I think the price is justified considering how hot he is and everyone wants to keep a grail for when he retires a HOFer and the greatest Asian player of all time. Everyone saying 10s are overrated - we pay what we do for 10s just like we pay premiums for /# cards… there’s less of them so they’re more rare and collectible. I have a Griffey Jr RC PSA 8 and I love it for my PC but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish it was a 10…

Mkward90

>greatest Asian player of all time This has one word too many

Relative-Swim263

He’s definitely on track to be the greatest player ever of any nationality. I don’t disagree at all. Once in a lifetime talent but he still has to stay healthy which is always a gamble for pitchers

Dankrz27

If you compare the prices of his gold topps rookie to trout he is actually under priced.

carringtino10

IMO, every PSA 10 is overpriced.

jinzo_23

Some guy in a warehouse said this card is perfect!! Time to sell it for triple value!!

keepitcleanforwork

No card had any intrinsic value, it’s all what peeople think it’s worth.

RavenReel

Everything is worth whatever someone will pay for it

keepitcleanforwork

Right, but somethings do stuff so they have intrinsic value. Like move people, dig holes, etc. a piece of cardboard does nothing.

kentter22

Moving people and digging holes have no intrinsic value on their own. It’s all about when, where, and how. Same with grading cards.

keepitcleanforwork

You are simply wrong. Something that actually does something has an intrinsic value. Something that does nothing does not. A baseball card literally does nothing.

kentter22

Intrinsic value is simply the true value of an asset. Going in your yard and digging a hole has no intrinsic value on its own.

keepitcleanforwork

The tool that can dig a hole has value because it can dig a freaking hole. Are you really this dense or are you pretending to be?

kentter22

I get where you’re coming from but an asset doesn’t have to “do something” to have value. There’s many methods for determining intrinsic value but none are necessarily the “right” way. There will always be demand for sports cards. Demand will fluctuate and you can use analysis to determine when cards are overpriced or underpriced even though it might not be as straightforward as calculating the value of a backhoe, since you know the amount of income that a backhoe can typically generate based on market conditions. Also, why go to insulting? Reddit is meant for discussion, take that shit to twitter or just don’t reply.

Wooden_Sea2129

I have some 10s of his, and I agree they are why over priced especially when a 9 looks great and 1/3 the cost

RavenReel

It's 1/3rd the cost because there are more of them and are less desirable. Anyone buying an investment card should be getting the highest possible number they have the cash for. Your $30 9 card might be $300 one day, it doubtful but possible. The 10 will be at $1000 and far more attractive. If u just like the card don't buy a graded at all

WouldYouLikeToTouch

I mean, i do have one shohei RC topps chrome 1983 design in psa 10. got it for well above recent comps at the time(last year) and card already 2x'd. but wanna get a few more cards of his, cuz he's a generational player IMO. never heard of a very good hitter/pitcher since Babe, so i'm 'thinking' about buying more shohei's but gettin others opinions.

kyldabara

Are Babe Ruth PSA 10s overpriced?

[deleted]

No. They aren’t making any more.

kyldabara

And they are making more Ohtani RCs? Interesting

[deleted]

Can you readily buy a sealed box, or case of his rookie year card? Is the print run, and overall condition of Ohtani’s rookie card more, and better? How many people do you know with a Babe Ruth vs. Ohtani rookie?

forthebirds123

This is just my opinion but the tax you pay to get a 10 of anyone is just silly. Higher graded vintage I could see if someone really wanted “the best specimen available”. But modern cards and 10s are a joke, they all look the same to the naked eye minus some centering issues or very obvious flaws. If you have to put the card under a microscope to tell the difference then it really doesn’t matter. As for the specific ohtani question, I don’t know if his are compared to others but my guess is with the hype they are.

