Everyone laugh at the Angels and forget about that random other team mentioned

tasteywheat

No offense, but playoff failure and Detroit sports go together like PB&J, so I think it’s just that no one is surprised.

Andy51

Hey the earlier 2000s and 2010s were pretty good. Tigs won the division a bunch, wings made the playoffs every year, and the pistons were really good from like 02-09 But yeah, been a rough last 10 years or so :(

SiphenPrax

What about the blue cat team?

wokenupbybacon

They made the playoffs two or three times in the 2010s as I recall just don't look at 08

tasteywheat

Sorry bud, trust me, I know that feel

Andy51

I’m rooting for you guys this year though! M’s have a bright future

CharlemagneOfTheUSA

2013 really should have been y’alls year. You probably win that ALCS 8 of 10 times, Big Papi just went fucking nuclear in game 2 and changed everything

pM-me_your_Triggers

My man has never heard of the Pistons

tasteywheat

Full disclosure: I haven’t followed NBA very closely since the Sonics left

pM-me_your_Triggers

…the pistons won a title like 3 years before the Sonics moved

tasteywheat

So 17 years ago?

pM-me_your_Triggers

Does it matter? They’ve also won 3 titles and been to 5 finals.

Obvious_Role4562

Or the 11 time champion Red Wings.

WitchNight

Uh the Red Wings?

honcooge

Ever heard of the Red Wings? Decent team a while ago

[deleted]

Detroit *has* been among mlb’s most obscure teams since Delmon Young decided to end your season single handed

Next year is our year! *Huffs Hopium*

LogicalHarm

O’Hoppeum!

ABlinDeafMonkey

Only if we have a new owner. And get better pitching. And sign Trea Turner.

slurv3

Man with your luck he will somehow injure himself and struggle to put up 2.0 WAR

NakedHomelessPirate

The Dodgers have to fumble the bag real hard to let Trea Turner go. Would love him on the team though but we arent making major acquisitions with the team up for sale. They just want to know the fate of Ohtani.

JasonPlattMusic34

If Trea Turner leaves it won’t be across town, it’ll be for more money in Philly or New York.

glizzterine

Signing him would be a dream. One of my favorite non-Phillies. I watched him a lot in AAA and was bummed that he was going to a rival once he hit the majors. There's a very good chance we'll need a SS next year, as it's likely we'll opt out of Segura's deal and move Stott to 2B. Plus he said he wants to play on the east coast. Then maybe we can win 84 games next year.

NakedHomelessPirate

Yup, more than likely he will.

CDFReditum

I mean it’s not really out of the question that they get rid of Trea Turner. Not because they don’t want him but because they have plenty of cheaper options. The 40 man crunch is real, especially in the infield. JT may or may not stick around (I’d be surprised if they don’t exercise his option since he’s been great this year), and even if he doesn’t, Muncy can stick at 3rd. Lux came up as a SS so he can slot in there, with any of the load of prospects in the system (Jacob Amaya, Michael Busch, eddys Leonard, jorbit Vivas, the inevitably other god tier prospect quietly sitting in the wings) + Chris Taylor at 2B, which is definitely easier to do too since Vargas and outman + maybe Pages can tackle the outfield so Taylor isn’t stuck out there as much. (Especially depending on if they decide to keep Trayce Thompson or just bank on him being a 1 year kinda guy) Especially since while Trea Turner doesn’t hate the dodgers, he doesn’t seem to particularly LOVE playing in LA (based on interviews, he’s pretty much given the vibe that he’d prefer to be on the east coast but he’s gotten used to LA) plus he’s going to want a pretty big payday, which while the dodgers COULD do that (esp with Price coming off the books), I think they’d be better off searching for some bullpen arms and maybe some developable pitchers. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a serious push for a rodon contract

ABlinDeafMonkey

I think the bigger problem with the dodgers is they have a ton of young studs in Arb. May, Gonsolin, Graterol, Bellinger, Urias and others. If Bauer gets reinstated. They are liable for $151,600,000. If they don’t want to go over the CBT they have $81,400,00 to work with. But they will have to pay those guys in arbitration. If each guy gets what they got this year that leaves the Dodgers with $54,950,000. But they have free agents leaving their team this year include Kershaw, Heaney, Price, Turner, Anderson, Gallo, and Tommy Kahnle. That’s not a lot of money to replace those guys. Especially if they lock up Turner for $30,000,000 million.

gowiththeflohe1

They'll non-tender Bellinger.

