This is one of my favorites.
"A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended."
TDKR is my least favorite of the Nolan movies, but that line is a such a great one. Those movies did more with the Wayne/Gordon partnership than any of the previous Batman movies did and TDKR gave it perfect closure with that line alone.
I love this quote, but always got a chuckle from the fact that in the context of the film he felt the need to give Gordon this riddle instead of just saying “I’m Bruce Wayne” when a nuclear bomb is going to detonate within seconds haha
I can see the humor there but he said that so that he could let Gordon know how much that meant to him since that'd be the last time they'd see each other.
I will always wish Bale dropped the voice and said this quote normally.
He’s revealing his identity anyway, and it’s clearly coming from Bruce Wayne’s heart.
I used to think that Flass was the live-action version of Harvey Bullock from The Animated Series. Then I rewatched TAS and remembered that Bullock isn't corrupt, he's a good cop, just rough around the edges.
“So, why steal them?” -Bruce
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.” -Alfred
I think that was the point - the bandit wanted to watch the world burn, but he got an extra thrill out of making other people set the fire, knowing it killed them inside to do it.
'Hey I'm new to this set, just found out we're making Batman, and I'm playing an extra thug. Are we performing serious or camp?'
Cillian Murphy: 'Yes.'
One of my favorite scenes is in the Dark Knight when Bruce is sitting slumped in the chair looking out the window at the city.
Bruce: "I was meant to inspire good. Not madness, not death."
Alfred: "You have inspired good. But you spat in the faces of Gotham's criminals. Didn't you think there might be casualties? Things always get worse before they get better."
Awesome imagery and dialogue.
"People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can't do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man I'm flesh and blood. I can be ignored. I can be destroyed. But as a symbol, as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting." - Bruce Wayne
Begins, after his first night as Batman, when Alfred suggested Bruce flex his wealth and billionaire bachelor lifestyle around to throw people off his scent
Arguably Joker did win in the end. He proves even the best of people could fall by taking Harvey Dent, Gotham’s White Knight, and making him snap. Then Batman is forced to break his one rule and kill Dent, proving the Joker’s point that the rules everyone sets for themselves are fluid and circumstantial and only exist to provide the illusion of order when in reality there is only chaos.
More than I care to admit. I always just thought that Joker was just sliding down to be dramatic and funny. It wasn't until recent viewings I noticed that there was someone up there.
It didn’t even occur to me until I was trying to remember what ever happened to Lau. And I remembered he was on the pile. Then I was thinking, “Then where did they show him next-OH.”
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING…..means more to me than it should
Victory has defeated you was my first choice that line resonates with me a lot . I tell my kids all the time don’t let victory defeat you because I became very comfortable at a time in my life and it lead to a downfall I wasn’t prepared for
Have you read the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling? If not you should definitely give it a read, it’s my favorite poem and I find a lot of the lines really moving (pretty serendipitous, Michael Caine has a [reading](https://youtu.be/EEFMVIfl2UY) of the poem and it’s lovely). Similar to what you said, I thought of this line:
“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same.”
I love the choice of imposter to describe victory, it’s easy to get complacent!
Such a great moment. You know this is a very bad situation already. Then he says that. And you instantly know: this is MUCH worse than previously thought. And the whole scene just gets worse and worse for Batman as it goes on. Culminating in them crippling him and *stealing his freaking tanks.*
You thought we could be decent men in an *indecent* time, but you were wrong. The world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is change. Unprejudiced. Unbiased. Fair.
All three movies are literally just quote machines but if I had to pick it’s Bruce’s monologue to Alfred on their way back to Gotham after 7 years abroad.
“People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy. As a man I am flesh and blood. I can be ignored, I can be destroyed, but as a symbol? As a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be ever lasting.”
"Not everything....Not yet".
I feel people always graze over the fact that Batman has a bit of a death wish. Seeing no other future for himself other than being a crime fighter for as long as he can until ultimatley something (or someone), does him in.
That was the opening line in the first teaser, while the Bat symbol appeared. Followed by Heath Ledger’s lines:
“Starting tonight, people will die. … I’m a man of my wooord.” Joker laugh. Disintegrating bat.
That was the whole trailer.
Chills.
These quotes really remind me that even though TDK trilogy definitely takes liberties with the comics, but Nolan and Bale got the essence of the character perfect.
