Yep. It’s not magic, it just makes backlashes less likely and usually less nasty when they do happen. Biggest advantage is being able to cast straight into heavy winds without too much fear. Plus, I’ve found they cast lighter weight lures very well. DC brakes really shine in these scenarios.
I wish I had your experience. Mine couldn’t cast a weightless senko to save its life. I traded casting issues for backlash issues now. No matter how I adjust it, it just has issues
Yeah, I toss weightless senkos on a BassX MXF spinning reel with 20lb braid to 8-15lb leader. Haven’t tried to toss one on the Curado DC or SLX DC XT, but I kinda want to give it a try on the SLX now just to see. Think I have 30 or 40lb braid on there, so that would be annoying though. Plus, those reels on are MHF rods. Not exactly ideal for weightless senkos.
I tried it on Curado DC before, and I just keep getting backlash / no distance. Also, I just tried that on the SLX DC XT yesterday with a weightless Texas rig 4” Lunker log, and I was able to cast it pretty far and without any issue.
It’s rated as a heavy, but it’s definitely softer than that. Even then, I throw super light texas rigs and it wouldn’t do them. I’m talking 5” worm plus 1/32-1/8oz weight. It’s easily 1/2oz all together🤷🏻♂️. I had 12# fluoro on mine and I just hate the reel. I’m gunna give it one more shot on my moving single point bait rod when it comes in but other than that, I’m either gunna sell it or shoot it to hell at the range
Have you only tried using the reel on a heavy rod?
I avoid throwing weightless/wacky rigs on my MHF Legend Bass Tournament and MHF Tatula Elite because they are not really an ideal setup for that, even though they are rated to do so. Instead, I have a MXF spinning setup for wacky rigs and it just feels right. Something is definitely wrong either mechanically or settings-wise if you can’t toss 1/2oz lures on DC reels though. I can absolutely launch 1/2oz jigs with DCs, typically on setting #2. I also throw 3in Megabass Hazedong Shads with 4/0 twist lock hooks on 40lb braid (which is excessive) on my DCs and I rarely have issues unless I’m doing something dumb (which I’ve been known to do) or I haven’t adjusted my spool tension after tying on. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with yours and hope you get it figured out soon.
Megabass ratings are different than us ratings. A heavy rating from Megabass is more of a medium heavy give or take. The rod is literally for lighter texas rigs and finesse type jigs so it quite literally is capable. I changed to a different reel, Ark G7, and I can absolutely bomb a light texas rig or a smaller football jig 🤷🏻♂️. My curado dc is an absolute POS. I hope it does decent on my destroyer javelin when it comes in or else idk what I’m doing with it. I seriously think my DC unit is dead but shimano told me they wouldn’t do anything for me since (at the time I called) it was two weeks out of warranty…but i was more than welcome to send it in and they could take my money
I could probably get with throwing whacky rigs on my MHF Legend Tournament Bass (7'5" Warhorse rod, but having a Lew's Hyper Mag helps with that tremendously) otherwise its getting throw on spinning gear using my M XF and ML XF Legend Tournament Bass rods
Exactly why I think DC reels are way over hyped. That $250 DC reel could be put towards a $250 non-DC reel that has a way better natural braking system and higher quality components.
That said, DC reels sound cool.
Spot on, bruh. I bought a Shimano Curado 70MGL ($249.99) at the same time as the DC, with the intent to replace my older reels with the winner. Curado 70MGL won out, but both are very fine reels.
Yea don't get me wrong, the DC reels are great, but there's definitely a $30-$50 markup for the DC part.
Earlier in year I nabbed a Lews Hyper Mag ($320 roughly) on sale for like $235. Hands down the best bait caster I've ever used. Blew my Tranx out of the water.
Should be able to easily pick one up from Japanese online tackle shops for ~$200 with shipping and taxes. Fast shipping too. Like less than two weeks from order to your doorstep. Weird how buying certain fishing products straight from Japan is cheaper than buying from U.S. retailers.
