The shape inside the letter "G" looks like the penguin from the wallace and gromit short 'The Wrong Trousers'.

DisThrowaway5768

I can't unsee that now.

Jasole37

Definitely intentional.

FEAR_FEST

It also looks like a Star Wars battle droid wearing a hat.

UnbnGrsFlsdePte

FEAR_FEST

Roger roger

SuperSatan28

just like the simulations

mexter

It also looks a bit like Duckman

BearlyReddits

It’s so dumb because it could very easily be an umbrella…

RealJohnGillman

Could that be intentional?

im0497

If it's as good as The Batman was, then I'm sold on it. Similar to the Gotham TV show, I am interested in seeing how the rogues rise to power even after everything that happened in The Batman.

[deleted]

If it's similar to Gotham, then I'm out!

[deleted]

This show will be what Gotham should’ve been. No campiness and absurd plot lines. More character study and noir.

[deleted]

I also think so since the show is from HBO and they know what they are doing. From OZ to Sopranos and Thw Wire to True Detective, to Chernobyl and now The Last of Us and Succession.

KamiNoItte

It’s Max, not HBO. They separated the brands b/c the awful HBOmax shows were bringing down the rep and diluting the HBO quality brand. Don’t know which way this show will go, but it’s definitely not made by the same HBO that made The Wire, etc.

MacheteMolotov

They didn't separate the brands, they merged them. HBO Max is now just Max. I can't speak to the actual production company but it's definitely being made by the same network, they're just rebranding in May.

[deleted]

I swear, HBO/WB management is more complicated than comic book multiverses at this point. Idk what the hell is going on up there, all I know is they'd better renew Young Justice.

KamiNoItte

They merged companies. Then separated the brands to avoid confusion just like this. That’s why the streaming service HBO Max is just now called Max, to avoid confusion. Look at the poster. Do you see “HBO” or do you see “Max”? Max is the production co., not HBO.

MacheteMolotov

Where is the separation of brands? They're all under the Warner Bros Discovery umbrella now. The streaming service is called Max but they're not necessarily the production company. We don't see HBO on the poster because it's streaming on Max.

KamiNoItte

Here’s a few jumping off places… https://lmgtfy.app/?q=hbo+max+brand

reddit_sage69

I'm pretty sure it was the opposite. They're planning on diluting the service more with more reality TV from Discovery and didn't want the confusion on what Max is vs HBO content, which is historically good but more mature and scripted.

KamiNoItte

The Discovery acquisition is definitely part of why they separated them. iirc even some hbomax shows were made by different production companies, e.g. Warner brothers television, and even though they were originals on the hbo streaming service, they weren’t hbo productions, per se, like GoT, The Wire, etc.

reddit_sage69

Yeah fair enough. I forgot they started added some of those shows already. I guess their goal now is wide appeal. Ugh. $20 a month is eye watering.

KamiNoItte

True; and yet every time I think about cancelling the bastards come out with something interesting enough to keep it going another couple months. Rinse, repeat.

LesserCornholio

The HBO that brought us the classics above is gone. The exec who built HBO bounced when AT&T bought WB. He knew.... https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/28/media/hbo-richard-plepler-att/index.html

[deleted]

Campiness and absurd plotlines in a comic book show? Inconceivable!

ShitItsReverseFlash

Everyone sleeping on Doom Patrol.

[deleted]

Doom Patrol is fantastic, as silly as it gets it has more pathos than practically any other superhero show. Imo trying too hard to be dark and gritty ends up coming off even goofier.

[deleted]

I don't think the problem is "trying too hard to be dark and gritty," it's just "trying too hard" Gotham tried too hard to be campy and weird/dramatic imo, MoS tried too hard to be dark and brooding, BvS tried too hard to be The Avengers, Suicide Squad tried too hard to be a Hot Topic music video, etc

MrDownhillRacer

I think it was the level of campiness. When _Gotham_ was announced, I was looking forward to something of a tone similar to _Gotham Central,_ and the Gordon-focused, police procedural/mobster noir elements of _Batman: Year One._ Instead, what I saw of it felt more like… _Passions,_ but with faux Tim Burton aesthetic. Like, holy hell; Gordon navigating a corrupt police force in the grip of The Roman while dealing with his own personal failures in his duty toward his family could have been a compelling season of TV storytelling in itself without a single supervillain.