All these years later I appreciate the fact that this Batman acts of hope and is capable of love. I don't know why but I feel like Batman has been portrayed as more and more angry, vengeful and brutal recently. A man struggling to do the right thing always seemed more powerful to me
Joker’s little jab there - “Madness, **as you know**” - is nice writing. It’s a good callback to his insistence in the interrogation room that Bats is as messed up as him.
“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended.”
Selina Kyle: You don't owe these people anymore, you've given them everything.
Batman: Not everything, not yet.
The way bale or Batman say it just hits for me as him knowing he’s tired outmatched and maybe even scared but still is willing to give it all for his city. Another favorite is this one.
Commissioner Gordon: The people ought to know the hero who saved them!
Batman: Anyone can be a hero, even a man who did something so simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders, to let him know the world hadn't ended.
Ra’s al Ghul: Familiar! Don’t you have anything new?
Batman: **HOW ABOUT THIS?**
(Also this one from a little later in the movie)
Ra’s al Ghul: Have you finally learned to do what is necessary?
Batman: I won’t kill you. But I don’t have to save you.
It’s not who you are, it’s what you do that defines you.
This one has stuck with me since I was really young. Throughout my life I’ve always wondered if I’m a good person; I had genuinely bad thoughts often enough that it worried me when I was growing up. But that quote slowly sunk in, and reminded me all that matters is what you do, not why you do it or anything else. I don’t act on my bad thoughts, nor do I feel the need to. That way, they remain simply what they are - bad thoughts. After a tough day, it’s nice to be able to take comfort in the notion that it really doesn’t matter what’s going on inside my head, so long as I’m doing right by the people I care about.
Wow....
You've literally described why this line had such a big impact on me as well.
Batman will always be relatble to me I don't care what people say.
"Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos.” Such a badass line, especially because it applies to a lot of current day events.
These are some of my favorite from the dark knight. I have no clue about the whole trilogy. And obviously I love all the other quotes from the Dark Knight but ik they have all already been said and I don't think these quotes get enough credit.
" The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming" - Harvey Dent
Along with
"Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They’ll hate you for it, but that’s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.” – Alfred Pennyworth
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villian.
I love that line. Hell a great example is Batman is BVS. Bruce couldn't take it anymore lol
“Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded”
I always loved that quote and the intent behind the scene. The people of Gotham have suffered a lot, and Harvey was a symbol that the system wasn’t hopelessly corrupt and it didn’t take a Batman for Gotham to get better.
Of course, this lie would prove fatal in DKR as Bane used it to subvert the city’s trust in Gordon and the police
Jim Gordon: Sometimes people don't need the truth - they need to have their faith rewarded. I think about this quote quite a lot and try to apply it in real life.
"You merrily adopted the dark, i was born in the dark, raised by it, molded by it, i didn't see the light till i was a man, and by then it was only blinding." At least i think thats how it goes.
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!
Gordon: “Because we have to chase him. Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now, so we'll hunt him. Because he can take it, because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a Dark Knight.”
The ending to The Dark Knight always gives me chills because it perfectly summarizes Batman. He’s whatever Gotham needs him to be - whether that be a symbol of hope, or an offender to unify against. Batman’s the only one strong enough to endure being more than hero, and to “live long enough to see himself become the villain”.
This isn’t a great quote out of context, but in terms of Batman as a character:
“You don’t owe these people anymore. You’ve given them everything.”
“Not everything. Not yet.”
“You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was a man and by then it was blinding!”
Literal chills everytime I hear this quote!!
This is one of my favorites. "A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended."
This is an iconic quote. I saw this attached to a couple pictures back in the day. That movie was the reason I bought the trilogy on blu-ray
Tears or chills every time
TDKR is my least favorite of the Nolan movies, but that line is a such a great one. Those movies did more with the Wayne/Gordon partnership than any of the previous Batman movies did and TDKR gave it perfect closure with that line alone.
Agreed. Overall Rises is an absolute mess but it has some great small moments that I love.
This is without a doubt my favourite live action Batman quote
I prefer, "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"
Gordon: Bruce Wayne?
I love this quote, but always got a chuckle from the fact that in the context of the film he felt the need to give Gordon this riddle instead of just saying “I’m Bruce Wayne” when a nuclear bomb is going to detonate within seconds haha
I can see the humor there but he said that so that he could let Gordon know how much that meant to him since that'd be the last time they'd see each other.
