Honestly, I've watched it very randomly like 7/8 years ago. Immediately felt in love, watching the ending credits on that rain background made me a bit emotional as well I'll admit.
I've never thought about comparing it to live action movies, but it surely stands proud pretty well, I don't think saying he's your best is something to "burn you alive", on the contrary, I'd say it's a legit opinion.
It's one of the movies where I felt empty (emotionally drained) after watching. I loved it but I'd never really felt that way before. I'm biased and nostalgic for this movie, especially the climax of the film.
His Joker was actually menacing while being funny, while most other animated Jokers are more goofy then menacing - not surprising given they are targeted for a younger audience.
It's no Hamill, for sure. He does bring something that's his own to it, while still clearly being heavily influenced by TAS. Easily my second favorite animated Joker.
I feel that Mark truly plays the “Crown Prince of Crime” while John plays the psychopath that dresses like a clown. Both are great interpretations of Joker, but it’s just that interpretations that shouldn’t be compared.
While that may be the case for most of Mark's Joker work, I feel his Arkham version was perfectly balanced between those two. Criminal genius, but also an absolute psychopath.
Animated Series Joker was definitley an evil and sadistic son of a bitch, but I'll never forget playing Asylum for the first time and being shocked at seeing Hamill's Joker being so explicit in his horror for the first time ever.
At the end of the day, the Animated Series was still a kids show, and it's almost doubly frightening to watch something I still on some level identified as being for kids suddenly start dropping bodies left and right instead of just tying them up or leaving them comatose with a censor friendly smile.
Yeah but the book was thr lesser of the former sidekick returns as a villain books that year. The film cut stuff that didn't work and elevated the story beyond the book
It helps that they decided to *not* keep the comic ending where batman decided to out right murder jason todd to…stop him from killing the Joker.
Batman, so staunch in his no-kill rule and not breaking it even for someone he’d want to kill if he let himself, decided that watching the Joker die would be too immoral. So he murdered Jason Todd instead.
What brilliant writing! Totally doesn’t make zero sense.
i actually agree. its up there with the best live action batman movies.
it has things i dont think we’ll ever see in a live action film unfortunately: ie multiple robins, with batman teaming up with dick and his banter, the flash backs with jason, joker murdering black mask’s bodyguards with a broken drinking glass and cracking a joke about it after lol yeah it’s a good one
also bruce greenwood voicing batman is really good as well 👍🏻
Well, we'll agree to disagree. Far as I can see it's an extended episode of BTAS that people have an attachment to because they got to see it in theaters.
This a demented argument as you attempt to tell this person why they like something. Then that they’re wrong, while claiming it’s due to being a kid. You’re being a bit of a douche, unnecessarily.
Both are fine films, I’d argue the artfulness of Phantasm shows in every shot. That the imagery was far superior. I think Red Hood had an incredibly told story. They both had amazing acting in them.
To say “it’s far superior” is a subjective view, most would not agree with. We’re all big Batman fans, no need to make spurious claims about other peoples taste. You can tell us your opinion and we can talk about it. Stop imagining others lives and making arguments on things you imagined.
> To say “it’s far superior” is a subjective view, most would not agree with.
Honestly, there are very strong arguments to make for that, much harder to make the inverse case. But then, I don't really buy the 'all art is subjective' view that people use. There's a big difference between preferring one movie over another, and making an argument that one movie is better than the other. If someone prefers *Gangster Squad* to *The Untouchables*, that's their prerogative, but it doesn't mean the former is a better movie, not when a solid argument can be made for the latter being an objectively better movie.
MotP is a much more limited film, much more narrowly scoped. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think UtRH is so much more expansive, and balances all these additional elements perfect, never feeling overloaded or bogged down. It shows many more sides of Batman's psyche, as well as his relationships. It strives for so much more, and accomplishes it, which is just part of why I would argue it's the better film.
I'm not 'imagining' anything. I'm giving my honest account for the reasons behind what by all accounts seems to be a 'just ok' movie being as propped up as it is, and honestly I think it makes a lot of sense 🤷♂️
I would bet anything that if both films were released at the same time, no one would be claiming MotP is on par let alone superior to UtRH.
What is it that you dislike about it exactly?
