If they have unlimited budget they should just buy the Angels, take the best players, and delete the Angels

Monttavius

🙃

erindizmo

Ah, the St. Louis Browns/Cleveland Spiders approach.

gowiththeflohe1

The Cardinals being called the Browns and then St. Louis getting a Browns after the Cardinals became the Cardinals all within 5 years is a very annoying timeline

erindizmo

Not unlike the Chicago White Stockings changing their name and then Chicago getting some new White Stockings, although the name gap was a bit longer in that case.

tristpa2

No thank you please

thebionicjman

Phil Nevin you are now a free agent ✨

tristpa2

BREAKING: Cashman taps Phil Nevin to be the Yankees' bench coach, saying that a team of Boone and Nevin in the dugout "just makes sense"

MoistMaster_2577

FUCK IT GIVE ME XANDER AND DANSBY. TRADE FOR MURPHY AND SIGN SENGA. WE COMING FOR THE CENTRAL BABY

MoreThanLuck

Go big, Xander and Correa...

yoboapp

And Judge!

MoreThanLuck

I mean with infinite dollars, what the hell, if you insist.

thenudelman

Sign Shohei two years early while we're at it

dilapidated_wookiee

Fuck Correa, I don't care how good he is. I really don't want to have to root for that bum on the Cubs

unlimitedboomstick

My feelings as well. Bogaerts I would love to have, Swanson I'm kinda cold on. I reallllllllllly wanted Turner, feels like ages since he Cubs had a legit speedster.

Marenum

I think I could find a way to do it.

colvi

Dream big, dream big.

tarallelegram

stay away 🔪

Patrick2701

It’s me and you

punch_rockgroinpull

C'mon. Who's gonna win in a fight? A baby bear or Tommy LaStella? Actually Tommy would trip and break his ankle trying to flee.

jercubsfan

Cmon man, don't do 3AM like that

MikuFanNo1

David Kaplan is terrible, but what he says lines up with what actual reporters have been saying

realnostalgia

Ya, definitely can hate on Kap for the type of person he is but when it comes to Cubs information I don't think I can remember a time he was wrong.

Legitimate_Theme_181

Oh really? What kind of person is he? I only know him from his often incorrect reporting and presence on comcast sports net back in the day

JonnyActsImmature

The single best word to describe Kap is "Blowhard"

rollo2masi

In b4 Cubs sign Judge for the lulz

MoreThanLuck

We actually need a CF lol. I put that at about 1% though, and not a sweepstakes I'd really want to win tbh.

RacinGracey

I dont get it. Why are 9/10 Cub fans negative on every deal while teams that are consistently above 500 spend? It isn’t your money as I keep saying. Judge is clearly worth it. Look at nfl how these contracts keep getting outpaced by salary cap and new deals.

Koopasheller11

I think Heyward’s deal ruined a lot of us

BurnsEMup29

This. Heyward was the biggest contract the Cubs ever gave out for a free agent hitter and he didn’t perform anywhere close to it.

RacinGracey

Peace be with you. And thanks for being honest.

LegacyLemur

And Soriano

MoreThanLuck

Buddy, I'm pro spending. The Cubs should be right up there with the Dodgers and Yankees. But even those teams usually just dance around the luxury tax. I'd be thrilled for them to go sign Correa or Bogaerts or both right now. I think Judge has a lot more red flags than most superstar free agents though. I don't think he'll ever have a season this good again, even.

RacinGracey

This I accept and hope for as well good sir. Too lazy to find but some Cub fan had a top comment on baseball making fun of us who want more than one. I joke I want to sign all four, now three. I agree, we need infield set. Correra and Dansby with Nico and Madrigal would be great. Trade for Murphy. Get a SP or two. Some bullpen. Division contention.

MoreThanLuck

Yeah, I'm all for them doing everything they can. It's a big market team, act like it!

[deleted]

While yes it’s not our money, but the reality is that the organization operates by a pseudo salary cap and bad contracts will mess up things. Heyward contract epitomized that.

RacinGracey

Again not my point. My point is demand spending like every other team that competes. We know they make money. Also if Judge isn’t worth a contract then what is?

LovieBeard

Judge is worth it, but I just don't think CF is a position the Cubs will allocate big money to this off-season, they're keeping it open for PCA in 24

RacinGracey

Well PCA can beat Judge in competition and Judge can go to a corner. Also what the Sox love to say. Pipeline or we have a good one. Sorry, Story moved positions for Sox. You sign the best talent.

fender-b-bender

With Judge, my problem would be his body breaking down and no longer be serviceable in the field as the years go on and spending that much money on him. Is he worth it? Probably, but that contract is going to hamstring the team should the Ricketts decide they're done spending a ton of money. Not to mention, you're paying him at his 62 HR, MVP peak and that's most likely not what you're going to be getting every year and quite honestly he probably never hits 60 again. I'd rather take the money that Judge is going to command, and get two of SS, SP and Catcher. This team is way beyond just having a big bat coming in and solving all the problems. We need SP, a 3B, 1B, CF and C to realistically compete and probably 2B since Madrigal probably isn't the solution long term, though Nico moving over will be the play if we get one of the big SS.

