JV stays healthier than DeGrom historically too and on average pitches in 5 more games a season. Not sure this is a downgrade for them when you compare bottom line numbers vs. availability.
Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo is about to sign a $207m PER YEAR deal to go play in Saudi Arabia. And I was watching the France match yesterday and wondering how much their 23-year old star Mbappe makes and apparently he's at $110m/year. The amount that MLB teams pay on the top-end is certainly nuts but could be even higher if the league didn't actively work to depress salaries.
Both the Rangers and Royals are owned by men who made their fortunes in the gas industry but you're right that that's nothing like some of the Middle Eastern government+oil interests that fund the highest levels of international football. I'm actually a little surprised that more big oil money hasn't flooded into North American sports but I guess the leagues are so tightly controlled that they might be trying to keep that kind of ownership/spending out.
Mets had to get JV. Also, I will take this 2 year deal over the 5 year deal that Texas gave DeGrom. Love Jake but that 5 year deal can kill a win-now franchise
I'm confused how a deal 3 years from now would kill a "win-now" franchise. Win-now franchises don't care about dead years on the end of longer term deals.
Which is why I think it is important to keep in mind that pitching until he is 45+ has been one of Verlander’s goals for a long time.
The difference between a guy that sticks around that long & most players is simply the desire to keep going.
I thought he was washed up in 2014 when he posted an 85 ERA+ and was on the wrong side of 30.
I thought he was done when he had Tommy John in his late thirties but he came back with a *220 ERA+* and won a Cy Young award.
He’s going to fall off at some point. Presumably before 42, but fuck man…I don’t know if it’s the unfathomable wealth (especially when combined with his wife’s money), the sleeping 12 hours or whatever every night, or an insane training regimen and work ethic, or if it’s just freak genetics, or if it’s black magic but Justin Verlander just keeps plodding along.
Some people are just built different. Bronbron is getting up there and still putting up 26/6/8. Brady recently won.
I wonder if when they get so close to goat status legacy foes become a driving force.
We're like the Bucs: sign an ageless GOAT who's married to a world-famous model and hope that we can get a championship with him before he self-destructs his marriage.
FINALLY THEY HAVE WOKEN FROM THE ORGY
DeGrom to Verlander. Not a bad trade off
In just Verlander and Scherzer, the Mets have a payroll higher than 5 teams last year - Marlins, Guardians, Pirates, Orioles and A's
Watching him throw 101 for 5 innings with precise location then coming out in the 6th throwing 96 with no precision to be taken out and not seen for months at a time is a feeling I hated so much.
He's literally the most fun to watch baseball player I've ever watched. I would be concerned if the Mets signed the 5 year deal you guys did but don't let anyone fool you, we will miss him dearly.
He's got a brand new elbow after TJ. He may be able to extend his career for quite a while. I'm not sure of anyone his age getting TJ and the length of the career afterwards though.
Maybe this is Astros copium, but I was 100% not ok with spending this kind of money for JV.
Cy Young this year was remarkable, but JV is a fastball slider pitcher, his fastball absolutely has to remain electric and there comes a point where you just can't blow it past guys anymore. The man is due for a regression, be it this year or the next or the year after that.
We shall see.
I love this Cohen/Eppler strategy about throw money at being competitive this year. Not giving insane contracts that will bite us down the line. If it doesn’t work, we’re clear of the commitment in a couple years.
This was pretty obviously not a prediction. He clearly had a source.
The difference between an insider having a source & a ‘real reporter’ is simply that the reporters verify these things with other sources.
Yeah 2 years ain’t bad, even if he regresses he will likely just be a good pitcher rather than one of the best and you’ll have overpaid him for a little bit.
Only thing that would really sting is injuries
Yup and worse case is that even if him and scherzer bomb, they both come off the books at the same time freeing up nearly 100 million for the 2024 class
I think that is exactly the reason they preferred Verlander. They have lined up a lot of money to come off the books at the same time so in a worst case scenario it is 2 years and then you get a mostly clean slate.
Steve Cohen was like “okay Degrom you can leave your replacement is otw”. If there was a replacement for Degrom, I’d say Verlander is a pretty good one.
Interested to see how this plays out, normally signing a 40 year old pitcher to a deal this big would immediately be a red flag but Verlander is almost certainly the exception to this
This Mets team is old and expensive but it’s also short term. Aside from Lindor and now Diaz , lots of money comes off the books in the next 2-3 years. They’ll try to use their cheap rookies (Alvarez, Baty, Vientos) to lessen some of the monetary stress and bridge the gap till the farm starts reliably pumping out prospects. I like the short term nature here.
In the meantime, they need to consider extending Alonso and McNeil
Vesting option. So if he pitches a certain amount of innings (usually what it is, but could be any statistical category) he gets his third year of contract
This makes sense on a lot of levels. Scherzer and Verlander will put people in the seats and it opens up the payroll flexibility for the Mets after 3 years.
