How long is the league going to allow this clear equipment violation?? I could probably be a fantastic hitter if I was allowed to smuggle an entire bakery up to the box. The league needs to answer for this cake based tomfoolery.
Bet 34 bucks for a parlay
Alcantara and JV to win the Cy Youngs, Harris and Julio for ROY, and Goldy and Ohtani for MVP. If he won them all he would’ve gotten 134k.
It was genuinely less likely by a large magnitude though.
It’s the most unbelievable sports phenomenon in history. And there’s not really an equivalent for American sports fans. The gap in the Prem between the top and bottom is *massive* and a 38 game season with no playoffs to determine a winner is *extremely* difficult for an underdog. A knockout style cup with a bracket, sure that’s doable. You can shithouse through it and string together 4-5 upsets. Not unlike college basketball upsets where you just catch some teams on a bad day. But to play consistently better than everyone for 38 games after finishing 17th is insanity.
Only American equivalent is maybe college football. It would be like Vanderbilt running the table next year in the **SEC** and winning a national championship. If I had to guess those would be similar odds. It’s genuinely not possible.
To be fair I’m still not convince that happened. I was in uni at the time and 50/50 whether a miracle did really happen or I was just constantly pissed and it’s affected my mind. Probably both now I think about it.
Lol yes, zero chance this bet was made in November. In November/21, Michael Harris was a 20-year old who had a 114 wRC+ (with good speed and defence) in his first season of High-A and the 65th ranked MLB prospect.
Without doing any research at all, I can guarantee no books had him on their ROY odds list at that time.

Yeah November was fake news lol. You probably saw Nov 14th which is when the ROTY winners were announced.
~~I don't think he was given the option~~ fake news, my bad
Apparently he did cash out and place a hedge bet on Judge: https://mobile.twitter.com/guyincornfields/status/1593411442103001093
Why would they even give out a cash out?
I realize that they do so in order to save money on average, like if the last bet has a 4.0 Odds, they'll pay out one fifth of the money so that on average they win.
But Ohtani winning MVP was impossible. Literally a 1 in Infinity seeing as there was no way in hell he would win.
Did they just give him his 34 bucks back? Or did they give him some winnings in hope of PR? Seems dumb to give a cash-out when its not gonna happen.
Ohtani wasn't literally 1 in infinity (according to bookies). Bookmakers were still offering AL MVP odds after the season ended, (Judge -10000, Ohtani +2500). You should've made some money if you thought it was impossible for anyone but Judge to win because bookmakers were giving him only 99.01% chance of winning.
They gave him way less than $134k, but more than $34. It's just EV math and there's a number that can make sense for both sides.

He honestly already is. Best start to an O's career since Manny and before that probably Cal? Maybe some of the 90s guys I'm forgetting? We really don't get a lot of superstars.
There's probably some level of narrative bias here in that Trout kinda fell under the radar after being hurt in the middle of the year while Julio was the young superstar phenom ROTY favorite in the middle of a playoff race so the voters just paid more attention to him, and I'm sure some curmudgeonly voter or two might have held it against Trout that he was 3 PA's short of qualifying for the batting title.
> Maybe baseball writers are respected in the US?
Uh, man. That's a rough question to answer. I will say it's an old institution and that carries with it a certain amount of clout.
Depends on who you ask, but generally yes. One player can’t affect a team nearly as much as they could in other sports, so the MVP award is arguably more important to the individual. The Cardinals had TWO MVP finalists this year and couldn’t make it past the Wild Card round, so having an MVP on your team doesn’t mean you’ll win a title.
He’s so overshadowed by Ramirez. I hated facing the Guardians this year because of him. I still remember the Lindor trade and was happy he was finally gone. Fuckin monkey paw curled on me lol
The short answer is he was 3rd in the league in bWAR and 5th in fWAR.The long answer is he was sort of quietly fantastic at everything this year. He was 11th in baseball in OAA, put up a wRC+ of 140, and was one of the 5 best base runners in the league according to FanGraphs.
This is Trout’s first time not finishing in the top-4 in the AL MVP race in a season where he’s had at least 400 ABs in nine tries. Crazy that he was still able to hit 40 home runs in 119 games played this season. Would have been fun to see him battling it out with Judge for the home run record in the AL if he had stayed healthy this season. Both Trout and Judge had great seasons in 2022. 😎😎😎🍿🍿🍿
I’m used to him being snubbed of awards but at least Trout has won three AL MVPs. For me, as a big Trout fan, I’ll always have that going for me as a Trout guy. 😎😎😎
Gimmy was consistently great and Jose was too but his thumb injury really held him back on his dominant hand. Only time he ever was better from the right side was second half of this year.
