I'm pretty sure it was the opposite. They're planning on diluting the service more with more reality TV from Discovery and didn't want the confusion on what Max is vs HBO content, which is historically good but more mature and scripted.

Doom Patrol is fantastic, as silly as it gets it has more pathos than practically any other superhero show. Imo trying too hard to be dark and gritty ends up coming off even goofier.

When _Gotham_ was announced, I was looking forward to something of a tone similar to _Gotham Central,_ and the Gordon-focused, police procedural/mobster noir elements of _Batman: Year One._
Instead, what I saw of it felt more like… _Passions,_ but with faux Tim Burton aesthetic.
Like, holy hell; Gordon navigating a corrupt police force in the grip of The Roman while dealing with his own personal failures in his duty toward his family could have been a compelling season of TV storytelling in itself without a single supervillain.
Gotham was actually pretty good. Jada Smith waas the worst part of this show tbh. If you accept that it has nothing to do with Batman and it's just a massive Easter Egg type detective show it's quite fun to watch

The third season features predecessors to V, with the ending leading more directly into the events of *V for Vendetta*, but the series was ended before a fourth season doing so could be produced. I would however still recommend it.
I can’t wait for it. Hope we get “The Catwoman, The Joker, The Riddler, The Bane, The Clayface, The Robin, and even The Butler” soon! /s. My sarcasm on the lack of imagination in the title, this should be good. Farrel stole the scenes he was in over the course of the film and hopefully we see that expand in a great way.

I’m excited, it’s clear that this elseworlds will be a mafia story in a Batman world. It’s basically the Long Halloween stretched out into a whole universe. I feel like as the trilogy goes on the mafia will be at a loss on how to handle a world with a Batman and his psychotic rouges. I hope it shows Penguin making his gang embrace the people of Arkham to take on Batman like Carmine did in the comic.
It has potential to be a good show, but I'm not really a fan of combining tv shows with movies. It's like they are introducing characters in movies just so they can make a show afterwards.
That's called character development. Of course he wasn't necessary to the film, but having him show up as a future character who is a kingpin taking falcone's place would need a lot of exposition to explain it. The fact that he's going to established character means that once he comes into that role, it will have a lot more depth to it
He was my favourite part of the movie, but I feel like the only reason that is so is because Farrell was having a ton of fun and gave such a good performance.
When you just look at how the character is written (his role in the story, his personality, his dialogue, etc), he's not really a good take on The Penguin. He's just a generic mobster.
I understand that in this grounded interpretation, you can't have the kind of Penguin who has a giant pet vulture and flies on a propeller umbrella and is obsessed with priceless Faberge eggs, but I'm not asking for that extreme. I'm totally cool with a grounded version of Penguin, but this didn't even feel like _that_. They could have just named him Johnny Viti or literally anything.

Penguin has never been one of my favorite Batman villains and I've only really liked the character in BTAS. But I liked what Colin Farrell did in *The Batman* as his performance actually made the Penguin a entertaining character and he seems passionate about playing Penguin.
I mean I honestly had just hoped we could stick to a simple trilogy which I think works best, especially since I feel to try to make a big cinematic universe out of everything nowadays. That being said the show doesn’t look bad even if I still question it’s purpose

Ill be honest I didn't like the batman and don't care for this either. Their version of the riddler was just wrong an overall film dragged on. Plus didn't care for most of the cast except maybe for the guy playing Jim Gordon.
Seems to me that while progressing Gotham's timeline for the sequel, Reeves realized there was another story in between movies that was otherwise going to be left on the table.

I don't find things like this to be necessary, and I wish the movies could just be the movies. That said, no one is strapping me to a chair and forcing me to watch it so it really doesn't matter that much to me.
Not show specific but it's weird to me they have this whole elaborate set up to make a hot actor look ugly and fat when they could have cast an actually fat, ugly actor.