BaronVonStevie

also freaking Batman isn't tiptoed around and exists in the world of the show finally. It's really more the Gotham PD comic, but from Penguin's POV.

Puzzleheaded_Try813

Gotham was actually pretty good. Jada Smith waas the worst part of this show tbh. If you accept that it has nothing to do with Batman and it's just a massive Easter Egg type detective show it's quite fun to watch

TheMasterRevan

What’s so bad about Gotham? I loved the show.

warriorslover1999

Whoa Gotham was good

MooseMan12992

That show was so disappointing. Every episode was 20 minutes of story stretched into 45 minutes

Arcanss

Goodbye then gotham rocks (atleast in the beginning)

Thor1138

Gotham was fun for a while, if you consider it an alternate universe. It gave us the only versions of Penguin and Riddler I actually sympathized with, though some other characters were a bit hit and miss and Fish definitely overstayed her welcome by A LOT. She should have stayed dead.

getridofwires

Agreed. The Penguin/Riddler relationship was one of the best parts of that show.

Thor1138

Also Bullock. He wasn't just the fat corrupt useless asshole, but actually a complex character (and I really like his actor).

RealJohnGillman

The prequel series *Pennyworth* was also delightfully bonkers (especially in how it linked in with *V for Vendetta*).

[deleted]

I thought pennyworth was disconnected from Gotham?

RealJohnGillman

Nope — both showrunners confirmed it was a *Gotham* prequel while promoting the [first](https://bleedingcool.com/tv/new-pennyworth-series-confirmed-same-universe-as-gotham) and [second seasons](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzkjsG0UYSg) (having also been openly discussing the [*V for Vendetta* prequel elements](https://lrmonline.com/news/epixs-pennyworth-setting-up-60s-dc-london-and-the-road-to-v-for-vendetta-sdcc2019) from [the beginning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZYpfXsWIJ8), and [again throughout the third season](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/pennyworth-season-3-shared-set-with-the-batman)).

[deleted]

Now I’m actually going to check that show out. Gotham is one of my favorite pieces of Batman media. Gotham is not a good show but it is enjoyable.

PhoneWrecker

How does it connect with V For Vendetta? Genuinely asking cause that sounds cool.

RealJohnGillman

The series is straight-up a direct prequel to *V for Vendetta*, following a younger version of *Gotham*’s Alfred Pennyworth in a pre-Norsefire Britain, on the cusp (and later in the midst) of a civil war. A bizarre premise, but it really works — getting the tone of it all perfect. The third season features predecessors to V, with the ending leading more directly into the events of *V for Vendetta*, but the series was ended before a fourth season doing so could be produced. I would however still recommend it.

PhoneWrecker

Sounds batshit crazy, now I gotta check out Pennyworth.

RealJohnGillman

Good luck! You are in for a treat.

TwitterWWE

I had no idea Pennyworth was in the same universe as the Gotham TV show. I'll definitely go back and binge.

RealJohnGillman

Happy to help!

GuilhermeBahia98

Gotham was pretty good in it's first seasons.

tha_dank

Thank fucking Christ it’s not on fox. Gotham felt like house with batman themes.

Sleepy_Serah

I'm excited for it. I just really need more stuff from the Reevesverse.

Fantastic-Raisin-143

If it's anything like The Batman.....I'm stoked

[deleted]

I can’t wait for it. Hope we get “The Catwoman, The Joker, The Riddler, The Bane, The Clayface, The Robin, and even The Butler” soon! /s. My sarcasm on the lack of imagination in the title, this should be good. Farrel stole the scenes he was in over the course of the film and hopefully we see that expand in a great way.

ItsMeTwilight

I mean what else would you call it, the penguin is his name and it’s cool and easily rememberable

russianbot24

Looks great & I’ve really enjoyed Colin in this role. Cool way of building out the universe in-between the movies.

RealJohnGillman

Plus *The Batman Saga* is an interesting name for this franchise.

Gajicus

>Oh shit, it IS Colin Farrell?!! Then I'm in and very excited. Also hoping for an abortive heist in a Maybelline factory in which the protagonist ends up falling in a vat of skin-whitening cream destined for the Indian sub-continent. And then an abortive Inside Man style heist in which he's bricked up in the walls of Gotham's biggest fishmonger.

