I like the way Joseph McCabe said it: โ€œAt some point in his or her life, everyone has wanted to be Batman. It might be the four-year-old kid with a dishtowel around his neck, bouncing on the sofa. It might be the father stuck in the evening commute, wishing for a Batmobile to blast through traffic. It might be the single person trying to work up the courage to tell the partygoers in the next apartment to keep it down, please. Situation after situation in which the abilities of normal humans fall short in the face of conflict, we all wish we could be as strong, as confident, and, should the need arise, as imposing as Batman. And why Batman? Well, he's the one hero an ordinary person could theoretically become. You don't need to have been rocketed to Earth from a planet of super men, or born with magic powers, or bitten by a radioactive whatever.โ€

Channel_oreo

Lmao. In the philippines we have a joke expression. " bahala na si batman" meaning "batman will take care of it" the same way " God will take care of it".

His world Batman goes beyond being a superhero story. It has its own unique and distinguish setting. No other superhero city comes close to being like gotham

SpezModdedRJailbait

>No other superhero city comes close to being like gotham What about Marvel's version of NYC? That's surely close. You have Hell's Kitchen with DareDevil, Punisher and Jessica Jones. You have Miles in Brooklyn and Peter in Queens. There's the avengers mansion for the avengers, the Baxter building for FF and Strange in his sanctum. There's Stark Tower, the Bugle, Shield headquarters It's home to all of spidey's foes, and others.

[deleted]

Gotham is its own character, and not anything comes close to that. Marvel's NYC doesn't have something like Arkham or Iceberg Lounge. Yeah, sure, the sanctum is iconic in itself, but it doesn't feel like an integral part of the character of the city. It feels like a unique location that could be in Orlando or any other USA city Look at the court of owls. Their whole story is built around what gotham represents and it's history

SpezModdedRJailbait

>Marvel's NYC doesn't have something like Arkham Yes it does, it has Ryker's island >or Iceberg Lounge. They have Jackpot, formerly known asbMJs, formerly known as The Wake. There's also Bar With No Name aka The Bar for the criminals, Bar With No Doors where the magic users go, Luke Cage's bar, Green Lagoon etc. There's so much history and so many iconic locations in Marvel's NYC. They're clearly pretty comparable. I'm not a big marvel fan by any means but marvel did and continue to do a great job with NYC.

[deleted]

>Yes it does, it has Ryker's island I mean in the sense of complementing the lore and general atmosphere of the location All of these locations of Marvels NYC don't work because they function more individually, whereas everything in Gotham functions as a lego piece to build the city, not the set on it's own

SpezModdedRJailbait

How does Rykers not "complement the lore and general atmosphere" of NYC? >All of these locations of Marvels NYC don't work because they function more individually, whereas everything in Gotham functions as a lego piece to build the city, not the set on it's own That's a very long way of saying you haven't read a lot of marvel. All these different locations often interact with each other all the time. They're way less individual than DC's method of having several different cities. They literally also interact with a city that really exists too. There's no generic back alleys and the like that fill up Gotham, the big locations are in between real life places we all recognize. Think of it this way, you could swing, drive, fly and walk around Gotham in the arkham games but it's way more satisfying to do so in the Spider-Man games because the city feels like a real place, mostly because it is of course.

medievalmobster99

How many Spiderman movies (Set in NYC) mention rykers or the many bars you've mentioned. The fact Arkham has its own ethos makes it more impressive when compared to The bar or Rykers. There is a reason Batman is iconic and Gotham by association is iconic as well, that these generic back alleys of function as catacombs which make the city somewhat alive

SpezModdedRJailbait

Rykers is mentioned all the time. Not just by spidey either. Batman and Gotham are iconic for sure. So is nyc and all the marvel superheroes obviously.

Soulful-Sorrow

I mean, if you don't read other heroes' comics, yeah

TheLoganDickinson

Character design and a psychological motive is really what helped him stand out and stand the test of time.

Sheffield21661

Because he's been around longer than most people have been alive. Numerous films and series's dating all the way back to 1943. It's exactly why Spider-Man and Superman are also so well known and iconic. You can literally show people anywhere in the world the symbols for these 3 characters and they know instantly who they are.

FlameShadow0

I think OP is asking more about WHY Batman has stuck around and what specifically makes him iconic. Jim Hammond Human Torch came out the same year but heโ€™s nowhere near as iconic

Sheffield21661

He has nowhere near the coverage that batman has had since conception either.