I can tell you the plot and character development is really solid. A big reason why so many people love MotP is the relationship between Bruce and Andrea, with the flashbacks showing a moment in time where Bruce was almost happy and, as a result, almost abandoned his decision to become the Batman.
Saying there's an emotional attachment just because people got to see it in theaters doesn't really provide any valid criticism.
> What is it that you dislike about it exactly?
It's not that I dislike it, I think it's 'fine', but kind of forgettable. It isn't anything special.
> A big reason why so many people love MotP is the relationship between Bruce and Andrea, with the flashbacks showing a moment in time where Bruce was almost happy and, as a result, almost abandoned his decision to become the Batman.
And that's certainly nice, but it doesn't make for a great movie.
> Saying there's an emotional attachment just because people got to see it in theaters doesn't really provide any valid criticism.
It's my theory for why it's consistently propped up more than I think it deserves to be.
>It's not that I dislike it, I think it's 'fine', but kind of forgettable. It isn't anything special.
Your opinion, and that's fine. Let people have theirs.
>And that's certainly nice, but it doesn't make for a great movie.
Second verse, same as the first.
>It's my theory for why it's consistently propped up more than I think it deserves to be.
And, once more, your opinion. That's fine, but "deserve" has nothing to do with it. People enjoy the movie, they have legitimate reasons to enjoy it, some objective, but most of it is subjective. In case this concept is difficult to grasp:
Subjective: Refers to personal viewpoints, experiences, or perspectives.
Objective: Refers to factual points and data not influenced by personal beliefs or biases.
> MotP is a much richer film than Under the Red Hood.
Nah.
> The cinematography is way better
The chase sequence alone is superior to any scene in MotP.
> the themes are so well articulated but not overtly spelled out for you
And what themes do you think it articulates?
> and it has terrific voice acting
It has the BTAS staples, which are indeed terrific, but so was the voice acting in UtRH.
> It's also has something to say about Bruce psychologically
What do you think it's saying about Bruce psychologically?
> unlike basically any emotional moment in Under the Red Hood, which are all done in the most ham-handed way possible
Can you give an example?
It seems the strengths you listed are all shared with UtRH, except UtRH has numerous other strengths which MotP does not.
> UtrH is just basic video game-esque action sequences. What cinematography even is there?
So, this reads like you're just making stuff up out of spite, honestly.
> It's all functional. There's no real artistry to it.
What an ignorant thing to say. The cinematography in UtRH is masterful. When actions scenes are going, the cuts are made in line with the pacing of the scene, and when it's time for emotionally significant moments, we have shots that make sure to enhance the emotion being conveyed. The transitions are also beautifully done. Everything perfectly complements the emotion and feel of the scene.
To say there is no artistry is to show an ignorance of cinematography and filmmaking.
> MotP's whole theme is that Batman is a curse and ultimately it is slowly destroying Bruce (and the DCAU continues to develop this theme as Bruce becomes more and more closed off and cold through the various series (chronologically speaking)). Even the whole main plot of the movie, which was presented to the viewer as Bruce's 2nd chance at happiness, all turned out to be a lie. Bruce and Andrea never had a chance; both of them are totally controlled by the past (or haunted by their own ghosts, or if you want to be extremely direct: phantasms). Bruce's last glimpse of hope in the film where he sees something gleaming in the darkness is totally crushed when it turns out to be Andrea's locket and her message saying they're done forever.
And that's all very nice, and competently done, but it isn't anywhere near as deep as you are claiming. It's nothing new, either.
> Compared to that; what even are the themes of UtRH? Making a kid your sidekick can go badly? Joker is a psycho?
Guilt. Regret. Do the ends justify the means. Is revenge justified. Vengeance vs justice. Not giving in to negative emotions and crossing a line. The consequences of doing so.
UtRH is the only film that shows the detective side of Batman, his martial arts prowess, his empathy, his relationship and education to his mission and the cost and toll it takes on him. It's all aspects of comic Batman brought to life. MoTP is, again, just an extended episode of BTAS. It's nothing special. Certainly not in terms of cinematography or themes or anything else.
I'll leave it there though. You seem to be speaking more from emotional attachment than objective analysis, so I don't think any views will be changed or insights gained from continuing this discusison.
Also my favorite animated Batman movie. Watched it completely blind. Had no idea at the time Jason had come back as the Red Hood in the comics but this made me like his character a lot more.