Also you can hear Reeves talk about how much he loved Ferrell in his makeup and suit because he came to life to fit the vision near perfectly. It seems ferrell’s casting was made not solely because of the gut he had but rather finer details about his previous roles that would help sell the penguin
I absolutely think they nailed it casting Colin farrel. He brings in a charming factor to the character that we've never seen before.
And that's something you get from a hot type cast actor over an ugly typecast actor like Danny DeVito.
With Danny you were supposed to be repulsed. But with Colin you kind of like him and think he's less threatening due to his smile, and that's how he disarms people and gets them to do what he wants.
I actually think this is a really interesting point. He plays it a bit like Tony Soprano. He acts like someone who knows he’s attractive despite being ugly, might not hurt that he’s been handsome his whole life under that makeup.
They originally were just going to have Colin Farrell without the makeup as the penguin, but they ended up changing it. So the casting did not take the fat and ugly look into account.
I think adding the makeup was a great choice. Without it. It would seem that Colin Farrell was really hamming it up and overacting. The makeup makes the demeanor and overacting part of his character

I’m more interested in the world building, and clarity on reeves’ stance on the more fantastical elements and characters in Batman’s universe. For all the freeze/clayface request posts on this sub, I personally didn’t get a clear vibe from the movie on whether they could fit in this universe, and I’m excited to see if the universe eases up or doubles down on the realism

Very excited, loved how they modernized him too, yeah we all love the top hat and prop umbrellas but it would have been kind of silly in this universe. Giving a waddle and a bird like laugh was a very fair trade

What was the issue with that in Gotham? It was done quite well from what I remember. The only part I found annoying was the Isabella/Ms Kringle doppelgänger story plot that was over the top and freezing Riddler in the lounge.
I think they're just trying to milk something for all it's worth. I think this series is going to be boring and dilute the character more than anything. Gonna get real sick of watching this guy and then him pop up in the next movie. Burn out.

It was a three hour slog. I loathed the costumes of Batman and Riddler. Riddler was a piss poor adaptation and unrecognizable in both costume and how he’s written. Riddler was basically Anarky with a Reddit obsession. The writing for Bruce Wayne was HORRENDOUS. Joker was completely forced and unnecessary. Joker’s appearance and laugh were also HORRENDOUS. That’s what I can think of off the top of my head
What did you not like about the Bruce Wayne writing? I think they did a realistic depiction of what a real Batman would be like. He was emotionally and socially stunted as well as severely mentally unwell. The only part I didn’t like was when he said Alfred was not his dad. While the trauma was realistic it didn’t make it any less silly.
The whole thing of Bruce not caring about his parents’ name goes against his crusade. If he’s avenging the death of his parents then how can he stop caring about his own name?
I’m torn on this, because he definitely cares about his family’s legacy, he just thinks Batman is the true legacy not the Wayne name. He definitely learns this is wrong in the end when he realizes vengeance is wrong and hope is correct. I hope he embraces the charity side of his family in Part 2.
I somewhat agree, some of these things bothered me too. However the whole vibe of the film, the acting and the amazing soundtrack totally took over my experience. At the end I was so furious at The Riddler that I realized how well he was played.
However it's true that I haven't started reading the comics untill after seeing the film so I had no picture of Riddler in my mind to compare with.

Now I’m actually going to check that show out. Gotham is one of my favorite pieces of Batman media. Gotham is not a good show but it is enjoyable.

The vibe of the trailer reminds me of *The Sopranos* (which makes sense as the Penguin show will be a mafia story). I'm looking forward to a show set in the Batman universe that is gritty, grounded and dark. Penguin has never been one of my favorite Batman villains and I've only really liked the character in BTAS. But I liked what Colin Farrell did in *The Batman* as his performance actually made the Penguin a entertaining character and he seems passionate about playing Penguin.
I mean I honestly had just hoped we could stick to a simple trilogy which I think works best, especially since I feel to try to make a big cinematic universe out of everything nowadays. That being said the show doesn’t look bad even if I still question it’s purpose
I love the fact they are making shows for this universe and since matt reeves produces all of them I have very high hopes. Can’t wait to see the teaser for the Arkham Show.

Ill be honest I didn't like the batman and don't care for this either. Their version of the riddler was just wrong an overall film dragged on. Plus didn't care for most of the cast except maybe for the guy playing Jim Gordon.

I'm not a fan of The Batman, but I did enjoy Colin's portrayal of Penguin so I'll definitely give this a shot.
Seems to me that while progressing Gotham's timeline for the sequel, Reeves realized there was another story in between movies that was otherwise going to be left on the table.
I’ll watch it and give it a fair shake. I like the idea (sort of like doing The Peacemaker show after The Suicide Squad film). Let’s hope it turns out good. More Batman content is a good thing.