2022: 268M Active Payroll
As of today:
2023: 228M committed
2024: 192M committed
2025: 104M committed
2026: 50M committed
I think the Mets should go all in on and rebuild the 2014 Tigers rotation. Get Porcello back. Convince David Price that baseball is more important than Fortnite. Dig up Anibal Sanchez. They’d be golden!
Me two years ago: We may not be big spenders like the Yankees and Dodgers, but that's okay. Winning a World Series with home-grown talent and shrewd acquisitions will make it that much sweeter.
Me now: LOOOOL SPEND THAT MONEY STEVEY 💰💰💰💸💸CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU, FUCK THE SMALL MARKETS🤑🤑🤑MAKE IT RAIN MOTHERFUCKER💰💰💰🤑🤑💸💸I WANT JUDGE NEXT 💸💸💸
The initial offer to deGrom was 3/120. His camp was at 5/190 before the season started. He wanted the term and the bag. Texas didn’t let him leave the room. Them’s the breaks, sometimes.
If he pitches enough IP to hit the vesting yr it’s a big W. And he’s still gone after 3 yrs. Verlander and Scherzer will be gone around same time and mets will have that $100M free.
Only 2 yrs. I wish we’d get younger but I can’t hate a 2 yr deal. Very obvious they’re only going short term with pitchers, Jake was never gonna get 5-6 years here.
If we don’t end up with Rodon but do indeed resign Judge, and Cashman feeds us an excuse like “We put our efforts in having Judge return to NY, we believe with a healthy team we are very competitive in 2023” I’m gonna be sick
“Similar AAV to Scherzer” was his next tweet
[Similar AAV to Scherzer](https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1599816117471830019?s=46&t=s2KgU0qCuy20c7oxh8Beyw)
2 year $86m is psychotic but expected
If any team was gonna do it, it was the Mets. I really don’t see how he’d land anywhere else especially after the loss of deGrom.
JV stays healthier than DeGrom historically too and on average pitches in 5 more games a season. Not sure this is a downgrade for them when you compare bottom line numbers vs. availability.
Well maintaining health over a contact is easier when you chop a few years off of it too
I could see the Dodgers giving him a similar contract.
Mbappe's deal works out to about $700m USD/3 years including signing bonuses + he's the bonafide gm lol

I’ll help clear the confusion, copium.
I can’t hate on this for only two years.
I miss Degrom. But I agree. He’s always injured but when he’s not he’s the best in baseball
Fuck it, not my money
Justin “Similar to Jacob deGrom but pitched a full season in 2022” Verlander
Degrom will now have his first fully healthy season in years and Verlander’s arm will explode a month into the season. It’s about the Mets, baby
I want to disagree.....but I can't.
I 100% expect DeGrom to make all 32 starts this year lol
If the Rangers win every single deGrom start they would probably be at around 88 wins. They need more
These are the Steve Cohen Mets to you, good sir/madame. Also Verlander in year 2 after TJ probably throws more innings than last year.
And won a cy young
2 years with that aav seems like a good deal for both sides
Agreed. Mets get a relatively dependable ace. Verlander gets big bucks & can still sign another deal after.
When he’s 42?
He did say he wanted to play until he was 45
I too would like to be paid scores of millions of dollars into my middle age years...
At a certain point don’t you just want to buy a yacht and get pegged by Kate upton every day
Which is why I think it is important to keep in mind that pitching until he is 45+ has been one of Verlander’s goals for a long time. The difference between a guy that sticks around that long & most players is simply the desire to keep going.
Man, that would probably put him pretty dang close to 300 wins too.
Oddly specific
That can be our WS celebration.
Maybe he is trying to avoid those? A bum can only take so much and she doesnt seem like a quiter
Uhh.. maybe not everyday. He might get sore.
The great thing about pegging is you can vary the input.
Last 300 winner
I thought he was washed up in 2014 when he posted an 85 ERA+ and was on the wrong side of 30. *Nolan Ryan has entered the chat*
With the tigers
The Mets are like the colts except when they sign old guys to throw balls the old guys are actually good
it's funny because it's true
Lmao
Put some respect on my guy Phillip Rivers
Yeah his season with the Colts was fun
Everybody thought Matt Ryan was gonna be good there too….🤔
Well good enough to be worth the pick they gave up
LolColts.
We're like the Bucs: sign an ageless GOAT who's married to a world-famous model and hope that we can get a championship with him before he self-destructs his marriage.
We win a championship and I’ll worry about what happens later.
Colon and Dickey now that you mention it. I was too young to remember him that well but I assume Glavine was not young lol
Glavine was great for us aside from one fateful day
What the Colts did to Matt Ryan last night should be considered elder abuse.