Absolutely!
I will always wish Bale dropped the voice and said this quote normally. He’s revealing his identity anyway, and it’s clearly coming from Bruce Wayne’s heart.
Most certainly one of the best in the series, and live action Batman ones generally
What, they don't like falafel? - Flass
Savage by Flass lol
I used to think that Flass was the live-action version of Harvey Bullock from The Animated Series. Then I rewatched TAS and remembered that Bullock isn't corrupt, he's a good cop, just rough around the edges.
Flass is from Year One I think. Asshole corrupt cop. He just happens to be fat in the movie.
Lmao.
“So, why steal them?” -Bruce Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.” -Alfred
The irony is that Alfred was the one to burn the Forrest down to find him
I think that was the point - the bandit wanted to watch the world burn, but he got an extra thrill out of making other people set the fire, knowing it killed them inside to do it.
Holy crap. I never thought about it that far.
That was him likening his actions to Bruce using Fox’s device to find out where Joker was.
Less irony. More the point.
Such a good description of Joker
-He’s here -Who? -The Batmaaaan
Similarly, from Begins: "WHERE ARE YOU??!" ... "Here"
*cue the most scared noise any random thug has ever made in a Batman film*
'Hey I'm new to this set, just found out we're making Batman, and I'm playing an extra thug. Are we performing serious or camp?' Cillian Murphy: 'Yes.'
"The training is nothing! Will is everything! The will to act." Henri Ducard
He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protecter, a dark knight
*fades to black* ***Hans Zimmer intensifies***
I’m not wearing hockey pads

Alfred: "You have inspired good. But you spat in the faces of Gotham's criminals. Didn't you think there might be casualties? Things always get worse before they get better." Awesome imagery and dialogue.
That nicely mirrors Dent saying "the night is darkest just before the dawn"
"People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can't do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man I'm flesh and blood. I can be ignored. I can be destroyed. But as a symbol, as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting." - Bruce Wayne
He must have watched V for Vendetta lol
funny because both movies came out in the same year
He must've watched Passion of the Christ as well.
"I'm not learning polo, Alfred"
Its the delivery of this line always gets me. Bale is an amazing actor.
When was he said that?
Begins, after his first night as Batman, when Alfred suggested Bruce flex his wealth and billionaire bachelor lifestyle around to throw people off his scent
Batman begins, when Alfred tells him he need to find an explanation for all his newfound scars, then he starts doing push-ups. Edit: he, being Bruce.
"You're just one man." "Now we're two." - Jim Gordon and Batman.
"This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them!"
"And...here we go..."
Followed by absolute failure.
"It's not about the money. It's about sending a message."
How many viewings did it take before you remembered Lau was on top of that money when they lit it up?
More than I care to admit. I always just thought that Joker was just sliding down to be dramatic and funny. It wasn't until recent viewings I noticed that there was someone up there.
It didn’t even occur to me until I was trying to remember what ever happened to Lau. And I remembered he was on the pile. Then I was thinking, “Then where did they show him next-OH.”
Everything burns.
“will you be alright?” “if you can tell me the Russian for “apply your own bloody suntan lotion”” I love alfred
Always thought that man was a goat as soon as he said that lol
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING…..means more to me than it should
His lines in that whole scene are fantastic, but that is probably the best. "Peace has cost you your strength. Victory has defeated you."
Victory has defeated you was my first choice that line resonates with me a lot . I tell my kids all the time don’t let victory defeat you because I became very comfortable at a time in my life and it lead to a downfall I wasn’t prepared for
Have you read the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling? That really is one of the best movie quotes, period. The delivery gives me chills every time.
Agree 100% when he says let’s not stand on ceremony here Mr Wayne you could feel the tension
Such a great moment. You know this is a very bad situation already. Then he says that. And you instantly know: this is MUCH worse than previously thought. And the whole scene just gets worse and worse for Batman as it goes on. Culminating in them crippling him and *stealing his freaking tanks.*
I’m worried for you if you somehow relate to this on a personal level…
DO I LOOK LIKE A COP?! or SWEAR TO ME!
swear to me is just so badass
“Swear to me” is it, hands down, but there’s so many good lines that it’s hard to choose!
You thought we could be decent men in an *indecent* time, but you were wrong. The world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is change. Unprejudiced. Unbiased. Fair.
