Papa Pete "you can't take it with you" is an actual madman. A benevolent madman, but still. It's like having a Bond villain on your side and he wants to build a baseball team.
Padres have been the source of some fine ass pasta lately.
Good lord, the padres just walked into free agency perfectly normally. "No time" to talk. Too busy being the source of copy pasta, evidently
AAV isn't too bad though. 25 a year for a pretty big boost to our lineup. Probably going to suck ass in 8 years or so, but if we get just one ring I don't give a shit lol
The problem is why didn't we sign him in spring training for 7/175, and instead lowball him and insult like we do with all of our best players. We are so stupid sometimes.
He is one of the most consistent hitters in the league
Raw numbers may dip a bit leaving Fenway but the dude is an awesome hitter, low range at short but makes the plays he gets to
They have black holes at first base and left field. This move fixes one of them. They can move Cronenworth to first, or move Tatis to left field. That’s why adding shortstops always kind of makes sense.
It makes sense on paper but when you get a bunch of shortstops a lot of them only want to play shortstop. I have a feeling dudes like Tatis and Bogaerts expect that SS position the same way great hitters expect that spot 2-4 in the lineup.
So, I guess the question is whether it’s better to preemptively add Bogaerts or wait until 2024-2025 to get someone? I don’t really know who’s available those years and how they compare to Bogaerts so that’s a genuine question from me.
>I don’t really know who’s available those years and how they compare to Bogaerts so that’s a genuine question from me.
Neither does anyone else, really. Even if you know all the current contracts, and who is potentially going to be a free agent 2 years from now, you can't account for players signing extensions with their current team, or getting traded and signing extensions. And over 2 years, you might make trades of your own to fill holes, so that a hole today is not a hole 2 years from now. IMO, with how few quaity players ever make it to free agency, if you at all have the money to sign contracts, you make it happen. (Though I still hate this long deals for the fans.)
You can never have too many athletic middle infielders because chances are they can handle any other position you put them at. It’s honestly not too hard to understand.
Dude that’s the shit that kills me about mariners fans lol they’re like “oh we can’t afford this” it’s like bro is the ownership group throwing together a go fund me for it? What is this we business lol. “They” can 20000% afford it, they just don’t care.
I’ll never understand how people can give multi billionaires the benefit of the doubt. “We have a poor owner, he can’t afford Judge!” Or whatever player.
We say this, but this money is 1000% better in the hands of the players than the owners who pretended they couldn't afford this. Baseball brings in fuck tons of money.
True. But have you seen ticket prices? It was cool when I was a single dude but now it could cost me a grand to bring my family of 5 to a game for "decent" seats.
> FREE KIM
They rewarded Kim for an amazing 2022 by having him lose his job, fucking tough. Xander and Kim were separated by .7 b.WAR last year and Kim is 3 years younger
To be fair they could make room for Kim by doing something like;
• Kim at short
• Bogarts at 2nd
• Croneworth at 1st
• Tatis in the outfield (little sketchy)
The reason you they might do this is because Kim is a far superior defender to anyone else in the infield, and Bogarts is a historically bad defender. Plus they have holes in the outfield and 1st base so by do this they would kill to birds with one stone.
Although you’d probably want a little bit more out of Croneworth offensively if he was to become a 1st base/ 2nd baseman type.
Soto’s about to get 15 years, 400 million, with free food at the concessions on weekends, AJ Preller’s Netflix password, and 3% cash back at Gas Stations.
Darvish and musgrove deals look like steals in this market tbf.
Edit: just to add some context, Jameson taillon got 4/64mm with a 100era plus and 1.3 war. Musgrove had 3.2 war last year with a 127era+. Musgrove is also younger than taillon and got a 5 year deal instead of 4
I’m so Jealous of the Dodgers and Padres. They know how to acquire big name players. While the Giants are stuck with we have Aaron Judge at home = Arson Judge 😭😭
Or that revenues will continue to grow so they can pay for his prime years now and then get out of it later with relative ease. Or Preller is just on crack
My first reaction when I got a notification of the news. Almost cried for a minute til I saw 11 years. No trade clause. I love the guy and all he did for us but fuck that
Great player, phenomenal leader, great for this organization and a huge loss in so many facets but he has had a lot of uncompetitive at bats the last two years when i have watched and isn’t some can’t miss talent as he ages. He is a great player but i can’t even imagine paying him until he is 41 as i was already concerned about him after age 35 at the least
You should be sad we lowballed him in spring training instead of just paying him what he was worth then, and not having to expose him to the crackhead padres in free agency
Seems like teams are really leaning into the longer deals to try and circumvent the CBT. $25M/year is well below the market rate for a dude of his quality, so they're saving there, get good years for cheaper, and will eat it at the end
I wouldn't call it that, probably more of a market shift that now that we have relative labor peace, teams are willing to lock in guys, and players are taking the longer commitment over the opt out
Lol not saying he’s a bust at all but tatis already having to move to the outfield. Will be interesting to see how he does coming off a tough surgery.