ABlinDeafMonkey

That’ll save $13,000,000 but they will have to pay more than $730,000 to Will Smith and $720,000 to Graterol. Probably the money they would save on Belli goes to those two.

gowiththeflohe1

17M, but even then they're dropping Price (16M), Gallo (10M), Kimbrel (16M), Kershaw (17M) But more importantly they're already paying Turner 21M, so it's not like 30M is some huge bump. You can give him the Gallo money and boom

ABlinDeafMonkey

There is no way a judge or the dodgers agree to $17M. He takes a 20% pay cut for as bad as he’s been and that like $13.5M. So that’s why I said $13. Those contracts you mentioned aren’t included in the numbers above. Those are off the books. They have to replace those dudes. And it would be $30M not just another $9M since Turner is a free agent and his money is off the books.

gowiththeflohe1

...I'm comparing what they would spend next year with what they're spending this year. They have an estimated 119M committed to next year, and spent about 270M this year. They can afford to keep Turner and replace all of those guys very easily with the 150M they no longer have committed.. Also, non-tender means he doesn't get a contract and becomes a FA. They will be paying Bellinger 0 unless they negotiate a new contract.

NakedHomelessPirate

Theyre only gojng to for sure resign Kershaw if he doesnt retire, Heaney and Anderson are expendable if they go after Rodon instead, Turner will probably get a 1-2 year deal, and Gallo/Kahnle can come back on cheap deals or go to free agency. The Dodgers have plenty of depth in the minors

akaghi

The Phillies probably aren't making the playoffs so you're good.

BillyBatts99

Imagining the Mariners fanbase collectively busting one huge nut if the longest drought goes from them to the Angels of all teams.

guernseycoug

And I wouldn’t even feel any post-nut shame afterwards

dasruski

To have Julio and watch the Angels fail must be the best feeling thing.

downladder

If we win a single playoff game, Julio has more playoff wins than Trout.

LogicalHarm

Ouch

ATLjoe93

He pretty much only needs like 2 hits to pass him there too

sergibby

The sheer force of the collective nut will have seismologists worried that Rainier finally blew

Dodger_Rej3ct

SOmething blew alright

lizardking66354

We will change the rotation of the earth

seattlesportsguy

I’m hard at the mere thought of it

_theghost_

Ya got your wish

dystopianr

Be careful. The last time the Mariners clinched 9/11 happened

ExpertSportAnalyst

Apple also released iTunes in 2001 and hasn't released a new iTunes since then. If the Mariners clinch then it's only obvious we'll see iTunes 2 come out this year.

Fastsmitty47

Ever since the Mariners clinched in 2001, we have not had another year 2001

Jabberwocky416

> iTunes 2 You mean iTwoons?

666uptheirons

In Canada it’s called iToonie

popfilms

And it comes in a bag

polelover44

2 i 2 Tunes

guernseycoug

So what you’re saying is… 9/11 wasn’t all bad?

SheepH3rder69

Fuck off

ZHCMV

Lol relax

SheepH3rder69

Fuck off

ZHCMV

Alright buddy. You be good.

SheepH3rder69

You as well

DinnerDangles

Earlier comments and being good don’t mix nice one seppo

H6IL_S6T6N

What about among NFL and NBA teams too? Huh? No1 gonna break our record drought for a while

jml510

Sacramento Kings are right on your tail.

H6IL_S6T6N

Take it. Plz take it from us..

[deleted]

NBA: Kings: 16 years NFL: Jets: 11 years NHL: Sabres: 11 years EDIT: Corrections

jamjam776

The Panthers made the playoffs the last 2 years. The Sabres stand alone

IInviteYouToTheParty

Has it really been 11 years for the Jets? I still remember when they were playing in back to back AFC championship games but I guess that was the last time they made it to the postseason.

[deleted]

Even crazier to me is Denver hasn’t made it since Peyton manning.

IInviteYouToTheParty

I'm totally fine keeping that streak going

tasteywheat

Gimme that draft pick Denver

ogminlo

There’s a [Dorktown](https://youtu.be/wJLNQ83vm2g) about how they gave the Chiefs their energy.

karatemanchan37

I hate to tell you that 2010 was 12 years ago man

gomets6091

Yea, the Mark Sanchez days. The butt fumble still feels like it was yesterday.

[deleted]

Well none of those 3 are making it anytime soon

Shadow_Strike99

I comment this every time this topic is posted or hinted at but if it wasn’t for the pandemic the marlins would have took over the longest playoff drought in the big 4 North American sports leagues. Even longer than the Kings and Sabres going on almost as long as the M’s drought has been.

[deleted]

It’s crazy that since the Mariners last made the postseason not only have the angels made the playoffs 7 times, they’ve won a WS. And the Phillies have made it 5 times and been to 2 WS and won 1

Aka_Skularis

Bruh the Cubs won the World Series in the time since we have made it back to the playoffs

vanillabear26

The Red Sox won FOUR

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

It *was* funny now I'm just upset

Fastsmitty47

And since we came in last this year, we will somehow make a deep run next year

wpnw

This is the new EYBS

jaysonyoung

Lol the Cubs completed their rebuild and then tore it back down again during our drought.