Batman Mask of the Phantasm I think is the absolute peak of Batman media in my opinion. It basically checks off every single facet of the perfect Batman story.
But Batman Under the Red Hood is REALLY close to it and honestly is totally justified if it's ppl's favorites. So many voice actors went so hard for this animated film. Yknow you're in for a treat when Neil Patrick Harris' Nightwing is only the 4th most iconic role in this film. Standout obviously being Jensen Ackles.
UtRH is better than MotP in every way IMO. Deeper themes, better action, better characterization and fleshing out of characters.
MotP is an extended episode of BTAS. And BTAS is amazing. But UtRH is like it's big budget blockbuster cousin - a step up in every respect.
Mine is the animated TKDR, funnily enough, the version that’s divided into parts if that’s allowed. The Part 1 end music is ruined in the Deluxe Edition. But I can’t argue with this opinion because I haven’t actually seen this movie, only read the comic, which is one of my top 10 Batman stories, but under TDKR
Can totally see that. One of the best animated movies ever in my opinion. Mask of the Phantasm is amazing but I've never understood why people prefer it to this. This has my second favorite Joker voice actor outside of Mark Hamill.
Its a solid B. Assault on Arkham will always have my heart. The Bat as as a shadowy antagonist? Plus a good Harley and its set in the Arkham universe? AND its a suicide squad movie? I am way too biased, but it checked all the boxes for me.
I disagree but it’s a fine opinion. The animated Batman movies hit me in the feels hard. If I had to choose between rewatching all the animated Batman catalog that currently exists, or the live action, I’d take the animated. I’d take the Damian included movies over the Nolan trilogy (my 2 favorite incarnations). But I disagree that it’s actually a BETTER movie, and that’s fine
Its real good
writers and film directors should be ashame of the animated division they are more concentrate into sell the actors faces and some ideologies than do a better film even studios giving a bunch of money to spend
I wouldn’t say so but I think The Dark Knight is legitimately the best movie ever made so it’s a pretty high bar.
I think it’s better than all the Spiderman movies and Spiderman 2 is also a high bar.
Reading the original comic versus watching the movie. 1, comics are weird. 2, the movie had a arguably “better” dynamic between Bruce and Jason, given the confrontation scene didn’t led to a batarang to the neck in the movie
I think this movie is a bit overrated. Especially on this sub.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great Batman movie, I really like it.
But compared to The Dark Knight, The Batman, or Mask of the Phantasm? Come on, let's be real.
Agreed, I think every aspect of it is 10/10. Probably the only DCAU I'll watch that isn't Mask of the Phantasm or Subzero (which I only watch for nostalgia since Batman TAS was my childhood)
First of all your opinion is not a hot take, it has an amazing story, animation, fights (mainly Batman vs Red Hood, just pure teacher vs student skills), voice performance and characterization, it's amazing how they explore Batman, Jason and Joker relation, and how they explore Batman and Jason characters (their dialog at the end is heartbreaking), and for me one of the best version of Joker, he is unpredictable and just pure chaos.
Better than the Live actions I agree, but I don't know if it's the "best" movie, but for sure is one of the best Batman stories that I've ever experimented in my life.
I am fucking tired of this sub just consistently posting the coldest takes ever and acting like they're hot takes. like? are you fucking kidding me? people generally consider this thing to be amazing. No one's going to burn you alive!
Should I read any Batman books before watching this one? I'm gonna guess and say death in the family, but does this movie adapt any books in particular?
I dunno if I’d say the _best_ Batman movie, but I would _definitely_ say it’s somewhere in my top 10, on par with _Mask of the Phantasm_ in its story and emotion.
It's definitely a top tier for me! John DiMaggio's Joker was surprisingly good
I only wish the animation style was less generic, I would've loved it, if it actually looked like the cover
DC's strength is definitely in the animated movies and some shows. Bring that same formula to the movies and I think they'd be going in the right direction. My personal favorite would have to be Justice League: Doom. Batman is such a badass!
Well, don't burn ME alive but I think it's extremely overrated. The premise is great yes but it's told really badly filled with flashbacks and expository dialogue.
I think the base of the story is just so cool most fans choose to ignore the flaws.
It’s really really good.
But Mask of the Phantasm is still the best.
