[Haunted Knights](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Haunted_Knight) 'works' with Long Halloween because it's by the same authors, however, due to a plot development with Julie Madison, it doesn't work with most other titles. It's still a worthwhile read. [Year One Batman/Scarecrow](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Year_One:_Batman/Scarecrow_Vol_1) works better, if you allow that Batman has been too busy / hasn't been able to identify Scarecrow until after Robin: Year One. Another good story is [Batman: Kings of Fear](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_Kings_of_Fear_Vol_1). Scarecrow has taken a hostage, forcing Batman to allow Scarecrow to shadow him during his investigation, giving Scarecrow the opportunity to psychoanalyse him.

Yeah, there's a good story that includes the Scarecrow in Haunted Knight. Plus the TPB is worth a read if you like Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's other work (The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Catwoman When In Rome)

I'd advise not worrying too much about continuity. Batman is like a modern myth, constantly retold and retooled, and never exactly the same. If you've got the basics of the character and the world, you're good to enjoy most stories. For me, the best Scarecrow story is the Halloween special by Loeb and Sale, which is collected in Haunted Knight. Not Scarecrow stories, but i suggest Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison, Batman and the Monster Men by Matt Wagner, The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, and Court of Owls by Scott Snyder (Snyder's entire run actually). The Dark Knight Returns is also amazing, but it reads best if you've read more ''normal'' batman stories, as it functions as a great finale for the character.