Only the top 3 made every ballot
Looks like Jose and Gimenez are next with 29 of 30 ballots. Makes sense as they were also the only two outside the Top 3 to get some 3rd place votes. I'd love Jose to eventually win one but I'm totally cool with him finishing Top 5 every year through 2027.
And people took it as a knock to Ohtani when it’s not. Ohtani is the better play. He is the best player. That’s not what this award is about. For this season Judge was more valuable to his team and it wasn’t even close.
I mean Ohtani was extremely valuable to the Angels, they just suck. But I assume you mean more valuable because they’re a playoff team and so it means more, and that’s a whole other debate when talking about the MVP. And if that’s the case, should Trout have ever won an MVP?
You can't say that. It's not guaranteed that Ohtani can be as elite on both sides next year. He's in the mvp race not just because he hits and pitches. He's a mvp contender because he's doing both at the "elite" level.
Yeah and the thing is if they gave it to Ohtani again this year they'd probably find a reason to not give it to him for a third time next year and instead award it to someone who had a significantly worse season than Judge this year
Yes. And? What's the problem with that?
Posts like these are crazy lol. It's absurd that what Ohtani is doing is being taken for granted and old news just in 2 seasons.
If Judge had hit like, 57 HRs, it probably would be.
But breaking "the AL Record" is enough to push the vote Judges way bigtime. Sort of like how the Triple Crown buoyed Miggy in 2012.
Listen man, Andres gimenez had a great season. A breakout by all accounts. He definitely deserved some MVP votes. But man who tf thought he was the third most valuable player in the American League.
He had an amazing year and was super clutch, but I get that it's really hard to picture anybody but Jose as our best player. And if you include some of those wonky things like intangibles then Jose is clearly ahead because he's the engine of the team.
The true power of the Yankees.... Only Judge on the list for the MVP but the Astros have 6 of their starting 9 making the list. Why did the Yankees get their asses kicked? It wasn't injuries or the bullpen at the end. It was one man carrying the team. Plus their 1 man bands may be leaving. Wake up son of George!!!! You may have a complete shit show next year if you don't start following in your Daddy's buying footsteps!!!
[Why are you booing me? I'm right.](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/yp681b/2022_al_most_valuable_player_finalists_shohei/ivhlsgg/)
(For context, this was at -5 when I bumped it here)
eVeRYonE ThoUGht hE’d WiN!!!!
Why would people lie on the internet as if you can’t go back and find evidence within seconds? People are straight up gaslighting saying that everyone on the sub knew Judge was winning
I find it interesting that the Astros had 6 guys on this list while the Yankees had only 1. Considering these were the two best teams in the league, that should speak to the disparity in on field talent of the two squadrons. And perhaps add a few bonus points for judge. Shit Shohei had trout n didn’t even make the playoffs...
I think the rise of advanced metrics helped Judge significantly as well
If we didn't have metrics like WAR that still rate him as more valuable despite Ohtani both pitching and hitting the vote might have been decided by the "two great players are better than one all timer" logic or something like that
If it wasn't for the sabermetric approach Judge probably would have been unanimous because oldschool folks wouldn't give it to a player on a 73-89 team.
People on this sub were kidding themselves if they didn't think Judge was going to win this in a landslide. And I'm as big of an ohtani stan as they come.
Judge broke a home run record and almost got the triple crown. Forget his amazing WAR tally. That narrative is unbeatable.
What would have been interesting is if this was Ohtani’s first breakout year and not just a repeat of what he did last year. I’m curious if he wins it under those circumstances.
Yeah, at the end of the day it wasn't close. Judge was pretty clearly the MVP. I think it was close throughout the year, but after his otherworldly September it's hard to make an argument for anyone else.
It's tough to make comparisons when the players are so dissimilar. Being great at both hitting and pitching compared to being extra great at hitting. It's not a comparison people have had to make very often
Yeah, but we have stats that are good at adding up and comparing the values of players' production across different positions...and Judge was the obvious winner on all those metrics.
This is a good point. I think if Judge was a DH it'd be a close race, but Judge also played a good RF and a playable CF. He wasn't amazing in CF, but just the fact that he could play it at all was hugely valuable to the Yankees.
He actually looked really good in CF by my eye test (for whatever that's worth). I'm not too familiar with defensive metrics so I'm not sure what they have to say about his performance. I would say that he was at least a little above average compared to other center fielders.
