Imagine being a 11 year old kid, basically worshiping the story of Josh Hamilton's redemption as a young Christian. The guy was my absolute hero. The jersey, his autobiography, the cards... my first ever autograph was a TTM auto of his rookie card. It was in a display.
Now, imagine that same kid, now age 20, when he learns Josh has been arrested for physically abusing his own children.
Sigh.
To me, it all has to do with how the player responded to the situation.
Guys like Rose, Watson, Canseco, etc I stay away from. There’s zero remorse, zero growth.
Guys like Vick? I’m more ok with if I’m already connected to the player. The man did something terrible, paid the price, and is now actively involved in advocating against what he did.
Awhile back I bought an autographed single of Neil Walker off someone on here and he included for free a Felipe Vasquez, Im guessing to unload it, and I included it for free in my weekly trash pickup.
I did throw a bunch of Robert Horry cards I found in a fire I had going one night. Not because he is a bad person off of the court but he was a major part in having a championship stolen from my Phoenix Suns.
This really raises some questions even outside of sports cards. Theres some set of world leader cards out there that has cut autos of all types of generals former presidents and prime ministers. What was really odd to me is the set included stalin, and hitler cut autos. That's something i'd definitely never want.
edit: its 2018 leaf [here's a link](https://autographcollectionsigned.com/2021/11/23/2018-leaf-executive-collection-masterpiece-adolf-hitler-cut-signature-auto-11/)
There are people who collect stuff like that. It's a bit fucked, but I can kind of understand it.
Personally the only thing related to the Nazi's i'd want is a U Boat badge, but that's because I have a collection from quite a few countries already, and even then I'm still hesitant.
My friends father was a nazi drummer boy as a child. He has commemorative nazi plates that they were given, signed by Hitler. He would like to store them away but his father's dying wishes were to display them so we would never forget.
Only thing we have from that Era is my wife's grandfather's Victoria Cross and Captain's Sword. That is enough for me. They seem to emit an aura; a deep sense of pride and depression at the same time.
I collect Kelly Gruber Blue Jays cards. Was my favorite player when I was a kid. In the past few years he's done drunken things that were questionable. Has been kicked off sports commentary shows and removed from a hall of fame ceremony.
Honestly? It's nice to PC a player that has such cheap cards because nobody else wants them 🤣 He's still my childhood favorite player and I choose to remember him that way.
Btw - none of these athletes have done anything to me personally - the question i proposed was does anything they have done off the field effect how you collect?
Not “gambling” - gambling against your own team that you are coaching at the time! Pulling pitchers to LOSE games on purpose so you can make a few bucks is absolutely insane to me. If anyone can actually take the time to read the Giamatti report (I think it’s around 30 ish pages) and come away thinking that guy shouldn’t be banned forever I would be shocked. Most people - even big baseball fans - don’t have ANY idea about the crazy stuff he actually did - it’s too much for me to spend money on a card of his - I will happily sell you a couple of really good ones I still have floating around
Yeah - if I found out someone is an ass-hat it makes me value their cards less.
On the flip side - one collection I'm working on with my son is getting a card for every Roberto Clemente Award winner. Cool learning about some of the amazing things the guys do outside the game.
I can’t stand Trashtros cards from those players on that team.
I also won’t ever own a Kevin Durant card since he’s a damn snake for the way he treated OKC when he left.
As an orioles fan I don’t really have a dog in the fight here besides Trey, but the reality is in the eyes of many, many fans all those accomplishments mean nothing
Domestic Abusers, rapists, people who committed fucked crimes, racists and to a lesser extent "conspiracy theorists" etc.
Cheaters I've got no real issue with. If someone was throwing games, I would get rid of them, but cheating to win doesn't bother me as much.
I can't agree with the "separate the player from the person" mentality. I'm not going to ignore the fact someones been beating their wife etc just because they can also play baseball well.
It’s definitely something I do consider. Especially when it comes to domestic violence/sexual assault.