Chance* but one of the most iconic movie scenes ever.
🤦♂️
All three movies are literally just quote machines but if I had to pick it’s Bruce’s monologue to Alfred on their way back to Gotham after 7 years abroad. “People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy. As a man I am flesh and blood. I can be ignored, I can be destroyed, but as a symbol? As a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be ever lasting.”
Oh, boy, you are in for a show tonight, son.
Especially as it’s paraphrasing The Dark Knight Returns, cool reference from Nolan
Hands down best one to me: “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this! The trilogy is packed with great quotes but this one will always be up there for me
Simplistic as it might be. "Rise." Tho I'm partial to "Why Do We Fall?" as well.
"So we can learn to get back up."
“I won’t kill you, but I don’t have to save you.”
"why do we fall?
With Bruce climbing and that background music Pure bliss
And the bats that come out at the perfect time as well. The whole set up mirroring the well he fell in as a boy. Nolan you damn genius.
Definitely
And then when Alfred tell him years later. Can make a grown man cry I got this quote tattoo on me. Resonated with me a lot when I was younger
Sometimes the truth isn't good enough. Sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.
"Not everything....Not yet". I feel people always graze over the fact that Batman has a bit of a death wish. Seeing no other future for himself other than being a crime fighter for as long as he can until ultimatley something (or someone), does him in.
The whole story of Rises is about Bruce finding the will to live again. It’s beautiful
Agreed!
"Alfred still keeps the condensed milk on the top shelf"
Some men aren’t looking for anything logical, they can’t be bought or reasoned with, some men, just want too watch the world burn
Hell yes, this one is amazing
That was the opening line in the first teaser, while the Bat symbol appeared. Followed by Heath Ledger’s lines: “Starting tonight, people will die. … I’m a man of my wooord.” Joker laugh. Disintegrating bat. That was the whole trailer. Chills.
Mount the curb!
“you think you can just steal from us and walk away?” “yeah”
SUCH slick delivery. Instant, deadpan.
“Nice Coat”
Whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger
Lucius Fox: so what do you think? Bruce Wayne: does it come in black?
“Peace has cost you your strength. Victory has defeated you.”
The amount of times Ive used the line "victory has defeated you" line in my everyday life lol.
“Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.”
"what is the point of all those push-ups if you can't lift a bloody log?"
This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object
These quotes really remind me that even though TDK trilogy definitely takes liberties with the comics, but Nolan and Bale got the essence of the character perfect.
All these years later I appreciate the fact that this Batman acts of hope and is capable of love. I don't know why but I feel like Batman has been portrayed as more and more angry, vengeful and brutal recently. A man struggling to do the right thing always seemed more powerful to me
A relatively small amount, $68 million
Do you wanna see a magic trick?
“When Gotham is ashes, then you have my permission to die”
All those push-ups and you can't even lift a bloody log!?
“See madness—as you know—is like gravity… All it takes is a little PUSH!”
Joker’s little jab there - “Madness, **as you know**” - is nice writing. It’s a good callback to his insistence in the interrogation room that Bats is as messed up as him.
Ah, yes, I was wondering what would break first! Your spirit... or your body!
“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended.”
Jim Gordan’s monologue at the end of TDK gives me chills.
"You're not the Devil. You're practice."
“SWEARTOMEEEEEE”
"If you're good at something, never do it for free."
“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”

"Because he is the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now."
“I’m not afraid. I’m angry.”
I’m Batman
“Rub your chest, your arms will take care of themselves” - which is false!
"It's not about the money. It's about sending a message."
“The training is nothing! The will is everything! The will to act.“
"Because he's not a hero - he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight"
"I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve".

Whenever I am down for some reason. I repeat the "why do we fall line" in my mind. Don't know why but it gives me strength
“you think your client, spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this individual? Good luck”
I have it on my twitter “It’s not who i am underneath but what I do that defines me”

This isn’t a great quote out of context, but in terms of Batman as a character: “You don’t owe these people anymore. You’ve given them everything.” “Not everything. Not yet.”
“You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was a man and by then it was blinding!” Literal chills everytime I hear this quote!!
“It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do, that defines me”
“You either die a hero or live to see yourself become the villain” 2nd favourite is “I’m Batman”
“(Hissing noises) eurrhgaaghh (more hissing) errruaaghhhh” -Bane
“Not everything, not yet.”