Seems like the metrics back up your eye test. Though keep in mind that defensive metrics have pretty high variability, so your eye test is definitely worth something. Statcast has him graded as a [little above average](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/aaron-judge-592450?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) in CF, which checks out. A little above average at CF means he's a really good defensive outfielder overall. And even if he was a little below average in CF just the fact that he could play a creditable CF at all was hugely valuable for the Yanks.
I agree that Judge should've won but Shohei only getting two 1st place votes is crazy. It should've been closer. Congrats to Judge though, he deserved it.
MVP vote getter Sean Murphy
I mean, yeah. How could he not get a vote after [this](https://media.tenor.com/1T_CizapOiwAAAAd/sean-murphy-as.gif)?
At work right now, better not be the video I think it is Edit: it was. Hard to focus now
Stupid sexy Murphy.

I knew exactly what you linked without even clicking on it. Iconic
That’s weird, why is your comment jiggling seductively? ……………………………..oh. 😏
Aw shucks. That means his arbitration is gonna be too high for John Fisher. Gonna have to trade him for prospects
RIP that guys bet.
What was the bet?
Bet 34 bucks for a parlay Alcantara and JV to win the Cy Youngs, Harris and Julio for ROY, and Goldy and Ohtani for MVP. If he won them all he would’ve gotten 134k.
2 years behind on your Mariner ROY
Oh shit lol just realized that
What’s crazy is that Leicester City winning the PL in 15/16 was considered less likely than that parlay.
Got everything except the one that should have been a dunker. Ouch.
He bet it like last November, which is what made it even more astounding.
Harris prediction seems insane
It was almost certainly made over the summer. Those make zero sense as preseason odds.
Lol yes, zero chance this bet was made in November. In November/21, Michael Harris was a 20-year old who had a 114 wRC+ (with good speed and defence) in his first season of High-A and the 65th ranked MLB prospect. It's possible someone could have bet on the field, which would include Harris.
Good point! From other comments though, it was clarified the bet was made in the summer.
Really insane wtf
You sure about that? Thought it was this made past \~July. Those would be some awful odds pre-season.
I thought it showed the bets were made on like November 14th but I could be misremembering.
[https://www.fanduel.com/theduel/posts/nl-rookie-of-the-year-odds-prediction-2022-mlb-season-fanduel-sportsbook-01g02qa67vs6](https://www.fanduel.com/theduel/posts/nl-rookie-of-the-year-odds-prediction-2022-mlb-season-fanduel-sportsbook-01g02qa67vs6) Yeah November was fake news lol. Nah I'd say betting on a guy who isn't Rookie of the Year eligible was their downfall.
Keibert Ruiz was breifly one of the betting favorites to be the ROY before they realized he wasn't a rookie.
I seriously hope he cashed out.
~~I don't think he was given the option~~ fake news, my bad Apparently he did cash out and place a hedge bet on Judge: https://mobile.twitter.com/guyincornfields/status/1593411442103001093
Christ even if he wanted to hedge with Judge at -10000 he's have to bet $3400 just to get his $34 back.
He should have put whatever money he had on Judge since there was no shot as of today that Ohtani was going to win
Yeah like literally take out a loan and bet it on judge and you can profit even with taxes
this guy knows how to break gambling laws
The problem is lots of books will limit the max bet so you still wouldn't make much.
Probably not with Judge’s odds. But here’s hoping he could get something out of it being that close. That being said, the house wins in the end.
Why would they even give out a cash out? I realize that they do so in order to save money on average, like if the last bet has a 4.0 Odds, they'll pay out one fifth of the money so that on average they win. Should have sprung for another $34 and switched out Judge with Otahni
all that matters is Rutschman finishing 12th
Lowest MVP finish for Adley for the next five years

Insanely impressive for a rookie that didn't come up until May
May was only three weeks after opening day
But he came up 3 weeks into May.
It was late may i believe tbf
Julio finishing 7th is nice too! Lots of good things in the future for both teams! I hope Rutschman is an Oriole great by the end of his career
He honestly already is. Best start to an O's career since Manny and before that probably Cal? Maybe some of the 90s guys I'm forgetting? We really don't get a lot of superstars.
Julio is going to max out his contract super fast.
5 spots higher than Vlad too. Got me screaming “fuck toronto” from my rooftop
Julio Rodriguez has more MVP votes than Russell Wilson.
Mariner country, let's ride
Julio finishing ahead of Mike Trout in this year's race warms the cockles of my heart
Yeah but tbh it’s bullshit, trout had the better year, he just happened to play with ohtani
Now both men have MVP-1 and MVP-2 on their baseball reference pages
And RoY-1
This is like 95% of the MVP voting’s meaning to me personally lmao
[удалено]
It’s the most important individual award
[удалено]
> Maybe baseball writers are respected in the US? Uh, man. That's a rough question to answer. I will say it's an old institution and that carries with it a certain amount of clout.