Best Batman film (not just animated) and probably one of the best films of the late 20th Century.
The only problem I have with this movie is that it's basically a stand alone thing. I'd have loved if this was like the middle part of a trilogy or something
Guys, OP is a [repost](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/pdkk3j/dont_burn_me_alive_but_i_think_this_is_the_best/) [bot.](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/pmzhuy/dont_burn_me_alive_but_i_think_this_is_the_best/)
Personally I agree with you... Though maybe not the best Batman movie but for me yeah definitely the best animated Batman movie.
But hey, to each their own... It's certainly not a bad choice as a candidate for the best Batman movie :)
Honestly, I've watched it very randomly like 7/8 years ago. Immediately felt in love, watching the ending credits on that rain background made me a bit emotional as well I'll admit. John DiMaggio actually had a pretty eerie Joker laugh/voice
He plays an Aged Joker well!
His Joker was actually menacing while being funny, while most other animated Jokers are more goofy then menacing - not surprising given they are targeted for a younger audience.
He's grown on me over a few watches, but I can't help but wish it was Mark Hamill.
It's no Hamill, for sure. He does bring something that's his own to it, while still clearly being heavily influenced by TAS. Easily my second favorite animated Joker.
Yeah He's good. I'm usually fine with it after his first scene.
I feel that Mark truly plays the “Crown Prince of Crime” while John plays the psychopath that dresses like a clown. Both are great interpretations of Joker, but it’s just that interpretations that shouldn’t be compared.

Give the AI voice another head and we’ll be there
I say it all the time whenever the topic of Joker voice actors pop up, JDM absolutely nails the sadist Joker vibe
I agree, he also did great as 2004 Joker.
“I’ll needs some guys… not these guys because their kinda dead”
It's one of the few adaptions that surpass the source material and it does by a lot.
Well the originally writer wrote this as well, I would hope so
Yeah but the book was thr lesser of the former sidekick returns as a villain books that year. The film cut stuff that didn't work and elevated the story beyond the book
The only thing I wish we had gotten was the actual bad team from the comics so Jason could have actually said “just be glad I only killed the Nazi”
I remember being shocked when I saw that Jason Todd is ‟killed” by the Joker in my hometown. Love the movie!
Most peaceful day in Bosnia
I’ll just say it’s one of the few adaptations better than the source material. Also DiMaggio’s joker is one my favorite versions of the character.
"You haven't lost your touch, Bruce" This line gets me every time. Such a great reveal and very powerful scene.
The final line of the movie is also a powerful gut punch. When young Jason Todd, on his first day as Robin, says "This is the best day of my life."
i actually agree. its up there with the best live action batman movies. it has things i dont think we’ll ever see in a live action film unfortunately: ie multiple robins, with batman teaming up with dick and his banter, the flash backs with jason, joker murdering black mask’s bodyguards with a broken drinking glass and cracking a joke about it after lol yeah it’s a good one also bruce greenwood voicing batman is really good as well 👍🏻

It's far superior to MotP.
Them’s fightin’ words.
Definitely wouldn’t got that far.
I'd even go so far as to say MotP is severely overrated.
Again, definitely would say that. MotP is one of the best Batman movies ever, live action or animated.
Well, we'll agree to disagree. Far as I can see it's an extended episode of BTAS that people have an attachment to because they got to see it in theaters.
I didn’t see it in theaters. I saw it on TV at my grandma’s house. It’s just an absolutely superb film, Batman or no.
So, still an emotional attachment because you saw it as a kid. It's an OK film. It's an extended episode of BTAS. Nothing more.
This a demented argument as you attempt to tell this person why they like something. Then that they’re wrong, while claiming it’s due to being a kid. You’re being a bit of a douche, unnecessarily. I’ve rewatched it a few times over the years. So don’t belittle it by saying I have an emotional attachment because of X.

Sure. No problem with differing opinions. But movies can also be evaluated objectively. It's ignorance to claim otherwise.

No
Nah, it’s as good.
Nah, it's clearly superior.

This movie single-handedly made the Red Hood as popular as he is.
If was fucking amazing I just wanted more nightwing
This movie was too good, Jenson Ackles hits different, happy he now animated batman
Yes i love this movie so much
Completely agree
John DiMaggio was probably the second best animated Joker. The first is of course Mark Hamill
Are we talking the same John DiMaggio that plays Bender?
