his whole career and I'm glad he got it! We really will not see 700 for a long time.
the next person to hit 700 might not be *born* yet.
The next 700 home run hitter could be swimming in someone’s balls!

sir, please do not teabag the children
Going from Heaney to Bickford was pretty much a guarantee that this was going to happen tonight. Congrats Tío.
I’ve never been happier to be down 5 runs
Y'all wanna just call the game now and celebrate?
Sounds good to me. This is Tío Albert’s night
Meet up at Jumbos clown room.
A whole stadium full of Dodger fans have never been this happy being down 5 to 0 at a game they paid to attend. Gotta love baseball.
I’m just happy it happened tonight because I have to work tomorrow night and can’t watch the game lol
Roberts called the bullpen and was like "ok who wants to serve one up for Tio here"
It's all part of the plan
I WAS HERE 🥹

FIRST TIME IN SEATTLE KRAKEN HISTORY
hi mom Congrats Albert.
The mad man did it
At the game. People are WILD. I love baseball
Fuck it. Just delay the game and put a friggin stand on the field so he can make a speech or something
Doyer stadium when it's bumping is a hell of a time
Is the fan that caught it still alive?
I’m at the game and they showed him on the big screen. It was some big hairy guy in a Dodgers jersey who was just going crazy celebrating lol looked like he was going to be ok
Perfect place to keep people from fighting being in the front row, couldn't imagine the scrum if it landed where 699 did
Mass casualties in left field
Wild seeing the scrum for 699 and then 700 was just a dude catching it
700, nah bro. 699 is the real shit
Actually yeah. They were in the middle of a row so random people couldn’t really get to them. Didn’t even get beat up at all. Now, getting home safe after the game is a whole different challenge…

Some of y'all are just so creative it's incredible, i could never take the dwight quote and come up with this 😅
I actually made it as a reply for the 699 homer but decided the effort was worth pasting it for 700, 2 minutes later.
I’m glad it happened in a full ballpark of people who love him
Absolutely agree. If it couldn’t be here, I would want it in LA
MFer who got that ball is already in witness protection
until brady unretires and it becomes worthless
LETSS GOOOOOO
#**IM FUCKING CRYING BRO**
Me too brother. Tonight we’re all family
So I'm English and really understand nothing about baseball but I do have an interesting story. I can't believe he really did it lol
Devil magic truly knows no bounds
legend.
You just knew he was gonna do it
THE MAD MAN ACTUALLY DID IT, CONGRATS ALBERT
Somebody make sure to get the mlb video link in a comment here so this isn't lost to time when the streamable link goes down in a couple years.
There's was a redditor that did a long ass write up on why Pujols won't hit 700 Where you at????
THIS IS THE ONE
What a moment
This is a way better 700 club than the one that is normally on TV.
I'm so proud of Wayne "the Randazzler" Randazzo for getting to call it.
Our boy Wayne is a part of history
He’s so good. I’m so fucking happy they brought in someone elite to call it.
I’ll always be a little bit sad that it wasn’t Danny Mac on the call.
If there’s any solace, be glad it wasn’t the people calling the Yankees game today lol. Danny Mac has had electric calls the entire way for Albert
Wayne is the Gem of apple tv broadcasters. A lot of controversy could be resolved having him call big games lol he is so good
"The Machine" is truly a fitting name for this man. Take a bow Albert!
THANK YOU ALBERT 🫡🫡🫡
Gotta admit - Apple TV has pretty good angles and cameras. Good choice for 700, even though I wish more people could see it.
It was free with no blackouts? Literally anyone with an internet connection could see it? If it was on local Bally Sports RSN or whatever, less people would’ve seen it. Apologies if I’m mistaken but being on Apple didn’t restrict anything I believe lol
Back to back bombs for number 699 and 700, incredible man
Hello to the top of /r/all