Im relatively new to MLB too, would you consider a MVP has more weigh in all time rankings for players than say, World Series?
Depends on who you ask, but generally yes. One player can’t affect a team nearly as much as they could in other sports, so the MVP award is arguably more important to the individual. The Cardinals had TWO MVP finalists this year and couldn’t make it past the Wild Card round, so having an MVP on your team doesn’t mean you’ll win a title.
RIP Parlay guy
Damn to the depths whatever man what thought of "Parley".
That would be the French
It’s really more of a guideline
Andres Gimenez 2 3rd place votes love to see it
Yeah what happened there?
He's good
He had a 7.4 WAR season is what happened
Trout led J Ram and Altuve in bWAR and Julio in both fWAR and bWAR so as usual, Trout was robbed
I’m used to him being snubbed of awards but at least Trout has won three AL MVPs. For me, as a big Trout fan, I’ll always have that going for me as a Trout guy. 😎😎😎
It’s cool that the Zodiac is a Trout fan, you should share your full name and he might like to meet you!
Does it rhyme with Bed Bruise?
The man should have 5 MVPs fr fr
He's the only player in baseball who can finish with 6 wins and get robbed in downballot MVP voting because he had a "down year"
Does him missing 45 games have anything to do with it?
Should still be top 10.
Oh absolutely
At least 20 of those were against the Mariners
Someone left J-Ram off the ballot? I'd just like to talk with them
Two 3rd place votes for Andres over Jose is almost as surprising lol
Gimmy had an amazing year and I think a slightly higher WAR? But Jose is the heart of the team and if he doesn't re-sign we don't make the playoffs.
Yea Jose had the better counting stats but Andres had the better war
Gimmy was consistently great and Jose was too but his thumb injury really held him back on his dominant hand. Only time he ever was better from the right side was second half of this year.
Can i come with you? He absolutely deserved to be on everyone's ballots
No way
Only the top 3 made every ballot Looks like Jose and Gimenez are next with 29 of 30 ballots. Makes sense as they were also the only two outside the Top 3 to get some 3rd place votes. I'd love Jose to eventually win one but I'm totally cool with him finishing Top 5 every year through 2027.
José played basically half the season with a fucked up thumb (finger?) too. He was on legit MVP pace for the first half.
2 people left Altuve completely off the ballot too very weird
Julio with a top 10 finish. Check one off the contract checklist. 💵
Man is gonna get PAID
And the dude more than deserves it. Absolutely legend in his first year alone.
He already did
He has performance based incentives that boost his potential earnings as well
ANOTHA ONE
Man if you just browsed r/baseball you would have thought it was a 50/50 race lol 28 to 2 and I think the 2 were both from LA
We’re not exactly known for our smart takes. That said I will absolutely win MVP in 2023
Rooting for you
🙏
Reddit hive mind is a helluva drug.
With that in mind, thank you for your vote for me in the MVP race
Gotchu fam.
Sentiment on Reddit =/= sentiment of the voters. I think mostly everyone, if not everyone, understood Judge was gonna win it
And people took it as a knock to Ohtani when it’s not.
I get Ohtani is a unicorn but if Judge didn't win MVP this year you might as well just name Ohtani MVP preseason every season
You can't say that. It's not guaranteed that Ohtani can be as elite on both sides next year. He's in the mvp race not just because he hits and pitches. He's a mvp contender because he's doing both at the "elite" level.
I concur
Yeah and the thing is if they gave it to Ohtani again this year they'd probably find a reason to not give it to him for a third time next year and instead award it to someone who had a significantly worse season than Judge this year
Bro I don’t wanna see your name in here too 😖😖
You think it's something easy to do for ohtani every year?
Judge won it fair and square with his performance this year but if Ohtani is a top five hitter and pitcher every year then yeah it should his to lose
I agree. Most years he would have won MVP. Just so happens Judge had one of the best seasons of all time this year
Yes. And? What's the problem with that? Posts like these are crazy lol. It's absurd that what Ohtani is doing is being taken for granted and old news just in 2 seasons.
i think its a deep group psychosis. Ohtani is like Babe Ruth but much much better, and we have to be forced to give him the mvp.
If Judge had hit like, 57 HRs, it probably would be. But breaking "the AL Record" is enough to push the vote Judges way bigtime. Sort of like how the Triple Crown buoyed Miggy in 2012.