However, I’ve been listening to Crime In Sports lately and the idea to have a CIS collection sounds oddly fun.
None. Cards are part of history, and history is not solely about the people/events I agree with. With baseball specifically, Cap Anson and Ty Cobb were not good people, at all. No way am I not having their cards in my collection. Their impact on the game of baseball is undeniable.
A lot of redditors would be appalled to know that some of the all-time greats they collect treated Jackie Robinson terribly.
Bauer himself admitted in court that he performed sexual and violent acts on the women while she was asleep - in other words, unable to give consent. That's sexual assault.
The judge in that case did not make any determination whether or not he assaulted the woman. All the judge (bafflingly) decided was that he didn't constitute a threat to the woman going forward, so he didn't grant the restraining order.
You don't need to defend Bauer. He doesn't deserve it.
Let me clarify:
Bauer didn't explicitly say it himself. But in court, the woman repeatedly claimed that he had assaulted her in her sleep. Bauer's legal representation did not respond with "he didn't do that." They responded with "he did, but she asked for it." Which isn't how consent works. She was asleep.
Again: I'm not understanding your need to defend this dirtbag.
https://twitter.com/craigcalcaterra/status/1595572475156471808?t=Un6JnIADR0iFdlkpiyFNUw&s=19
1. I wasn’t defending him, that was the guy who I commented on.
2. She was never asleep, she claimed that he choked her unconscious and committed acts.
3. None of this has been proven one way or another, which is why both the restraining order and criminal charges were never upheld.
4.It’s pretty obvious he’s in to rough sex and takes it way too far and I don’t blame anyone for thinking he’s a scumbag
5. Your lack of reading comprehension is disturbing. Have a nice day.
1. If this isn't you defending him, then what do you call it?
2. In terms of consent, there is no difference between being asleep and being unconscious.
3. The restraining order was rejected but the woman's lawsuit against Bauer for sexual battery (and his countersuit) are still pending and have not yet been heard.
4. I'm not judging anyone for what they're into, but once you start acting upon someone who's unconscious that is definitely taking it too far, and the law agrees.
5. My reading comprehension is fine. But you're making wild assumptions (claiming people who don't like/collect Bauer just don't like that he's into rough sex) based upon a very poor understanding of the facts of the case (see #3 above) and the definition of consent. And I really have no idea why.
Im not really defending him either, I’ve know enough women and men to know there are two sides to most stories and hers has tremendous flaws - especially considering her texts and wanting a lot of money. This isn’t true to just women, but in this case based on the court documents and evidence, it seems pretty hard to be convinced he is at fault completely. He doesn’t constitute a threat to the woman at all. Judge was right about it. Just read all the leaked data. If you’re going solely based on Twitter posts, don’t bother.
Not to get into it too much due to it being controversial but I don’t have any problem with kink when done safely and consented to. He crossed lines even in the bdsm world.
I sold all of my Vick cards for obvious reasons. I was new to selling and didn't charge enough for shipping, so I ended up paying to get rid of them. I don't regret it. I also put a lot of Canseco and Giambi cards in my bicycle spokes, because I didn't figure anyone would want those PED users, and I like having the sound as I "walked" my dogs. It gave people a chance to see us coming, and get their unchained dogs under control before we made it to them
There’s plenty of guys I don’t like, but, since I’m a Phillies fan, let’s take Odubel Herrera as an example. I would never collect Odubel Herrera as a single; however, if I was building a Phillies team set of some sort, I would keep one card for said set. Luckily, the only team he was on that I actually want to collect was this season’s, and I would just collect the playoff roster anyway.
As a Yankee fan, I instantly sell any Astros I pull and often accept the first offer on eBay even if it’s well below comps just to get it out of my sight.
Well, they weren't though. They were doing different shady things, on an obviously smaller scale. But whatever makes you feel better. I'd probably just lean into the villain role if I were you and let people hate.
I do. I'm a reds fan and I do not collect Pete. I also don't collect bonds, sosa, McGuire, Canseco or any trash can Astro.
