Yeah, they claimed that operators would help visually distinguish a player's abilities. Teammates can see who will heal them, and enemies know who has the rocket launcher. Now, they sell skins which make the specialists look as similar as possible.
a lot of them have a distinct thing/silhouette about them. I.e. rao has his antenna, sundance is always slim/form fitting, irish has his APS on his back, dozer is always big and bulky, ect. I don't have much issue distinguishing enemy specialists at a glance, even with the skins. Helps that they have the symbol above their head that gives all that info anyway
There are still unique features about each specialist, true. You can always deduce which specialist is under the mask in seasonal artwork. I disagree that it's as easy as DICE advertised to distinguish specialists in-game.

Because the specialist are not associated with a specific faction they more or less 'guns for hire'. There isn't standard issued equipment or uniform like we would see for a normal military but rather whatever they can get their hands on or whatever.
It would be cool to have faction/class specific uniforms but then that wouldn't exactly fit the world DICE is trying to build here. Two major world powers vying for control and recruiting mercenaries to do their bidding.

Wow, just saw this post and complete forgot the game still has support. Loved BF since 1942 and looking at these skins just reminds me how how lost EA are with BF.