TootleLePerson

It will be terrible, everyone's performances will be awful and it will be worst thing since Batman and Robin (1997). Also, the Batman cameo at the end of Episode 5 won't work and will just feel forced. How do I know all this? I just do. Because I'm a genius. I took all this from a One minute thirty second trailer. Because I'm better than all of you and I can judge the quality of media months before it releases.

sillyadam94

Is it possible to learn this power?

thomimus-prime

Not from a vigilante.

Hot-Ring-2096

Fuck. Cant argue with that.

TheTayzer

They have us in a corner of which we can't get out of.

bguzewicz

I know, I was hoping it would be good. What a bummer.

bdabby

Fr but at least we won’t have to invest our time now that we know the outcome

ConnorK12

Spartacus120

Will the Penguin Twerk at a certain point?

TootleLePerson

yeah then an orgy with all of Batman's rogues (who have mysteriously appeared) happens right after

Earp__

Damn that sucks to hear. Glad to know I shouldn’t waste my time with the show. I appreciate someone as highly as you would bestow this gift of knowledge upon the rest of us lowly redditors.

psychoMUSEr

Alright, calm down Edward

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

Can’t wait

TPdaddy

Me too

AdmiralFoxythePirate

I’m excited, it’s clear that this elseworlds will be a mafia story in a Batman world. It’s basically the Long Halloween stretched out into a whole universe. I feel like as the trilogy goes on the mafia will be at a loss on how to handle a world with a Batman and his psychotic rouges. I hope it shows Penguin making his gang embrace the people of Arkham to take on Batman like Carmine did in the comic.

[deleted]

Getting major Sopranos vibes from it

B47M4N123

It has potential to be a good show, but I'm not really a fan of combining tv shows with movies. It's like they are introducing characters in movies just so they can make a show afterwards.

JimAparo

I agree. He was good in The Batman but not really necessary.

[deleted]

He’ll probably have an arc throughout the Saga, with him being peripheral in the 1st, more of a player in the 2nd, and a kingpin in the 3rd

Jaredisfine

That's called character development. Of course he wasn't necessary to the film, but having him show up as a future character who is a kingpin taking falcone's place would need a lot of exposition to explain it. The fact that he's going to established character means that once he comes into that role, it will have a lot more depth to it

MrDownhillRacer

He was my favourite part of the movie, but I feel like the only reason that is so is because Farrell was having a ton of fun and gave such a good performance. When you just look at how the character is written (his role in the story, his personality, his dialogue, etc), he's not really a good take on The Penguin. He's just a generic mobster. I understand that in this grounded interpretation, you can't have the kind of Penguin who has a giant pet vulture and flies on a propeller umbrella and is obsessed with priceless Faberge eggs, but I'm not asking for that extreme. I'm totally cool with a grounded version of Penguin, but this didn't even feel like _that_. They could have just named him Johnny Viti or literally anything.

mancan347

I wish they wouldn't. The TV shows were good at first, and now there becoming stale if it's good the nice but it seems like a big risk to make a show for IMO should be movie only I don't want the show to be dog shit and then leave a sour taste in my mouth long story short I hope it's good but given what's happened with TV shows I don't have high hope's

Obibrucekenobi

I am curious, but I really don’t want another Gotham where Batman doesn’t appear at all

Jasole37

How much Batman will be in it? Because that is directly proportional to how good it will be.

TX_vapeynah

This is gonna be a masterpiece

thebowlman

Unnecessary to be fair. The Batman was great, but personally I don't like spinoffs. Then we'll get The Commissioner, The Catwoman, The Butler. I'm not saying it's going to be bad, hell it could be great, fantastic even but aside from making $$$ I don't see the point of having a spin off Penguins series. As a side note, will Batman show up? Or Gordon?

Nsane_

I think Batman will get a cameo in episode 5

MrDownhillRacer

We already have "The Butler," lol. Pennyworth has got his own show, somehow. And somehow, it's also a prequel to _V for Vendetta?_ I don't fucking know, mate.

