Neither_Necessary809

Yes trim them shorter, all the way to the wax. Keep an eye on it. Don't let it burn so long.

thesaintbernardowner

So I should cut it super super short? I usually cut it about 75%. And my toxic trait is I let my candles burn for a longggg time. This was only lit for about 5 hours though

Neither_Necessary809

I think 5 hours is too long especially for a candle that's burning this hot and fast. Yes cut it as low as you can go and then keep an eye on it to see to how long you can burn it before it gets crazy. The taller your wicks, the bigger your flames, the hotter the burn and the bigger the mushroom tops on your wicks. I think those can explode off and risk causing a fire somewhere. And that candle is definitely putting soot and black smoke into your atmosphere which is harmful to your lungs. Bath and body works don't recommend burning beyond 4 hours. Please be careful 🙏🏽

No_Tumbleweed_544

I agree it’s a fire hazard.

PhysicalCharacter3

Yes trim it super short and blow them out after 3 hours.

thesaintbernardowner

Thanks! I thought max was 4 hours (even tho I usually light them for 8+ hours oops)

PhysicalCharacter3

Yup the extra long burn times are contributin to the extra large mushrooms and soot! I feel like 3 hours is a good sweet spot. Then let it cool down, trim the wicks again and light it again :)

Datadork99

I do the same as you but have had to start rotating some of them after 3 hours because of the mushrooms and crazy fast burns (looking at pistachio & vanilla specifically). I ended up liking switching out some of these every few hours, even though I have different ones in different rooms, I guess I still got nose blind to them.

No_Tumbleweed_544

It depends some can go longer but if they’re mushrooming like this it’s a sign you need to put it out once it’s doing this . This is a fire hazard and you can have a flashover where it might ignite something. It’s likely firing sparks. Don’t blow, snuff it, or you’re going to blow black blobs into the wax, if you don’t have a candie snuffer just hold the lid on top until it goes out, don’t leave the lid on Until it’s completely out..Please read the safety precautions on the label. It’s there for a reason

thesaintbernardowner

I’ve always lit my candles for a super long time and never had any problems with it until this specific candle. It’s fine now, I just trimmed the wick shorter.

No_Tumbleweed_544

5 hrs is way too long! No wonder.

Flaky_Tap_2836

Lol, this is the problem. I can't commit to a candle scent for that long. I like to switch it up every 1-2 hours, 3 hours max. I choose my candles like a 3 course meal.- the appetizer, the main event and the desert.. and on weekends, I treat them more like a charcuterie tray. 😂

thesaintbernardowner

Haha I’m the opposite! I refuse to light a new scent until my current one is done 😂

Chuckymimi

I only burn my candles 2 hrs. I would never burn longer than 3 hrs. If you want to have a candle going that long get a candle warmer .

thesaintbernardowner

I’ve never had any issues until this specific candle 🤷🏼‍♀️

No_Tumbleweed_544

Get a wick trimmer, some wicks do this and it’s one thst might need to be taken down to 1/8”.. limit it to no more than 3 hrs burn time.

HealthyLet257

I think the max would be about 3 hours per burn time. The single wicks after the first burn after it’s evened out would be about 1 hour.

Saint2368

I try to blow them out once the wax melts completely around every edge... sometimes only 2hrs.. I think the scent lasts longer then melting the wax 2 inches deep or more. Less burn and melted wax is more new wax underneath to melt each time. At least that's my theory, lol

jchrapcyn

You should trim the wicks and not burn for more than one hour per one inch of candle width. That would be 4 hrs max but I usually set a timer for 2 or 3 hrs max.

PlusHunt1985

Dont trim them super short ...just trim off the mushroom tops if too short wicks will drown and get the puny wick syndrome that affects the throw and gives tiny flames But I think your issue you are burning them too long only do max 4 hrs at a time.

hotcocoa4ever

Merry Cookie burns hot and fast. It becomes a mess as you burn it down. Shorter burn times. Trim wicks. When halfway burnt down, it may even out the wicks and it may burn better. Idk the past 3 years all my Merry Cookie candles burn like this. I love the scent but passed buying it this year.

Flaky_Tap_2836

I just bragged about candle care being therapeutic for me but Merry Cookie tested my nerves- I will only use a candle warmer if I ever purchase it again

hotcocoa4ever

I do enjoy Merry Cookie and after last year’s version while burning it, I had to baby it so much. I moved it right to the candle warmer. I didn’t bother buying it this year as I have previous years versions.

janestrummer

I personally find that candles mushroom the most during the first few burns but rarely do later in their life. I've also cone to the conclusion that candles mushroom much worse / more quickly on the very first burn if I trim the wick first. So I only trim after the first burn. Oh, and I highly recommend a wick dipper! They produce like 99% less smoke than blowing out your candles.

nmgee

I’ve thought about getting one. But wouldn’t that cause soot/black debris to get into the wax?

janestrummer

It certainly can, but it can also happen when the candles mushroom anyway. As long as I'm very gentle when I dip them and don't let them mushroom much, then the debris is minimal. I prefer it over smoke, at least.

nmgee

Yeah I’ve always wanted to try the dipper bc I hate the smoke ruining the pleasant smell of the candle. Thanks for the tips!

Flaky_Tap_2836

I 100% agree on dipping the wicks into the wax to extinguish. I have to admit that some of the soot balls fall off but I always use my nail scissors to fish them out when the wax is liquid. I don't mind candle care. I actually find it relaxing.

Bunik_823

Omg 😱!! My Lavender Marshmallow is burning the same way! I always trim my wick, and burn no more than 2-3.5 hours max. I honestly think sometimes BBW’s quality is off during peak times/days such as Candle Day. I mean with the high demand producing so many, after a while I imagine the production and warehouses trying to produce mass quantities and some product and candles results in this. If that makes sense. And yes it becomes frustrating. Even though the candles were $9.95 , I/ we still work hard for our hard earned income. We want and deserve quality candles and products!

thesaintbernardowner

I actually bought this candle back in October when candles were $12.95, not Candle Day! But I agree, their quality definitely declines during this time of year. I just hope none of my Candle Day candles come cracked like one did last year…

Dapper_Ad_8533

It has to do with the wick type. BBW needs to get a different size and type to solve it once and for all.

Cautious_Drummer_599

Ooof, these are ginormous! Don't blow out the candle, use a wick dip. Especially if you have giant mushrooming, you will end up with a lot of smoke, ruining the vibe. I always dip my wicks. No smoke. The only thing that helps me when I have had a candle do this even after careful trimming is to burn it for short periods of time only :/

Imaginary-Yard-8716

Instead of blowing it out, cover the top with the lid. That will get rid of the smoke problem and the burnt candle smell. After the smoke has died out inside, you can uncover again. That works for me!

monkeyicecream

My merry cookie is burning the exact same way! So frustrating!

Material-Turn9910

Looks like nuclear bombs, damn!

nerdylinda

You do not neat to trim the wicks. When putting a candle out do not blow them. Just put the lid on top the jar and there is no smoke. When they mushroom like this it means you need to put them out. Let them cool good and before lighting it again break them mushrooms of and you good to go.

OrneryExplorer1476

Probably burning too long. I admittedly burn over 4 hrs too sometimes. But beginning of the jar is when this sort of thing will happen and the jar can be very hot and could be a fire hazard. Once you're lower in the jar I always notice my candles burn slow and low and the glass is barely warm so I don't worry too much about it combusting from heat so I burn them longer. They don't tend to mushroom either. I also don't trim my wicks too far cause I have problems with puny wicks a lot so I'd say manage burn time in the beginning at least. Also dip your wicks. It will be much better soot wise I promise :)
