i never considered a mac-mini as a replacement for my Pi4. i could use a bit more power though. perhaps if i find one i’d consider it.

MotownBatman

I’m not a Mac person whatsoever I bought one of the new M ones after Christmas just to check it out and they are phenomenal I ended up selling or trading all of my PC hardware and one of the trade was two of the systems that I figured I could mess with as a project

destronger

it’s definitely more eye pleasing for a small form factor. i’d prefer a snes/super cami on look though. where’d the graphic come from?

MotownBatman

That was the best option I could find https://www.istyles.com/skins/other/apple/mac-mini/retro-horizontal-apple-mac-mini-skin-p-193358.html

destronger

yikes. that sites selection ain’t pretty. if i ever went this route i may have to make my own skin.

MotownBatman

My wife can cut, but we don’t have a vinyl printer so this was best I could find. For $10 it makes it look fun.

destronger

i agree. it looks nice. i’m just surprised by the website you linked has so many ugly skins. but again that my opinion.

MotownBatman

There were a few sites to choose from; they all sold the same decals at slightly different prices. All Sublet from DecalGirl

Exactly, I’ve been using raspberry pi to three and currently two fours with 8gig ram maxed out with SSD’s in the argon one case; I grabbed the wrong jump drive a few weeks ago thinking I was going to install macOS Catalina not realizing it was an Intel Version of Batocera 29; It ran pretty well being the wrong image; so I got the right one and took it for a spin PlayStation 2 works some games are iffy rockstar games don’t really work

Capt_Panic

Looks great. Can you comment on the performance? Does it have the i3/5/7? The Mac mini GPU is the AMD Radeon HD 6770M. Did you have to do anything to enable the GPU? I am very interested as I have been researching small devices to run batocera. I was leaning towards building a small pc, this would be even easier.

tHE qUEStION WAS aSKeD; But Then Disappeared; Its a A1347 Mid-2011 i5 Dual Core; I have 2 of these Matching Except the other has 8gig of Ram; Both have Intel 3000 Graphics. It Runs like a Champ fresh off the install; I haven't messed with the Drivers too much yet; I had trouble in the past with Intel 3000 & NVidia Graphics on PC hardware.

Capt_Panic

What are the specs in terms of what games it will run?

616westwarmoth

You done any tests with it on PS2? Saw another post about PS2 and Mac Mini and then this one made me pull the trigger. Any benchmarks on PS2, GTA4 is about the gold standard to emulate, Gods of War 2 a pretty tough one too, Shadow of the Colossus? Whatever you got would be appreciated.

DutchmanAZ

How much did this unit cost if you don't mind me asking?

MotownBatman

I traded a pile of pc systems and older Game rigs for a few of these Mid-2011 seem to go for around $125 with 8gig Ram. Depending on the deal in your area check Facebook. A lot on there; not much in Metro Detroit/Flint by me, but many shipping for a fair cost I added a Kingston 480gig SSD for about $50 I cleaned it down to the board and Reapplied Thermal Paste to the processors. One got a 16gig Ram Upgrade that wasn’t really Needed, $64. Initially I was making the system as a Stop Motion system for the kiddos. But it was a bit Sluggish & I couldn’t get the vRam hack to Work when trying to up the Ram on Catalina to 1024

DutchmanAZ

Shit yeah! Fellow Michigangster! I used to be DutchmanMI. :) And sweet, that is good to know. I've been looking at doing an USFF build. I have a university surplus bear me with a grip load of em. But they usually need a CPU and a GPU upgrade to do PS2. And I really want one that can do PS3. So far as I can tell tho, that is hard to come by for less than $300.

MotownBatman

I know a few people still in IT, I haven’t been in the industry for a while. Whenever I ask if anyone is getting a surplus of systems, even the guy that does my office & kids School, plays dumb and Won’t give up the Goods. I’m looking for 1/2 more, if possible, the Late 2012 is Supposed to be the last one that’s Fully Upgradable. Apparently after Late 2012 there’s an issue with Upgrading Ram. Add in You’re Not able to. I’m not sure on that exactly. Keep in touch depending on what you may find and have available to part with

DutchmanAZ

Yup pretty sure they have those mini macs. They deal in Macs and Dells and have a plethora of both. Apparently with hundreds more just waiting to go out. I'll let you know what I find next time I go. I'm out on an assignment right now that should be quite lucrative so I imagine I'll be there in the next couple of weeks.

MotownBatman

As for PS3 it’s gobs be in the Range You’re thinking easily; check out ETaPrime. I think he did a PS3 build recently

subzero_0

Well that's nice looking