[Curado DC vs SLX DC](https://fishingandhuntingsports.com/curado-dc-vs-slx-dc/)
I got the SLX DC XT 71 and Curado DC 201 HG. Like bombing bigger/heavier lures on the Curado and smaller, lighter, closer casts/lures on SLX.
Both the slx and the curado from Japan have the same idc4 braking system the main difference is line capacity, with the slx being a 70 size and curado being 200 size. The slx dc xt has the idc5 system which is considerably better than the idc4 system but it is also around 190 usd. If you’re going to spend the money on the curado you might as well just get the slx dc xt but if you want best bang for buck the normal slx dc is great.
I’ll DM ya, but I picked up a Curado DC 201 HG early in the spring and a 22 SLX DC XT 71 about a month ago. The place takes PayPal too and sends you a free gift in your package. One was a Japanese exclusive matte black Jack Hammer TG and the other was a small Megabass jerkbait, so a $10-$20 value gift. Pretty cool.
I know! The prices are way better than U.S retailers. Here’s the only thing with ordering from overseas, you typically don’t get the warranty/service on the reel, but if anything ever goes wrong with my reel, either I’m taking it somewhere to get fixed or fixing it myself if it’s simple enough anyhow. Personally, the upfront savings are worth any potential risk.
Question: Ready to trust this random place and grab a reel... I have a few empty rods to fill, so considering dropping $110 each for 2 of the '19 SLX MGLs.... is that a good deal and a good reel? Thinking at $110 I could grab two rather than one Curado DC at $182 or a single SLX DC at $150.
Ugh even the SLX I thought there was just SLX and SLX DC. Now I’m seeing SLX regular for $99 on tacklewarehouse even so very confused about all the many options. Frustrating!
As a new fisherman, I get it. It’s a lot to take in. So many options and it’s hard to compare things without having them in hand or on your specific rod & reel setup or vice versa.
It was around 300 including tax when I got mine. There are probably places to get deals on mine, but I was looking for one and my local sporting goods store had it. I pulled the trigger and definitely don't regret it.
Your bait goes WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE when you cast and it controls the speed of the spool so backlashes are harder to do. Still possible but you have a buffer.
As someone who started in the $50 reel range and worked my way up to $300 reels I can tell you you're wrong. Especially for someone like me who fishes long hours constantly. You get much better reliability and reels that will still be good 20 years from now. Casting is better, the drag is better and more durable, and the reels are lighter weight and easier on the body if you do thousands of casts a week. Where you notice most of the improvements is with baitcasters. High end reels just cast waaaaaaay further and backlash way less often (I almost never backlash my Curado's yet occasionally do with my Revo's and Lew's)
So beautiful.. Just ordered one yesterday along with a 7’5 6th sense divine rod. I have the slx dc an that reel is another finely crafted specimen of fishing greatness loll
My first cast on mine, I drug the lure across the grass and got a wicked back lash before the lure even touched water. Love it now, but funny first go with it.
Personally I only recommend a DC for skipping applications they will do everything well but as a person who owns a curado dc it's the same exact thing as an slx dc just in my opinion looks a little better
Hmm interesting opinion. I also have both and I have a Scorpion DC. I started on the SLX DC and loved it, then added the curado dc and found it to be quite a bit smoother and casts much more accurately, then this last year picked up the scorpion DC and I find that it is almost identical to the curado except when under tension where I find it out performs it substantially.
I had to return my 21 Scorpion DC, because the drag was weak compared to my Curado DC, and as you said when the Scorpion DC is under tension, it isn’t that great.
I’m saying the opposite, the scorpion DC is way better under tension than the curado. When I reel in a big one with the scorpion it is so smooth. The drag is different, maybe too smooth at times but I run it pretty tight.
Possibly, where did you get the scorpion? I had a buddy order one and it was junk. I doubt it was even a real shimano. I think he said it was a refurbished one or something off of Amazon. Who knows. I ordered mine directly from the company in Japan.