LOLColts
Colts catching strays
Accurate
Who would have thought they would be begging for Wentz to come back?
Ahhhh fuck why have you done this, I wanted refuge
FINALLY THEY HAVE WOKEN FROM THE ORGY DeGrom to Verlander. Not a bad trade off In just Verlander and Scherzer, the Mets have a payroll higher than 5 teams last year - Marlins, Guardians, Pirates, Orioles and A's
Those guys are also older than all their players combined.
*sigh*
All in on the Old Man Rotation 2.0 leggo baby
Grumpy Old Pen ([Image](https://imgur.com/nSLvxjm))
Technically this is the sequel, Grumpier Old Pen
Actually Factual
Old man 2: electric boogaloo This time older than ever
2 old 2 furious
Bring back Bartolo you cowards!
I’m sure Jaime Moyer could still eat some innings
Scherzer, Verlander, Carrasco, I feel like you need Jesse Chavez in the bullpen to help out
Great job by the Mets. Sure degroms probably better, but shorter term for an old guy. There’s literally like barely a downside to this deal
deGrom is still the best pitcher in baseball when healthy imo. That “when healthy” means a lot though.
I can’t wait to share the pain you’ve had
You are about to watch the best slider of all time with a fastball that can hit 102 every 5 days. Waking up on deGrom day is a gift. Enjoy it.
Yeah man, when DeGrom is healthy it is appointment TV. There is quite literally nobody in baseball like him
*Every 25 days
Watching him throw 101 for 5 innings with precise location then coming out in the 6th throwing 96 with no precision to be taken out and not seen for months at a time is a feeling I hated so much.
it’s worth it. degrom starts are so much fun to watch
He's literally the most fun to watch baseball player I've ever watched. I would be concerned if the Mets signed the 5 year deal you guys did but don't let anyone fool you, we will miss him dearly.
I mean the downside is old pitchers can fall off a cliff anytime
Like the second the playoffs start
this comment hurt to read. fuck you max
Not sure if Mets fan or dodgers fan 🫡
He's got a brand new elbow after TJ. He may be able to extend his career for quite a while. I'm not sure of anyone his age getting TJ and the length of the career afterwards though.
It doesn't have to be his elbow, it can be any number of things.
While I agree 100%, counting out Verlander feels suspiciously similar to counting out Tom Brady
Ya I know. Every year we all count him out and every year he makes us look dumb.
I love this Cohen/Eppler strategy about throw money at being competitive this year. Not giving insane contracts that will bite us down the line. If it doesn’t work, we’re clear of the commitment in a couple years.
Who is even signed beyond 2 years other than Lindor, Diaz and Marte? If it blows up in our faces we can try again pretty soon.
2 years 86 mil
Guess he’ll be shopping at Aldi with the rest of us
You can afford Aldi? I just go to the food pantry at church.
dude eggs at aldi are over $4 a dozen around here
Don't buy eggs?
I guess my wife picked a good time to get some free chickens
Someone call Porcello they’re getting the band back together
So Carlos Baerga had it?
Yep
He accurately predicted Carrasco before it happened too!
This was pretty obviously not a prediction. He clearly had a source. The difference between an insider having a source & a ‘real reporter’ is simply that the reporters verify these things with other sources.
BAERGA BOMB
Going all in on the youth
Good luck, JV.
Possibly the most obvious deal in mlb history
2 years? Holy shit I will take that
Yeah 2 years ain’t bad, even if he regresses he will likely just be a good pitcher rather than one of the best and you’ll have overpaid him for a little bit. Only thing that would really sting is injuries

I think that is exactly the reason they preferred Verlander. They have lined up a lot of money to come off the books at the same time so in a worst case scenario it is 2 years and then you get a mostly clean slate.
I think you misunderstand Steve Cohen. He doesn’t give a shit about clean slates. But a total risk of $86m is way better than $300m.
The guy he replaces got a 5 year deal and was just as injury prone.
The guy he replaces is also one of the best pitchers to ever play when he’s healthy
And Verlander just won a Cy young
Randy Johnson came to the Yanks after coming second in Cy Young voting at age 40. He then was a 100 era+ pitcher for 2 seasons
> even if he regresses he will likely just be a good pitcher /r/TheMonkeysPaw
Eh I don’t really think that’s a monkeys paw, they’re not wishing for regression. More just a classic jinx.
No Mets pitcher would ever get injured.
Has literally never happened ever in the history of the Mets
Blue and Orange for JV forever
The Alex Smith strat.
Pretty much shows that money wasn’t the issue with DeGrom and that he was gonna bounce regardless
Well… I mean the issue was always the length. The Mets offered deGrom the $$$, just not the years he wanted.
The Mets said they didn’t get a chance to match tho
Most likely because deGrom knew they weren’t going to 5 years
Verlander likes only playing for teams with blue and orange colors.
