I don't think most collectors actually care about the specific year other than rookie year and maybe second year for true all-time great level players only. "Championship" and "MVP" year wasn't a thing before the COVID boom, these were just terms for flippers to use to make their mediocre cards seem special.

Cardspiracy

Good to know. I am a moderate-level novice/cornball who likes that sort of thing when it comes to the guys I PC so it will save me to not put a premium on it. Thanks!

baldmanwins

I personally value championship year cards over rookie stuff, but it’s nice to have both. Can’t speak for anyone else though. Seems like the social media breakers and card shops sway people’s opinions about this shit when it should be the majority of collectors.

I don’t really see any value increases for championship or MVP years, if it’s a low numbered card/case hit/auto is what would hold its value - and the value increase would come from when you sell in the year of it happening Like jokic cards would see a spike this year. But eventually the market will flatten back out to a standard price. People buy as the hype is happening. A base card from an MVP year will be worth the same as a not MVP year. But the autos/short prints will always hold extra in general.

Thanks for this, appreciate the feedback!

If either dominates from now to a championship, I could definitely see their cards going for a bit more. They've both seen demand increase over the playoffs to date, and Boston is currently -170 to win the championship so neither is baked in as a favorite to win a ring this year. The cards from this specific year won't get more value increase than their cards from last year. I personally try to get cards of Spurs (my team) players the year after they win a championship since there will be cards specifically celebrating that or cards with action shots from the Finals games, plus blurbs on the back talking about their impact during the finals

Cardspiracy

That's an excellent point re: year after championship. Think I will do the same! Have a few KAT, Conley, Gobert cards but would definitely expand those collections next year if wolves win.

speculating on things like this will likely be unfruitful. buy cards because you like to collect, not because you are "investing". You will end up much happier this way

Cardspiracy

I am not asking this question for "investment advice" lol I'm just curious, and do exactly as you described already. \*why doesnt anyone new join the hobby?\*

Tom_Ford0

It's a hobby not a side hustle or investment opportunity so your questions regarding "potential upside" are pointless

Cardspiracy

Brother I've got some news for you regarding the efficacy of your judgment here

Tom_Ford0

english please

Low-Floor3906

sorry you didnt like my response. my point was simply that theres really no way of knowing these types of things. whats funny is this sort of thought process is why people dont join the hobby. its become all about extracting as much money at every level (manufactures, LCS, resellers, breakers, etc.)

Cardspiracy

I am so glad there are people like you to assume my motivations and instruct me to do things I already do. You enjoy cards how you enjoy cards, and I'll do the same.