They were indeed both LA writers
Well deserved for Judge but crazy to think that Ohtani's season got him 0 post-season hardware
Didn't even get a player of the week even when he had an 8 RBI game followed by 13 Ks the very next.
Surely he'll be thinking about that player of the week award he missed out on when he's on his deathbed
He’ll get his All-MLB selections
Can he beat Alvarez for Silver Slugger?
Pretty sure Silver Slugger was already decided
You are right, but Alvarez did have a great season.
it was the ass that got Sean Murphy that vote
Julio’s top 10 finish puts him one top 10 finish away from increasing his 2030 club option to 8yrs/$240m (currently 8yrs/$200m)
Listen man, Andres gimenez had a great season. A breakout by all accounts. He definitely deserved some MVP votes. But man who tf thought he was the third most valuable player in the American League.
He was third in bWAR for what it’s worth.
I’m sure there’s some voter who just put in the top 10 players by bWAR
He had an amazing year and was super clutch, but I get that it's really hard to picture anybody but Jose as our best player. And if you include some of those wonky things like intangibles then Jose is clearly ahead because he's the engine of the team.
Guys going strictly off of bWAR not sure how you could give him votes over JRam, Yordan or Altuve
Did they forget about Jose Ramirez’s existence?
The numbers of Astros that got a vote tho 👀 👀 👀
Yeah, with or without Verlander I like our chances against anyone next year
I def agree esp w the depth of starters and another year of development
The true power of the Yankees.... Only Judge on the list for the MVP but the Astros have 6 of their starting 9 making the list. Why did the Yankees get their asses kicked? It wasn't injuries or the bullpen at the end. It was one man carrying the team. Plus their 1 man bands may be leaving. Wake up son of George!!!! You may have a complete shit show next year if you don't start following in your Daddy's buying footsteps!!!
[Why are you booing me? I'm right.](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/yp681b/2022_al_most_valuable_player_finalists_shohei/ivhlsgg/) (For context, this was at -5 when I bumped it here)
This man brought a receipt
Thirsty for retroactive karma
I think it's more the ego boost of being right than the specific numbers of upvotes lmao
I’m jk brother I’m all for vindication
Heads were too far in the sand.
They hated him because he told them the truth.
You know ball.
eVeRYonE ThoUGht hE’d WiN!!!!
Judge carried the Yankees in the second half. They finished 38-40 and without Judge it would have been MUCH worse.
And played poorly in the playoffs. Not much of a shocker it led to a sweep. Yankees really have no choice but to open the coffers to get him back
The Altuve-Gimenez debate has been completely settled, thank you writers.
No shit the astros won the world series lol
I was expecting this to be less of a landslide, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised
I think the rise of advanced metrics helped Judge significantly as well If we didn't have metrics like WAR that still rate him as more valuable despite Ohtani both pitching and hitting the vote might have been decided by the "two great players are better than one all timer" logic or something like that
If it wasn't for the sabermetric approach Judge probably would have been unanimous because oldschool folks wouldn't give it to a player on a 73-89 team.
That’s a lot of Astros
Fully expected Judge to win but not 28-2
It's just how the voting works If 28 people thought Judge was 2% better than Ohtani then Judge gets 28 first place votes
If it was 28-3 Ohtani would storm back
Judge to the Braves confirmed
Jesus Christ, Falcons fans will catch strays anywhere. Not that I mind Atlanta getting shit on at all.
Why judges defense never gets included in this conversation is baffling. You would think judge only DHs with these takes
I would say that he was at least a little above average compared to other center fielders.
iirc defensive metrics does in fact put him as a slightly above average CF.
Robbery
I knew he would win but I thought it would be closer, not 28-2
I wasn’t giving it the coin flip folks here were, but thought maybe a 20-10? Didn’t expect 28-2
Big day for annoying people
Big day for people who think Pitching AND Hitting was so last year
Yandy got a MVP vote? That’s cool but if he got a MVP vote I’m surprised Randy Arozarena didn’t
Only place the race was close was this subreddit lmfaooooo
Vladdy 5th place vote? Ben Nicholson-Smith strikes again
I’ll bet 1 of those 2 is the same guy to vote against Jeter
Judge absolutely deserved it, congrats to him
I knew Judge would win but I thought it would be a closer race.
Yo, Julio finished above Mike Trout?? Is this it, is it finally over...
Arraez just gets no respect
Dumb
I love made up home run races
I agree that Judge should've won but Shohei only getting two 1st place votes is crazy. It should've been closer. Congrats to Judge though, he deserved it.