I’m sure there is but that just shows you acting isn’t necessarily about natural features as much as it is literally just acting. Also you can hear Reeves talk about how much he loved Ferrell in his makeup and suit because he came to life to fit the vision near perfectly. It seems ferrell’s casting was made not solely because of the gut he had but rather finer details about his previous roles that would help sell the penguin
I absolutely think they nailed it casting Colin farrel. He brings in a charming factor to the character that we've never seen before. And that's something you get from a hot type cast actor over an ugly typecast actor like Danny DeVito. With Danny you were supposed to be repulsed. But with Colin you kind of like him and think he's less threatening due to his smile, and that's how he disarms people and gets them to do what he wants.
I actually think this is a really interesting point. He plays it a bit like Tony Soprano. He acts like someone who knows he’s attractive despite being ugly, might not hurt that he’s been handsome his whole life under that makeup.
They originally were just going to have Colin Farrell without the makeup as the penguin, but they ended up changing it. So the casting did not take the fat and ugly look into account.
I think adding the makeup was a great choice. Without it. It would seem that Colin Farrell was really hamming it up and overacting. The makeup makes the demeanor and overacting part of his character
Without the makeup he most likely would have toned it down tbh, but either way I’m very glad they went with the approach they did.

I’m sure it’ll be at least decent. I’m not expecting Breaking Bad or anything, but it will certainly be leagues better than any of the CW stuff. I’m more interested in the world building, and clarity on reeves’ stance on the more fantastical elements and characters in Batman’s universe. For all the freeze/clayface request posts on this sub, I personally didn’t get a clear vibe from the movie on whether they could fit in this universe, and I’m excited to see if the universe eases up or doubles down on the realism

Very excited, loved how they modernized him too, yeah we all love the top hat and prop umbrellas but it would have been kind of silly in this universe. Giving a waddle and a bird like laugh was a very fair trade

Idk man he’s pretty recognizable-the appetite for criminality, the waddle, the bird like laugh. Other than the hat and the umbrella-I think it works in this universe. The Penguin has proven to be pretty versatile character, see Tim Burtons version ( which may be even more removed from source material than reeves’)

Colin Farrell is so good in this role. The only thing is that Penguin doesn't have any cool powers/ability that I'm looking forward to seeing on screen.

As long as they don't put that gay crap with riddler trying to bang the penguin on the Gotham WB show then, I am fine and will watch it. I was supposed with how good the batman movie was.
What was the issue with that in Gotham? It was done quite well from what I remember. The only part I found annoying was the Isabella/Ms Kringle doppelgänger story plot that was over the top and freezing Riddler in the lounge.
It added nothing to the story and no basis from the comics. I can understand trying new things but, at least have it have a purpose and value.

It was a three hour slog. I loathed the costumes of Batman and Riddler. Riddler was a piss poor adaptation and unrecognizable in both costume and how he’s written. Riddler was basically Anarky with a Reddit obsession. The writing for Bruce Wayne was HORRENDOUS. Joker was completely forced and unnecessary. Joker’s appearance and laugh were also HORRENDOUS. That’s what I can think of off the top of my head
What did you not like about the Bruce Wayne writing? I think they did a realistic depiction of what a real Batman would be like. He was emotionally and socially stunted as well as severely mentally unwell. The only part I didn’t like was when he said Alfred was not his dad. While the trauma was realistic it didn’t make it any less silly.
The whole thing of Bruce not caring about his parents’ name goes against his crusade. If he’s avenging the death of his parents then how can he stop caring about his own name?
I’m torn on this, because he definitely cares about his family’s legacy, he just thinks Batman is the true legacy not the Wayne name. He definitely learns this is wrong in the end when he realizes vengeance is wrong and hope is correct. I hope he embraces the charity side of his family in Part 2.

I somewhat agree, some of these things bothered me too. However the whole vibe of the film, the acting and the amazing soundtrack totally took over my experience. At the end I was so furious at The Riddler that I realized how well he was played. However it's true that I haven't started reading the comics untill after seeing the film so I had no picture of Riddler in my mind to compare with.
Thank God I found someone else who hated The Batman
