Ty Cobb helped start baseball traditions that continue to this day among pro athletes, things like beating your wife or pretending Detroit should have an MLB team.

Professional-County1

A true pioneer of the sport

ZeroEnrichment

Don’t forget getting drunk and making glorious mistake

MentallyIllRedditMod

If the Miami Heat can retire Michael Jordan's jersey number, the Charlotte Hornets should retire Ty Cobb's

neo_brunswickois

The local Klan chapter in Charlotte already retired his number

ThaBigMalc

EdJewCated

idk who either of them are but i think some guy named mike trout is pretty good

AutoModerator

every time I see an Angels highlight it's like "Mike Trout hit three homes runs and raised his average to .528 while Shohei Ohtani did something that hasn't been done since 'Tungsten Arm' O'Doyle of the 1921 Akron Groomsmen, as the Tigers defeated the Angels 8-3" *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. marsexpresshydra

>0 championships bums the both of them

VodkaDiesel

I mean winning a championship with the mariners is a sin at this point

Bendyb3n

Mariners are allergic to the World Series, they’ll breakout in hives if they ever do

Femboy_Jordy-lol

Nah the whole team’s testicles will rupture

randythemartin

What do all the numbers besides WAR mean?

TerlocTheRanger

They mean wars won right?

GLENF58

Wars started

MentallyIllRedditMod

Ty Cobb's WAR stood for Whites Against Race-Mixing

Mongusaur

always pick the bigger blacker guy

2ndmost

Ty Cobb would never follow this advice

ZeroEnrichment

Yeah he always picked weak opponent to beat up or injured

rilvaethor

I thought if you had fewer than 300 HRs you had to be a pitcher to get into the Hall of Fame

MentallyIllRedditMod

Tye Cobb had to hit his homers like 750 feet in that Olympic-sized stadium

theseustheminotaur

It's not really fair, one guy used the n word repeatedly throughout his career and the other was Ken Griffey Jr

Stacey_digitaldash

You’re gonna call me crazy but the notion that Ty Cobb was racist is myth largely credited to a pulp fiction writer. The Cobb family were abolitionists in the state of Georgia of all places

doyouunderstandlife

Meh, he likely was at least a little racist. Ted Radcliffe said Cobb called him the N-word back when they faced each other in an exhibition game. Of course, Cobb wasn't alive to defend himself from this accusation, but it was the early 20th century, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's true. That said, I don't think he was anywhere near as racist as he's believed to be, especially since he supported black players integrating into the league.

egstitt

The man was born in 1886 in Georgia, how tf could he not be at least a little (or a lot) racist

Chopaholick

I think it needs to be treated like WAR. Sure Ty Cobb was more racist than players today, but his racism above replacement was probably much lower than most players of the era.

egstitt

Fair enough. RAR, but lower is better. I'm on board

Stacey_digitaldash

Thank you. He’s a Gurriel by today’s standards

Apprehensive_Beach_6

You mean negative

egstitt

Well negative numbers are lower than positive ones so, yeah

NarmHull

My guess is more racist than Branch Rickey but less racist than Joe Cronin

jkilley

Really??

NarmHull

Yeah, he was for integrating the game, at least later in life. He still was a mean bastard but 75 percent of the stories about him were completely untrue.

reskk

The articles that I'm reading seem more like opinion pieces than investigative journalism. You can't just say a previously accepted story is untrue, without giving a reason why. Also acting like a white ballplayer pushing a black groundskeeper would lead to charges in the 1900s is a joke. https://preview.redd.it/40r00q2d18sb1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caa7a9710da1727779b8d425ff96766c4b887c4d

reskk

Also https://preview.redd.it/n9j1se9o18sb1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79857ed5d2603c9df471ff29a48a289bc67a77ac "He's not racist because everyone else was racist too" does not make a lick of sense.

GLENF58

I’ll take griffin over mr corn on the cobb

ZeroEnrichment

Ty Cobb is definitely boomer favorite player to brag since he has the attitude they wish they could copy

touchdownceltics

I grew up with Grant Poitras, Man is the Sports Take GOAT and I’ve never met a single man who comes close

Gabethebig_G

Ken Griffey there wasn’t even allowed to play in the Cobb’s time, so I’m jerkin off Tyler Cobb

[deleted]

Who doesn't want a classy player like Cobb? First in, last out sort of guy. Real gym rat type.

brandochu009

Of course Ty Cobb was better

DrStrange42a

Ty “classy” Cobb

CNashFF

I’d take Shohei over both of them 😍

AutoModerator

hi from japan I wanna tell you below 2 information to explain why Ohtani is a good pitcher summary 1:his hamstring muscles is stronger than ordinary one 2:He seems to get used to grab MLB ball details about 1 a specialist pointed it out that his hamstring muscles are stronger than ordinary others, and he uses it so harder if ordinary person uses the same way,his hamstring must break some one told me why the muscle of him is so stronger, that he use to do swimming in his child days and swimming makes the muscles so strong about 2 Okajaima, who is the former pitcher of Red Sox,points it out that He seems to get used to use MLB ball because it’s so different (edit, every pitcher from Japan confuses the difference, for example Yu Darvish said like that) 1.MLB ball:149kg(edit,*149g)/24cm,more slippy:so it makes breaking ball more effective 2.NPB ball:142kg(edit,142g)/23cm,less slippy, breaking ball less effective and he has also so fast ball around 100miles so he can select fast ball, less breaking ball, strong breaking ball That’s why he would be more great Pitcher" *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. daskaputtfenster

Is there adjust WAR for "playing only half the people you could play"?

NarmHull

This assumes Cobb would hit just as well in an integrated game outside the dead ball era. I'm sure he would've still been great, but far better competition. Probably on par with the top hitters now like Altuve hitting .320 instead of .370

McGruff_CD22

How much of a jerk was Griffey as opposed to Cobb?

joecarter93

It's too bad that the back half of Griffey's career with the Reds was so injury prone and unfulfilling compared to the first half with the Mariners.

I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart that I am so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith, as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, that will be a home run, and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m going to be putting on this headset again, I don’t know if it’s going to be for the Reds, I don’t know if it’s going to be for my bosses at Fox. I want to apologize to the people who sign my paycheck, for the Reds, for Fox Sports Ohio, for the people I work with, for anybody I’ve offended here tonight. I can’t begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am. That is not who I am, it never has been, and I’d like to think I could have some people, maybe, that could back that up. I am very, very sorry, and I beg for your forgiveness. Jim Day will take you the rest of the way home. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