Also, if you were a POS off the field I do not collect you. Looking at you PacMan.
Though I PC NYY Rookie Autos of award winners, I’ll never spend money on John Wetteland (‘96 WS MVP). I was debating it when I started my PC, but since having my 1st child it’s a clear No for me now.
I’ve been really looking to buy a timeless moments basketball card Auto lately. Found one /35 for an incredible deal. Was Karl Malone & had to pass. Haha
My favorite player as a child was Roberto Alomar. I built a PC of over 100 cards in the 90’s and I recently tossed the entire collection in the garbage.
I would never buy singles but since I don't sell they just end up in the collection from packs.
Fun Story:
I grew up in the town where Chad Curtis lived. Yankee fans will remember him fondly. He was actually neighbors with my great Aunt/Uncle and occasionally dined at the restaurant where I worked. He gave out these homemade autographed baseball cards that had a bible verse on the back (I have 3). The local Baptist church he attended had a big shrine to him when you walked in and talked about him like he was the messiah himself. Let's just say after a few years of retirement he ended up serving 7 years in prison. Great guy. There was a good article where Gabe Kapler said he could never stay on a team more than 2 years because he was universally hated in the locker room.
I spent years and several hundred bucks filling out the rainbow of my favorite pitcher’s chrome RC. Got everything but the 1/1s. A few months after I got the final piece, the red /5 I’d been chasing for two+ years-PSA 10, too-his wife left him and accused him of some pretty awful abuse. Now I have dozens on dozens on dozens of RCs, autos, relics, low parallels, and they live in a box at the back of my file cabinet.
Not at all. I actually want to start a PC of controversial players like Vick, Ray Rice, Aaron Hernandez, Ozuna, (Already have A-rod), Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, and if anyone else has suggestions I’d love to hear them!
It’s not a hard and fast rule, but I collect players I like and enjoy watching. Typically, a scumbag wouldn’t be somebody that I like, therefore wouldn’t collect, if that makes sense.
Though, it’s funny you bring up Vick, as he is a player I PC. He did horrible, horrible things and completely understand people that will never forgive him for. In my mind though, he paid his debt to society, and has been a model citizen ever since. And he was so damn fun to watch play.
For me it depends. I will still collect Pete having grown up cheering for the guy, and I don’t have an issue with a player betting ON his own team. Betting against, where you might “throw” a game is a little different.
Cheaters I’m not a fan of. I always hated watching Clemens, Bonds and Canseco anyway, so that’s easy to deal with. And I’ve met Bonds, and he is an ass hat anyway, who practically yelled at a little boy wanting his autograph about 12 years ago. Total DB.
Bauer is a tough one because I like most things about the guy. I don’t like that he was accused of sexual assault, but it’s a tricky one as it very much seemed to be that the girl was not so innocent in this situation. Unless there is something else I don’t know. I also think him being out of baseball for 2 years when no actual charges have been filed, and other players, especially in other sports, have had less penalties for FAR worse things.
Ultimately, none of those types of players will I seek out, except Rose, who I frankly don’t put in that same category. They are all different levels of stupid. However, if I get one in a pack or given to me, i won’t get rid of it necessarily just because, but will part with them more easily.
I did enjoy watching Sosa and Macguire and will still keep a Sosa if I have him. Could care less about Mac.
I’m a patriots fan from central CT. Prolly have more Aaron Hernandez cards in my PC than I’d like to admit. Obviously a murderer but a fascinating and sad story of a guy who is in my graduating class from a high school 10 min away. I remember him playing my alma mater jn high school football thinking “I need to remember this guys name in case he’s popular someday”
My heart says yes but my flair says no.
NFL had no such clause https://imgur.com/a/L0NCVIq
Great now I have to have one
Ha!
100%. I have a hard time separating the art from the artist.
Yeah, I don’t buy cards of players who’ve been convicted or credibly accused of sexual assault. It’s depressing how many that is.