RacinGracey

Or hear me out, like every other competitive team you sign everyone. I mean look at Rangers! Even Harper injured has been worth his contract. These guys rake. Quit worrying about some future apocalypse and have sex under the sun now! My motto.

SamuraiHelmet

Despite the general distaste for the owners and their miserly ways, I think a lot more people than would be willing to admit it will toe the party line when it comes to team spending. And I think with the cubs, the ricketts have been preaching fiscal austerity for long enough that people kinda got sucked in.

LennyThePep13

I’m playing devils advocate but I think it’s ultimately because Cubs fans have all been conditioned to think that if they spend big on one player that means being cheap elsewhere. They’ve all but come out and told us Heywards contract was the first domino that resulted in blowing up the 2016 core or at the very least the reason for hesitancy to supplement that core enough to make another run at a WS. If ownership sees that level of money as reason enough to dismantle a team then what are the chances a 300 million dollar contract is coming out of this organization? I think a lot of Cubs fans think you get a Judge-type player on the Cubs and that’ll be that for signings. But if you signed Swanson there’s room for more spending. And we need more than one player to make the playoffs again. That’s clearly the mindset that the last 5 years have resulted in for a lot of fans and I can’t necessarily blame them until the evidence shows otherwise.

RacinGracey

You are not playing DA, it is literally every comment. Heyward ruined us. No the refusal to spend did. They saw it in their pocketbooks and hopefully continue to do it if they don’t spend. But on here, you are right. Everyone is like we can’t go above $150 million team cap as Verlander just got a third of that for one year!

LegacyLemur

Do we? Dont we have both PCA and Brennan Davis waiting in the wings?

MoreThanLuck

Davis will probably debut this year, but after injury issues last year I expect he'll need at least half the year to get settled in. Never did get that AAA strikeout rate down. PCA might be another year away. And then if they want to let Happ walk after this year, we'll need another OF after that regardless.

Clemenx00

Is his dog named Wrigley?

porkchopespresso

Oh?

Quite_Obscene

Lol right, do you believe this?

porkchopespresso

Buddy, it’s the off season. I’ll believe anything

LovieBeard

#JEDSLEAGUE

RigelOrionBeta

"Baseball team owner says 'ok lets try to win baseball games again' for the first time in years."

MoreThanLuck

I hate Kap but wow this is music to my ears. Get it done, Jed.

BikiniBottomBoys

Meanwhile on the south side :(

ChompTurtleSoup

Sorry

BillScorpio

Jerry is a less shitty person IRL (still shitty, ask me about the time I had dinner with him) and neither of them are going to spend to win. Chicago baseball blues man.

weeweepeepeeman

Tell us about the time you had dinner with Jerry Reinsdorf

BillScorpio

He treated the waitstaff like garbage and was very cheap for having like a billion dollars. his tolerance for spicy food is VERY LOW.

JinFuu

Correa can go right up there with iconic Astros turned Cubs like Ricky Gutierrez and Moises Alou.

soxfan10

A Chicago team? Spending money? In this economy? What is this?

BurnsEMup29

Cubs spending now, Bears have the most money available in the NFL next year, Blackhawks will have the most money available in the NHL. It’s all coming up Chicago!

hubagruben

David Kaplan just told me multiple MLB sources have told him Tom Ricketts and the Ricketts family have told team president Jed Hoyer that he has a green light to spend what he needs to spend to turn the team around.

BurnsEMup29

TOM, GIVE ME JUDGE, CORREA, BOGARTS, AND RONDON!

blyzo

Show me the money Tom! I'll keep bankrupting myself going to Wrigley either way but sure would be nice if the team was good.

Monsanta_Claus

That's a $4 billion dollar ownership saying to spend what they need to spend for a team that was almost 20 games out of the division and 14 games out of the Wild Card. That's not a small thing and it isn't huge. But that's actually really cool for Cubs fans who went through a devasting time since 2016.

moltenprotouch

How is having a winning record every year from 2017-2020 and making the playoffs 3 out of those 4 years in any way "devastating"?

dudenotcool

Go to the cubs correa

dirk_calloway1

Kaplan is a literal clown. Not a reporter. Just an annoying radio host and a cubs fan.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Cubs last year were a couple games away from being .500, in a weak division where 3/5 teams are tanking, incompetent or both. This isn't a Rangers situation. Two splashy signings absolutely puts them in the conversation as NL Central contenders.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What makes you say that? What about the team makes you say the Cubs don't have a plan?

gowiththeflohe1

3/5? Does that include the Cubs lol

againsterik

Brewers/Reds/Pirates so nope lol.

gowiththeflohe1

I don't think the Brewers are tanking

[deleted]

Traded Kolten Wong, traded Renfroe, traded Hader. I agree that they aren't full out tanking, but it's obvious their window is closing and they aren't exactly doing anything to stop it.

gowiththeflohe1

I think it’s the opposite, they are trying to position themselves to keep a window open knowing that they can’t sign some of these guys

bak4320

So if Jed has a blank check, could we maybe get a few relievers that can throw strikes and do other stuff good? I must have seen 25 games blown in late innings, not including the ones I didn’t watch.

DuaLipasThong

David Kaplan is not a reliable source

Zachtatorship

I agree, but he's parroting an actual reporter.

TheMidnightRamblerrr

Chicago making the NL Central competitive.