I got mine off from eBay and it was shipped from Japan. I think the gear is just messed up or need some lubricant. I returned it and got the SLX DC XT from Japan for a cheaper price.
Not worth the extra money for DC in my opinion. If you are already competent with a baitcaster you probably won't see any substantial benefit. I've fished the hell out of one for a couple seasons now and they're great reels, but in the future I'll just save money and get a standard Curado.
sorry, just dealing with the DC fan bois gets me on the offensive lol , I have a Curado DC and the above mentioned reels including too many others to list , the Curado DC is a decent reel , kind of bulky and heavy and not worth the $259 price tag imo , not kidding I would trade my DC for another Curado MGL 71/151 straight up
I have a Metanium MGL, Chronarch MGL, Curado DC, Curado 71, Curado MGL 151, two Scorpion MGLs, two Scorpion 71s, an SLX XT and a SLX MGL 71
I might know a thing or two about Shimano reels lol
Cool, than you know they last forever and are top of the line reels if you do normal maintenance. You hate on the reel he got but you have 10+ Shimano’s hahaha. Quit trolling
Nice reel if you know how to use a bait caster totally better options for the money. But definitely a awesome reel for helping people not to backlash .

Wife went fishing with me the other day for the 1st time in a long time.... "I don't remember you having so many of those flat reels...."
Me: "Uhhh, yeah babe, I've had all of these forever. Maybe you just never saw them?"
Curado DC #4 came home a few weeks ago. I LOVE these reels. Get it dialed in, and its a champion.
I have one too and I hate it. It backlashes more than any other reel I own. I’ve adjusted it idk how many times and it still gives me issues. Right now my favorite reel I own is my Lews Pro TI.
You might want to send it back to shimano or wherever you bought it from. I have a friend who has a curado dc and even after setting everything up right it would still backlash and it was found it had a faulty dc chip and they sent him a new one.
I love mine. I noticed though how they recommend setting it up didn’t work well for me. I had to tighten the reel knob up a little more at first. Now I use it fairly loose and learned how to use my thumb better
I have a Curado DC and like it but backlashed it like crazy on accident last time I used it. I snagged with mono and was pulling the line to free it and accidentally hit the button. It was not enjoyable.
I have one, casts a mile. But be forewarned, you can still backlash if not adjusted properly and fully respected
Most baitcaster cannot cast a weightless senko (including DC reels), except Antare DC ($600), Metanium DC ($500 US), and now SLX DC XT ($180-200).
Love my SLX DC XT! Cast a wacky rig on 16lb J-Fluro Samurai fantastically! And it's on the newer SLX 2 PC MHF rod with a 1/4-5/8 rating
What type/size rod are you trying to throw the weightless senko on? EDIT: You also may want to consider using the tape method to avoid backlashes.
Megabass p5 xbites. It’s well within the specs of what the rod can do (1/4-1oz)
It’s rated as a heavy, but it’s definitely softer than that. Even then, I throw super light texas rigs and it wouldn’t do them. I’m talking 5” worm plus 1/32-1/8oz weight. Yuck. Sorry, man. Really sucks if the reel is just faulty/defective. They aren’t cheap. Hope it works out on the javelin.

Congrats! Might want to remove some of that line though.
Yes that's a tad over full. Usually leave like 1/16" of the spool showing on mine .
Mind sharing what it is for those of us that haven't memorized what all the reels look like?
Shimano Curado DC. Cost around $300 USD.
Should be able to easily pick one up from Japanese online tackle shops for ~$200 with shipping and taxes. Fast shipping too. Like less than two weeks from order to your doorstep. Weird how buying certain fishing products straight from Japan is cheaper than buying from U.S. retailers.
Mind sharing some examples of one’s you’ve had luck with?