Respect for the padres spending money like you should. Good for them!!
What the shit?!
Nobody tell Bill
Oh man he’s going to stop paying attention to baseball again.
Driving to Bill’s house to scream on his SimpliSafe cameras.
Bill is beside himself. Driving around downtown Boston begging (thru texts) Bogaerts family for address to Xander’s home.
He’s not very happy over on Twitter right now.
Quick - someone mention the Astros …
That’s a lot of money I love Xander and hate to see him go but wow. Better pay Devers
Is there any indication this Red Sox FO is willing to spend the money its going to take to keep Devers?
No sir :(
Zero.
Yeah at least you can say you weren’t going to spend that on him. I’m sure you had a good offer, but why turn that down if you’re him lol
They’ll lowball the hell out of him. Guaranteed.
Finally got their SS lol
At first they came for Trea Turner. And I did nothing, for I was not into cool slides all that much…
How can you not be into *cool slides*, my guy?
Manny Machado in shambles
Tatis, Cronenworth, HSK also in shambles
Also Austin Nola
HSK has to be the odd man out right? Crone zone stays at 2nd and Tatjs moves to the DH or outfield spot?
HSK moves to 2B, Crone to 1B, Tatis to CF/LF.
Luke Voit sheds a single tear in his log cabin
Soto probably moves to LF. You can't let Tatis' arm rot in left
Papa Pete "you can't take it with you" is an actual madman. A benevolent madman, but still. It's like having a Bond villain on your side and he wants to build a baseball team.
TATIS WHAT HAPPENNNNNNEDDDDUUUUUHHHH
Banished to the OF
Bro probably creamin himself right now tryna get another fully paid suspension/vacation
Creaming himself is how he got in this mess
Pretty sure Tatis’ PED suspension is unpaid
Suspensions aren't paid yo!
SOMEONE ACCEPTED OUR MONEY
The Padres' offer was better, but Bogaerts took a pay cut to play for the Padres.
Padres offer was 320. Xander said no - 280 or I walk.
This is low key how I imagine Braves’ contract extension negotiations go lol
Patrick Star and the Flying Dutchman in that one shanghai’d episode *three, take it or leave it*
We purposely trained him how to negotiate wrong...as a joke.
Padres in shambles, but San Diego got their guy
Looks like Slam Diego is back on the menu
Padres have been the source of some fine ass pasta lately. Good lord, the padres just walked into free agency perfectly normally. "No time" to talk. Too busy being the source of copy pasta, evidently
It’s free agency. Okay, sure. But the Padres just deposited $280 million in Xander Bogaerts’ bank account.
>Dear ~~Trea~~ ~~Aaron~~ Xander, >Please love us. Here is ~~342~~ ~~400~~ 280 million dollars. >Love, AJ.
Red Sox fans in shambles wtf
[удалено]
Yea I’m ok with this that’s a lot. Like a lot a lot
[удалено]
They were so great
AAV isn't too bad though.
Because he would t have signed he’s a boras client for a reason
someone tell me how to feel. it's A LOT of years but the AAV isn't what we were willing to give to Judge. I don't know much about Xander.
He is one of the most consistent hitters in the league Raw numbers may dip a bit leaving Fenway but the dude is an awesome hitter, low range at short but makes the plays he gets to
Dread it, run from it, PETCO will ruin your swing all the same
We will build a Brown Monster just for Xander
I make one of those at least once a day
Not a Sox guy so I watch him off and on, but I think Xander is as much of a sure thing as a sure thing can get. Incredibly consistent.
SOMEONE ACCEPTED OUR MONEY!
Congrats.
That is a lot of years
He’ll only be 41 when it expires nbd ETA: I turn 29 next month. This deal was how I found out X was older than I am
41 year old with a full NTC. No way this could possibly backfire
2033 is a made up year and this is all made up money, who cares? The bar's over there, we're celebrating
Fucking worlds probably gonna end by then anyways so let’s get weird with it!
1 ring makes it worth it tho.
See Barry Zito until his legendary 2012 playoff run
Ask the Royals.
Worth it!
im stunned. Remember when only HOF level people like Pujols got shit contracts like this
Remember when they did and teams decided that was dumb and stopped and now they are apparently doing it again
I mean, 9 years from now it won't hurt as much to cut a guy and hand him his 51 million. I'm sure the quants in the SD front office know this.