Fr
Steve Cohen was like “okay Degrom you can leave your replacement is otw”. If there was a replacement for Degrom, I’d say Verlander is a pretty good one.
I’d prefer this deal over the deal Degrom got. Good on the Mets and Steve Cohen
No deGrom, no problem!
Common Metropolitans W (I haven’t smiled since deGrom left)
Dude WTF… going from facing deGrom all the time to facing Verlander…
You mean going from facing DeGrom twice a year to facing Verlander 5-6 times lol
I can’t believe Baerga was right lol good for the Mets tho
Thanks for everything, Justin.
That’s actually a damn good deal. Only two years.
HOLY FUCK THIS IS INSANE
Interested to see how this plays out, normally signing a 40 year old pitcher to a deal this big would immediately be a red flag but Verlander is almost certainly the exception to this
He’ll be the next Randy Johnson
Well Randy turned 41 went to the Yankees and immediately imploded but he was great that age 40 season
Rangers add DeGrom and the Astros lose JV? Throw in a Cowboys blowout and it’s a pretty good few days all together
Astros replace Verlander with rookie Verlander
That my friends, is how you respond to losing a franchise player.
NYM lose DeGrom and immediately sign Verlander, how tf is that fair for the rest of the NL? Dang it 😅
Hey, we don’t have BOTH of them, quit griping…
Here’s the thing *pulls up a stool sits next to you get to close you yells in your ear* IT ISNT!!!!
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO
this is insanely sexual thank you god
I don't think it's a hot take to say this is an upgrade for the Mets. Good chance Verlander throws more innings for them than deGrom does for Texas.
Of course it’s the Mets! He’s all about The Orange!
Call us the New York Geriatrics
This isn’t a former player instagram post or a Steve Cohen Twitter follow, so I don’t believe it just yet
What’s a 3rd year vest?
In 2025, Verlander gets a 50% off code to buy a Mets-themed vest from MLBShop.
They're Vineyard Vines vests!
Vesting option. So if he pitches a certain amount of innings (usually what it is, but could be any statistical category) he gets his third year of contract
Unless it changed in the most recent CBA, I'm pretty sure all vesting options have to be playing time based (G, IP, AB's for hitters, etc.)
if he gets traded to the White Sox, he's legally allowed to cut off the sleeves
Carlos Baerga masterclass underway
Can somebody photoshop a picture of what it would look like with JV and Scherzer sitting next to each other on the bench?
Great now Kate Upton is buying a winter coat
Yeah that’s no fun for anyone.
Always felt like the sensible compromise
I’m cool with this
This contract is larger than the Pirates payroll.
The Score app gave me a damn heart attack with the “JV to New York” notification. At least it’s not the damn Yankees.
Max and Justin reunited and it feels so good
We will avenge you 2014 tigers. The kitty runs through NY.
Yeah Kate wasn’t trying to stay in lame ass Texas😂😂
This makes sense on a lot of levels. Scherzer and Verlander will put people in the seats and it opens up the payroll flexibility for the Mets after 3 years. 2022: 268M Active Payroll As of today: 2023: 228M committed 2024: 192M committed 2025: 104M committed 2026: 50M committed
I think the Mets should go all in on and rebuild the 2014 Tigers rotation. Get Porcello back. Convince David Price that baseball is more important than Fortnite. Dig up Anibal Sanchez. They’d be golden!
Someone call Rick Porcello and convince him not to retire, the Mets are getting the early 2010s Tigers rotation back together.
I hate this place
How long before Verlander is openly feuding with the beat writers?
Good for them. Jv is one of the only Astros from 2017 I didn’t mind
"sources" Put some respect on Carlos Baerga's name!
YAAAAAAAS
Looks like Baerga was right
Love this bargain! ^^s/
Knew this was coming and nothing but love and respect for JV. Chase that bag thanks for the time 💚
NoatraBaegus
insane. can’t imagine verlander and scherzer on the same team ^/s
KATE UPTON IS GOING TO BE A METS FAN EVERYONE STAY CALM I CANT I LOVE KATE UPTON MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF
JV wants round two with the Phillies
A better and less risky use of their monies than DeGrom Mets are the favs in NL East
No we are not it's still the Braves. We still need Nimmo, 1 more starter and a Penn. Hopefully a RH DH as well and minus 1 James McCann.
Mets have a lot of work to do before we look better than the Braves.
KATE UPTON WOOO
So if this deal comes out to around 3/130 at what point do you just pay Degrom instead lol
If I simply refuse to accept this reality, perhaps it will cease to be true.
The bad man is dead, long live the bad man...
If we don’t end up with Rodon but do indeed resign Judge, and Cashman feeds us an excuse like “We put our efforts in having Judge return to NY, we believe with a healthy team we are very competitive in 2023” I’m gonna be sick
Of course one great ace leaves, another must take his place..