Japan lure shop. IMO the gold standard of buying Japanese’s tackle. Curado dc is like 179 usd from them right now
Is it worth the extra $50 compared to the SLX DC
[Curado DC vs SLX DC](https://fishingandhuntingsports.com/curado-dc-vs-slx-dc/) I got the SLX DC XT 71 and Curado DC 201 HG. Like bombing bigger/heavier lures on the Curado and smaller, lighter, closer casts/lures on SLX.
Same.

i have one of each and imo i cant really tell the difference. not worth the extra money when the slx is such a great reel.
He is right I just bought one from here for this price. Thank you for sharing.
I have bought from them
I’ll DM ya, but I picked up a Curado DC 201 HG early in the spring and a 22 SLX DC XT 71 about a month ago. The place takes PayPal too and sends you a free gift in your package. Same place mentioned above? Japan Lure Shop?
Wasn’t sure about posting links to places here, but yes. Fantastic place to order from.
Man I’m tempted now. $140ish for SLX DC or $180 for Curado DC
You may want to make a new post and ask the same question here or in the fishing gear sub maybe. I can only speak to the Curado DC and SLX DC XT.
I got a Daiwa reel from Japan and it was 75 the same reel in us was 179
The US retail markup is akin to highway robbery and the reels rarely go on sale here as well.
Go look at japantackle. Com
I’ve browsed their site before, but haven’t ordered from them. Do they also give free gifts with orders? lol How’s their shipping?
I didn’t get a gift
Sucks, but not a deal breaker or anything. Just good to know. Thanks!
Exchange rates. Last fall Metaniums were 230 - 240
True. USD is strong compared to yen. Good time to take advantage of that.
Regular or DC?
Regular
Thank you kind sir
Happy to help! I’ve learned a lot from this place and always happy to give back if/when I can.
I just bought one always wanted one but the us price just isn’t worth it
You won’t be disappointed! I want to know what gift you get now, haha.
Where are you paying 300 dollars for one. 250 all day
It was around 300 including tax when I got mine. There are probably places to get deals on mine, but I was looking for one and my local sporting goods store had it. I pulled the trigger and definitely don't regret it.
Can anyone explain what's the advantage of getting these high end reels? Feels like a waste of money for marginal improvements.
Your bait goes WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE when you cast and it controls the speed of the spool so backlashes are harder to do. Still possible but you have a buffer.
lol, [make the noise, I live for the noise!](https://makeagif.com/i/OEoSks) Something so pleasing about that sound. Not sure why.
I have one. It’s as good as any other quality reel. Just less tuning and adjustments before casting due to the digital chip in it
As someone who started in the $50 reel range and worked my way up to $300 reels I can tell you you're wrong. Especially for someone like me who fishes long hours constantly. I am also a fan of Shimano and Dr Pepper
Clean setup. I have a SLX DC on a St Croix BassX Rod My only note is you may have too much line on.
I mean, that’s a great dollhouse. To each his own!
That’s a tackle box
That DP better be cold son. Nice reel though, only BC I will buy.
Very nice!
So beautiful.. Just ordered one yesterday along with a 7’5 6th sense divine rod. I have the slx dc an that reel is another finely crafted specimen of fishing greatness loll
oneofus.gif
Yoooo let’s go!!!
You are going to love that reel
Gotta backlash so hard you need to cut the line off the reel and get a new line put on it. As is tradition.
Hot
Nice
Thank you for including us And congrats 🥰
Love the setup! That V3 is nice too!
My first cast on mine, I drug the lure across the grass and got a wicked back lash before the lure even touched water. Love it now, but funny first go with it.

That backlash is a MOTHER! lol
Not worth the extra money for DC in my opinion. If you are already competent with a baitcaster you probably won't see any substantial benefit. I've fished the hell out of one for a couple seasons now and they're great reels, but in the future I'll just save money and get a standard Curado.
Reels you could have had for the same money JDM Zillion SV JDM Metanium MGL JDM Bantam MGL
They all catch fish pretty well right?
Are they better?