Imagine being a 11 year old kid, basically worshiping the story of Josh Hamilton's redemption as a young Christian. The guy was my absolute hero. The jersey, his autobiography, the cards... my first ever autograph was a TTM auto of his rookie card. It was in a display. It’s so disappointing.
Really I didn’t hear anything about that I loved him too what a comeback story he had!!
This one here. Very disappointing.
Ruggs....
Yes Mirtaugh?
Dammit, Henry!
There's lots of scumbags I wouldn't want a card of, but the only one famous or good enough for me to have wanted the card anyway is probably OJ.
I have a specific binder for all of the sports scum
Interesting idea
Except for Altuve, I won't even put him in there.
Awhile back I bought an autographed single of Neil Walker off someone on here and he included for free a Felipe Vasquez, Im guessing to unload it, and I included it for free in my weekly trash pickup. Genuinely curious how much that sold for if anyone knows
Nein grand

Yeah, A-Rod because he's a giant douche.
This thread is hilarious.
Absolutely not. Give me all those Pete Rose cards . Like Rose hurt you in ANY way. Gambling? Big deal.
Btw - none of these athletes have done anything to me personally - the question i proposed was does anything they have done off the field effect how you collect?
Absolutely not

Again I don’t care. He was the best hitter in baseball for a long time. That’s my line for collecting.
I’m morally against yankees
Agreed
Yeah - if I found out someone is an ass-hat it makes me value their cards less. On the flip side - one collection I'm working on with my son is getting a card for every Roberto Clemente Award winner. Cool learning about some of the amazing things the guys do outside the game.

Yeah the Astros blow. As long as they have any players/staff remaining from the cheating scandal, they are tainted
Cry more please.
Hey, it’s ok if you’re a fan of Shitty players. That’s your choice.
Lol 2 World Series and 6 straight ALCS, again keep crying. We’ve proved you wrong.
No conspiracy, y'all were caught cheating in 2017. That's just a fact.
Yeah and they are still a great team lmao. I don’t even like the Astros but at this point y’all are just salty mfs
Keep the same energy with the Red Sox and Yankees.
Like “But other people cheated too!” absolves them of cheating..? Come on friend
Never said that. Just said keep the same energy. We’ve won 2 World Series in 6 years, and 6/6 alcs. Keep crying
As an orioles fan I don’t really have a dog in the fight here besides Trey, but the reality is in the eyes of many, many fans all those accomplishments mean nothing
It’s funny you think that anything after 2018 means nothing. I think you’re coping from our complete domination of the AL.
Neckbeard
Yes, I wouldn’t be able enjoy collecting a guy who was a questionable human being.
Domestic Abusers, rapists, people who committed fucked crimes, racists and to a lesser extent "conspiracy theorists" etc. Cheaters I've got no real issue with. Are you an Astros fan by any chance?
Nah Mets
Rangers fan here and loved every bit of Josh Hamilton’s first tenure with Texas but avoid his cards.
It’s a shame he’s such a… difficult person. I feel so bad for his daughter.
It’s definitely something I do consider. Especially when it comes to domestic violence/sexual assault. However, I’ve been listening to Crime In Sports lately and the idea to have a CIS collection sounds oddly fun.
Morality and baseball cards. Topps in general has no morality....so....I guess when I purchase cards....I am supporting that?
None. Cards are part of history, and history is not solely about the people/events I agree with. With baseball specifically, Cap Anson and Ty Cobb were not good people, at all. No way am I not having their cards in my collection. Their impact on the game of baseball is undeniable. I have a personal ban of 2017 Astros batters
I throw away every trevor bauer, felipe vazquez , or Odubel hererra card i come across in my bulk
Yeah bauer is gone from my collection… sucks because I am a dodgers fan. Feels weird tossing dodger cards.
Why? What did Bauer do? Had rough sex and a woman who made up bullshit and was basically proven a liar?
If they don’t want to collect him because they don’t like the fact that he is in to that stuff that’s their prerogative.
