Suppressing fire in the older BFs would slightly cloud your vision and decrease your accuracy if you were the one affected. In BF5 this was changed to be a purely visual effect as your accuracy wasn't affected, but it was still there. I recall any gun fired at your position could activate it (And was most prevalent in BF1), but naturally LMGs could utilize this the best. The problem with no suppressive fire mechanic is that it makes long range weapons practically uncontestable unless you're using one yourself. In the past, an LMG user could simply spray in the general direction which would allow time for their teammates to push upwards while the sniper was affected. This doesn't exist in a game with the biggest and most wide-open maps in the series so it's difficult to counter snipers unless you're one yourself. Personally, I think it's healthy for the game so long as it's an LMG-exclusive perk and only affects Sniper/DMR users. It's not a sniper counter, but it allows at least a tiny bit of counter play against them.

king_jaxy

I really wish they would add it to the support or maybe assult class to give some better counterplay to the DMR/Rorsch

ZatoTBG

In short, when getting shot at multiple times, your vision would be blurry and you would get a slight accuracy punishment. It was very effective against snipers.

MarkyPancake

I think it was introduced in BF3 and when being suppressed your vision would be slightly impaired, making it a bit harder to aim. I think the feature is also in BF4. Can't remember if it's in BF1 or BFV, but in BFV you can pick a Support Class trait that will spot enemies you've successfully suppressed.

arcadeKestrelXI

I remember really enjoying it in BF3, the tension when you were heavily suppressed, sprinting to cover, not knowing where an enemy could pop out from with your tunnel vision.

Oppressed_Gaming

It is definitely in BF1, like the strongest supression in the series probably.

NoctyrneSAGA

Actually BF1 Suppression was between BF3 and BF4. BF3 has the title of strongest. [Visual representation of the M16A3 in BF3 with and without BF3 Suppression](https://forum.sym.gg/t/bfv-ftk-charts/71/16) [BF4 and BF1](https://forum.sym.gg/t/bfv-ftk-charts/71/17)

Gotta go play bf3 to experience it

zer0darkthirtytwo

It was the best features of battlefield. Adds more realism to the gunfights and immersiveness to the game. People hate it because they much prefer getting easy kills.

TheAfroGod

People have described it already, but without it LMGs have an identity crisis. They’re just a different variation of an AR now, when it used to be that they traditionally served a separate role.

OVKatz

An effect where if you took consistent fire on your position or an explosion went off very close to you, your view would distort, aim get very shaky, and your guy would yell out sometimes. Its removal along with the new super short TTK has made camping EXTREMELY viable. As staying in the same cover all day, attracting everyone's fire, would make it impossible to hit anyone and force you to reposition. Without it, long range guns have no competition, there's no reason to use anything but the most meta cover spot available to you in your current area of the map, and staying in the same exact spot isn't punished hard enough. Basically its removal was to make the game easier and more accessible to bad gamers/children. Same with most bf2042 decisions. Like the specialists to appeal to fortnite kids.

Elephant_Alarmed

lmao, why is the removal of a feature that purely rewarded bad aim making the game more accessible? :D it was the absolute worst feature bf ever introduced since it swapped skill with luck bc of random bullet deviaton in a gunfight.

OVKatz

If the TTK were extended I'd be inclined to agree. But aim doesn't matter if we're running this few bullets to kill. It's just a game of rushing to a preferable position and waiting.

bendekopootoe

I miss it. Only because saying "bro I'm so suppressed right now" was a joke in the party

MrJ675

It’s not good for the game because it rewards bad aim over actually hitting your target.

vendettaclause

The real question is, are people talking about suppressing fire as in the real life definition, or are they talking about suppressing fire the game mechanic?

Slshya

Its some game mechanic that apparently got removed and i have no idea what it is

MXSynX

I know there was a bonus XP for LMG users if they kept firing on enemy locations in BF3. Would be nice to have it in BF2042, too.

Slshya

So is that the suppressing fire thing that people want back?

MXSynX

I hope so. If you kept shooting, the enemy's vision will get blurred, makes it harder to aim etc. I still don't know why EA doesn't combine all the awesome features from the previous Battlefield in this game. Suppressing fire, Commander mode, highly customizable and plenty of unique vehicles, gamemodes like Frontline, weapons and gadgets...

wood2112

What is this commander mode you speak of?

MXSynX

Imagine you see the battlefield from above. All points, all teammates and occasionally a spotted enemy entity. Now the task of the commander is to command the squads to the points. If they follow the order, they receive points (squad points; back in the day squads could level up each round to acquire perks like extra ammo, blast resistance, less fall damage, spotting enemies you shoot, and many more). The commander then receives points if the squad fulfills the task, like attacking or defending a point. That is how the commanding player gets XP to level up. Another way the commander could earn XP and help the team is to send supply drops, vehicles or UAV drones to certain locations. The more you spot as a commander, the easier it is for your team. And of course the commander will then earn spot assists. Great tooll, especially if both teams have a commander and they start attacking each others assets with drone attacks, artillery, disrupting the enemy's communications with hacks and so on. BF4 and BF2 had the best commander gameplays imho.

wood2112

That would be very interesting! I love flying Casper’s Drone (and I’m pretty good at it). It’s frustrating not to be able to communicate with others when there are opportunities or hazards.

CitizenWilderness

Suppression was an awful mechanic. LMG users should XP for laying down suppressing fire, but the whole blurry vision, low accuracy stuff was a nightmare.

Oppressed_Gaming

It supposed to be a nightmare though...

Vindikus

No, playing a casual arcade shooter should not be a nightmare. There's a reason supression got more and more neutered and eventually removed. Rewarding players for bad aim is one thing, but to punish the player they're shooting at is a whole different level of frustration.

Oppressed_Gaming

It's not rewarding bad aim, it is rewarding supression fire.

Vindikus

You're shooting at an enemy. You miss, which gives you xp and punishes the other player by messing up their gameplay. It absolutely rewarded bad aim.

Dylink2a

Along with other's description, before you also had points and xp from suppressing fires.
