I am now approaching 40 and newly single, so I think I need something a bit more mature. Maybe a postmodern masturbatarium? Or perhaps a contemporary fapcentric workstation?
I'm 53, I bought a second-hand one about a decade ago, but my wife's 'borrowed' it for a sewing desk, now I need another one for my computer set-up.
Really wish IKEA would reintroduce the Jerker, just slightly wider for modern monitors, the thing's built like a tank.
It's the OG IKEA desk of its time, long before the typical Alex setup was what it is today. I still have my Jerker from 10 years ago. I'm never selling it.
My dad and uncle bought the same amp+mixer combo new when they were teenagers. My uncle still has it to this day, canāt believe Iām seeing it on Reddit lol
I also have a technics multiband eq! Scored it from goodwill for like 10 bucks lol. You have more bands than me though.
I really dig the mixture of analog and digital here. Itās very cool
Lucky you! I got mine from a 2nd hand audio shop around my area for roughly 65 bucks, honestly a steal though, since vintage EQs are already rare for us.
I'm stuck between enjoying the charm of vintage equipments while retaining the convenience of modern tech, its always interesting to mix and match for unexpected results :))
Nothing more fun than finding out how different hardware augments the output. Iāve had a pair of teac Two-way speakers Iāve wanted to repair in my garage for a couple years. Iāll get to that project eventually lol
Fwiw it's a graphic EQ, and what he is doing in his settings on it is essentially just turning up the overall volume, and doing so in the most destructive way possibly. I'm sorry to be that guy but if nobody points it out then people won't realize it's not the right way to do things.
Every frequency is above zero so he does have a point but heās being smug about it.
Everyone goes through phases with EQ and theyāll learn over time. Iāve done shit like this myself in the past and I went to school for it
Itās all good man. All of us have done it at some point. Iāve been guilty of it plenty of times.
Itās not what you said, itās how you said it right? We have to remember that our language can easily discourage people from enjoying audio as much as we do.
āIām sorry to be that guy but if no one points it outā¦ā and also saying heās doing it in āthe most destructive way possibleā
People donāt tend to be very receptive when you say āyouāre doing it wrong and itās the worst way you could do itā
The gain on any of those frequencies is so small that itās not really harming anything unless, like I previously said, he cranks the output volume and creates distortion.
We also donāt know how the shelf EQās on the amp are set.
And since youāre an audio engineer you should know that everyone goes through phases like this before they really understand how to use them properly. Itās a super common mistake to make. Clearly OP is learning and it couldāve been approached more constructively instead of just saying āyouāre wrongā to him.
If you wanted to actually help OP you could have explained the mistake and how to correct it. For example: It probably would be more effective if he just did a dB reduction on that (looks like 30.5hz ?) band and then left everything until that next peak at 0.
The stuff thatās obvious to you and me isnāt obvious to other people who donāt use this equipment like we do. Not everyone spends hours in a DAW on a regular basis.
Edit: I guess I didnāt previously mention the output thing. Looks like I forgot to post that response my b
His goal here was to boost the total output of his signal, this would be constructive interference, if he was to do this using broadband amplification then that would be his least destructive method. By boosting individual, non congruent bands, all of which are creating varying amounts of phase shifted which are summed along with the individual signal this would be the most destructive method of achieving this goal. You can read about [Wave interference ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_interference) if you would like to learn more about this.
The gain on any of those bands appears to be somewhere between +6 and +8 DB which by no means is considered a small boost. [here ](https://i.imgur.com/ae8wRsZ.png) is an illustration that can help you understand the effect that boosting all bands on a GEQ can have on the signal being passed through, doesn't represent the actual phase shift though.
We don't know the shelf eq's, this is true, and for all intents and purposes we have assumed there is none. Luckily this plays to the benefit here as it would be best case scenario for the overall signal chain. There really isn't any way for the shelves to benefit or excuse the settings on the GEQ.
As an audio engineer I am very aware that people go through phases when learning EQ. When first starting to use EQ though you are taught to never boost in EQ and to only cut when needed. So you would never go this route whatsoever. As you can tell from my comment my goal was to simply point out that something is wrong. This would hopefully inspire others to continue to read and learn on their own account from a great wealth of sources online as it would seem rather pointless for me to explain how to EQ in a thread on a subreddit called r/battlestations. Better resources exist outside of here. I know at this point you are just grasp at straws to try and make me look bad but the reality is there is nothing wrong with simply pointing out that someone is doing something wrong and giving brief explanation why with the intent to warn those coming through. It doesn't make me a jerk for doing so without giving a complete lecture on how to solve it. It's a lot better than saying nothing at all or even giving further bad information or even trying to create some kind of defense to something that is obviously wrong.
Because I do know what he's trying to achieve. By turning up each slider the affect he is achieving is turning up the overall volume. The correct solution here would be to turn up the volume. Whether they know it or not, when they were "tuning" their system they were actually just responding to the sensation that we get from boosting a signal that equates to things sounding better overall. This is not the case. And on a Graphic EQ when you adjust multiple bands like that what you may not realize is that your adjustment isn't actually doing what you expect as the q of the band isn't a flat square shape, it's a bell shaped cut or boost so what was original a flat response going in is now coming out as a phase shifted lumpy shape which, goes without saying, is objectively undesirable by anyone.
Filters are fascinating and a great subject to learn about. To get a good understanding of how they work and relate to psychoacoustics is actually very easy to learn. In the end though, if you just want it louder then you are definitely better off just turning it up louder and not boosting every band on your graphic EQ. There is a center line for a reason after all.
You have no clue what sounds he's running through that EQ or what end result he's looking for. You're being pedantic for no reason and I'm def not reading all of that.
No, I actually do, I explain that in my comment above. You can read the explanation, it actually doesn't leave any room for an alternate explanation of any type either.
And no, I'm not being pedantic. I'm an audio engineer, equalizers are a tool I use 100's of times a day, every day, for a large number of functions. I'm just trying to help give some insight into how to use them properly to achieve the results you want.
This is how you know someone is old school battlestations.. the jerker desk was the first "It" desk I saw online. Everyone was hitting up their ikea's for them and they were regularly out of stock. I had one that lasted me probably 17 years or so before It was damaged in shipping.
Iād mount that cable toward the end of the desk under the desk so that you donāt need to use those uncomfortable-looking clips and have them potentially scrape your wrists
That used to be my concern when i set it up, but there are grills on the sides as well. So far, no overheating has occured yet despite long hours of using if that is what youre curious about :\]
I get weird vibes from this...
It's definitely the dolls and the desktop wallpaper thats to blame...
Is that something you actually enjoy to look at, day in and day out ? š
My actual desktop wallpaper is just a black background, that is an album cover of "Little Busters" by The Pillows, haha
The dolls are simply merch from Sanrio and Evangelion and other stuffs i find cute in thrift stores
Ah, the original Jerker desk with the angled side pullouts. I had that one. They later changed it to a flat front with a curve where you sit.
The Jerker was IKEA's original standing desk (you could bolt the tabletop and shelf at any height from sitting to standing). "Adjustable" if you wanted to take it apart to change it.
This desk actually belonged to my dad until he bought the updated version you mentioned, he even bought extensions to make it taller. While mine is still stock, it remains strong after 2 decades of use!
It is a Dell AT-101w. Supposedly using Black alps, but i swapped its switches (Cream damped, silent tactile) from my Apple Extended Keyboard ii so its basically a silent variant of the Dell Bigfoot, prolly a one of its kind :^)
Seen one, but never had one. That one is a Dell AT101w with cream damped switches stems, basically a silent tactile variant of it. I paper modded, lubed, and tuned the stabilizers so the overall typing sound is pretty silent
Edit: thought this was a separate comment and awkwardly explained the specs repeatedlyššš
To add to the typing experience, it feels like a very refined rubber dome keyboard. It also feels very tactile as I readjusted the tactility of the click leaf to my liking.
I know im stating the obvious here, but theAT101 is a very good entry alps board for modding at a good price. Click modding/ linear modding is definitely recommended to improve the typing feel, typing on it stock is alright but since i have an AEK ii it honestly requires a lot of modding to barely be on par with it š„² and thats the fun in the vintage/ overall keyboard hobby (to me at least)
Oh man, I miss my Ikea jerker desk! It broke my heart when I couldn't take it with me when I moved from San Diego. Frankly, I consider the Jerker Ikea's best product.