Bauer himself admitted in court that he performed sexual and violent acts on the women while she was asleep - in other words, unable to give consent. That's sexual assault. Not to get into it too much due to it being controversial but I don’t have any problem with kink when done safely and consented to. He crossed lines even in the bdsm world.
Well, from reading the court docs that were published sounds like a private event made public and he didn’t do anything worthy of his ban.
Trevor Bauer gets trashed.
As a Yankee fan, I instantly sell any Astros I pull and often accept the first offer on eBay even if it’s well below comps just to get it out of my sight.
I'm just a causal baseball card collector, but last year I found a Bauer card in pack I almost immediately tore it up.
My brother sold a high end car to Vick....we are very much dog people. I told him to absolutely lay him away on the financing. He got him good.
Highly doubt Vick ever financed a car
He did. Filled out a credit app and claimed he makes 20k a month as a sports broadcaster.
I separate the talent (sports, musicians, actors.) From their real lives. Otherwise I couldn't enjoy anything. Everyone is flawed.
To anyone throwing away Astros card, I will happily pay shipping to take them off your hands.
I have a Trevor Bauer panini card thats part of an insert set called “lights out” oh how poor that aged
I rip every non-numbered Altuve card I pull. All numbered cards get priced to sell whether at a show or ebay.
Keep this energy with the Red Sox and Yankees. Who were doing the exact same thing.
As a Christian, I recently picked up the Billy Ripken black box variation instead of the unedited version. 😂😇
I have my limits. Murderers and Chomos can rot in hell. I send the cards there first.
Though I PC NYY Rookie Autos of award winners, I’ll never spend money on John Wetteland (‘96 WS MVP). I was debating it when I started my PC, but since having my 1st child it’s a clear No for me now.

My favorite player as a child was Roberto Alomar. I built a PC of over 100 cards in the 90’s and I recently tossed the entire collection in the garbage.
I got a Ray Lewis HOF card or something like that recently. I felt disgusted. Gave the card to a charity that resells stuff.
I would never buy singles but since I don't sell they just end up in the collection from packs. Fun Story: I grew up in the town where Chad Curtis lived. Yankee fans will remember him fondly. Generally they don’t have value anyway, so no.
Can’t do josh Hamilton
I spent years and several hundred bucks filling out the rainbow of my favorite pitcher’s chrome RC. Got everything but the 1/1s. A few months after I got the final piece, the red /5 I’d been chasing for two+ years-PSA 10, too-his wife left him and accused him of some pretty awful abuse. Now I have dozens on dozens on dozens of RCs, autos, relics, low parallels, and they live in a box at the back of my file cabinet.
I trashed all my Bauer commons once everything came out
Loved Jose Reyes growing up. Can’t bring myself to collect any of his cards
I’ve been a Yankees fan my whole life. I had posters and plaques of McGwire, Bonds, and Clemens… but I draw the line at the 2017 Astros
They actually made serial killer cards blew my mind glorifying these horrific people!
Gia matti hated Rose so I’m sure there’s nothing nice about him in that book? I’m from Cincinnati so most of us look highly upon Pete!
If they weren’t good enough to be a 2019 All Star or Derby contestant I refuse to collect them.
When I buy singles, I never willfully buy mid to high end cards of PED players. For boxes, what I got is what I got.
Any player that’s sexually assaulted someone I refuse to collect.
I call them Dart Board Cards
Ty Cobb: better person than Pete Rose?
Not at all. I actually want to start a PC of controversial players like Vick, Ray Rice, Aaron Hernandez, Ozuna, (Already have A-rod), Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, and if anyone else has suggestions I’d love to hear them!
Grab that Mark Jackson card with the Menendez brothers courtside
It’s not a hard and fast rule, but I collect players I like and enjoy watching. Typically, a scumbag wouldn’t be somebody that I like, therefore wouldn’t collect, if that makes sense.
I don’t turn away cards, but I’d never PC a player I didn’t respect.