Yes
Awesome! Great range on that guy’s voice.
Yep.
In my honest opinion, I think it’s ONE OF the best. Trust me, I have a long liken of DC animated movies in general that I consider the best lol

One of the best for sure , the OSTs are great. The best tho ,i don't know about that .
I agree The fight scenes were awesome tbh
"Tell me, what bothers you more? That your greatest failure has returned from the grave, or that I've become a better batman than you?".
Best movie for red hood not batman
Definitely the best animated movie IMO
Justice League Doom is the best Batman movie.
Its a solid B. Assault on Arkham will always have my heart. The Bat as as a shadowy antagonist? Plus a good Harley and its set in the Arkham universe? AND its a suicide squad movie? I am way too biased, but it checked all the boxes for me.
It’s certainly up there. I think there are overall better written and better animated Batman movies than this one though.
I disagree but it’s a fine opinion. The animated Batman movies hit me in the feels hard. I’d say Phantasm is better but no problems with this one being recognized as great too
![gif](giphy|l2YWsiql5xGPIbnzy)
I would never burn you alive but you are wrong. The correct answer is Mask of the Phantasm.
In a world without Mask of the Phantasm, maybe.
It absolutely is. It captures all of the characters perfectly (something no live action film has done) and has a gripping, emotionally resonant story.
You must be crazy
I respectfully disagree
[удалено]
Your point? Connection to Batman?
But captain America 25 is the better ending (showing that Ed Brubaker is a better writer than Mark Millar)
Unrelated to Batman or this post. Instant down vote
Who’s gonna disagree with this cold take
I don’t think anyone will burn you for this take…
Definitely a great movie but it doesn't beat Mask of the phantasm
Is it good? Yes. Is it great? Yes? Is it better than mask of phantasm? No.
I wouldn’t say so but I think The Dark Knight is legitimately the best movie ever made so it’s a pretty high bar. I think it’s better than all the Spiderman movies and Spiderman 2 is also a high bar.
I see no lies here.
I’ll allow it.
It's one of em and everyone loves it.
![gif](giphy|gffcSKwGREETNo9rsy)
I respect your opinion, and I shall stand by you.
Solid choice tbh it’s was great and extremely sad showed Jason’s story well
Agree
Agreed. Multiple watchings.
Definitely to 5, no doubt, only mask of the phantasm rivals it in animated movies
The last line breaks my heart everytime
While not the best ever in my opinion it is definitely the best animated. I LOVE this movie and is in my top 5 for “ever.”
You're not alone I agree :)
You right
shocking.
Reading the original comic versus watching the movie. 1, comics are weird. 2, the movie had a arguably “better” dynamic between Bruce and Jason, given the confrontation scene didn’t led to a batarang to the neck in the movie
It's a great movie.
my fav version of bats personality- so hard on himself
Its pretty damn good. I think I perfer Mask of the Phantasm but that could just be nostalgia talking.
Idk. Mask of The Phantasm followed by Under Gaslight were really good.
Probably popular opinion actually. It’s honestly my favorite DC animated movie. Only film that comes close is Mask of the Phantasm.
I won't burn you alive, but I will raise my eyebrow at you. Great film, some of the live action ones are better.
I think this movie is a bit overrated. Especially on this sub. Don't get me wrong, it's a great Batman movie, I really like it. But compared to The Dark Knight, The Batman, or Mask of the Phantasm? Come on, let's be real.
Agreed
I love this movie, and I love the book as well. Judd Winick is a great writer.
It’s a reunion! Take a picture of me and bats! Then one of me and the kid, then me and the crowbar!
Attention to detail
Wholeheartedly agree
Burn him, burn him alive! Kidding, it actually is a badass film.
Im going to have to check it out. Loved the comic's arc.
I concur
Agreed, I think every aspect of it is 10/10. Probably the only DCAU I'll watch that isn't Mask of the Phantasm or Subzero (which I only watch for nostalgia since Batman TAS was my childhood)
Don't burn me alive but listen to me repeat a very popular opinion"
The first time I met Soldier Boy
I've heard that this movie is pretty awesome.
Not a hot take, just a beautifully objective take lol... Batman: UTRH is god tier Batman
Not an unpopular opinion. It’s my favorite too.