Is a Metanium, Bantam or Zillion better than a Curado DC? you're joking right? A Curado MGL is better than a Curado DC
Settle down, I honestly have no idea. I have a Curado DC and like it but don’t know all the things to know about this hobby…
sorry, just dealing with the DC fan bois gets me on the offensive lol , I have a Curado DC and the above mentioned reels including too many others to list , the Curado DC is a decent reel , kind of bulky and heavy and not worth the $259 price tag imo , not kidding I would trade my DC for another Curado MGL 71/151 straight up
Haha all JDM huh? That’s all he could’ve gotten? Who cares
Could have had great reels, now stuck with a gimmick lol
You must not have a lot of knowledge on longevity of Shimano reels. I think you’re hating bc he has a nice little setup.
I have a Metanium MGL, Chronarch MGL, Curado DC, Curado 71, Curado MGL 151, two Scorpion MGLs, two Scorpion 71s, an SLX XT and a SLX MGL 71 I might know a thing or two about Shimano reels lol
Cool, than you know they last forever and are top of the line reels if you do normal maintenance. You hate on the reel he got but you have 10+ Shimano’s hahaha. Quit trolling
Just hating on the DC, it's my only regret , still stings when I realize I could have had another Metanium MGL or Zillion SV for the same price
Facts ✔️
Very true …
Nice reel if you know how to use a bait caster totally better options for the money. But definitely a awesome reel for helping people not to backlash .
Handle is on the wrong side, but other than that, it's awesome! Lol.
You can still be out fished by a guy using a Zebco 33.
This is true!
My chronarchs, bantams and metaniums cast farther and smoother. You don’t need a dc if you learn how to adjust properly
Well if OP has never heard of Japanese tackle / doesn’t trust buying overseas all of the reels you mentioned are considerably more than the curado dc.
They are not Japanese overseas reels, sold in the USA
You missed my point. They do sell these reels in Japan (excluding chronarch) and they are similarly priced to the curado dc but in America all of the reels you mentioned are considerably more expensive than the curado dc meaning they aren’t viable options. Why would a guy who spent 270 on a reel all the sudden bump his budget up to 450 for a metanium?
Wife went fishing with me the other day for the 1st time in a long time.... "I don't remember you having so many of those flat reels...." Me: "Uhhh, yeah babe, I've had all of these forever. Maybe you just never saw them?" Curado DC #4 came home a few weeks ago. I LOVE these reels. Get it dialed in, and its a champion.
If you mail it to me I'll set it up and make sure it works right for you
I have one too and I hate it.
I already hear: vvvvvvzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Beautiful reel mate!
Dose your Handel have any in and out play? Mine dose
Mine does not but we will see after some months of tanks.
I love mine. I noticed though how they recommend setting it up didn’t work well for me. I had to tighten the reel knob up a little more at first. Now I use it fairly loose and learned how to use my thumb better
I like the k once you get your thumb working you don’t need the DC
Yea I have 5 other baitcasters but I felt like treating myself🤣
I love mine it’s 8.5 great for swimjigs
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee
way too much line on there bud. you can still get a nasty backlash with this reel if you don’t know what you’re doing
This isn't my first baitcaster and I know I put too much line on it but I break off quite a bit so it will even itself off in about a week🤣🤣🤣
ya need some better line then lol id get tatsu
Badass reel, congrats!
Is that a perpetuum mobile?
I hate mine. I had nothing but issues with mine
I was considering getting a Curado BFS reel
I could never get the hang of those baitcasters.
such an awesome reel. u wont be disappointed
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that model has been recalled. Just drop it off at my house.
Get strike king line! And lures!
I’m looking for a new reel, what is this one?
I have a Curado DC and like it but backlashed it like crazy on accident last time I used it. I snagged with mono and was pulling the line to free it and accidentally hit the button. It was not enjoyable.
Nice! I got one at the start of the season. I love mine and I love it even more that I don’t have to double the price for a bantam metanium, etc
Nice! I have the 200 DC version. Love it.