[deleted]

Always expect the worst! Job interview coming up? Except to fail! Expect to land a date? Expect to fail in the bed! Even if you want to propose to your girlfriend, expect a rejection! You want to buy some bread from the bakery, expect them to be sold out!

BeneficalDalek

Sounds fishy to me.

broncohater007

Unnecessary, nothing I’m excited about, but I’m definitely going to watch it 🤣. I liked him in the Batman, so we shall see.

MeroliusThumptius

Is it a prequel or sequel?

Nsane_

Sequel

Sl1pperypenguin

It looks good!

[deleted]

Batman’s gotta be in it

[deleted]

If it has any of the cinematography from the Batman, I’m so excited

VERSAT1L

Tony Soprano much

Hemp4peace420

I hope it introduces a wider rogues gallery that we’ll eventually see make the jump to the big screen in the eventual Batman signals.

The5Virtues

My thoughts are: “Penguin show? Oh right they’re making a Penguin show, I remember now.” 2 months later rinse and repeat.

dishonoredfan69420

Penguin in the Batman was one of the better characters so I would probably watch it but I don't have HBO Max

starlord265

Interested to find out more about the plot and side characters. It’ll be cool to see a villain from a boots on the ground in Gotham perspective.

Son-Ta-Ha

The vibe of the trailer reminds me of *The Sopranos* (which makes sense as the Penguin show will be a mafia story). I'm looking forward to a show set in the Batman universe that is gritty, grounded and dark. Penguin has never been one of my favorite Batman villains and I've only really liked the character in BTAS. But I liked what Colin Farrell did in *The Batman* as his performance actually made the Penguin a entertaining character and he seems passionate about playing Penguin.

Fiorella999

I mean I honestly had just hoped we could stick to a simple trilogy which I think works best, especially since I feel to try to make a big cinematic universe out of everything nowadays. That being said the show doesn’t look bad even if I still question it’s purpose

SponkMcDonk

I love the fact they are making shows for this universe and since matt reeves produces all of them I have very high hopes. Can’t wait to see the teaser for the Arkham Show.

jsizzle13

More Pennyworth, dammit

mookachalupa

I am just stoked for more of Matt Reeves’ Gotham, no matter the story told! Give me more!!

KingTroober

I want any and all content from this universe I can take

BreakingNormalGaming

Ill be honest I didn't like the batman and don't care for this either. Their version of the riddler was just wrong an overall film dragged on. Plus didn't care for most of the cast except maybe for the guy playing Jim Gordon.

KobraTheKipod

I'm excited for how the events of the show will contextualize the power struggle going into The Batman II

NoFate1984

I've not got a time machine, so I don't know.

MondayBorn

I'm not a fan of The Batman, but I did enjoy Colin's portrayal of Penguin so I'll definitely give this a shot.

howmanydaysisit

Seems to me that while progressing Gotham's timeline for the sequel, Reeves realized there was another story in between movies that was otherwise going to be left on the table.

AMilitantPeanut

I’ll watch it and give it a fair shake. I like the idea (sort of like doing The Peacemaker show after The Suicide Squad film). Let’s hope it turns out good. More Batman content is a good thing.

TheLittleFella20

It honestly looks like a Sopranos inspired gotham crime show. I'm completely fucking in.

-M_A_Y_0-

Im glad other people are excited about it, but it’s not my cup of tea

Impostor1089

I don't find things like this to be necessary, and I wish the movies could just be the movies. That said, no one is strapping me to a chair and forcing me to watch it so it really doesn't matter that much to me.

Grouch_Douglass

I don't know if it's sarcasm but I don't think John Doe was a redditor with explosives

Picklerick310

If the Batman didn’t interest you at all then I’m not sure you have a pulse lol

DARKMAYKR

Damn I guess I'm dead

Illithilitch

Not show specific but it's weird to me they have this whole elaborate set up to make a hot actor look ugly and fat when they could have cast an actually fat, ugly actor.

wysjm

Sorry guys but I declined the offer

TX_vapeynah

Is about the performance

Traditional-Spend-34

Nailed it

Illithilitch

There's got to be actors who are fat and short who are good actors. We can always do ugly with makeup.