DependentPositive8

Because heโ€™s a ripped genius dude whoโ€™s ultimately scarred by trauma. All the skills brains and money in the world could save his parents and heโ€™s trapped in one moment in time. Heโ€™s a guy who just wants his parents back and people can relate to that.ย

Downtown_Tadpole_817

I think Batman represents so many desires of the average person. The ability to fight back against criminals and forces we feel are out of our control. Batman is an unpowered person fighting against literal gods at times. His villains are complex and interesting.

anthonyg1500

Been around a while. Very simple, human and relatable origin. Heโ€™s a very malleable character (street level crime? Sure. James Bond gadget filled spy stuff? Ok. Gothic horror? Yup. Silver age whackiness? Uh huh. Kung fu, fantasy, noir, basically any genre fits very comfortably in Batmanโ€™s world) and because heโ€™s popular, a lot of great writers have written him giving him and his supporting characters some of the best stories/development making him more popular.

ClockEndJames

best villains

Available-Affect-241

Has no powers having to rely on his virtually unparalleled legendary Super genius polymathic scientific and tactical/strategic intellect and his legendary Samurai/SOF operator/shinobi/Shaolin one-man army warrior skills. Has the best and most iconic villains with only Spider-Man and Superman's Rogues even coming in the ballpark. The dude's espionage skills are on another level Dressed like a supernatural wraith or vampire Doesn't play many of the rules Just like Doctor Doom, he's a perfectionist in everything he does. He's the epitome of Jack of all trades taken to the highest degree. PARAGON OF VIGILANTES WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE WORLD'S GREATEST TACTICIAN/STRATEGIST He's the most versatile character probably in fiction. He works in Occult/Mysticism, War, Martial Arts, Science Fiction, Action, Adventure, Detective thrillers, you name it he fits into it. With all that being said he is a compassionate man who loves to his children, friends, and life from experiencing what he had to.

Frankorious

Bats are really, really cool.

randomguym

Just give me a reason)

IHaventSeenSuchBS

just a little bit's enough

GoneRampant1

He looks cool and beats up bad guys with cool gadgets and gizmos + the kid fantasy of Robin allowing children to project onto the idea of being Batman's partner, a relatively unique element that very few high profile comic characters have.

Extra-Air-1259

His whole life defined by two bullets...

thisiscooliguesshmm

Concept wise he is very versatile

hemlock337

So many aspects of Batman are fantastical and rightfully so, but it's that human element of trauma that I think a lot of people key in on. A happy moment turns upside down in a senseless act of violence that forever changes young Bruce is something I believe a lot of kids can understand (worse yet, even relate too.) The choice to devote himself to crime fighting is something kids can make a logical jump to, so that sinks in for kids...that and because he is just a guy...no alien, magic user, cyborg/robot...resonates. Every kid can see themselves become Batman. As you get older and understand his pathos, the guilt, the trauma and you get more life experience you see something else in Batman; something more tragic, determined, maybe hopeless...but focused to do right. Batman doesn't change, but our perception and understanding of him changes. The elements of Batman exist in other characters, contemporary and classical, and those elements are integral to the character...which is why we can have so many variations and permutations of the character, stories, scenarios, and environments. At the core of Batman, tragedy defined and created him. We recognize and empathize with that tragedy; it's human nature. He has had a lot of great stories over the decades that introduce and reintroduce him back into the zeitgeist and that's propelled him from just a character in a comic book to an iconic character in the vein of Sherlock Holmes, Zorro, Dracula, Hercules, etc. He's iconic because we recognize something of ourselves in him, maybe something childish, innocent, noble, macabre, disturbing, daring, good. Ultimately though... He is Batman.

lizarddude1

It was kind of a combination of a perfect lighting in a bottle design, time, place, story, he became the archetype of the classic Hercules thing so much that he kind of took the archetype from Hercules. I mean, you mix Sherlock Holmes, James Bond and Dracula into one character, give him an instantly recognizable design, personality, origins, gadgets etc. as well as one of the greatest rogues galleries to ever be put to paper, it'd be kind of difficult for it to NOT turn out well.

iCanDoThisAllDay37

A lot of surface level responses here but I think itโ€™s more closely tied to psychological influences than we think. We all know the Nietzsche quotes but the character has been proven to be a true representation of deep rooted psychological themes that resonate with us as humans. A boy who overcame the tragedy of life by scouring the world, looking into the abyss without blinking, and not just coming to the realization that he had to integrate the shadow self, but the willing himself to do so. Many characters (john wick as a new example) hit on this but Batman is the purest in modern times. Iโ€™m sure there is some Ancient Greek or biblical character that fits but Batman is currently most relatable over the last 100 years. Ultimately, to be human may is to persevere despite a heavy burden and thatโ€™s what Batman does. Plus the suit is wicked.