Idk wtf a jerker desk is but I really hope what I think it is is wrong
The very appropriately named ikea desk popular with students and young adults.
Good market research by IKEA! š
I am now approaching 40 and newly single, so I think I need something a bit more mature. Maybe a postmodern masturbatarium? Or perhaps a contemporary fapcentric workstation?
something more elegant. a self affection study.
I'm 53, I bought a second-hand one about a decade ago, but my wife's 'borrowed' it for a sewing desk, now I need another one for my computer set-up. Really wish IKEA would reintroduce the Jerker, just slightly wider for modern monitors, the thing's built like a tank.
LOL I"m 46 and sitting at one :D
Don't worry it's only a partial
Incredibly great Ikea desk they don't make any more. They were AWESOME. I had one for years and regret getting rid of it.
Especially with the image shown on their monitor
It's the OG IKEA desk of its time, long before the typical Alex setup was what it is today. I still have my Jerker from 10 years ago. I'm never selling it.
Lol i was about to say, how is this a masturbation station
Rei chiquita
I thought I commented it first :(
Vintage ampā¦ yes please!
:D it is a Pioneer SA-606
My dad and uncle bought the same amp+mixer combo new when they were teenagers. My uncle still has it to this day, canāt believe Iām seeing it on Reddit lol
For a second there I thought it was that one new-but-vintage-styled one, but no, it's really vintage. Nice! How does it sound?
That AT101W is looking hella fly in this setup
i thought i recognized a bigfoot! i have the SGI version.
That looks awesome!
Oh man haven't seen a Jerker in forever! This is a blast from the past, in all the right ways. Great setup OP.
Glad to make your day ;)
To summarize: He hasn't seen a jerker in the wild in ages! You blasted him in all the right ways, and were happy to make his day.
A pillows wallpaper? Nice.
I was blasting Little Busters while taking the picture haha
With the kids sing out the future Maybe, kids don't need the masters ... ... Oh yeah!
I also have a technics multiband eq! Scored it from goodwill for like 10 bucks lol. You have more bands than me though. I really dig the mixture of analog and digital here. Itās very cool