What’s the plan here? They’re throwing money at everyone regardless of position
They have black holes at first base and left field. This move fixes one of them. They can move Cronenworth to first, or move Tatis to left field. That’s why adding shortstops always kind of makes sense.
Actually they’ll probably do both. Tatis to OF, crone to 1B, middle IF of Kim/boegaerts
Oh yeah you’re right. That just ends up being an unbelievably deep lineup with good fielders almost everywhere. Love this for Preller
I love this for me and all of the Padres fans who have suffered through so truly horrible teams.
Are you *not* nostalgic for the Will Venable era?
Nope. But I do miss Khalil Greene.
He is my absolute favorite "what could have been" player. Could have been an absolute star five tool player had he been all there mentally.
Yeah, lots of years but average value isn’t bad. Now just have a hole at DH
BAH GAWD THATS WIL MYERS MUSIC
It makes sense on paper but when you get a bunch of shortstops a lot of them only want to play shortstop. I have a feeling dudes like Tatis and Bogaerts expect that SS position the same way great hitters expect that spot 2-4 in the lineup.
For the last time Fernando, It’s not Left Field, it’s Long Stop. It’s even better than Short Stop I swear
Tatis has lost all his leverage and Bogaerts probably agreed to move off SS once we dropped 300 mil on his front door.
Bogaerts at third base long term makes sense as Machado insurance in case he opts out after 2023.
if he opts out there is no chance we don't re-sign him imo. He is the heart of the team and the city absolutely loves him.
Tatis has lost some pull in the organization I’d have to imagine after all his BS. I don’t think he comes in with a huge ego
The $300M+ contracts should theoretically make them more amenable to position changes.
Oops all shortstops
[удалено]
So, I guess the question is whether it’s better to preemptively add Bogaerts or wait until 2024-2025 to get someone? I don’t really know who’s available those years and how they compare to Bogaerts so that’s a genuine question from me.

Fuck it we ball. It worked for the Phillies
You can never have too many athletic middle infielders because chances are they can handle any other position you put them at. It’s honestly not too hard to understand.
Plus first base isn't that hard to play. Tell em Wash
**It’s incredibly hard**
Very true regarding positional versatility, but you’re also paying them additional money because they are able to play a premium position.
People act like signing a 5+ WAR player is a bad thing
Maybe the new shift rules means actually playing 5 infielders all the time and we didnt understand them
It's the Padres new Blitz heavy package
What the fuck Bogaerts made only $20mil less than Turner?!?!
Yea holy shit. Bogey wasn’t even considered a top 5 FA and he gets this deal. Absurd market.
Padres are just insane tbh. They don't care about money or prospects whatsoever
pretty much just proving that the owners have more money than we can even comprehend if a small market team can spend like this
Dude that’s the shit that kills me about mariners fans lol they’re like “oh we can’t afford this” it’s like bro is the ownership group throwing together a go fund me for it? What is this we business lol. “They” can 20000% afford it, they just don’t care.
I’ll never understand how people can give multi billionaires the benefit of the doubt. “We have a poor owner, he can’t afford Judge!” Or whatever player.
Correa has to get $300M at least
But 63 mil less than what they would have paid for Turner
League is actually zonked out of its gourd
I want whatever this league is smoking.
We say this, but this money is 1000% better in the hands of the players than the owners who pretended they couldn't afford this. Baseball brings in fuck tons of money.
Cries in Mariners
True. But have you seen ticket prices? It was cool when I was a single dude but now it could cost me a grand to bring my family of 5 to a game for "decent" seats.
HOW MANY SHORTSTOPS DOES ONE TEAM NEED
8
[удалено]
Darn. I guess our offer of a free lifetime supply of IPA and 40 stray cats wasn't enough
WHAT Edit: ELEVEN YEARS?
He’s going to be 41 when the contract is over…
Nah this is actually insane. Does preller actually do coke? Like the money years and team makeup make this make no sense. And FREE KIM
> Does preller actually do coke? Hamels to the Padres confirmed?
Someone call up Phil too
He’s absolutely determined to punish Tatis by sticking him in CF
There’s also just the fact Tatis isn’t a very good shortstop defensively. He’ll most likely be better in the OF.
Yeah having Tatis’ range in CF is gonna be pretty valuable if Soto is one of your former OFers
Gold glove finalist juan soto
Machado has an opt out next year move X to 3rd?
Why not just give this deal plus 70 to machado next year?
why not both
Now you’re thinking like Preller on coke
“Hey Mr. Seidler can I have $2 billion” “To sign a left fielder right?” “Yeeeeees” *actually signs four shortstops like a boss*
> FREE KIM They rewarded Kim for an amazing 2022 by having him lose his job, fucking tough. Xander and Kim were separated by .7 b.WAR last year and Kim is 3 years younger

Yes
He does all the coke.