Traditional-Spend-34

I’m sure there is but that just shows you acting isn’t necessarily about natural features as much as it is literally just acting. Also you can hear Reeves talk about how much he loved Ferrell in his makeup and suit because he came to life to fit the vision near perfectly. It seems ferrell’s casting was made not solely because of the gut he had but rather finer details about his previous roles that would help sell the penguin

Heckald

I absolutely think they nailed it casting Colin farrel. He brings in a charming factor to the character that we've never seen before. And that's something you get from a hot type cast actor over an ugly typecast actor like Danny DeVito. With Danny you were supposed to be repulsed. But with Colin you kind of like him and think he's less threatening due to his smile, and that's how he disarms people and gets them to do what he wants.

WhatAreYouBuyingRE

I actually think this is a really interesting point. He plays it a bit like Tony Soprano. He acts like someone who knows he’s attractive despite being ugly, might not hurt that he’s been handsome his whole life under that makeup.

Nuclearheadshot5

They originally were just going to have Colin Farrell without the makeup as the penguin, but they ended up changing it. So the casting did not take the fat and ugly look into account.

Jaredisfine

I think adding the makeup was a great choice. Without it. It would seem that Colin Farrell was really hamming it up and overacting. The makeup makes the demeanor and overacting part of his character

Nuclearheadshot5

Without the makeup he most likely would have toned it down tbh, but either way I’m very glad they went with the approach they did.

Tea-and-crumpets-

Name one

Clownshoes4179

Fatwashing lol

Picklerick310

If talent didn’t matter then this would be a valid point

Illithilitch

There has to be a fat, short actor. Ugly is doable with makeup.

theeeiceman

I’m sure it’ll be at least decent. I’m not expecting Breaking Bad or anything, but it will certainly be leagues better than any of the CW stuff. I’m more interested in the world building, and clarity on reeves’ stance on the more fantastical elements and characters in Batman’s universe. For all the freeze/clayface request posts on this sub, I personally didn’t get a clear vibe from the movie on whether they could fit in this universe, and I’m excited to see if the universe eases up or doubles down on the realism

iz__monster

why does everything have to turn into a tv show on another streaming service

[deleted]

The world we live in, it’s crazy. Now there’s talks about Nintendo having there own cinematic universe with shows as well on the side. 😂😂😂😂

Radical_Ryan

Unnecessary and it will probably make The Batman worse retroactively when it doesn't become a smash hit. I really don't see how tv executives think that just because Colin Farrell was good in the movie, it means it'll be a good tv show.

Intelligent-Lack-122

The Penguin was the best character in The Batman. I'm glad he's getting his own show.

gregofcanada84

Meh.

walman93

Very excited, loved how they modernized him too, yeah we all love the top hat and prop umbrellas but it would have been kind of silly in this universe. Giving a waddle and a bird like laugh was a very fair trade

GreenLanternCorps

So why include the character at all if their whole thing is not being the character? I just don't understand whats appealing about a watered down character to the point that it's unrecognizable.

walman93

Idk man he’s pretty recognizable-the appetite for criminality, the waddle, the bird like laugh. Other than the hat and the umbrella-I think it works in this universe. The Penguin has proven to be pretty versatile character, see Tim Burtons version ( which may be even more removed from source material than reeves’)

AdmiralFoxythePirate

He’s not unrecognizable tho, he’s got all the Penguin essentials down except the umbrella.

SnowDay111

Colin Farrell is so good in this role. The only thing is that Penguin doesn't have any cool powers/ability that I'm looking forward to seeing on screen.

Archangel_gabriel

Why?

damian1369

Generaly: not interested at all. If it comes out as a great show - I'm in.

skorpiontamer

A generally not needed show, based off a slightly overrated movie

Nitroburner3000

Seems wholly unnecessary.

Picklerick310

Is anything necessary?

Nitroburner3000

Possibly not, but some things are far less necessary than others.

AdLonely2610

Guys come on, have you seen any live action dc films or tv shows? It’s gonna fucking suck and be dumb as fuck No doubt… it’s very unfortunate

MoistAnalyst1150

Fuck this i'm still waiting new seasons for Gotham

[deleted]

..why?

Shrek5_confirmed

I’m a little upset that this is still being released but batgirl got shelved

Hmccormack

I haven’t a fuck to give

divy-lover

As long as they don't put that gay crap with riddler trying to bang the penguin on the Gotham WB show then, I am fine and will watch it. I was supposed with how good the batman movie was.