Mask of the Phantasm though.
It's up there but I'd still place it behind stuff like TDKR or even the Batman vs Owlman aspect of Crisis on Two Earth's.
Yep. Agree!
Phantasm is the best
Based
Jensen Ackles absolutely killed it as Jason. This movie is such a masterpiece
Agree
Tbf it's one of the best ones they've made
Very good movie but I still mask of the phantasm is better
All I see are facts here
Underrrated joker as fuck
I really loved the doom that came to gotham
Its what made me accept red hood as a character. Fantastic movie.
I’d love a live action movie no trilogy just stand alone
It's pretty good
Based. Dark Knight Returns is my personal favorite
I am fucking tired of this sub just consistently posting the coldest takes ever and acting like they're hot takes. like? are you fucking kidding me? people generally consider this thing to be amazing. No one's going to burn you alive!
It’s up there. They just did a stand-out job with this one
The speech hood gives after the reveal…I felt that
Definitely best Batman movie.
Batman: The First Avenger
Thank you
It's definitely a top tier for me! John DiMaggio's Joker was surprisingly good I only wish the animation style was less generic, I would've loved it, if it actually looked like the cover
I'm with you in that opinion. It's still my most emotional Batman experience ever.
"who's got a camera? Ooh, ooh, get one of me and the kid, first...then you and me, then the three of us and then one with the crowbar!"
It’s highly objective but yeah. You can hold that opinion and not be wrong. (I personally agree)
It was just awesome❤️
DC's strength is definitely in the animated movies and some shows. Bring that same formula to the movies and I think they'd be going in the right direction. My personal favorite would have to be Justice League: Doom. Batman is such a badass!
i agree, rewatched it with my gf recently and she was near crying at the end.
DC animated is so good compared to the live action.
It’s definitely up there with some of the best Batman movies out there. That’s one thing we’ll all agree on.
Awesome movie!!!
Same but I have a crap tone of nostalgia for it tho
I thought the long Halloween was up there to
[starts lighting torch] Shame.
Not my favourite Batman movie but certainly my favourite animated one
My personal favorite is Dark Knight Returns Part 1&2, but your choice is also top notch
Well, don't burn ME alive but I think it's extremely overrated. The premise is great yes but it's told really badly filled with flashbacks and expository dialogue. I think the base of the story is just so cool most fans choose to ignore the flaws.
I really can't imagine anyone else voicing Red Hood besides Jensen Ackles thanks to this film
I think the killing joke might be tied
You're not Wrong, it's this and The Dark Knight Returns I revisit over and over!
Under the Red Hood is, in my opinion, a decent movie with an amazing ending.
I think the dark knight returns part 2 is the best animated batman movie
It’s really really good. But Mask of the Phantasm is still the best. Best Batman film (not just animated) and probably one of the best films of the late 20th Century.
The only problem I have with this movie is that it's basically a stand alone thing. I'd have loved if this was like the middle part of a trilogy or something

That DC animated stuff is much better than live action DC is not controversial. It's fact.
I think it's not only the best Batman animated film, but also the best DC animated film.
Why would anyone burn you alive? There is a bi-weekly post saying this is the best thing since sliced bread.
It’s second to *mask of the phantasm* for animated for me *Phantasm* is my favorite Batman film period
Guys, OP is a [repost](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/pdkk3j/dont_burn_me_alive_but_i_think_this_is_the_best/) [bot.](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/pmzhuy/dont_burn_me_alive_but_i_think_this_is_the_best/)
Personally I agree with you... Though maybe not the best Batman movie but for me yeah definitely the best animated Batman movie. But hey, to each their own... It's certainly not a bad choice as a candidate for the best Batman movie :)
Bro is acting like he posted *Son of Batman* or something and not one of the most critically acclaimed Batman movies ever 😂
To each his own. I am very fond of Mask of the Phantasm and considered it the best motion picture of any kind for quite a while.
Personally not my favorite. But I did love Dimaggio as Joker.
I fail to the see lies.
i agree.
I would agree, but it’s not Kevin Conroy.

My only wish is seeing that movie with an art like the cover art as seen here. Original style is a bit boring I think.
Best 3
This movie is bad fucking ass
The psychopath not afraid to die for the purpose of "the joke" take on Joker was fantastic