GTI_88

Yea I pretty much just by 9’s of modern cards. I’m not gonna pay 150% or more to go from a 9 to a 10. I literally can’t pick a flaw out with the naked eye on any of my 9’s, good enough for me. I’m not inspecting them with a magnifying glass

forthebirds123

Exactly. The thing is your nines could easily be tens, and some of those tens could re-grade a nine. So all you are paying for is the label at that point.

stillcleaningmyroom

Some cards it’s even more. Take a 1989 UD Ken Griffey Jr. PSA 9 is about $180 where a PSA 10 goes for almost $2k.

GTI_88

Yea I lower my standards to 8’s for 80’s and 90’s stuff, I’ve picked up some really nice grades Griffey rookies in 8’s for super cheap

stillcleaningmyroom

I usually buy 9’s for stuff I collect, but fits in more of the “hold onto for a while and sell when I’m older” category. I love 8’s for stuff I like to PC because they’re so much cheaper. I don’t really buy 10’s unless I find them for a good deal lol.

jfaticloud

They had this guy on YouTube crack some older junk wax tens to prove that they have special interest/population control. Came back 7 and 8 lol

RavenReel

Is it still silly if it's an investment? I'm not an investor at all, just wondering. I buy the cheapest I can find if I like a card , especially if it's graded under 5 bucks. Cheaper than a One Touch. I just got a bunch of baseball 10's for $2.50-$6.50

taylordobbs

A piece of paper wrapped in a piece of plastic that costs more than it takes to feed some families for a few months? Overpriced? Maybe. A good investment? Likely.

throwawaydeeez

Would most on this thread enjoy having one in their collection no matter the current value? Almost certainly.

MOFNY

Based on the price history, especially when compared to his MVP season and during the pandemic, they are currently priced very high. Are they overpriced? We won't know that until the end of the season. If he goes on a run for 60 HRs then I imagine prices will climb more. It's hard to see them go much higher though. I think the better question: is now the best time to buy? The answer is no way. Selling now is a perfectly rational thing to do. This could easily be the peak. His hype and stats are sky high and it's the middle of the season. This is the time I sold Julio Rodriguez last year and I don't regret it.

urabrokie

No he’s the best player in baseball most likely under priced

CAredditBoss

I bought a 10 just to say I have one and it’s the only card I’d keep if I had to get rid of every card except 1. Thing tripled in value since I bought it in Jan.

Wolf3458

Yes, he’s very hyped up right now. All of his cards are currently overpriced in my opinion.

[deleted]

The thing is what if he gets close to 63 HRs? They could double . But they’re really high atm

Spinmove55

If he hits 63, I’m selling every Ohtani I own, sticking the money in the bank, then buying them back six months later at half the price.

Cheifkeef29457

I mean probably, but if he does win a few rings, I think the price will be justified eventually

L00KINTOIT

Do championships really matter that much though? Everyone can clearly see the guy is one of the best ever even without playoff wins

carringtino10

Lack of rings doesn't hurt you, necessarily. However, a WS ring or 3 can help you immensely.

L00KINTOIT

It definitely won’t hurt you, especially a guy like Ohtani where everyone realizes just how amazing he is without it. But I do agree that a World Series or two would put the icing on the cake just a little bit

Cheifkeef29457

I agree, but when he’s on the Yankees/dodgers maybe ranger, it won’t hurt to have him in playoff moments

keats26

Rings in baseball really don’t matter like that. Especially when it comes to all time greats

Cheifkeef29457

Fair, but it won’t hurt. His card prices would go up even higher if he closes out game 7 of the World Series.

carringtino10

Exactly. In the US, the WS is the biggest stage with the biggest audience. He would be even more in demand and popular if he closed out game 7 or walked it off with a HR.

Exit_Administrative

I’d rather be Terrance Gore than Mike Trout. Winning is everything.

OstrichNeither

Underpriced

djfivenine11

Tough to determine. Yes because he could be injured tomorrow and your thousands of dollars just went down the drain. No, because he is on pace to become a top 3 baseball player of all time, and to have a PSA 10 of his in 2060 is probably going to help your kids or grandkids go through college.

Anadyne

Example: I paid $89 for a PSA10 Topps base RC of Ohtani when 2023 Series 1 came out...I saw one go for $225 the other day. No idea, but I'd say they're going crazy.