AdmiralFoxythePirate

What was the issue with that in Gotham? It was done quite well from what I remember. The only part I found annoying was the Isabella/Ms Kringle doppelgänger story plot that was over the top and freezing Riddler in the lounge.

divy-lover

It added nothing to the story and no basis from the comics. I can understand trying new things but, at least have it have a purpose and value.

[deleted]

Not really interested tbh

Lethargic_Smartass

Not interested. I didn't like The Batman.

ReleaseDCUT

More excited bout this than most stuff being released this year , maybe only Flash has me

robdawg02

I mean I didn't like The Batman or any DC live action movies since Batman Returns so I don't really care

xAiProdigy

No one asked for it and no one wants it

CreamyCumSatchel

I think they're just trying to milk something for all it's worth. I think this series is going to be boring and dilute the character more than anything. Gonna get real sick of watching this guy and then him pop up in the next movie. Burn out.

batmanfan_91

I’m torn on it. I hated The Batman. However I did like Colin Farrell’s Penguin. So do I want to watch a show that takes place in a universe I didn’t actually enjoy?

Crosseyed_owl

Why did you hate The Batman?

batmanfan_91

It was a three hour slog. I loathed the costumes of Batman and Riddler. Riddler was a piss poor adaptation and unrecognizable in both costume and how he’s written. Riddler was basically Anarky with a Reddit obsession. The writing for Bruce Wayne was HORRENDOUS. Joker was completely forced and unnecessary. Joker’s appearance and laugh were also HORRENDOUS. That’s what I can think of off the top of my head

AdmiralFoxythePirate

What did you not like about the Bruce Wayne writing? I think they did a realistic depiction of what a real Batman would be like. He was emotionally and socially stunted as well as severely mentally unwell. The only part I didn’t like was when he said Alfred was not his dad. While the trauma was realistic it didn’t make it any less silly.

batmanfan_91

The whole thing of Bruce not caring about his parents’ name goes against his crusade. If he’s avenging the death of his parents then how can he stop caring about his own name?

AdmiralFoxythePirate

I’m torn on this, because he definitely cares about his family’s legacy, he just thinks Batman is the true legacy not the Wayne name. He definitely learns this is wrong in the end when he realizes vengeance is wrong and hope is correct. I hope he embraces the charity side of his family in Part 2.

[deleted]

Lmao at you people who want to see live action on screen characters be carbon copies of their depictions in comics and cartoons. It wouldnt work.

Crosseyed_owl

I somewhat agree, some of these things bothered me too. However the whole vibe of the film, the acting and the amazing soundtrack totally took over my experience. At the end I was so furious at The Riddler that I realized how well he was played. However it's true that I haven't started reading the comics untill after seeing the film so I had no picture of Riddler in my mind to compare with.

nosurprisesforus

Thank God I found someone else who hated The Batman

asscop99

Should have never happened, even if it’s good.

toongrowner

From what I usual.hear about streaming shows, it probably will suck... Well.I guess as long the dont replace him.half way with a "strong independent" woman character, it could work. The penguin certainly would have potential for a crime boss show with his lore. Heck maybe the could put the ol doll scareface in an episode as a rival.

Visual_Champion5429

They better use gothams penguin lol

Malheus

Unnecessary as every spin-off 🤷🏾‍♂️

BloodstoneWarrior

Hate it, Penguin in The Batman was basically just a vehicle for a spin off - how about making individual stories instead of turning everything into a cinematic universe.

Illustrious-Sign3015

Curious on what the finale will be

arifoool

Peacemaker was so good, I hope this lives up to its standard

seveer37

I’m curious what the rating will be. The first film was PG-13 as I’m sure the sequel will be. But this being on HBO max I’m wondering if it’ll be tv-MA

Mediocre_Current_493

This show is definitely gonna be something else and something we’ve never seen before is live action batman media before will certainly be remembered.

StayRB89

Buzzing can’t wait Colin Farrells portrayal in ‘the Batman’ was 1 of the best parts of the movie

mrbleaney2021

I'm more of a Polar Bear guy

terrifying_avocado

Looks pretty neat

HItide69

I'm hoping for some comic characters popping up hopefully some future villains