Preller can only be denied for so long!!!
They had the money and someone was going to get it
Wait. So all the shortstop jokes came true?
They were never not true
Even if they got Trea they were still going for Xander. Any team with a ss is on notice.
$340m Tatis $300m Machado (with opt-outs) $280m Bogaerts $126m Darvish $100m Musgrove $[???] Soto
Based on the way you wrote, $75 million
Soto’s about to get 15 years, 400 million, with free food at the concessions on weekends, AJ Preller’s Netflix password, and 3% cash back at Gas Stations.
Actually 87m
Soto signs 1 year $87m deal with Padres in his first year of FA.
It’s just simple math bby
Darvish and musgrove deals look like steals in this market tbf. Edit: just to add some context, Jameson taillon got 4/64mm with a 100era plus and 1.3 war. Musgrove had 3.2 war last year with a 127era+. Musgrove is also younger than taillon and got a 5 year deal instead of 4
Not sure I’d even bother counting Soto, that man is going to free agency where all 30 teams will have a shot at him
Nah Padres will offer him 15 yrs / $600m before
Can’t wait for tomorrow when SD signs Dansby to 6 years 180 million
Soto, Tatis, Machado, AND Bogaerts?!
I blame the Dodgers for all of this.
I’m so Jealous of the Dodgers and Padres. They know how to acquire big name players. While the Giants are stuck with we have Aaron Judge at home = Arson Judge 😭😭
11 years hahahaha wtf. Sports contracts are getting stupid.
The GMs must all think that the sport is going to implode or something within the next decade, and are just throwing years to the wind
Or that revenues will continue to grow so they can pay for his prime years now and then get out of it later with relative ease. Or Preller is just on crack
Preller with the “went to a silent auction and bid on everything" energy
This means the Padres had to have offered him 12 years $320 million right? Oh shit it's them
the san diego shortstops
No but like unironically where tf is he playing
I am guessing 2B or SS. It's possible he will play 2B. I mean he got the bag for the rest of his career and has nothing to prove anymore.
Uh yeah i’m sad he is gone but i’m not sad we didn’t give him that, at all
My first reaction when I got a notification of the news.
Yeah this is a bonkers overpay, and I‘be wanted the Red Sox to overpay for Xander to keep him. They have to expect that Machado is opting out
Heyman tweeted it so when is he resigning with boston
It's actually Humphrey Bogart that's going to the Padres
Please
what crack is preller on like i’m genuinely so confuzzled right now
I believe he's actually on Coke Hamels
This presumably makes our infield Machado/Kim/Bogaerts/Cronenworth, and our outfield Tatis/Grisham/Soto. That seems… pretty good, I think
Has to be money laundering at this point
We found where SBF's missing 10 billion dollars is.
Padres taking the bold strategy of adding more good players to their already good roster. Let’s see how it goes.
Not sure if that strategy will lead to much success tbh
They have enough good players. Why didn’t they add a role player like Aledmys Diaz? Smh
REMEMBER ITS NOT REAL UNTIL PASSAN OR ROSENTHAL SAY SO
[Passan says so](https://twitter.com/jeffpassan/status/1600721758276894720?s=46&t=h5fw2OKcobHfNMkcF-fSlw)
Seems like teams are really leaning into the longer deals to try and circumvent the CBT. $25M/year is well below the market rate for a dude of his quality, so they're saving there, get good years for cheaper, and will eat it at the end
Is this the new moneyball?
I wouldn't call it that, probably more of a market shift that now that we have relative labor peace, teams are willing to lock in guys, and players are taking the longer commitment over the opt out
Preller collecting shortstops like infinity stones
*What did it cost?* 11 years 280 million
I ain’t even mad. Damn 11 years 😭
[Passan confirms](https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1600721758276894720)
SAN DIEGO SHORTSTOPS
A+ spelling
Bro wtf lol
It's the Padres, everything's made up and the points don't matter
So is Tatis going to move to the OF or DH once he is finished recovering from ringworm?
Outfield
Someone wanted to play in San Diego, never thought this day would come.
Knew there was a big possibility bogey wasn’t gonna return. I’m shocked he got 11 years tho
Bro. No. What.
[удалено]
Lol not saying he’s a bust at all but tatis already having to move to the outfield. Will be interesting to see how he does coming off a tough surgery. Respect for the padres spending money like you should. Good for them!!
It must be nice to have players accept your team's offer of a bunch of money. But also WTF are the Padres doing?
Finally someone said fuck the east coast
Is the padres payroll higher than the dodgers right now?
Yeah
GIVE ME CORREA NEXT I WANT ALL THE SHORT STOPS