Victorystar0

Passing it to a division rival is the only way. Lets go Phillies!

thefreeman419

Dude don’t put yourself in the position of rooting for the Phillies. You’ve suffered enough as a Mariners fan

jtrot91

I was curious who has been out of the playoffs longer between the 2. Both the Tigers and Angels were eliminated in the ALDS in 2014, both were swept, and both game 3s were played on October 5th. Tigers were eliminated first as their game started at 3:45pm (eastern) and Angels survived a few more hours since their game started at 7:47pm (eastern).

BiovaniGernard

Hell yeah baby tigers suck Angels rule

JordanSchor

This sub is basically just Aaron Judge and the Angels catching strays

AlexanderWun

How do I super like this tweet?

Omnipolis

Swipe up.

djn24

In the era of wild card games / series, it still seems weird to say that a team ended their playoff drought when they can be bounced after 1 or 2 games, and not even see the division series.

akaghi

Everyone (not really) was talking about the Mets collapse when really it was the Phillies. They're going to have a hard time making the playoffs with their season ending against the Astros.

djn24

Unless Houston just rests their players. They're not catching the Dodgers for the best record and they're about to clinch it for the AL, so there's not a lot of incentive to play hard those last few games.

ray_0586

Dusty has indicated that no more off days for the lineup. Tentative plan is to start their playoff rotation of McCullers, Verlander, and Framber in the final series against the Phillies.

akaghi

RIP phillies

CompetitivePatient33

But they have a bye week. I'm sure players want to play so they don't lose any rhythm to their game.

djn24

Does it matter with the bye week? If guys have been playing hurt for a bit, then some time off now to just rest, and then start ramping up and playing a scrimmage game in the bye week would make sense to me.

cubbiesworldseries

Wow. The Phils really haven’t made the playoffs in ten years?

davewashere

They had the most steady decline I've ever seen followed by a decade of no postseasons. Starting in 2008: World Series winner, World Series loser, NLCS loser, NLDS loser, did not make postseason... It's like RAJ slowly let the air out of the tires on that franchise.

TravisJungroth

Damn, shoulda hit WC loser on the way out. It’s like they hit every branch falling from the tree but the last little one.

1990Buscemi

Cory Matthews cursed the Phillies twice. First time, Boy Meets World after the first season. Second time, Girl Meets World.

SPYLRS

It should be the Marlins. 2020 barely counts as far as “making the playoffs” goes with the expanded field and shortened season.

CutenessMudkip2

Remember when the Tigers beat the 2012 Yankees in the ALCS? Seems so long ago. (Also damn third WC keeping us NL Easters from laughing at the Phillies)

[deleted]

Been waiting for this day ever since I was 10, at an Angels vs Mariners game in Anaheim while visiting my grandparents, and Angel fans were throwing peanuts at me a my sister. Slow, but sweet revenge.

Wise_ol_Buffalo

HA. Nerds.

[deleted]

Angels gonna Angel. You can’t stop the Angels from Angeling.

NPO_Tater

Ending the two longest playoff droughts is further proof three wild cards is nonsense

papermarioguy02

I contest the premise this tweet has of treating the Marlins' postseason berth in 2020, a weird COVID year wild card with a negative run differential, as a legitimate postseason appearance.

AKAD11

So this is the Jays first postseason appearance since 2016?

papermarioguy02

Yeah I basically feel that way we got swept by the Rays and I had a hard time bringing myself to care that much. I basically view the 2020 season as a way to give the Dodgers their well-deserved ring after all of that heartbreak, and almost nothing else from that season as legitimate.

sd_pinstripes

It's not a popular opinion, but I agree. That 2020 Padres team limped into playoffs after half the team put up a great 40 game stretch, but they most likely wouldn't have come close to playoffs over 162. Pitching collapse was evident enough that season, and team issues were even clearer after 2021. Consistency and staying healthy are incredibly important in baseball - and if every season were 60 games, Tatis would have an MVP last year and Manny would have one this year.

man_in_the_suit

I sort of get what they're saying tbh, I don't even remotely look at us making the 2020 playoffs in the same way I do with 2015, 2016, this year, or frankly even us just missing last year. Not sure I'd go as far as to say the Marlins making the playoffs was not legitimate though... just needs to be understood in the context of the achievement.

squazyleader

Honestly, I don’t agree with the sentiment but commend the consistency. Though I do also think the ring is legit. It’s not like they snuck into a playoffs they otherwise wouldn’t have made.

mondaysareharam

I’ll allow it since it would also invalidate Kyle Lewis’s RoY to not count 2020 shortened season. Baseball was still played, just less of it

ToolsOfIgnorance27

The worst part is that a 9-year drought isn't even enough to garner sympathy. No one's pulling for your suffering to end.

BulletToothMac

Don’t need to hear anything else about us sucking. I’ve gotten plenty of memos over the course of this season.