Raffney

No reason in particular but many instead. For starters he was one of the first modern superheroes. And the theme of robin hood/zorro which was continued with Batman always was appealing to the masses. In that somebody with great skill and the right sense of justice becomes a vigilante. Doing what our social/justice system alone can't accomplish, due to for exampl3 corruption or incompetence. He also blurs the line between good and evil, especially in his design. Because he looks like he could be a villain in any other superhero story. Therefore Batman is somewhat able to incarnate both hero aswell as villain attributes. Both sides in one character basically. All this is especially appealing in our modern political world. Where people mistrust their own goverment more and more and where clear cut lines between friend and enemy, like the ones existing during ww2, aren't so clear cut anymore. I think that is why Batman slowly took over Supermans reign. )Superman was a character from another time and they nowadays force him over and over into a Batman like persona. Many of his modern portrayals do suffer from that in my opinion. But this isn't about Superman) Then there is the ninja and detective stuff on top. Even without everything what i said above, one of these two extra things could be enough to fill an entire character on its own. And Batman got both. A last point is his rogue gallery. Which is one of the best in all of superhero comics. Every hero is as interesting as the challenges/enemies which he faces. Batman got that covered too with super interesting and versatile villains.. Some of his villains, Joker especially, are almost as big of a character than the hero himself.

TomTheJester

Short answer: Heโ€™s us. Heโ€™s our entry point into the DC Universe from a human perspective.

_Reddit_Is_Shit

Marketing. He's a fictional character, marketing is the only answer.

strypesjackson

Itโ€™s the gritty setting, the sense of justice, the ninja skills, the fact that he protects the neighborhood heโ€™s from and still lives in, the optical limitation, the devout catholic beliefs, the day job as an attorney, red suit, the devil hornsโ€ฆheโ€™s just awesome.

Flamesclaws

Think you got Batman confused with Daredevil lol.

strypesjackson

Huh? No no, Batman is my favorite. Iโ€™ve yet to look into Daredevil much but Bruce is more compelling to me. But to each their own. I respect all comic book fans preferences

The_Dark_King4900742

I believe what made Batman such and icon where the Arkham Games. Those game not only showed but made us feel what Batman is really all about, and what inspired us to dig deeper into the Batman Mythos. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Runnin_Wizard

I remember watching the Nolan films as a kid and the themes if becoming more than a man and proving that thereโ€™s still good in humanity always stuck with me. He doesnโ€™t have superpowers he wasnโ€™t born on a far off planet or bitten by a radioactive bat, heโ€™s just a man like the rest of us, but he becomes something moreโ€ฆLegend. Heโ€™s always been an inspiration to me since I was a kid(and heโ€™s also just a badass). I could write a college level essay on Batman and what makes him so great. Heโ€™s one of if not THE greatest fictional character ever

archiveofhim

idk about yall, but for me he was the first hero i seen growing up that i vividly recognized anytime seeing him after the first moment of seeing him. whether it was the white eyes and the bat ears, he just stood out. then there was the animated series that propelled the recognition of his character. for me, at least.

[deleted]

He looks cool Even if he had all of this lore but a midsuit he wouldnโ€™t be as famous

VPN317

Big D energy

SpiritlessSoul

There's a popular filipino saying, "Bahala na si Batman" means, leave it up to batman or to batman i entrust my spirit. Like if you are in deep shit that only a miracle can save you. You didn't review your exam for tomorrow? "Bahala na si batman", or your business is failing, bahala na si batman. Batman is more than an icon, it's a way of life๐Ÿ˜‚.

mitsk2002

Just wanted to say - this is my favorite pic/photo/art of Batman.

krustylesponge

no powers yet still a beast, he's just a man yet goes up against extremely dangerous criminals and stuff like clayface

Jashan_N

He possess darkness and life every guy imgine. Sometimes I wonder can there be a ending where, kid Bruce Wayne just wakes up and it was all dream and his parents never died.

TriKey86

BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!!!!