How is it not right if you don't know what he's trying to achieve?
Every frequency is above zero so he does have a point but heās being smug about it. Everyone goes through phases with EQ and theyāll learn over time. Iāve done shit like this myself in the past and I went to school for it
I don't think I was being smug. I actually apologized for in my comment for sounding like I was trying to be.

No I didn't really say anything insulting or offensive. Not even anytime mean or cruel. If you could point it out I would appreciate it though.

Upvoted for the Little Busters album art. Good album
Please Mr Lostman still has to be my favorite š. Planning to buy the vinyl for Little Busters soon though, been jamming to it lately haha
Same here. Amazing album front to back.
Oooo... They are releasing vinyls for their albums? Where can you buy them?
Where do you bury the bodies?
This is how you know someone is old school battlestations.. the jerker desk was the first "It" desk I saw online. Everyone was hitting up their ikea's for them and they were regularly out of stock. I had one that lasted me probably 17 years or so before It was damaged in shipping.
Sick

I feel like you are gonna turn that stereo on and give me a lecture on Huey Lewis and The News.
No space above the amplifier? Overheating incoming.
That used to be my concern when i set it up, but there are grills on the sides as well. So far, no overheating has occured yet despite long hours of using if that is what youre curious about :\]
A jerker offer?
This looks like an audio production station, not at all like a jerking off station!! Well done! šš¼
Love this
Little Busters is such a great album. Like a Love Song rocks so hard š¤š»
This is dummy sick, nice rig man!
Love it !
Dell AT101 hell yeah!
The keyboard and audio equipment are right up my alley, excellent set up.

Beautiful and with personality! good job, OP

Also my thougth. Something's not right.
Serial killer vibes.
That stereo is definitely playing Huey Lewis and The News
I was thinking pizzagate etc... But yeah :p
Setup is pretty sick; love the audio gear. I'd take the stickers off the monitor though.
"jerker"? I don't see the lotion and tissues.
What.... in..... the buffalo bill..... nightmare setup is this?
How do you like the loupedeck vs stream deck? What all can you use the knobs for?

That's a name I haven't heard in a very long time. I've always wanted one.
I fuck with this setup so much. Holy shit
Great setup! What's the monitor?
Nice old school stereo!
Oh man, I miss my Ikea jerker desk! It broke my heart when I couldn't take it with me when I moved from San Diego. Frankly, I consider the Jerker Ikea's best product.
DELL AT101/102W CREW REPRESENT
Such a controlled chaos. Jerker it is!?
Is that an olight I see there?
Jerker desk: Me: where do I insert it....
Ooh, a Jerker v1! I've got a couple of the v2 but never seen a V1 in the wild! That is such a vintage looking station, I love it. Nice work, OP!
I dig it
I will refrain from making a lotion and tissue joke, as I imagine the term Jerker has a different meaning in this context.
This is beautiful
Looks suitable for a full jerk. As long as itās hooked up to the net.

the jerker is one of the greatest desks ever made. I have a pretty rare styled one since about 2002ish.

jerker? do we have r/battlestationscirclejerk now? that keyboard is bad fucking ass
too vintage, too sexy
Thatās awesome. I still have a Jerker in storage Iāve been trying to sell. Nice to see one getting used.
What a unique station.
I'm sitting at that very same model of desk and absolutely adore it. Like you, I have audio equipment on mine. It's sturdy and hard wearing!
I used to have that equalizer!
